  • Dogs In A Pile Announce 4-Night New Years Run in Saratoga Springs

    Dogs In A Pile have announced a four-day run at Saratoga Springs’ Putnam Place from December 28-31 to ring in the New Year. These shows come in the aftermath of the band’s cross-country fall 2024 tour.

    Dogs In A Pile began in Asbury Park, at the heart of the Jersey Shore. Guitarist Jimmy Law and drummer Joe Babick teamed up with Berklee graduates Sam Lucid (bass), Jeremy Kaplan (keyboard), and Brian Murray (guitar). Together, the quintet has made a name for itself for their eclectic mix of funk, rock, and psychedelia. With live shows that build improvised psychedelic soundscapes, the band has amassed a large cult following, known as the Dog Pound. 

    2024 marks a monumental year for Dogs In A Pile. Throughout the Summer, the quintet has headlined multiple shows and concerts in Colorado, and toured with Andy Frasco & The U.N. and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. Following up these shows, the band announced a cross-country fall tour. The tour begins on October 25th in Philadelphia, before looping around the country for a November 22nd show in Atlanta. 

    To cap off this busy year of touring, Dogs In A Pile will play four nights at Putnam Place in Saratoga Springs. Located in Downtown Saratoga Springs, the 400+ person venue is a staple of Upstate New York tours. Over the years, the venue has hosted everyone from Ghostface Killah to Blues Traveler. Among Putnam Place’s many shows was a NYE 2023 show by Dogs In A Pile. The show was a display of the band’s musical ability, debuting four new songs, and playing a number of improvised psychedelic jams.

    Now, Dogs In A Pile will return to Putnam Place from December 28th to 31st. These shows will put their improvisational prowess to the test, and offer audiences the chance to see original tunes and fresh takes on loved covers. Ticket presale begins on Wednesday, August 14th at 12pm ET. General public sale will follow on Friday, August 16th at 12pm ET.   • Hearing Aide: Tyler Adams Organ Trio “The Color Red Sessions”

    Jam band extraordinaires, Tyler Adams Organ Trio, released their new jazz-funk E.P. The Color Red Sessions on August 9. Comprised of Tyler Adams and Caton Sollenberger of The Jauntee and Will Trask of The High Hawks, the trio effectively brings different experiences to this new collection of music.

    The ensemble is a part of Color Red Music, out of Denver, CO. Tyler Adams is the keyboardist for the Boston-based band The Jauntee, along with trio member, guitarist, Caton Sollenberger. After years of experience in the east coast jam-band scene, they’re entering a different musical sphere out west. Similarly, drummer, Will Trask, also has extensive band experience with multiple collectives, notably The High Hawks.

    This E.P. marks the debut of the Tyler Adams Organ Trio. Made up of individually established musicians, the trio’s first product showcases musical depth and well-versed collaboration. Produced by Tyler Adams, the collection was evidently created with much care and attention to detail throughout an extremely hands-on experience.

    The Color Red Sessions, which features the prominent Hammond B3 organ, exemplifies the sound of many other musicians under Color Red Music. The refreshing layers of organ, guitar, and percussion instrumentation create a syncopated dynamic. The energy presented across all five tracks emulates that of a relaxed jam session. Hence the record’s title, it subsequently brings the recording atmosphere to life through the songs.

    Though lyricless, each song presents it’s own character. The musicians simultaneously convey the song’s individual messages through their respective roles. The drums and guitar create melodic accents as they follow the organ’s lead producing, positive, high-energy songs, that also hold a relaxing beat. Overall, Adams, Sollenberger, and Trask produced a body of groovy, experimental music that creatively tells a story.

  • Robert DeLong Headlines 15th Annual PearlPalooza

    Heading to Albany on September 21 is the 15th rendition of PearlPalooza, Albany’s highly anticipated annual music festival. From 12:00 pm until 7:00 pm, PearlPalooza presents 30 local vendors, activities, and musical performances. Headlining the music acts is indie artist Robert DeLong, accompanied by Jakob Nowell, The Ramona Flowers, Laveda, and the Sugar Hold.

