On a hot August 1st evening at Albany’s Jennings Landing, funk outfit Galactic closed out this year’s Alive at 5 summer concert series with a performance that was out of this world.
Galactic, originating from New Orleans, has been a powerhouse in the funk and jazz scenes since 1994, known for their electrifying live performances and eclectic sound. Their unique blend of funk, jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music, combined with Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph’s powerful vocals, creates an irresistible groove.
Albany-based band Hilltop opened the show, getting the crowd in the mood to groove with their lively performance. Their infectious energy set the tone for the night, building excitement and getting people vibing to the music.
Galactic took the stage next. Between singer Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph’s undeniable stage presence and the band’s exceptional musicianship, the show was a masterclass in funk. Highlights of the night included Jelly’s powerful rendition of “Right On,” Glen D. Andrews’ soulful “You Don’t Know,” and the crowd-pleasing “Crazyhorse Mongoose.”

The crowd, enthusiastic about enjoying the summer to its fullest, volleyed beach balls back and forth, while jet skis and boats passed by on the Hudson River, providing an exceptionally fun, summery backdrop. Galactic continues their tour, now heading west this summer.

The University of Albany Department of Music and Theatre has announced the lineup for their 2024-25 season. Performances for this season will begin on September 22 and the final show of the season is on Monday, May 5. All performances take place at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center on the main University of Albany campus at 1400 Washington Avenue.
This season’s repertoire consists of dozens of professional and student musicians with a variety of mediums. Choirs, student ensembles, professional duos, and more all come together on the UAlbany stage this season for a spectacular display of their talent. The UAlbany Theatre Department will be presenting three full student productions and offering five to six performances of each show, as well as its annual festival of new plays. Student productions include Machinal by Sophie Treadwell, Mary Shelley Meets Frankenstein by Kate Alice Walat, and Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show.
In total, UAlbany offers 27 incredibly diverse shows throughout the upcoming season. Multiple guest performers are included in the season, as well, including GRAMMY-award-winning Imani Winds and the Ulysses Quartet.

Amidst a slew of tour dates, Nas made a stop at Albany’s Palace Theatre this past Friday (July 19) and delivered an all-encompassing performance. In turn, the normally quiet-kept streets surrounding the Palace felt a simultaneous murmur between 7 and 8 p.m. on Friday night as hip hop fans came out in droves in support of Esco.
With both floors of the Palace decked out, the legendary rhymer offered a passionate rendition of his biggest hits, album cuts and freestyles.

Backed by longtime tour DJ and friend, Rochester’s own DJ Green Lantern, Nas offered fans a non-linear run through his historic discography. In truth, An Evening With Nas, gave the feel of a distant family gathering. As though Nas was kickin’ it with his hip hop cousins from Upstate.
The crowd’s appreciation was apparent as the 17-time Grammy-nominee was on the receiving end of the night’s first standing ovation within the first 20 minutes, after a flawless, passionate performance of “N.Y. State of Mind.” Green Lantern played to the lively crowd, riling them up with chants of “hip hop, hip hop,” before dropping the iconic DJ Premier scratches preluding “Nas Is Like” as the crowd roared their approval.

Similarly, performances of “Got Ur Self A…,” “Made You Look,” and “You Owe Me” all earned the crowd’s approval. Yet, the most well-received songs are the ones that capture Nas’ soulful essence. For instance, performances of “Life’s a Bitch,” “The World Is Yours” and “If I Ruled the World” had the crowd hung on every word, particularly the latter two which led to a theatre-wide serenade.
Such was the scene as a noticeably vibrant Esco basked in he and the crowd’s shared catharsis. Afterwards, in a moment of reflection over his long-career, the hip hop mogul thanked his long-time supporters and encouraged the vivacious crowd of about 1500 to “live vicariously through me. Iâm still outside.”
Memorable Moments
During this period of elation DJ Green Lantern upped it and announced a Nas and DJ Premier album slated for later this year. As the show waned, Nas honored both Prodigy and The Notorious B.I.G with special renditions dedicated to both fallen legends.

