  • In Focus: Tinashe Returns to New York With Sold-Out Brooklyn Paramount Show

R&B sensation Tinashe returned to New York for her second show this year with a dazzling performance at the newly renovated Brooklyn Paramount November 4.

Part of the singer-songwriter’s Match My Freak world tour, the sold-out show followed the release of her seventh studio album Quantum Baby—featuring the viral lead single “Nasty,” which propelled Tinashe to her first solo entry on the Billboard Hot 100 this summer.

    Tinashe

Tinashe’s smooth vocals and expert choreography were as fierce as ever Monday night, as her ever-growing fanbase packed every inch of the 2,700-capacity music hall. After a soulful opening set from Raveena, Tinashe made a confident entrance and kicked off the show with “Getting No Sleep,” the second single from Quantum Baby

    Tinashe

The historic theatre felt more like a vibrant nightclub as fans danced and sang along to Tinashe’s hits like “Needs,” “2 On,” “Gravity,” and more. Backed by a skillful team of dancers, Tinashe never missed a beat as she moved through each precisely choreographed number, complete with unique visual effects for each track. As both a masterful vocalist and a former competitive dancer, Tinashe’s stage presence is magnetic, and the crowd erupted with cheers at nearly every move.

    Tinashe

Even before heading out on the road, Tinashe has had a busy 2024—the release of Quantum Baby amplified her pop notoriety as “Nasty” quickly became a viral sensation. She was also featured on Charli Xcx’s track “B2B” from brat and it’s completely different but also still brat, a remixed companion to one of the most culturally significant albums of the year, as well as “More Than a Little Bit” from Grammy winner Kaytranada’s album Timeless

The Brooklyn Paramount show looked to be an upgrade in production value from Tinashe’s February BB/Ang3l tour stop at Terminal 5, before “Nasty” was released. Virality aside, Tinashe has been hard at work delivering vibrant performances and R&B hits for years, and it seems the public is finally taking notice.

“I think the trickiest part about this record was trying to be authentic about what had been going on with me, without writing something super dark and without glossing over it, either. Because, to me, it was really important that hope remain at the core of this whole thing. People need hope. I need hope. And when I think about what hope is – it’s having the courage to walk towards something that you think can be better, while fully acknowledging the darkness and reality around you. That was the goal, walking into this album, which was actually really tricky – to make something that rang true to what was on my mind, but that had this much groove and that would be fun to dance to. You know, to me, they’re like Trojan Horses, the message is hiding in the melody.”

  • St. Vincent Leaves Fans Screaming For More After Second Brooklyn Paramount Show

On a gorgeous late-summer evening in the heart of downtown Brooklyn, Anne Erin Clark (better known as St. Vincent) performed a second consecutive sold-out show at Brooklyn Paramount this past Wednesday, September 11.

Touring in support of her seventh studio album dubbed All Born Screaming, released on April 26, Clark not only self-produced the LP featuring a bevy of special guest artists, but also released it on her own Total Pleasure Records label.

Originally opened in 1928 and having hosted seminal artists the likes of Miles Davis, Buddy Holly, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, the 2,700-capacity Brooklyn Paramount reopened its famed doors this past March after years of restoration, and since doing so, has been a destination spot for industry veterans and rising stars alike.

With a constant stream of genre-spanning musical talent gracing its stage for the last six months, tonight was no different. Providing opening support for St. Vincent on this 12-date tour of North America, which launched in Boston, Massachusetts on September 5, was experimental electronic musician Yves Tumor (born Sean Lee Bowie). Taking the stage at exactly 8:00 pm, the 34-year old musician who was born in Miami, Florida and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee immediately launched into an eleven-song set with a heavy dose of tracks taken from their fifth and most recent studio album titled Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds).

Yves Tumor | Photo Credit: Michael Dinger

A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, Yves Tumor’s atmospheric stage lighting was the perfect accompaniment to their tonal palette – ranging from the sonically atmospheric to vibes of hypnotic trance – interspersed with glam cockiness resembling that of Prince. Exuding a kinetic stage presence and energy rarely seen, Yves Tumor was backed by a trio of extremely talented musicians who delivered the rock neo-psychedelia goods, complete with jangly guitar, looping basslines and a 4/4 drum beat signature.