    Before the festival officially begins, MVP Healthcare presents YogaPalooza, a free city-wide yoga class that is available to all.  A group of instructors from The Hot Yoga Spot will instruct and assist this free 60-minute yoga class, compatible with all levels. Those who wish to participate can register using this link.

    Following YogaPalooza are the incredibly diverse all-ages musical acts, presented by  102.7 FM WEQX, the Downtown Albany Business Improvement District (BID), and Sugar Productions. The official craft beer sponsors of the event, Indian Ladder Farms Cidery & Brewery, and Brown’s Brewing Company, are just one of the many local businesses providing their goods to guests of the festival.

  • Posthumous Solo Debut by James Casey to Release on August 28 One Year After His Passing

    Beloved R&B and soul saxophonist musician James Casey will posthumously release his debut album, The Kauai Project, on Wednesday, August 28. The album’s release will come one year after he passed away from colon cancer at age 40.

    Although James Casey only recently emerged on New York City’s R&B and soul scene, he has been making waves in the music industry for years. From touring with classic funk band Lettuce to joining Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio’s solo band to sharing the stage with legends like The Roots, Chaka Khan, J. Cole, Wu-Tang and Dave Matthews Band, Casey has accomplished more than most musicians could ever hope. This makes it all the more surprising that Casey had never released music under his own name until the 2020s.

    Casey’s attitude towards his musical legacy abruptly shifted gears, though, when he was diagnosed with Stage III colorectal cancer at just 38 years of age in August 2021, which served as an awakening in so many ways. Deciding to make the most of his time, both for himself and for others, Casey let go of all limits to his musical career and, for the first time, prioritized his own musical legacy.

    The seeds of his debut, The Kauai Project, were planted while he lived on the Hawaiian island of Kauai for nearly two years. While working on a COVID-era side project, Casey produced tracks with acapella samples to promote his and fellow musicians’ virtual live stream events. The resulting catalog of beats became the foundation and inspiration for his solo debut. Alongside Casey’s announcement of his plans for The Kauai Project, he released his first single, “New Bloom,” in March 2023.

    In turn, Casey produced a mini-documentary to highlight his journey of stepping out as a solo artist in parallel to the stark reality of his terminal diagnosis. He aimed to transform his difficult reality into a call to action for others to avoid his fate—to be their own health advocate, get colonoscopies, and know your family history of cancer. “The thing about colon cancer is it is preventable if you catch it early enough,” Casey told the Today Show in March 2023, sharing how the lyrics for “New Bloom” were his mantra for positivity in the face of any circumstance. “If I’ve got today then that’s enough, I can do something with this time.”

    Entrusting the EP’s final act to his close musical family, the last single from The Kauai Project, “This Place (pars Animus)”, will release on August 28. The song is a tribute to his band Animus Rexx, an explosive fusion project established with musicians Randy Runyon, Reuben Cainer, BIGYUKI, and Justin Tyson. Runyon and Cainer provided the song’s finishing touches, while his wife, Ayla Casey, laid the groundwork to carry his mission and debut EP forward.

    “I am beyond grateful to help honor James’ life with the culmination of a project that meant so much to him,” said Ayla Casey. “James did not want his absence to weigh on us – please join me in celebrating the love and joy his music continues to cultivate.”

    Following his passing, Casey’s family and friends hosted a sold-out memorial party at the Brooklyn Bowl in November 2023, which featured performances by Trey Anastasio, Louis Cato, Nikki Glaspie, Jennifer Hartswick, Brady Watt, and dozens of other musicians that shared the stage with James throughout his career. The benefit concert raised more than $32,000 to support cancer charities hand-picked by Casey for their work in the community.

  • Brew York Festival Returns With Headliners Mike Powell & The Echo Sound, The Rollin’ Rust And More

    Brew York Festival has announced it will return to Madison Barracks Polo Fields in Sackets Harbor on August 24 with a wide variety of music, entertainments and activities. 

    Brew York is an all-ages event (kids under 12 free) and features two stages of live music, as well as beer, wine, & whiskey vendors, free tastings, food trucks, cornhole tournament, kids zone, and select craft/artisan vendors. The festival will return this summer and will continue to showcase different local, regional, and national acts.

