  • Wallows Bring “Model” to Philly

    Wallows, the Los Angeles-based indie rock trio, has been captivating audiences since their formation in 2017. Made of Braeden Lemasters, Dylan Minnette, and Cole Preston, Wallows boasts a signature blend of nostalgic 90s alt-rock and modern indie-pop. Over time, they’ve consistently delivered infectious hits that have earned them both critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase.

    Their live performances are where Wallows truly shine. Known for their electric energy and dynamic stage presence, each member of the band brings something unique to the table. Their individual contributions combine to create a show that is both sonically and visually captivating. Their shows are more than just concerts—they are experiences that leave fans with lasting memories.

    The Show

    Wallows’ show at The Mann in Philadelphia was spectacular, showcasing the band’s growth and their connection with their audience. They created memorable moments throughout the evening, making it a night that Philly fans won’t forget.

    As the show kicked off, Wallows took to the main stage with “Do Not Wait,” immediately drawing the crowd in. Braeden kept the crowd engaged throughout the night, seamlessly transitioning from talking about Philly’s national treasures to introducing “Quarterback” by joking, “If Benjamin Franklin was alive right now, I think he’d be into football. Speaking of football…” Cole then took over on vocals, and the crowd was loving every minute.

    The Mann, with its expansive and almost boat-like feel (as noted by Cole), provided the perfect backdrop for Wallows’ dynamic setlist. From fan favorites like “Scrawny” and “These Days” to deeper cuts like “Drunk on Halloween,” the band delivered a performance that had the audience singing along and dancing throughout the night. One of the standout moments of the night was when Dylan made his way through the crowd during “She’s an Actress,” holding hands with fans and bringing an extra layer of intimacy to the show.

    The guys surprised the crowd on the B-Stage by performing “Ground,” a song they hadn’t played on the Model Tour until now. They followed this with a haunting rendition of “Drunk on Halloween,” which further cemented the band’s ability to captivate their audience with both their sound and their presence.

    As the band transitioned back to the main stage, they brought the night to a close with a powerful sequence of songs, including “Worlds Apart,” during which Braeden made his way back through the crowd, and the crowd-favorite “Are You Bored Yet?” The energy in the venue was palpable, with fans singing every word and savoring every moment.

  • King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Play 3 Hour Marathon Show at Forest Hills Stadium

    Australian band King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard formed in 2010, mashing up a combination of prospective band names into their now iconic name. The name tells you almost everything you need to know about this band of Australian goofs and their ability to turn any concept and sound into a piece of complex and intriguing art. In the past 14 years, they have released 26 studio albums covering many genres, from psychedelic rock to metal to indie and everything in-between. That’s almost one full album every six months for over a decade. King Gizzard gave us a taste of all of it Friday, August 16th at Forest Hills Stadium.

    Opening for King Gizzard was Geese, coming off of their well-received second studio album, 3D Country and 4D Country EP. Geese’s sound fits well within Gizzard’s world, with more of an american blues lean meets Pearl Jam feeling to their sound. With these shows, Gizzard took a page out of the Grateful Dead’s book, playing three-hour sets with a changing setlist. Comparing the setlists from their Friday and Saturday shows at Forest Hills Stadium, they didn’t repeat a single song across the two shows. Their discography is so deep that they could repeat that feat across almost a dozen of these three-hour marathon sets without ever repeating a song.

    If you are a fan of a more niche Gizzard song, now may be your opportunity to see it live as they trawl through their discography over the coming months. The setlist for this first Forest Hills show was a perfect welcome to fans who may not have had a chance to see the band before. The band played a majority of their most popular tracks, with an overall metal lean and a healthy serving of Gizzard’s home base psychadelic funk/rock to round out the 25 song setlist.

    With the lack of breaks and varied repertoire, Gizzard amazingly suffered very few hiccups during their set, playing an almost seamless blend of tracks with some especially unique transitions between songs that made the audience’s ears perk up. All of the band’s members are multi-instrumentalists, adding to the complexity and giving King Gizzard their unique layered sound. They invited a fan named Gabby who was holding a sign in the audience on stage to sing the intro to “Nuclear Fusion.” The intro is probably best described as throat singing with some heavy effects layered ontop and Gabby killed it.

