  • Carnegie Hall Remembers Paco de Luciá

On Feb. 20, Carnegie Hall remembered the legendary flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía who passed away on Feb. 25, 2014. Over 30 top artists including some of those close to him gathered to remember his teachings and celebrate flamenco.

Paco de Lucía Festival at Carnegie Hall

The Paco de Lucía Legacy Festival is a testament to the enduring legacy of a musical genius and promises to be an unparalleled celebration of the art of flamenco. This extraordinary event brings together world-class musicians, pays tribute to the profound influence of Paco de Lucía, and showcases the vibrant talent of established and emerging flamenco artists.

An opening night cocktail reception was held in the Rohatyn and Shorin Club Rooms at Carnegie Hall before the emotional night of music, attended by numerous people linked to the musician, as well as figures such as Guillermo Fesser and Juan Luis Cano, the basketball player José Manuel Calderón, the award-winning Latin jazz musician and composer Paquito D’Rivera, among others.

The Consul General of Spain in New York, Caridad Batalla, congratulated the Paco de Lucía Foundation for its initiative, confirmed the support of her consulate, and thanked “all the institutions that disseminate Spanish culture.”

Paco de Lucía’s widow, Gabriela Canseco, announced that “this week we brought together musicians who are part of Paco’s great family, musicians who, although some did not know each other, are all united by their music. They all converge because they have drawn on Paco’s work, whether they have played with him or not. Thirty-three musicians who come from different parts of the world and have been living together for four days, rehearsing, remembering, and talking about Paco non-stop,” she said. “Starting tonight they meet in various spaces to translate all those emotions through their personality, their knowledge, and their instruments. They are perfect conditions for Paco’s music to fly and pure magic to occur.”

Magic hit the stage of Carnegie Hall with well-known artists like Diego El Cigala, José Mercé, Carmen Linares, Al di Meola, Rubén Blades, Sílvia Pérez Cruz, and Farruquito, as well as the members of the two sextets that Lucía surrounded himself in his career. Over three hours, the large cast performed classic songs from Paco de Lucía’s repertoire such as “I Only Want to Walk,” “Monasterio de Sal,” “Luzia, La Barrosa” and the popular rumba “Entre dos Aguas,” adding the finishing touch to the concert.

Coming up next at the festival on Feb. 22 are cajon maestros El Piraña and Makarines teaching a compás master class at KJCC-NYU, with a night of surprises at Town Hall with Flamenco Summit Meets New York. Flamenco, Jazz, Latin, and African music will go hand in hand with names like Niño Josele, Rubén Blades, Josemi Carmona, Antonio Rey, Richard Bona, and Pepe Habichuela. The event will feature the dancers Farruquito, Karime Amaya, and Farru. The program includes Alain Pérez, Rafael Riqueni, Antonio Sánchez, and Silvia Pérez Cruz.

On February 23, the Instituto Cervantes New York will host Puro Flamenco, a recital starring Pepe Habichuela, Rafael Riqueni, and Carmen Linares, among others.

Finally, on February 24 at 4 p.m., Quad Cinema will host the screening of the film The Search by Curro Sánchez, son of Paco de Lucía, about the figure of his father. That same morning, at the Ángel Orensanz Foundation, the unreleased album Pepito y Paquito will be presented and the festival will officially close.

  • Carnegie Hall Celebrates Steve and Eydie – One of Show Business’ Greatest Couples

Carnegie Hall will celebrate an iconic show business duo, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé, this Valentine’s Day. The Hall will host a private reception on Wednesday, February 14 in their Susan W. Rose Archives as The Lawrence Family Foundation honors Steve & Eydie with a generous endowment contribution to the Carnegie Hall Education Endowment Fund.

Carnegie Hall Celebrates Steve and Eydie

Steve and Eydie were 1950s hits, where they performed for decades on various shows beginning with Tonight Starring Steve Allen. The duo would perform musically in the big band, swing, and doo-wop styles. Together, the duo became iconic, and their impact lasts to this day. The duo left an indelible impression on popular music.