    Headlining this year’s festival is Mike Powell & The Echo Sound, a five-head rock band from Syracuse formed in 2020.  After forming in 2020, the band played all of 2021 under the name Wade, before later changing it to Mike Powell & The Echo Sound. In 2023, the band released their debut album, Plastic Spoon Honeymoon, which was recorded in Utica. 

    Also, headlining is Annie In The Water, a Indie rock band rooted in limitless acoustic guitars. Over time, listeners can experience rock, funk, reggae, hip hop, soul, dancebeat, and jam with enjoyable melodies driven by guitars and synthesizers over a ground-shaking rhythm section thanks to their songwriting and versatility. Comprised of members Brad Hester on lead vocals and rhythm,, Michael Lashomb on lead guitar and vocals, Josh West on drums and vocals, Chris Meier on bass and vocals, Matt Richards on keys and vocals, and Brock Kuca on percussion and vocals, each of their performance is and exhilarating and everlasting adventure.

  • The Bangles’ Vicki Peterson and John Cowsill from The Beach Boys Bring a Heartfelt Tribute to the LIMEHOF

    Vicki Peterson, known for her role as the lead guitarist and vocalist of the iconic all-female rock band The Bangles, joined her husband, John Cowsill, drummer and vocalist for The Beach Boys, for a memorable performance at the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame. Additionally, the duo’s show marked a poignant tribute to John’s late brothers, Bill and Barry Cowsill, with a selection of songs from their upcoming album, Long After the Fire. The project, which features songs written by Bill and Barry Cowsill, is set for release in early 2025.

    Vicki Peterson: From Bangles to New Beginnings

    Vicki Peterson’s journey in the music industry began with The Bangles in the early 1980s. Formed in Los Angeles, the band became one of the most successful female-led rock groups of the decade. Moreover, with hits like “Manic Monday,” “Walk Like an Egyptian,” and “Eternal Flame,” The Bangles carved out a significant place in the annals of pop and rock music. Peterson’s intricate guitar work and harmonious vocals were key elements in the band’s distinctive sound, which blended 1960s garage rock with the melodic sensibilities of the 1980s.

    Following the band’s initial disbandment in 1989, Peterson pursued various musical projects, including working with the Continental Drifters and releasing solo material. However, the Bangles reunited in 1999, continuing to perform and record, allowing Peterson to revisit and expand upon the band’s musical legacy. Her collaboration with John Cowsill on Long After the Fire represents a new chapter in her career, blending her musical past with new inspirations and partnerships.

    John Cowsill: Carrying the Legacy of The Beach Boys and The Cowsills

    John Cowsill’s musical roots run deep. As a member of The Cowsills, a family band that rose to fame in the late 1960s, John was part of hits like “The Rain, The Park & Other Things” and “Hair.” Similarly. the Cowsills’ music was characterized by rich vocal harmonies and a pop sensibility that mirrored the era’s optimistic sound. In 2000, John joined The Beach Boys as their drummer and vocalist, a role he has embraced for the past 23 years. In addition, his dynamic performances have helped sustain the band’s legendary status in the music world.

    A Heartfelt Tribute and Personal Insights

    After their performance, I had the opportunity to speak with both Vicki Peterson and John Cowsill. Peterson shared insights into the couple’s evolving musical chemistry, noting that each night of their collaboration feels fresh and enjoyable. Her favorite track from their new project is a soulful song she sings, along with a timeless piece written by Barry Cowsill. She also highlighted the significant contributions of Paul Allen, a multi-instrumentalist from Nashville, who played various instruments and produced the album.

    In my conversation with John Cowsill, he introduced their new project, Long After the Fire, a labor of love that has been in the works for the past few years. The project faced delays due to John’s commitments with The Beach Boys and Vicki’s touring schedule. Much of the recording took place at their home studio allowing the couple to work closely and intimately on the music.

    John discussed the challenges they faced in navigating the modern music industry, such as understanding ISWC codes, ISNI numbers, and metadata management. He expressed concern that without these codes, they risk losing revenue from their music. The complexities of securing consistent publishing were also a hurdle, as companies can be bought or absorbed, changing the original agreements.