A large image of Prodigy appeared on the big-screen as he performed his verse on their classic hit, “It’s Mine.” He later shouted out Biggie before performing a special rendition of “One Love” over the “Sky’s The Limit” beat. Meanwhile a rendition of “Daughters” was cut short as Nas claimed it made him emotional, before transitioning to the more rugged “40-16 Building.” The show closed as the Queens native gave an impassioned performed “One Mic” to applause and shouts not to leave.
On Thursday, July 11, Hip Hop legend KRS-One electrified the crowd at Jennings Landing in Albany, part of the Alive at Five summer concert series. The show, packed with classic hits and vibrant energy, showcased KRS-One’s enduring influence in the Hip Hop world, creating an unforgettable experience for fans.
KRS-One hails from The Bronx and co-founded the iconic group Boogie Down Productions in the mid-1980s, solidifying his place in Hip Hop history. Regularly performing in New York, KRS-One’s connection to the state is undeniable, his current tour a celebration of his legacy and the ongoing influence in Hip Hop.
Opening for KRS was fellow Bronx native DJ Show, who got the crowd hyped by spinning some Hip Hop classics and getting the crowd dancing. He made it clear that if a track was made after 2010, he wasn’t playing it tonight.
Albany-based artist Ohzhe took the stage next. The 2024 Eddies Award nominee continued to excite the audience with his charismatic and energetic stage presence.
Ohzhe’s set ended with him hollering backstage to KRS-One, who was talking with fans behind the stage, asking if he wanted him to keep performing. This prompted KRS to join him on stage for an impromptu freestyle collaboration, illustrating why The Source called KRS “the greatest live emcee ever.”
The crowd roared as KRS-One delivered powerful performances of his classics, interspersed with insightful commentary, reinforcing his status as “Hip Hop’s first Master Teacher.” Near the end of the show, KRS and his crew brought out autographed tennis balls to throw into the audience. Giving some lucky fans a memento that will solidify this performance as unforgettable.
KRS-One’s show ended on a high note, with the crowd buzzing about the evening’s performances and some admiring their tennis balls as they left Jennings Landing. His tour continues, promising more incredible shows and affirming why he is regarded as Hip Hop royalty. Keep an eye out for his next New York stops for another chance to witness greatness.

Coming to Albany’s Capital Repertory Theatre (theREP) this summer is their very own rendition ofBeautiful: The Carole King Musical. Previews begin on Friday, July 12. The official opening night is Tuesday, July 16, and the show will run through Sunday, August 18.

The Tony® and Grammy Award®-winning Carole King musical thrilled Broadway audiences for six years, and now makes its way over to theREP in its own up-close-and-personal production for a unique experience unlike anything on Broadway. This production also sees the return of several alumni from theREP, including Elizabeth Nestlerode, playing the role of Carole King. Nestlerode returns to the MainStage in the titular role after playing Darlene in Honky Tonk Angels, and Evelyn/Mary Bailey in It’s A Wonderful Life. Shannon Rafferty (Cynthia Weil) and Taylor Hilt Mitchell (Barry Mann/Dance Captain) make their way back to theREP stage after stellar performances at theREP’s production of Jersey Boys earlier this year.
However, several actors make their debut at theREP with this production. Male lead Nikita Burshteyn (Gerry Goffin) is performing at theREP for the first time in his life after his landmark Off-Broadway performance as Romeo in Romeo and Bernadette.

The Green Island Gazebo (GIG), in Green Island, NY, located 10 minutes north of Albany, has announced the performance lineup of their annual summer concert series.
All GIG shows will be free to the public and take place every Wednesday between July 10 and August 28 at the scenic Lower Hudson Ave Park.
With a population of roughly 3,000 packed into just a square mile, Green Island is a tight-knit community. 2024 marks the 21st year of GIG’s annual summer concert series, now a staple in the town. The shows have always been held in the quaint Lower Hudson Ave Park waterside gazebo, which is the perfect spot to bring some lawn chairs and relax.
This year’s artists all performed at last year’s GIG summer series, except for Emmy Award-winner and former WNYT News Channel 13 news anchor, Jerry Gretzinger, who will perform a Frank Sinatra tribute show called “Sinatra: The Man. The Myth. The Music.” on July 24.
On top of their annual summer concert series, GIG also hosts the Festival of Trees, which is an annual Christmas tree decoration event, followed by a visit from Santa, who greets the children and sings Christmas carols for them.