Born screaming in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but a New Yorker at her core, I was introduced to St. Vincent a decade ago when she released her self-titled fourth studio album to critical acclaim. Like many of her fans, I was drawn to her melodic, distortion-rich guitar playing. Certainly not underrated, she is often cited as being among the best guitarists of all time, including a nod from Rolling Stone last year. Armed with her Ernie Ball Music Man signature guitar, St. Vincent brought the packed house to its knees on multiple occasions, often with humor:

I have to tell you about the first night that I ever met this woman [touring bassist Charlotte Kemp Muhl].  I went over to her house, and she put an albino snake around my neck. And she said ‘Hey, I’m Charlotte.’ On that same night, I had taken mushrooms for the first time. And then, we walked home at 4:00 in the morning and we were walking by construction, you know, ConEd doing stuff down below. And we were like ‘Hey, can we go down there?’ And the dude was like ‘yeah.’ So, we crawled through the bowels of this city, and I can tell you that the bowels of this city are as beautiful as its face. And let that be said at all of our funerals. I love you so much New York.

    St. Vincent

The 100-minute long show featured twenty songs spread across fifteen years of St. Vincent’s discography, with “Birth in Reverse” and “Surgeon” substituted for “Krokodil” and “Year of the Tiger” the night before. The only album not represented in tonight’s setlist was her 2007 debut studio offering Marry Me.

After interacting with lucky fans in the first several rows center stage, falling backwards into their arms, the emotionally charged show culminated soon after with St. Vincent alone onstage for the encore, “Somebody Like Me” (Daddy’s Home, 2021). After the thunderous applause finally subsided, St. Vincent thanked Yves Tumor for opening the night and commenced the final number. Not a minute in, she exclaimed “Oh, I fucked this song, I fucked it so bad. I’m so sorry.” Erupting in a roar of laughter, the fans could not care less about the false start, but St. Vincent did – a testament to her professionalism as a musician. Retreating to her original position beneath the arch-framed stage design, St. Vincent came forth again to the edge of the stage apron and finished the show with style and grace, as if it could have ended any differently.

Following an appearance at Riot Fest in Chicago, Illinois on September 21, the next leg of St. Vincent’s tour resumes in Dublin, Ireland on October 13, concluding in Southbank, Australia on November 28.

Yves Tumor Setlist: God Is a Circle > Echolalia > In Spite of War > Gospel for a New Century > Jackie > Meteora Blues > Parody / Heaven Surrounds Us Like a Hood > M~~S B~~~~~E > Operator > Secrecy Is Incredibly Important to the Both of Them > Ebony Eye

St. Vincent Setlist: Reckless > Fear the Future > Los Ageless > Big Time Nothing > Marrow > Dilettante > Pay Your Way in Pain > Digital Witness > Sweetest Fruit > Flea > Cheerleader > Broken Man > Birth in Reverse > Surgeon > Hell Is Near > Candy Darling > New York > Sugarboy > All Born Screaming > Encore: Somebody Like Me

  • Brooklyn Based DIIV Returns With New Album

DIIV, a beloved band from Brooklyn, has once again captured the hearts of fans with their latest album, Frog in Boiling Water. This record showcases a band that has truly evolved while staying true to their atmospheric roots. The album and its singles—such as “Brown Paper Bag,”—have been met with widespread fan acclaim.

    The Album

Frog in Boiling Water is more than just a collection of songs; it’s a testament to DIIV’s perseverance and growth. The album’s creation was a four-year odyssey that nearly pushed the band to its limits. With a desire to push their sound to new frontiers, DIIV embarked on an ambitious journey, navigating their own relationships and the pressures of the music industry. Fraying friendships, financial strains, and creative differences marked the process, but the band emerged from this chaos with an album that dives deep into new lyrical and musical territories.

DIIV @ Brooklyn Paramount 8/7/2024 by Sam Schraub

The result is a record that is as gorgeous as it is haunted. Frog in Boiling Water balances powerful rhythms inspired by post-industrial sounds, creating a sound that is both mighty and ethereal. It’s a mesmeric reflection on endurance, capturing the essence of existing.

DIIV @ Brooklyn Paramount 8/7/2024 by Sam Schraub

If you missed DIIV at their most recent homecoming show at Brooklyn Paramount, make sure to catch them live the next time they’re in New York. With each performance, DIIV not only solidifies their place in the indie music scene but also redefines what it means to create immersive, emotional art.