    Another notable aspect of King Gizzard’s live performances is the audience, a unique combination of deadheads, metal heads, and monster heads, people dressed in a smattering of medieval clothing and monster costumes harkening to King Gizzard’s ever growing lore. Many of these costumes touch on themes inherent to Gizzard’s visual media and lyricism such as the eponymous awareness around the earths climate and the eponymous King Gizzard and Lizard Wizard. King Gizzard’s media presence is heavily based in fantasy and sci fi and has given way to fans concocting a unique world out of an amalgamation of lyrics and imagery. The looseness of this world is what makes their crowds so unique, as fans craft outfits that fit into a world created of their own creation, serving as a true reflection of the wearer in a way that typical fan regalia can’t.

    The show stopped exactly at 10pm due to a hard curfew implemented by Forest Hills Stadium last year in an effort to cut down on noise complaints. Following their shows in Queens, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard continue on with their North America tour, which is a marathon itself, with 36 more shows through November of this year. Then in May of 2025 they make their way to Lisbon, Portugal for the European leg, which extends through June.

  • Lunar Vacation Brings Their Spacey Sound to Brooklyn Steel

    The Band

    Lunar Vacation is the musical embodiment of a summer daydream. Hailing from Georgia, this indie rock quintet is made up of five lifelong friends. Their debut album, Inside Every Fig Is a Dead Wasp, was a gentle introduction to their hazy, feel-good vibe. But now, with their upcoming sophomore album Everything Matters, Everything’s Fire, they’re ready to turn up the volume and the feels.

    The Show

    When Lunar Vacation hit the stage at Brooklyn Steel on August 1, they weren’t just there to warm up the crowd—they were there to make sure everyone was floating on cloud nine before Vacations started their set. Starting with “Set the Stage,” they did just that. The track was like the musical equivalent of opening a window on a perfect summer day, inviting everyone to lean in and soak up the goodness.

    As they transitioned into “Cutting Corners,” you could feel the energy in the room amp up. The sharp guitar riffs sliced through the Brooklyn air, locking the band into a groove that had the crowd swaying and grinning. “Unlucky” blended sadness and hope, captivating the audience with its lyrical contrast.

    By the time they hit the final notes of “Tom,” the crowd was fully under their spell. The song ended the set with a burst of energy, leaving everyone feeling like they’d shared something truly special.

    Lunar Vacation, with sunny tunes and deep lyrics, navigated the stage with confidence. And with Everything Matters, Everything’s Fire on the horizon, it’s clear this band is only just beginning to light up the indie music scene.

  • Billie Marten Announces New Album at Surprise Show

    Billie Marten played a surprise show at Union Pool on Wednesday, July 24. The British indie/folk singer-songwriter announced the show in a handwritten note on Instagram teasing “mostly new stuff” to be played. Marten began her set with an announcement of a new record that she had just spent ten days recording down the street from Union Pool. She didn’t give a solid idea of when this new album might be coming out, but Marten’s last album, Drop Cherries, released just over a year ago on April 7, 2023.

    Opening for Billie Marten was writer and musician Jana Horn. If you like Big Thief and Adrianne Lenker, you might also enjoy Jana Horn’s work. Intimate, interpersonal talk singing poetry over folksy drums and unique bass lines. She rode the line between banter and awkwardness perfectly, and the crowd had a great time. Marten then came out quietly onto the stage in Union Pool’s back room, which has the vibe of a Christmassy saloon. One pink light drenched Marten onstage with her acoustic guitar in her spaghetti strap top, light wash jeans, and red converse.

