  • Math Rock Trio Peaer Return After Five Years with Single “Just Because”

Math-rock trio Peaer has announced their return to music after five years with the release of single “Just Because.”

NYC-based math rock trio Peaer return with their new single, “Just Because.” It’s their first new offering since 2019’s A Healthy Earth, which earned raves from fans and media alike. A drop-tuned, four-on-the-floor thumper that crescendos with a moment of headbanging catharsis, the track is a perfect blend of Wish-era The Cure’s glittery rhythms and the melancholic post-rock emo of American Football.

The band will also be making its live return with their first show in nearly a year this Saturday, November 16, in Brooklyn at Baby’s All Right alongside Pet Fox. “Just Because” is the fruit of their focus — a soaring introduction to Peaer’s new era and a tantalizing promise of what else lies ahead.

Peaer began in earnest in 2014, when Katz sought to blend his love of windy math rock with contemplative slowcore. From this sprang 2014’s lo-fi, home-recorded album the eyes sink into the skull, released digitally via Bandcamp with Katz taking on all of the instrumentation himself. From there the idea of Peaer evolved, and while touring on 2016’s self-titled LP (Peaer), Katz joined forces with now long-term close-collaborators Jeremy Kinney (drums, engineering) and Thom Lombardi (bass, vocals).

The trio came together to write and produce 2019’s aforementioned, critically acclaimed A Healthy Earth, which they quickly followed up with The Hands and Feet Turn Blue (2019) — an Eyes companion album featuring reworked songs, demos, and remixes.

  • Mihali Releases Introspective Single “Circus Life” Feat. Andy Frasco

Returning for his third single of the year, singer-songwriter Mihali has partnered up with fellow musician Andy Frasco and producer Spencer Thomson to offer listeners a peek into the traveling musician’s “Circus Life” in the midst of their respective tours.

    Mihali

Former frontman of rock band Twiddle and a rising reggae star in his own right, Mihali Savoulidis is no new face to the music industry. His solo career formally began in 2020 with the release of “Breathe and Let Go”, with several singles following throughout during the Covid-19 pandemic. This year marks an exciting series of singles following the 2022 release of his last album, Effection, the most recent being his collaboration with fellow musician and songwriter Andy Frasco, “Circus Life”.

Both seasoned in the touring artist lifestyle and currently on the road for their respective acts,  “Circus Life” is the product of Mihali and Frasco’s reflections upon the ups and downs of life, specifically as it pertains to musicians whose day to day lives become a cycle of performance and travel- possibly for months at a time.

With a slightly more acoustic americana sound than some of Mihali’s recent works, “Circus Life” meshes a rolling beat with calming piano chords and lyrics that come from the heart to express both the unspoken struggles of touring life and the beauty of it- the sacrifice that must be made to bring love to the fans, the friends, and the family he holds dear.

“Mihali and I were talking about living on the road one day after a gig, depleted but happy, and he said “Yeah, it’s like we’re in the circus.” We both looked at each other and didn’t say a word, but knew that exact feeling. Two months later, he sent me a demo called “Circus Life,”and I asked if I could add a bridge…I love when songs come out like that.”

    – Andy Frasco

Both Mihali and Frasco are currently touring with a handful of dates in New York between the two acts.

Mihali will be at Wonderland Forest in Lafayette on September 21 and The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester on October 25- tickets are available here.

Frasco and the rest of his band, Andy Frasco & The U.N., will be performing at this year’s River Jam in Buffalo on October 13. Tickets are available here.

  • NYC Singer Leo Sawikin Releases Single “What Is The Answer”

Singer-songwriter Leo Sawikin from New York City put out his latest single “What Is The Answer” on July 10.

Sawikin is coming off of the success of his last single, “Till You’re Somebody Else,” which charted #1 on the Mediabase A/C Independent Artists Chart.

    "What Is The Answer"

Leo Sawikin is the former frontman of the NYC indie-folk band The Chordaes and has continued to make solo music of the same caliber, as exemplified by “What Is The Answer”. Over the past few years, he’s been busy releasing singles, including “Hold On”,  “The Same Mistakes”, “Don’t Pass It By”, “New York I’m Coming Home”, and  “This River.” Sawikin’s songwriting and musicianship have earned him rave reviews from a slew of music critics.