Psychedelic groove circus, Glass Pony, is set to perform at Albany’s The Palace Theatre on June 7 as part of the Palace Sessions.
The Albany native band focuses on danceable music with influences from the 60’s and 70’s and incorporates a jam band style of performance. In 2019 they released their first self titled album and their most recent 2023 album is titled Washed Away. The band is made up of Chanda Dewey (drums), Eddie Hotaling (guitar, lead vocals), Jeff Picarazzi (bass), and Greg Pittz (lead guitar).
Although it was built in 1931, The Palace Performing Arts Centers was established as a not-for-profit corporation in 1984 and since then, has hosted a variety of talent including The Rolling Stones, Jerry Seinfled and Tony Bennet. The theater was always used to entertain the Albany community as it was first used as a cinema for the “talkies.”
The Palace sessions are a series of recorded and filmed live performances. The sessions were created with the help of the city of Albany and Mirth Films in 2020. The goal was to bring live music, via YouTube, to a quarantined audience. Glass Pony’s Palace Sessions set is free to all and you can reserve tickets here.
Albany’s show was originally set for September 19 of last year, but because of some health complications, Bruce Springsteen elected to postpone many of his September tour dates. This was his second postponement of the tour. They not only said they were going to make up those dates, but also announced in October, a European leg of the tour.
The show started promptly at 7:30pm with no opener. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band took the stage to a roaring crowd of approximately 17,000 people. He interacted well with the crowd, using many hand gestures to get everyone amped up. Unlike many artists today, Springsteen also had fans sit behind the stage and took time out to perform to them too.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band tour continues in Syracuse on April 18. If you can’t catch Springsteen live this time around, he also recently released a live album, Songs of Celebration, that is available on all streaming platforms.

The City of Albany is hosting the 76th Annual Albany Tulip Festival presented by KeyBank on Saturday, May 11, and Sunday, May 12 in Washington Park.
The Albany Tulip Festival is Albany’s signature spring event, featuring nearly one hundred artisans selling their handmade crafts, a fine arts show, delicious food trucks, the KidZone family fun destination, three world-class live entertainment stages, a brand new wellness stage with free dance classes, Yogafest, and more than 100,000 tulips can be admired in the historic Washington Park. The festival will bring many genres from across the state and beyond performing on multiple stages for the many people that attend.
Since Mayor Erastus Corning II read the first Tulip Festival Proclamation on May 14, 1949, the Mother’s Day weekend celebration has become one of the Northeast’s biggest and most beloved yearly events. Featuring area vendors, businesses, community organizations, and original local artists on every stage the Tulip Festival honors Albany’s four centuries of history while looking ahead to its future. 1:30 p.m. –OF THE ATLAS: Catskill NY-based songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist Jay Woodruff has led the alternative rock band Of The Atlas through a range of styles and incarnations. Initially, it was a solo act by the enthusiastic and longtime member of the thriving and diverse regional underground rock community, Woodruff fleshed the group out into a powerful blend of introspective indie, vibrant art rock, and infectious power pop. Now joined by Ethan Klee and Kenny Rowe.
3:00 p.m. –PRINCE DADDY & THE HYENA: Prince Daddy & the Hyena is an American punk rock band from Albany formed in 2014. They have released three full-length albums and four extended plays.
4:30 p.m. –THE FRONT BOTTOMS: When you turn on a record from The Front Bottoms, you hear the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of two lifelong friends who stare down personal tragedy and the madness of a world gone haywire by simply playing a little louder together. The New Jersey natives went from playing in the woods to performing in high school bands. After the lead singer finished college, The Front Bottoms officially formed – creating their 2011 self-titled independent debut.
A whirlwind of prolific output and countless gigs followed. The Front Bottoms reached a critical peak with 2017’s Going Grey. It received praise from The FADER, Stereogum, VICE, A.V. Club, and more. Along the way, the band performed on Late Night with Seth Meyers and NPR’s “Tiny Desk,” graced the stages of Coachella, Austin City Limits, and Bonnaroo, and toured with the likes of Blink-182, Manchester Orchestra, tallied nearly 100 million streams, sold over 500,000 album equivalents, and launched the annual holiday festival Champagne Jam, which expands year over year at an unprecedented rate.