    The show was very low-key. Marten’s pickup came loose and the sound engineer scrambled down from his spot up on the balcony as the crowd parted around him. Billie Marten told the audience to talk amongst themselves, and the room filled with a buzz until she was ready to play again. There was plenty of audience banter as Marten changed tunings between each song. We only got to hear four or five new songs, so there is definitely more to come down the road. Hopefully, Billie Marten will be able to put the finishing touches on her album soon, as we are all eagerly awaiting her next show in NY.

  • Dromedary Records Return to Catskill for Second Annual DromFest

    After an incredibly successful debut, making their way back to the Avalon Lounge in Catskill, NY, is the highly anticipated DromFest.

    Hosted by Kingston-based micro-indie record label Dromedary Records, DromFest celebrates Dromedary artists, DJs, and some of indie rock’s biggest names, including The Figgs, King Missle, and Aeon Station. From August 30 to September 1, join Dromedary Records in Catskill for this year’s rendition of DromFest.

    Initially conceived in 2023 as a party to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Dromedary Records, DromFest reached smashing success that inspired the label to make it an annual event. “The weekend was so much fun for the bands and attendees alike, that there was demand to do another,” explained Dromedary founder Al Crisafulli. “So  we’re all going to get together in the Catskills and have a big, weekend-long  party, hopefully feel like kids again, and celebrate this amazing community of  artists we’re so proud to be a part of.”  

    However, this year, DromFest plans on making history. This festival sees the return of Cell, a New York-based indie rock band that played a major role in the emergence of alternative and indie rock onto the music scene of 1990. The band unfortunately disbanded in 1995 and has not played a show since, until now, that is. For the first time in almost three decades, Cell will not only be performing, but co-headlining the closing show with Aeon Station on Sunday, September 1.

    Performing alongside Cell are several Dromedary artists, including Cathedral Ceilings, Karyn Kuhl, Dew Claw, Overheard,  Sleepyhead, and Matt Hunter & the Dusty Fates. The entire festival will be emceed by comedian and musician Doug Stoley, known for his work on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in Manhattan. “It’s a great lineup,” says Crisafulli, “an excellent blend  of indie rock royalty, great bands that haven’t played together in years,  and newer bands that wear their 90s indie rock influences on their sleeve.” 

    Admission for Friday night’s events will be $25, and Saturday/Sunday passes will be $80, with VIP passes that include a new Sleepyhead 7″, bonus sampler CD, and a donation to a local food bank priced at $100. Passes go on sale at 12 pm Friday, June 14 at noon and are available HERE

  • MacInizby Enters NYC’s Indie-Rock Scene

    Up-and-coming artist MacInizby made her debut on May 24 with the release of her new single “Closet.” The song chronicles a queer coming-of-age love story. With its lyrics balancing between vulnerability and raging catharsis, MacInizby commands the spotlight as she advances in the indie-rock scene with her debut single.

    MacInizby is the passion project of Maggie Bishop, a recent graduate of NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. While Bishop released an album and an EP under her own name in high school, she wanted to separate herself from her old acoustic, bubbly rock sound. Her music, along with herself, matured throughout her four years of college. It was this evolution that transformed Maggie Bishop into MacInizby. 

    MacInizby is the surname of Bishop’s Scottish grandparents. Not only does the name harken back to Bishop’s heritage but it’s also a reminder of her days as a drummer in Scottish marching bands. MacInizby continued to play in a variety of bands throughout college. However, unlike the traditional Scottish marching bands of her youth, MacInizby now played with New York City’s indie rock bands, including Bec Lauder and The Noise, Breaker, and Rose Paradise. 

    Through collaborating with multiple NYC bands, MacInizby learned the art of collaboration. MacInizby recalled how she lacked this joint effort in her early high school years, crafting her songs in isolation. It was an isolation that slowly disintegrated the more she stepped behind the drum kit, working with various bands. She came to value other’s insights and perspectives on her music. It was this maturation as an artist that would help to inform her latest release, “Closet.”