  • The Church Co-Headline Brooklyn Paramount With Afghan Whigs On A Hot & Steamy NYC Night

A destination venue for industry veterans and rising stars, Brooklyn Paramount hosted The Church and The Afghan Whigs for their second co-headlining show on a 19-date tour this past Thursday evening, June 20.

Originally opened in 1928 and dubbed ‘America’s first movie theater built for sound,’ Brooklyn Paramount reopened its famed doors in the heart of downtown this past March, and since doing so, has seen a constant stream of genre-spanning musical talent – with a full slate of artists scheduled well into December. The night’s festivities were presented by WFUV, a non-commercial radio station owned by Fordham University, located on its Bronx campus, and nationally recognized for its alternative music format.

Providing opening support was Kristin Hersh, who in addition to her solo work which often features emotional vocals delivered in raw, visceral manner, is best known for her singing and songwriting in the alternative rock band Throwing Muses. Taking a lone seat at center stage promptly at 7:30 pm, Hersh warmed up the large swarm of fans who arrived early to see her 30 minute set, which comprised three Throwing Muses offerings and four tracks selected from her eleven solo albums – Hips and Makers (1994), Sunny Border Blue (2001), Crooked (2010) and Clear Pond Road (2023).

At 8:10 pm, The Afghan Whigs appeared onstage and immediately launched into a 15-song set spanning a nearly four decade career. Hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, the duo of frontman Greg Dulli and bassist John Curley – who started it all way back in 1986 – are cited as having influenced several musicians of high esteem in their own right, including fellow Ohio natives The National, Interpol, and The Gaslight Anthem, to name but a few.

An eclectic blend of alternative and indie rock, post-punk, grunge, and for good measure, R&B, the hour-long set kicked off with “Pantomima,” the lead single from Dulli’s 2020 solo album Random Desire. Apart from an astounding cover of English singer-songwriter Martina Topley‐Bird’s “Too Tough to Die” midway through, The Afghan Whigs gifted its fans several of what are considered the best tunes from their nine studio album catalog.

Standout numbers from the night included the moody and atmospheric “Debonair” (Gentlemen, 1993), fan favorite “Algiers” and “Matamoros” (Do to the Beast, 2014), the introspective “Oriole” (In Spades, 2017), and “Somethin’ Hot” (1965, 1998), featuring a driving rhythm accompanied by a sound palette of power guitar riffs and energetic percussion.

The Church are touring off the strength of their most recent two albums, the universally hailed album The Hypnogogue, and its companion science fiction concept album Eros Zeta and the Perfumed Guitars, released in 2023 and 2024, respectively. The Aussie psych-rock quintet of founder Steve Kilbey (lead vocals, bass), long-time collaborator Tim Powles (drummer), Ian Haug (guitarist formerly of Australian rock icons Powderfinger, who joined the band in 2013), Jeffrey Cain (multi-instrumentalist who has been a full-time member since early-2020), and Ashley Nalor (touring guitarist and backing vocalist for The Church since February 2020, best known for fronting the Melbourne-based band named Even) silently slithered onstage under the cover of darkness at approximately 9:45 pm.

As The Hypnogogue’s title track played over the house PA, the crowd waited in eager anticipation as the slow burning introduction, with its multiple sonic layers, continued to build momentum. At long last, the cinematic extravaganza was underway.

Steve Kilbey of The Church | Photo Credit: Michael Dinger

With selections presented from six LPs spread across their massive discography (25 studio albums in total), The Church’s dreamy psychedelia experience continued with “Myrrh” (Heyday, 1985), but not before Kilbey first greeted the more than 2,000 souls in attendance. “Good evening ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much. We are so happy to be here tonight. What a wonderful – the word splendid comes to my mind – what a splendid, old theater. Thanks so much for coming along.”

Kilbey introduced the next song, “Metropolis” (Gold Afternoon Fix, 1990), as “the last time we ever darkened the doorstep of commercial radio, 34 years ago, you may remember this one.” The proceeding mystical journey that he and his bandmates brought all of us on was filled with indelible highlights, with too many to list in this review. However, the goosebump-inducing moment that tops that list, for me at least, would have to be The Church’s performance of “No Other You” (The Hypnogogue), a heartfelt love song showcasing Kilbey’s voice filled with a yearning for a woman who cannot be replaced.