    Leo Sawikin

“What Is The Answer” enters the existential realm, asking important questions about “what consciousness is and questions whether it’s something that transcends our physical lives or ends when we pass,” as Sawikin explains. The instrumentation and harmonies project that constant wondering about life, the unknown, and stronger forces.

…a profound message wrapped in indie-folk with dreamy shimmer pop sensibilities reminiscent of a gentle breeze on a warm summer night. Leo’s vocal performance is consistently captivating, evoking a sense of raw sincerity and emotional depth that resonates with listeners.

    Honk Magazine

Fans of Sawikin’s music can also look forward to his sophomore solo album, which will drop sometime in 2024, produced by Phil Ek (Grouplove, Fleet Foxes, Modest Mouse) and mastered by Greg Calbi (The Smile, Bob Dylan, Bon Iver). More information to be released in the near future. For now, however, his 2021 album Row Me Away is available to listen to on all streaming platforms.

In the midst of “What Is The Answer’s” release, Sawikin has been on a national tour opening for Jon McLaughlin in May and June. Additionally, he has big things in store for Fall 2024 with a handful of more dates. He’ll be hitting the road again starting Sep. 17, traveling the East Coast until late November.

‘What Is The Answer’ is a song that asks what consciousness is and questions whether it’s something that transcends our physical lives or ends when we pass. Will there be pain, or will it be peaceful? It also ties into the theme of ‘Till You’re Somebody Else,’ in that it sees our current lives as just a moment in our existence.

  • Brooklyn Trio Gooseberry Releases Single “Dying To Meet You”

Brooklyn-based alt-rock band, Gooseberry, released their brand new song “Dying To Meet You” on Friday, June 14. This release is the second single off their forthcoming debut album All My Friends Are Cattle coming out Sept. 6.

"Dying To Meet You" by Gooseberry

The musical team of singer and guitarist, Asa Daniels, drummer Evin Rossington, and bassist Will Hammond return to releasing music with two EPs and a multitude of singles under their belt. Since entering the scene in 2019, the band continues to focus on writing new music and playing shows. Constantly expanding their audience in venues like Baby’s All Right and Knitting Factory, Gooseberry undoubtedly stays true to themselves and their music reflects that.

Their new song, “Dying To Meet You,” carries that ethos wholeheartedly. As Daniels put it, “Ultimately, none of us knows much about either, and so if anything, this song is about sneering at those who think they’ve got it figured out.” The song begins slowly until it escalates into the classic bold Gooseberry sound. The accompanying music video tells the story and mirrors the music’s transition through its visuals.

The song, along with their previous single “Kikiyon,” gives fans a preview of their upcoming album All My Friends Are Cattle. Tracked over three months, the band had the help of Grammy-winning engineers Colin Bryson, Phil Joly, and Jennica Best who have worked with the likes of Zach Bryan, Lana Del Rey, and Colatura respectively.

There’s something about this tune that is eerie, like something beyond explanation is peering over your shoulder waiting for you to turn your head around. For the breakdowns in this song, our producer (Colin Bryson) brought a tiny handheld distortion mic into the studio for me to scream into. And I screamed my head off. That was cathartic. Hopefully this song brings our fans catharsis. Or a sore throat.

  • Jake Trevor Releases Powerful New Single “Should I”

NYC Singer-songwriter Jake Trevor has released a new powerful single “Should I” ahead of his new self-titled album Jake Trevor – set to release on May 24.

    Jake Trevor

Jake Trevor started his career performing in the subway system, with his original music that included soul, pop, folk, and alt-rock, and songs inspired by other artists such as Coldplay, Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, and Rihanna. His songs explore self-discovery, doubt, sexuality, confidence, and achieving one’s dreams.

Trevor is an artist who resists categorization, with a sound that is dark and upbeat. “I believe anything is possible”, Trevor says. Having had a turbulent childhood, growing up in a hostile and homophobic family and finding refuge in creativity from an early age, he credits music for saving his life, making him resilient and giving him purpose.

In his newly released single “Should I”, Trevor sings about being overwhelmed and wondering what to do next. His heartfelt lyrics and deeply moving voice are like a boat dancing on the piano’s ocean waves, especially when he hits the high notes singing, “What would you do if you had one day left to live / Who would you love if your heart had one last chance?”