1:00 p.m. – SIDE B: Four-piece alternative rock band from Upstate New York consisting of drummer Dylan Travison, bassist Eric Mitchell, guitarist AJ Horton, and vocalist Ian Justino. Their debut release The Low Budget Romance EP is out now.
2:15 p.m. – SOFIA CORTS: “Sofia Corts is an 18-year-old singer-songwriter from the Albany area on the cusp of a national breakout. Self-taught on guitar and keyboards, her songwriting effortlessly blends genres, pop, R&B, and a hint of jazz, while generating infectious, memorable melodic hooks.
3:30p.m – CAMTRON5000: Camtron5000, a rapper from Albany, has been creating alternative hip-hop music since 2016. He hopes to break the stereotypes of what it means to be a rapper. Channeling a dynamic yet playful energy with his skilled lyricism, and sporting a logo crafted from his gapped smile, Camtron5000 is a musical personality unlike any other.
4:45 p.m. – THE INSOLENT WILLIES: The Insolent Willies is an upstate New York-based roots-rock band known for their hip-shaking mix of quirky, clever original songs and unpredictable interpretations of tunes from all over the musical map. The band consists of Bill Ackerbauer (acoustic guitar, harmonica, mandolin, vocals), Frank DeVer Pullen (bass, banjo, vocals), Paul Gavry (accordion, fiddle, vocals) and Evan Gavry (guitars, percussion, vocals).

1:00 p.m. – OFF THE RECORD: Off The Record Trio is the Capital District’s only 1960’s rock and roll lounge band. Awarded an “Eddie” for Best Capital District Party Cover Band two years in a row, the trio plays 60’s vintage tunes and some hidden nuggets with a modern twist. It is led by the dynamic and engaging Joanna Palladino on vocals with local favorite Geo on guitar/vocals along with Bob Resnick splashing rock and roll rhythms on a minimalist drum set.
2:30 p.m. –FUNK EVOLUTION : Formed in 2010, Funk Evolution has been bringing top-shelf entertainment to the Northeast for 14 years and features a who’s who of musicians from New York and Massachusetts. 1:00 p.m. –GIRL LOVE: Girl Love is the Albany-based, folk project of award-winning poet and songwriter, Laura Beth Johnson. She is known for her dark blend of story and soul – awarded the Lucy Monro Brooker Poetry Prize from the University of Indianapolis in 2017. In 2019, she received the Songwriting Scholarship by Image Magazine and a Poetry Scholarship from the Hudson Valley Writers Guild in 2022. In 2023, Girl Love was nominated for two Eddies.
2:15 p.m. –THE E-BLOCK:The E-Block is a five-piece indie R&B band based in Upstate New York, blending the acoustic warmth of singer-songwriter music with an ice-cold rhythm section informed by modern R&B.
3:30 p.m. –REESE FULMER & THE CARRIAGE HOUSE BAND: “Reese Fulmer & The Carriage House Band challenge the traditional relationship of a songwriter and his band, with a fluidly rotating cast of top-notch players and a flair for experimentation that combine for a unique and mesmerizing live performance. Add to that a keen lyricism that explores the human experience with a patient and poetic touch.
4:45 p.m. –OOBLECK: Oobleck, founded in 2008, is an original, analog funk band out of the Capital Region. Known regionally for inciting dance parties wherever they land, they boast a big, in-your-face sound inspired by New Orleans street music. It’s a melee of horns, super heavy drums and bass, and your favorite type of chunky guitar riffing that leaves your bum shaking and your face grinning.
Albany Symphony announced the anticipated return of Peter and the Wolf: Tiny Tots concert for three shows this spring. The shows will take place on April 30 and May 1 in Albany and May 2 in Saratoga Springs.

The Albany Symphony Tiny Tots concerts are geared for children between the ages of 18-months and 7 years. Tiny Tots concerts are interactive school day performances that have thrilled preschool audiences, teachers, and parents, presented by the orchestra for over 30 years.
David Alan Miller and the Albany Symphony plan to take you and your children on a wonderfully interactive, magical adventure. Peter and the Wolf is a classic symphonic fairy tale for children by Sergei Prokofiev. The story will be personified through music for children and adults alike to enjoy. In addition, you and your children will meet and get to hear all the instruments of the orchestra and the amazing musicians who play them.

Albany Symphony is renowned for performances featuring classic orchestral favorites, lesser-heard masterworks, and a diverse array of new music. The symphony strives to present the community with virtuosic talents and homages to all-time classics.
The Albany Symphony Tiny Tots concert is a prime example of the level of community the organization possesses. The April 30 and May 1 shows are held at Congregation Beth Emeth in Albany. The May 2 performance of Peter and the Wolf takes place at the SPAC School of Arts in Saratoga.