    Looking Forward

    As Vicki Peterson and John Cowsill prepare to release Long After the Fire in early 2025, their performance at the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame offered a glimpse into a project that honors the legacy of John’s late brothers while showcasing the couple’s unique musical bond. Furthermore, their dedication to preserving the music of Bill and Barry Cowsill, combined with their passion for creating new sounds, promises to make this album a standout addition to their respective careers.

  • TV Doctors: Albany’s Genre-Bending Instrumental Rock Trio With A Unique Twist

    Hailing from Amsterdam, New York, three-piece genre-bending instrumental band, TV Doctors, is a group on the rise. Hot off the heels of their most recent live album earlier this year, TV Doctors continue to make their mark with their unique and intoxicating sound. The upstate trio’s passion for their craft has led them on a mission to play some of the most unpredictable and entertaining live shows in the region.

    Who Are TV Doctors?

    Comprised of Evan Conway, Bob Morris, and Josh Witmer, TV Doctors was informally created just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. After Witmer reached out to Morris, whom he had previously been in a band with to ask about the possibility of forming a new band, Morris agreed and also recommended his bass-playing friend, Conway, as another addition. With that, the trio of TV Doctors was formed. The three only initially jammed for fun, but that all changed once the pandemic went into full swing. With all of them having nothing else to do, Conway cleaned out his garage, and the three played together in opposite corners at every opportunity they got. The name of TV Doctors came about from Morris, who kept on seeing celebrities like Doctor Phil and Doctor Oz whenever he would turn on the TV and thought it would be an entertaining theme to roll with.

    Once Conway, Morris and Witmer learned to play as a unit, everything else for fell into place for TV Doctors. “It was like zero effort. Playing together was just a fun thing to do every week, and then it kind of took off,” Witmer said. In fact, one of the only dilemmas any of them had about the band was how to describe the music they make. On their website, they categorize themselves as a mix of psychedelic rock, funk, soul, dub, beats, and noise, but the walls between genres often blur, making a truly one-of-a-kind sound. With the trio’s list of musical inspirations including Frank Zappa, King Crimson, Brian Eno, James Brown, J Dilla and the Wu-Tang Clan, TV Doctors’ refusal to conform to one genre only makes sense.

    Music and Performance Styles

    Although TV Doctors have a laundry list of styles they dabble in, the most unique aspect of their performances is completely unrelated. All TV Doctors shows are a mixture of pre-planned and improvised songs, making no two shows alike—one of the many reasons that seeing them live once is not enough. During live shows, the band will play something that they have practiced before, but if one of them gets a fun idea of where to take the track, they will do so, and the rest will go along.

    “It’s like a launch pad for ADHD,” Conway noted. While playing for keen-eared crowds improvisationally may sound like a stressful situation, the doctors take the challenge in stride. “I have absolutely no nerves going into a show with this band,” said Conway. “It’s kind of like a Ouija board, actually. We’re one brain now. Eventually, we’re going to get the message out.”

    As the pandemic slowly subsided in 2022 and 2023, TV Doctors began playing more and more live shows. In March of 2022, the trio released their first live project: recordings from a set they had at Rare Form Brewery in Troy. Since then, the band has put out three more live albums, with the most recent being Live at Wolf Hollow Brewing Co., which was released this past February.

    An Improved TV Doctors

    As a result of the experience TV Doctors have racked up through practices and public shows, they have gotten more and more comfortable handling their on-the-fly live decision-making skills. “I think that we’re getting to a spot where we can play back and forth. Those moments where things explode and get crazy are super fun, but they’re a little bit more strategic than they used to be,” Witmer said. Conway then added, “We’re also spending more time actually writing the songs. Sometimes we’ll play through something [in practice] and be like, ‘No, that kind of sucks. Let’s drop that. Let’s try this other thing the next time around.’”

    TV Doctors are almost always working on something new, and now is no different. Conway and Witmer noted that one of their goals for the near future is to make a short video package that coincides with an album release. Knowing the band’s creativity and consistency, whatever their next project turns out to be is guaranteed to be equally fun and mind-bending.

  • Wale Announces ‘Every Blue Moon Tour’ With New York Show Announced

    Rap artist Wale just announced the “Every Blue Moon Tour” in celebration his upcoming album and the 15th anniversary of his debut album.