The Church | Photo Credit: Michael Dinger

Outside of their psychedelic-tinged, instant classics appearing on 1988’s Starfish, “Under The Milky Way” and “Reptile,” the album that put Kilbey and company on my radar as a 16-year old entranced by their anthemic songs filled with melody and orchestration, it was another track from The Hypnogogue that filled the venue with an overall sense of reflection. The operatic “Flickering Lights,” which found Haug taking up the mandolin, was appropriately rendered by The Church to a backdrop of bright white flashing stage lights and multicolored strobes.

The stellar live show culminated with two tracks collected from opposite ends of their storied career – “Last Melody” (Eros Zeta and the Perfumed Guitars, 2024) and “You Took” (The Blurred Crusade, 1982) – a trippy, cosmic jam filled with epic, swirling guitar.

Watch The Church perform two hit songs from their aforementioned fifth studio album Starfish, “Under The Milky Way” and “Reptile,” below:

Following the current run of North American tour dates which ends in Los Angeles on July 13, our favorite mates have cleared their calendar for the duration of the summer. However, if at the end of the year you find yourself in the Land Down Under, The Church have a series of six shows beginning at the Enmore Theatre in Newton on November 23, culminating at Hindley Street Music Hall in Adelaide on December 7. Dates sandwiched between include stops in St Kilda, Brisbane, Hobart and Perth.

Kristin Hersh Setlist: Eyeshine > Kay Catherine (Throwing Muses song) > Mississippi Kite > Your Ghost > City of the Dead (Throwing Muses song) > Bywater (Throwing Muses song) > Your Dirty Answer

The Afghan Whigs Setlist: Pantomima (Greg Dulli song) > Debonair > Catch a Colt > Algiers > 66 > Matamoros > What Jail Is Like > Too Tough to Die (Martina Topley‐Bird cover) > Light as a Feather > Oriole > It Kills > Demon in Profile > Going to Town > Somethin’ Hot > Summer’s Kiss

The Church Setlist: The Hypnogogue > Myrrh > Metropolis > C’est la vie > No Other You > Under the Milky Way > An Interlude > Flickering Lights > Reptile > Realm of Minor Angels > Grind > Last Melody > You Took

Following the release of their new single, music video, and a performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Red Clay Strays have announced additional dates to their 2024 nationwide headline tour, including a show at the Brooklyn Paramount on October 1. The tour commemorates the release of their highly anticipated second album, Made by These Moments, which will be available on July 26, 2024.

Formed in 2016 in Mobile, Alabama, The Red Clay Strays are Brandon Coleman (lead vocals, guitar), Drew Nix (electric guitar, vocals, harmonica), Zach Rishel(electric guitar), Andrew Bishop (bass), and John Hall (drums). Their latest single, “Wondering Why,” has pushed the band into the spotlight, spending six consecutive weeks at #1 on the Americana Singles chart.

The single has received widespread critical acclaim and has even brought the band to be nominated for Emerging Act of the Year at the 2024 Americana Music Awards. Regarding the song, Billboard praises the band saying, “Lead singer Coleman’s gruff, impassioned vocal shines here as always, bolstered by the group’s exemplary musicianship.”

Since their inception, The Red Clay Strays have reached innumerable success not only on the charts but with their tours as well. This year, the band made their Grand Ole Opry debut and toured across the U.S. Past shows include performing alongside country and Americana music’s biggest names, such as Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Elle King, and Old Crow Medicine Show. Their current tour features special guests such as The Rolling Stones, Carrie Underwood, and Grace Bowers & The Hodge Podge.

  • In Focus: Sum 41’s Final NYC Headline Show

On Monday, May 6 in Brooklyn, at the newly reopened Brooklyn Paramount, Canadian pop-punk sensation Sum 41 took the stage for their farewell performance in New York City.

Earlier this year the band announced it was calling it quits after 27 years, going out with a bang while celebrating their amazing career. The farewell tour coincides with the release of the new double album, Heaven :x: Hell, which came out March 29 of this year.

    Sum 41

The bill included opening act Joey Valence & Brae from Pennsylvania, an unexpected hip-hop duo, followed by The Interrupters, who are Los Angeles based and delivered an igniting set complete with confetti in the end.

To close out the night, Sum 41 of course! Being my first time seeing them, I have to say they put on an epic show, amazing production, filled with pyrotechnics, lasers, a beautiful light show and multiple use of streamers and confetti. A larger-than-life spectacle in a standing-room-only, sold out venue, is definitely the way to go, if you’re really gonna go.