    Closet” was co-produced by MacInizby’s college friend Jacob Geoffery, who also played lead guitar on the track. The addition of Geoffery’s rhythmic guitar riffs helped transform “Closet” from an acoustic demo that MacInizby created early on in 2023 as a school assignment into an energetic, hypnotic, indie-rock single. MacInizby nurtured her acoustic demo 24/7 to make this metamorphosis complete. She recorded takes after takes of guitar, bass, vocals, and backing vocals, later editing them all together in her room. So every sound you hear on the track, excluding the lead guitar, is made and produced by MacInizby.

    MacInizby admitted the numerous takes and recordings were due to her perfectionism, which she struggled with. “It’s hard to reconcile what you think something should sound like and what something does sound like, because it’s never going to be exactly what you hear in your head,” MacInizby stated. “But I think that’s the beauty of music production. Weird things and mistakes happen, but there’s beauty in it. I’m trying to allow myself to create without always being an editor or critic in my head.”

    MacInizby’s dedication paid-off as the result is a single reminiscent of the late ‘90s and early 2000s with heartfelt lyrics that reach one’s core. MacInizby best summed-up her creation herself. When creating the song, she said, “I try to explore like, What would Phoebe Bridgers sound like if she were writing to an Avril Lavigne track?” Inspiration from Phoebe Bridgers is clearly visible in MacInizby’s debut single. Take Bridgers’ track “I Know The End.” Bridgers’ mellow beat that’s interrupted by her screaming is mimicked in MacInizby’s quiet vulnerability and raging catharsis. The two seemingly contradicting natures are blended together so beautifully that tears will well up all the way from the pit of the listener’s stomach.

    MacInizby’s passion and meaningful lyrics also hit the listener’s heart. The lyrics highlight the struggles of a queer relationship. It tells the story of a first love, falling in love with someone, who isn’t ready to share that love with the rest of the world. While MacInizby has written love stories in the past, she has never expressed the queerness of those relationships until now. “I’ve never really been in touch with my emotions or able to explain that to people, especially as a young queer kid growing up, who didn’t always feel like I could talk about how I was feeling,” MacInizby said. “Songwriting is a place for me to allow myself to be introspective and feel things to their full extent.” She hopes to provide this place for others through her music. 

    That place will only continue to expand as MacInizby writes more music in the upcoming year. With talk of another single release later this year and a potential EP release next year, fans eagerly await to see this new artist carve out a space for herself in NYC’s indie rock scene.

    But fans don’t need to wait for the release of more singles. If you’re in the New York area, MacInizby will be performing this Monday, June 24 at the Map Room at Bowery Electric located at 327 Bowery Street. She’ll be performing alongside Lillian F**king Jones and Emily Patt. Doors open at 7:00 pm for a night of high energy melodies. 

    She’ll also be performing the following day, Tuesday, June 25 at Pink Frog Cafe located at 221 North 9th Street in Brooklyn, as part of the Song Suffragettes, an event highlighting the best women singer-songwriters in NYC. This event will be a change of pace from the night before. MacInizby will forgo her energetic persona for that of the acoustic, melodic Maggie Bishops.   • Charley Orlando Releases Captivating New Single “Slipstream”

    Syracuse native Charley Orlando has released his newest single, “Slipstream.” Featuring an easy-listening guitar melody accompanied by a hint of a folky/country twang, the song presents itself with a laid-back, calming presence to all listeners.

    Over the last 30 years, Charley Orlando has developed an impressive reputation as a musician. With an impressive 28 Grammy Ballot nominations, 18 releases, and over 30 years of touring, he has cemented his place as an influential and respected musician in the industry. Other than his career as a solo musician, Orlando is an active group performer. He has performed as part of Ruha, which releases its own, original music, and bob., a Bob Dylan tribute band. His music is a unique blend of blues, folk, and rock, with heartfelt lyrics that resonate with audiences around the world.

    Orlando’s latest single, “Slipstream,” is the second of a series of singles that he plans to release over the next year. Much like his last single, “California,” Slipstream embodies the best elements of music from the late 60s and early 70s. The easy-going vibes set by the instrumental, along with masterful lyrics that display sensitivity and vulnerability, are reminiscent of artists like Bob Dylan, Seals and Crofts, Steely Dan, and more. The instrumentals offer a perfect blend of blues and rock that makes the single stand out as an easy listening tool. Despite its ongoing themes of anxiety, pain, and struggle, Charley Orlando’s “Slipstream” offers a relaxed, comforting, and secure peace of mind.