    The live nations tour will stop at Irving Plaza in New York on Oct. 5. The Blue Moon tour is a 32 city journey starting in Fort Lauderdale on Sept. 19 and ending in Birmingham, Alabama on Nov. 7. 

    About Wale

    Wale was born in Washington D.C. to Nigerian parents. After graduating high school, he studied at Bowie State University but dropped out to pursue his rap career. He dropped his first single “Dig Dug” in 2006 and his first album in 2008. A Mixtape About Nothing put him on the Hip Hop map. His legendary 12 albums continued to establish the new rapper on the scene. Currently Wale is one of the most accomplished hip hop artists from the DMV area.

    In 2023, he signed a new deal with Def Jam records and was featured on Odumodublvck’s “Blood On The Dance Floor.” He celebrated the 10th anniversary of his album Gifted with a performance at the Kennedy Center. His 8th album is yet to be announced but is set to be performed on this upcoming tour.

  • State Champs Prepare for Nationwide Tour, One Stop in New York

    Albany-born and bred punk band State Champs gear up for a nationwide tour this fall, starting on November 8 in Austin, Texas. Joining them are supporting acts Knuckle Puck, Meet Me at The Altar, and Daisy Grenade.

    State Champs will end their tour in their home state, closing the tour at Manhattan’s Webster Hall on December 7.

    For the last decade, State Champs have become a household name in the world of pop-punk. The band is comprised of singer Derek DiScanio, guitarist Tyler Szalkowski, bassist Ryan Scott Graham, and drummer Evan Ambrosio. Starting with the release of their debut album, The Finer Things, State Champs have been gathering fans of all generations to enjoy

    Together, they have played at numerous festivals, including Alive at 5 and Frozen Fire. They have written alongside some of the genre’s biggest names, including Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 and Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low.

    Over the years, State Champs received massive critical acclaim. From Kerrang!, to Upset, Alternative Press, and Rock Sound, they have been met with astounding support from fans and rock critics alike. In 2018, after the release of their third album, Living Proof, Billboard dubbed them “modern-day pop-punk torchbearers.”

    Live performances with State Champs are nothing if not passionate and energetic, this tour being no exception. They always focus on keeping their energy and giving the crowd something they will never forget. Authenticity is the priority, exemplified by Evan Ambrosio’s statements in a past interview: “We focus on life as we experience it, not an event we didn’t have a part in. We write about things that stay true to what we experience, and not try to jump on a trend of ultimate sadness or TikTok videos, so we can maintain authenticity and stay true to what the band has built up.”

  • Primus, Coheed and Cambria & Puddles Pity Party shut down Terminal B in Standout Show

    Buffalo Outer Harbor, Terminal B hosted legendary Primus, Coheed and Cambria with special guest Puddles Pity Party on August 9, 2024.

    Puddles Pity Party, the melancholy clown songster from America’s Got Talent, lured the crowd in with their deep golden voice and creative renditions of classics ranging from “My Heart Will Go On” to “Stairway to Heaven” with borrowed words from other famous songs like the Gilligan Island’s theme Song. Puddles’ interactions with the crowd were as much a part of the show as the music itself and the crowd enjoyed piecing together lyrics as Puddles sang several familiar tunes. As a result his memorable performance rocked the Terminal B crowd and set the stage for Coheed and Cambria.

    Coheed and Cambria began the show with their hit song “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3” which brought a different kind of intensity to the evening than Puddles Pity Party could offer. The band’s ability to create an emotional connection with their audience was next level, and fans passionately joined in on tracks like “A Favor House Atlantic” and “The Crowing” their voices rising in unison with the music creating a cathartic concert going experience. They closed with “Welcome Home” which seemed appropriate as they mentioned during the set that Buffalo has felt like home for the band throughout their years of touring and being hosted at people’s Buffalo homes throughout the years.

    Les Claypool interacted with the audience to perform their hit and rare song at the encore, and they played “Jellikit” as the fans requested. Primus said goodbye with “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver”, leaving the audience in awe, although Primus didn’t promise to come back to Buffalo as portion of the audience repeatedly chanted “Primus Sucks.”
