  • Gangstagrass Release Funky New Sophomore Single “Good at Being Bad”

NYC Bluegrass hip-hop group Gangstagrass has released their latest funk-infused single titled, “Good at Being Bad.” The group stands for a unique and true musical genre of their own creation that merges the styles of country/bluegrass and hip hop. The latest single from the group exhibits their talent and diversity greatly.

Gangstagrass has also revealed a new 10-track album titled, The Blackest Thing On The Menu. The group delves deeper into the fundamental sounds of each genre, while preserving their own unique blend and sound. “Good at Being Bad” is complete with masterful mandolin playing, dynamic production, and energetic vocals.

The tune seamlessly blends funk with Gangstagrass’s distinctive fusion of bluegrass and hip-hop. The group originated in Brooklyn, but the sound they possess transcends city, state, and country. They are a diverse blend of sound, and the two genres reflect a coming together of American values.

This rebellious collective has achieved unparalleled success in crafting an innovative sound rooted in historically significant heritage. Gangstagrass emphasizes the value of education, frequently conducting workshops for K-12, college students, and adults of diverse backgrounds. Whether through engaging Q&A sessions, historical lessons, or spontaneous music tutorials, the group staunchly advocates for imparting well-rounded knowledge to everyone.

“Working with Gangstagrass was awesome. I had been hip to them for a few years and was really diggin’ what they were doing. Mixing bluegrass with hip hop! Quite out of the box thinking. A lot of worlds coming together. I have always been a fan of bluegrass and have worked on a few records. When we got in the studio, I thought the band was exceptionally talented. Also, I was a rapper myself in the late 80’s and early 90’s, so this scratched my classic hip hop itch with a new school twist. So, to record these amazing lyricists with a live smackin’ band… what more could you ask for!!”

    Boo Mitchell

Gangstagrass’ music is a must-listen. Their amazingly different sound is something to certainly lay your ears on.

  • Saint Vitus Bar Closure Leaves Many Questions

Members of New York City’s metal scene are scrambling to rebook shows as Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn was shut down by The NYC Department Of Buildings in the middle of Balmora’s set at the Mindforce show on Feb. 16. Many are questioning what happened and what to do next.

Saint Vitus Bar has been in operation since 2011 but since 2017, the company started receiving complaints about its certificate of occupancy, which got the attention of the city’s building department.

As Gotham reported, in May and June of 2023, the venue received dozens of identical complaints alleging a lack of maximum occupancy signs, an inappropriate certificate of occupancy, and a missing Public Assembly Certificate of Operation. The complaints started threatening to get the city involved, falling silent until September. This recent complaint sparked the inspection during the metal show.

As of Friday, September 22, 2023 the following are facts about 1120 Manhattan Avenue know to the public as Saint Vitus Bar: 1) Saint Vitus Bar does not have any maximum occupancy signs posted anywhere, and more often than not they host more people than their allotted maximum capacity. 2) Saint Vitus Bar’s most recent Certificate of Occupancy on file with the Department of Buildings does not allow it to operate as an eating/drinking establishment. There is no other Certificate of Occupancy or Letter of No Objection that supersedes their Certificate of Occupancy dated November 12, 1953…I will continue to make this complaint on a daily basis until either the Department of Buildings performs an inspection or until Saint Vitus Bar can remedy their situation.

Recent complaint excerpt- reported by Metal Injection

The main question plaguing the venue owners and staff is who could have made these complaints. Do they have some personal vendetta against the venue? Why would the DOB come during the show? As one of the last independent venues operating in the city, it is a loss for the underground community. Bands scheduled for February and March now have to cancel shows and find new venues, which is difficult in a city like New York where acts are booked months in advance.

With the fishiness of the similar complaints, people believe it might be one disgruntled community member who was upset by the noise. Obviously, the venue needs to get their paperwork and rules in order, but hopefully, this isn’t the end of Saint Vitus.

After announcing their new album and releasing the first single and video, “Lyrical Genius,” featuring Grandmaster Caz, Saigon continues to pay homage to hip hop’s golden era with this latest release with The Jordan Era‘s production entirely by Fredro. After all, on “Get Loose” the Brooklyn native channels the frenzied, experimental sound of hip hop from the early 90’s, while Pete Rock is at his introspective best. Moreover, the project features guest appearances from the aforementioned Grandmaster Caz and Pete Rock. Along with Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Grand Puba, Sadat X, Rockness Monsta, Craig G, Ill Skratch and possibly more.

  • Gangstagrass Release Music Video for Latest Single, “The Only Way Out Is Through”

Bluegrass Hip-Hop group Gangstagrass has released a music video for their latest single, “The Only Way Is Through.” The release of the new video featuring musical icon Jerry Douglas, as well as their recently dropped single is propelling the group forward and further narrowing the gap between bluegrass and hip-hop.

