  • The Orchestra Now Presents Two Manhattan Shows as Part of “Sight and Sound” Series Dec 8 and 15

    NYC-based ‘The Orchestra Now’ has announced Manhattan performances of ‘Siena, Wagner & Parsifal’ and ‘The Nutcracker & The Planets’ as part of their Sight and Sound series starting Dec 8.

    On Sunday, December 8, the iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) hosts The Orchestra Now’s performances of ‘Siena, Wagner & Parsifal’ which kicks off the organization’s Sight and Sound concert series. The program will examine Wagner’s remarkable innovations in opera via selections from his work Parsifal, set against the background of notable painterly invention during the Italian Renaissance in Siena.

    The Orchestra Now (TON) Sight & Sound series at the Met explores the parallels between orchestral music and the visual arts. Each performance includes an introduction by a Met curator, a discussion with conductor and music historian Leon Botstein accompanied by on-screen exhibition images and live musical excerpts, followed by a full performance of the works and an audience Q&A. Tickets include same-day museum admission.

    At the dawn of the Italian Renaissance, Siena was the site of remarkable artistic innovation. Sienese artists—including Duccio, Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti, and Simone Martini—played a pivotal role in defining Western painting. Over 500 years later, Richard Wagner revolutionized opera composition in much the same way. Twelve years after he read Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Parzival, a poem from the Renaissance era, he began working on a libretto inspired by this tale of the quest for the Holy Grail. This eventually became his final composition, the opera Parsifal.

    The Orchestra’s second December performance will offer a FREE holiday concert of audience favorites by Johann Strauss II, Tchaikovsky, Borodin, and Holst, led by Leonardo Pineda and joined for some of the pieces by the All-City High School Orchestra at New York City’s Talent Unlimited High School on December 15.

    The Orchestra Now and Interim Assistant Conductor Leonardo Pineda present a free holiday season concert at the Talent Unlimited High School for the performing arts on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The program of high-spirited popular works includes Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite and Johann Strauss II’s Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka. TŌN is joined by NYC’s All-City High School Orchestra for Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances and two movements from Holst’s The Planets.

  • The Met Brings Opera To The Parks For its 14th Summer Recital Series

    The Metropolitan Opera has announced its 2024 Summer Recital Series lineup in collaboration with Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage.

    The recital series will feature performances in all five boroughs. The first recital on June 18 will be in the heart of Manhattan at SummerStage in Central Park. Soprano, Leah Hawkins, tenor, Mario Chang and bass-baritone, Michael Sumuel will take to the stage to kick off the recitals. Opera fans can bring chairs and blankets to enjoy the free concerts.  

    The first Met opera house opened in 1883 by a group of wealthy businessmen. It wasn’t until 1966, when the Met joined the other New York arts institutions, that the opera house in Lincoln Center opened. This theater was better equipped with the technology needed for a metropolitan experience. In order to expand its audience, the opera house introduced its The Met: Live in HD in 2006, bringing the opera experience to cinemas across the country. In another effort to expand its audience, the Met brought its work to parks around NYC.

    The first Summer Recital Series happened in 2009. The idea was to bring music to people who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to experience an Opera. Since 2009, the Met singers have performed nearly every year with a break in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid.

  • Brittany Howard and Michael Kiwanuka Announce Co-Headlining Tour this Fall

    Music icons Brittany Howard and Michael Kiwanuka have announced their co-headlining tour which arrives in Philadelphia on September 29. The tour sees two dates in New York – The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester and Summerstage in NYC.

    The tour kicks off September 29 in Philadelphia for a run of 14 shows across the US, wrapping in Paso Robles, CA, on October 19. Brittany Howard and Michael Kiwanuka have partnered with The Ally Coalition. The partnership donates $1 per ticket to support housing for mental health resources for people of color, single mothers, and unhoused LGBTQ Youth. The tour sees support from artist Yasmin Williams.

    Brittany Howard is a multi-instrumentalist and vocal powerhouse who specializes in soul, funk, and rock. She plans to play music from her sophomore album What Now along with older hits from her discography. Michael Kiwanuka introduced himself and his art with the acclaimed debut album, Home Again, followed by his decidedly left turn LP, Love & Hate. He has won a Mercury Prize and BRIT Award. Together, the two icons plan to bring their musical gifts to the forefront of several cities across the US.