    Lyrically, the single reads as a plea for help in times of struggle. The line “My sweet friend, get me out of this slipstream” repeated throughout each chorus tells us where Orlando is coming from. But despite the pleas to be saved, Orlando’s steady, delicate voice tells us that there is still hope. Whatever may have caused the metaphorical slipstream, someone will be there to help get you out of it. Even if he is unsure, he knows that there is someone who will always be by his side. It is a message of a precious relationship that one can only hope to have. For those who do, it would only make them even more appreciative of their loved ones.

  • Brooklyn-Based Fox Indigo Releases “Trail of Hearts”

    On June 14, award-winning songwriter and indie singer Fox Indigo, residing in Brooklyn, released her new single “Trail of Hearts.” With the tragic lyrics, and a soulful voice full of emotion on top of the energetic, jumpy backing track, Fox Indigo tells the tragic story of an intricate love triangle that ends in betrayal, heartbreak, and jealousy from all parties. Her newest single, “Trail of Hearts,” is just another example of her masterful storytelling through music.

    Fox Indigo is an award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer living in New York City. Before venturing out as a solo artist, Indigo was the frontwoman of indie rock band American Fever. After her departure from the group, she went on to compose the score for the independent musical “BLOOM,” which she also co-wrote, starred in, and directed. In 2023, the cast performed the full musical at the SheNYCArts festival in New York. “BLOOM” won Indigo and her co-writer Ashlyn Bondurant the Rooftop Writer’s Award in 2023.

    During the COVID-19 pandemic, Fox Indigo wrote her first solo album, Man on the Moon, and released in 2022. Following the release of her musical, she is back and better than ever with her new song, “Trail of Hearts.” The single marks the highly-anticipated return of the pure, raw talent Fox Indigo embodies through her storytelling.

    When juxtaposed against other music in the indie rock scene, “Trail of Hearts” immediately stands out. It’s clear that Fox Indigo draws her inspiration from a wide variety of artists. Sufjan Stevens, Beethoven, Regina Spektor, and the Beach Boys, (just to name a few) are only the beginning. As a classically trained musician, Fox Indigo mixes elements of jazz, rock, funk, and classical genres into her music. This single is no different.

    Upon first listen, “Trail of Hearts” doesn’t sound like the typical indie-rock song. Piano chords in the pre-chorus and chorus and Fox Indigo’s punchy style of singing bring out the elements of jazz. Fox Indigo’s inspirations from classical music come through with the help of the violins. Combined with a group of talented musicians and other producers at the New School and Brooklyn College, “Trail of Hearts” displays Fox Indigo’s talent for composition.

    The song’s lyrics bring it to the next level. With Fox Indigo’s growling vocals make lyrics like “And I’m so tired of having to get over things / Can’t anything stick? / For now, we’re young & beautiful / She is so beautiful / But it’s a goddamn trick” sound desperate and angry. It’s an honest perspective of how love triangles affect our emotions, lead us to jealousy, and test our patience with the ones we love. At other times, her wavering falsetto makes highly emotional moments like “She burns like the sun we idolize / God, she’s just like Marilyn Monroe / Leaving a trail of hearts / But she doesn’t know” sound as passive-aggressive, jealous, and vindictive as it should be.

    Who wouldn’t be heartbroken and angry if their partner was looking at someone else, especially someone who is as beautiful as the iconic Marilyn Monroe? With this song, Fox Indigo shows us an honest look at how love triangles affect us. Through the brassy sounds of her jazz-inspired voice and the fusion of genres otherwise separate, “Trail of Hearts” is a fresh new single that showcases the artist’s incredible ability for storytelling.

  • Hipsy Gap Release Inspiring New Single “Nothing’s Good Enough”