The composition showcases the meshing of expert banjo artistry, dynamic production, and the unique facets of Gangstagrass music. The vocals are whisked through an inspiring chorus, complete with the Lowdown Brass Band on horns.

Gangstagrass was birthed as a studio experiment in 2006 by Brooklyn-based producer Rench. The combination of country/bluegrass vocals, guitar, and hip-hop beats allowed for Gangstagrass to evolve. The group grew into a vibrant and improvisational band, forging unity and creative diversity from the most unexpected of origins.

The group harmonizes an array of talents from Rench, R-SON the Voice of Reason (MC), and Dolio the Sleuth (MC, Vocals), in addition to featuring Dan “Danjo” Whitener (Banjo, Vocals), and B.E. Farrow (Fiddle, Vocals), among other brilliant instrumentalists.

Gangstagrass has culminated various sounds from across the country. The ensemble has skillfully blended the traditional sounds of fiddles and banjos with contemporary hip-hop beats. This unseen blend and innovation have propelled the band to worldwide success.

The music video for the recently released single, “The Only Way Out Is Through” shows the members of the group performing the song whilst facing the camera. Throughout the video, random objects like silly string, paper balls, cardboard, foodstuffs, etc. are being hurled at each person in the spotlight.

The music video is meant to be humorous, wacky, and borderline absurd. The directors of the video, Tough Dumplin and MZ.ICAR did an excellent job at conveying the groups fun spirit and goofy nature, while also showcasing the grand musicianship with the single played throughout.

  • Brooklyn In Focus: The Forefront of American Music and Art Culture

The music and art scenes in Brooklyn hold a rich and diverse history that plays a fundamental role in shaping American music culture. Music and art cohesively work together to display emotion, purpose and influence one medium on the other, with the ability to connect communities of people from different backgrounds and cultures through audio and visual languages. Brooklyn’s music and art scenes bring unify the borough with diversity, a melting pot and continually at the forefront of American culture.

    The West Indie Day Parade

Now, and in decades prior, music and art have become a way of life to the rhythm of Brooklyn, one that is kept alive and running by successive generations of immigrants and transplants from across the world and nation. The power of creativity is not just about entertainment, but about sparking a community to create change, awareness, freedom and unity, becoming a culture that exists as a city’s heartbeat.

The culture of art exploded in the early 1980s from street art, which put the spotlight on local talent, including TAKI 183 who entangled the graffiti movement, highlighting the power of making a statement and pushing extensive boundaries. In the 2000’s, the Brooklyn art scene got hotter with the digital age and the use of technology as a tool to present digital born art, increasing our understanding of unique characteristic features. Artists began collaborating and the rise of art hubs allowed for universal creativity. Today, art in Brooklyn is accessible and continually celebrated.

Music records the collective and diverse history of Brooklyn, spanning across genres and generations. In the 1920‘s, jazz became the central sound, evolving and influencing numerous genres to this day. By the 1960s and 70s, the borough became a hub for soul, funk and R&B, and by the 1990’s, the growth of hip hop culture continues national influence today. By the 21st century, the rise of music festivals including BRIC, Afropunk, Brooklyn Folk and Brooklyn Hip-Hop festivals – as well as dozens of cultural and smaller music festivals, parades and events – continuing to bring the borough together through all walks of life.

    The West Indie Day Parade

The West Indian Day parade has become one of New York’s major cultural celebrations and takes place on Labor Day to parade down the eastern parkway. West Indian culture trace their ancestors back to the Caribbean, where the island takes pride in multifaceted colorful dances, parties, and annual carnival celebrations.

With vibrant sequins and feathers, the parade highlights an extraordinary range of people and places that show all walks of life and the importance of unity. Caribbean art has become a diverse reflection of culture, seen in their costumes and elaborate face masks in a wide variety of styles inspired by natural and spiritual cohesive elements. The colorful traditions of Carnival and rich presentation of cultural identity has a boundless impact on the art that emerges through the historical parade that showcases pride, heritage, culture and the importance of identity.

Cultural identity has served as a catalyst for artistic expression, defined by music and art, allowing artists to explore their roots and traditions that serve as an intertwined visual language, creating a narrative that speaks to people of all ethnicities, religions and backgrounds.  Not only does the West Indian Day parade attract a community for the annual celebration, it celebrates a bigger purpose of honor, respect, and support from the borough.