With the release of a new single, Trevor also shared that he will release his debut self-titled album Jake Trevor on May 24, taking his fans on a journey from piano balladry and electropop club bangers, to coffeehouse folk and soulful indie-pop. “This album has a throughline of rebellion and empowerment. It spans from deeply sad or romantic ballads to the utter jubilant glee of my heart-pounding dance anthems,” he said. The self-titled album takes on topics of family, homophobia, religion, love and sex – all through a lens of passion and hope.

Fans can stream “Should I” on all streaming platforms, and to learn more about Jake Trevor, visit here.

Dmitry Wild’s track “Rock-n-Roll is My Business” is the subject of the music video at hand. The tune is a groovy mix of blues, garage, and psychedelic rock. The video has an overarching theme of devilishness, mischief, and naughtiness.

The video was filmed at the awe-inspiring Amsterdam Castle, which adds an extra layer of intrigue to the videography. Wild is a NYC native, and his grandiose style certainly reflects where he’s from. The video is also quite grand, as it depicts the nature both literally and satirically of the rock-n-roll business.

Leach of Killswitch Engage and The Father is played by Byron Frayne, who also recorded the B-side “Son of a Gun.” The video also features burlesque dancer and upcoming singer Tryst La Noir and Purple Goddess – the top pole dancer appearing on tour with Snoop Dog.

  • Gangstagrass Release Music Video for Latest Single, “The Only Way Out Is Through”

Bluegrass Hip-Hop group Gangstagrass has released a music video for their latest single, “The Only Way Is Through.” The release of the new video featuring musical icon Jerry Douglas, as well as their recently dropped single is propelling the group forward and further narrowing the gap between bluegrass and hip-hop.

The composition showcases the meshing of expert banjo artistry, dynamic production, and the unique facets of Gangstagrass music. The vocals are whisked through an inspiring chorus, complete with the Lowdown Brass Band on horns.

Gangstagrass was birthed as a studio experiment in 2006 by Brooklyn-based producer Rench. The combination of country/bluegrass vocals, guitar, and hip-hop beats allowed for Gangstagrass to evolve. The group grew into a vibrant and improvisational band, forging unity and creative diversity from the most unexpected of origins.

The group harmonizes an array of talents from Rench, R-SON the Voice of Reason (MC), and Dolio the Sleuth (MC, Vocals), in addition to featuring Dan “Danjo” Whitener (Banjo, Vocals), and B.E. Farrow (Fiddle, Vocals), among other brilliant instrumentalists.

Gangstagrass has culminated various sounds from across the country. The ensemble has skillfully blended the traditional sounds of fiddles and banjos with contemporary hip-hop beats. This unseen blend and innovation have propelled the band to worldwide success.

The music video for the recently released single, “The Only Way Out Is Through” shows the members of the group performing the song whilst facing the camera. Throughout the video, random objects like silly string, paper balls, cardboard, foodstuffs, etc. are being hurled at each person in the spotlight.

The music video is meant to be humorous, wacky, and borderline absurd. The directors of the video, Tough Dumplin and MZ.ICAR did an excellent job at conveying the groups fun spirit and goofy nature, while also showcasing the grand musicianship with the single played throughout.

  • Hearing Aide: Gregory McLoughlin, “Hemispheres”

Prolific bassist and songwriter Gregory McLoughlin has released his latest single, “Hemispheres” on January 15. Gregory McLoughlin, hailing from Jersey City, NJ, creates bass-forward, and acoustic tracks that can best fit into the category of folk or soft rock.

    Gregory McLoughlin Hemispheres

A first thought on Gregory’s single, “Hemispheres,” is the opening sounds quite reminiscent of Bob Seger’s “Against the Wind.” It begins with a subtle bassline, melodic piano, and a recognizable acoustic riff. You can also hear accordion kick in as the vocals do. Backing vocal harmonies on this track are quite smooth and relaxing.

The song tells a tale about a sort-of yearning for summer adventure with loved one. Certainly, a vibe any Northeasterner in the winter can get behind. The song has a mix of a tropical, Margaritaville sound, and American Folk. There is a smooth, guitar solo between verses and the chorus, which remains in the background for the remainder of the tune.

The single has the same melody throughout, with little to no diversion in neither vocals nor instrumentation. That said, the song is sweet-sounding, and one where emotion and hope are the defining narratives.

This is a song about summertime, but specifically inspired by the beautiful landscape of
New England’s Cape Cod National Seashore. I am releasing it in the dead of Winter to
remind us of warm summer memories and help push us through the cold months.