The celebration will showcase an orchestra conducted by the couple’s son David Lawrence. Alongside David will be Tony Award-winner Debbie Gravitte. Together, they will honor Steve and Eydie by playing and performing their classic hits from back in the day.

“As native New Yorkers, we know that Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gormé’s Carnegie Hall concerts in the 1980s represented a special musical homecoming for both of them, even after they had experienced so many great successes across the music world. Fans absolutely loved their Carnegie Hall performances, now considered a cherished part of the Hall’s history. We’re very grateful to the Lawrence family for honoring their legacy in this meaningful way, providing generous support that will help young musicians as they prepare to take to Carnegie Hall’s stage and beyond.”

Clive Gillinson, Carnegie Hall’s Executive and Artistic Director

  • Alice Coltrane’s Spirited 1971 Performance at Carnegie Hall to Be Released

In 1971, harpist/pianist Alice Coltrane performed at Carnegie Hall for a special gala benefiting the Integral Yoga Institute. Backed by an all-star group of musicians, Coltrane delivered a captivating set which will now be available in its entirety for the very first time.

    Alice Coltrane Carnegie Hall

On March 22, Alice Coltrane – The Carnegie Hall Concert (Impulse!), will finally bring the complete document of Coltrane’s Carnegie Hall performance to fans worldwide.

Held four years after John Coltrane’s untimely passing and recorded by Impulse!, this deeply spiritual performance marked Alice’s first as a leader at Carnegie Hall.  The concert arrived at a pivotal moment in both Coltrane’s musical career and her spiritual journey. She had just released her fourth solo album, the universally acclaimed Journey in Satchidananda, and had deepened her spiritual quest over a five-week trip to India. Her band that night added two members from her teacher/guru Satchidananda’s circle — Kumar Kramer and Tulsi Reynolds, playing harmonium and tamboura, respectively. They provided a distinctly Eastern flavor to a large jazz ensemble largely comprised of collaborators with her late great husband, sax giant John Coltrane. The group included legendary saxophonists Pharoah Sanders and Archie Shepp, bassists Jimmy Garrison and Cecil McBee and drummers Ed Blackwell and Clifford Jarvis

Coltrane’s set began with two transcendental tunes from the recently-released Journey in Satchidananda, the title track and “Shiva-Loka.”

The live version of the title tune is the perfect scene setter. It begins with a hypnotic riff by the bass duo of Garrison and McBee, followed by celestial waves of harmonic washes from Coltrane’s harp.  Sanders follows with a wonderful flute solo, with hummed and vocalized harmony, before Shepp brings it home with a bluesy, chromatic excursion on his piercing soprano sax. “Shiva-Loka” is another one chord modal romp which gets deeper with each passing minute.. It is underpinned by a repetitive riff which seems a tribute/lift to/from John Coltrane’s “Equinox.”  Alice’s harp casts a heavenly backdrop for a skronking sax solo by Sanders and then a thunderous drum duet.

The remaining two tracks, “Africa” and “Leo,” are covers of latter-day classics by her husband John.  For these long journeys, Alice is at the piano providing chordal colors and the occasional solos. “Africa” stretches out to 27+ minutes, with another explosive drum duet, bass solos and plenty of frenzied soloing by Sanders and Shepp in the Trane tradition– a sound that closely captures what John and his crew were conjuring on latter-day recordings like “Live in Japan.”

This year Impulse! and Verve Label Group have partnered with The John & Alice Coltrane Home to launch the “Year of Alice,” a year-long celebration of Alice Coltrane’s profound work.  At the center of the celebration are Coltrane’s groundbreaking recordings for Impulse!, and the label will be working in tandem with The John & Alice Coltrane Home for varied activations throughout the year. To kick off the year-long celebration, there will be special night of performers and speakers that include Ravi ColtraneMichelle ColtraneBrandee Younger and more at the legendary Birdland on February 22.