The Brooklyn Record and Arts Fair

The Brooklyn Flea Record and Art Fair – held on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at the Marsha P. Johnson State Park – celebrated 12 years of vinyl treasures with over 40 labels, record stores and collectors. The impact and resurgence of vinyl records on the music industry has revolutionized the creation of music, distribution, consumption, and ultimately helped acknowledge the value of the music community. Vinyl allowed music to become more accessible, enabling a visually captivating and engaging representation that highlights a deeper appreciation for the overall experience of music.

The record fair celebrates the unity of both mediums, a way for people of all ages to come together to see vendors that also value the evolution of music over the ages. Including alternative, indie, rock, metal, jazz, classical, pop, blues and much more. Artists and music enthusiasts come together to appreciate the tangible experience of holding a physical record that connects them to the roots of music, enhancing the auditory experience that keeps the love for music alive.

Art and music go hand in hand, sharing a relationship that evokes an emotional response and involves elements of rhythm, harmony and texture that coexist with one another. Music and art are tools for communication, ingrained into the fabric of our society, our relationships and can be understood universally beyond culture and language.

The harmony between the two share narrative moments, they inspire and influence one another, that create a unique dynamic that allows music and art to become part of the culture. Art and music share an intertwining relationship that cohesively evokes emotions, community and promote creativity. Building a culture as seen in Brooklyn permits an exploration of identity, communication and reflects symbiosis between the two art forms.

  • Monarch Releases Cathartic Rock Single “If You Ask Me”

monarch’s If You Ask Me is unapologetically raw, with a refreshing theme of self-ownership. The clear-cut language adds intensity to the song’s powerful message- stressing the resistance to give in to outside influence or control.

    monarch if you ask me

Lyrically, the song takes us to the aftermath of boundary-pushing chaos in a compelling way. The relationship between the lyrical skill and instrumental intensity elevates the overall experience that the song brings.

Based in Brooklyn, rock group monarch formed in 2021. This spirited band has always gone beyond the limits of musical expression, captivating audiences with their powerful performances. With a reputation for powerful live performances, this group is a noteworthy act that will leave a mark on the local music scene. Monarch has plans to take the stage all over NYC in 2024 and amaze a wide range of audiences with their electrifying energy.

Sarah hopes the song lyrics and feel can bring comfort to those who can, regrettably, relate to this kind of circumstance. The song should also let listeners know that “they’re not alone in the feeling of feeling taken advantage of”. Sarah adds, “I had trouble writing a song of this essence, our music isn’t typically ‘angry’ in this sense, so I had trouble at first going into that headspace. Although it is part of my story, we created a powerful song out of it.”

“I wrote the lyrics for this song after the countless times someone has crossed my boundaries, made me uncomfortable, someone being too touchy etc. On the other hand you shouldn’t have to teach someone how to respect people and their space.”

    -Sarah Michelle Lee (Vocalist)

If You Ask Me is more than just a song; it’s an experience that guides listeners to a place where chaos and order clash.

  • Boojum Go Through the Looking Glass for Debut Performance

The New York City psychedelic rock scene gained a formidable new entrant when Brooklyn-born Boojum took the stage for their first-ever show on Saturday, January 20.

Performing at the combination music venue/recording studio at Brooklyn’s Firstlive, the four-piece band of Chris Mackin (guitar/vocals), Josh Santiago (guitar/vocals), Sarah Elaz (bass/vocals), and Dan Shein (drums) debuted twelve original songs, with lyrics by poet and translator Tom Mackin.

Boojum was born out of a unique one-night-only event at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl that saw Elaz join the Beatles jam band Walrus (Mackin, Santiago and Shein) for a performance inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Refining that original music and doing away with the theatrical trappings of the “Walrus in Wonderland” show, Boojum’s debut was musically focused, showcasing a creative abundance across an inspired two-sets that kept attendees rapt with refreshing original jams.

While the strength of Tom Mackin’s songwriting was apparent when the audience insisted on an unprompted call-and-response during “Vanish Away,” the highlight of the evening was the original “The Mouse.” This bass-driven funky groove led the audience into a fist-pumping “Oysters” to close the first set. When the band retook the stage attendees were treated to another series of originals, peaking with the grooving “Looking Glass House.”

The full technical capabilities of Firstlive were also on display Saturday night, with Boojum not only leaning into the jam-scene trend of offering a multi-camera live stream of the show but also using the performance to begin recording an inaugural live album.

In recording their debut EP live, Boojum heightened the atmosphere with added excitement for attendees. The decision to eschew the controlled environment of a studio for the spontaneity and vibrancy of a live performance demonstrated confidence in craft and a belief in the power of the band’s live presentation.

Boojum’s debut performance is sure to leave a lasting impression when the inaugural show turns into a full album this spring. Their next performance is at The Sultan Room on March 16. The show will feature dancers, visuals, and guests with the band performing wonderland inspired songs from their forthcoming EP and more. Tickets are on sale now.
