  • Geneva Jazz Festival Returns April 4-7

    The second annual Geneva Jazz Festival returns April 4-7, featuring 20 performances at nine venues over four days.

    The Geneva Jazz Festival is held in Geneva, known for innovation and forward-thinking businesses. It is the gateway to the Finger Lakes, providing access to historical landmarks, natural beauties, wineries, breweries, food, shopping, and more.

    The festival honors the late Scott LaFaro, who grew up in Geneva. At 18, he started learning to play the double bass. In 1961 he was killed in a car accident at age 25. He became the most influential jazz bassist ever after his performance with Stan Getz at the Newport Jazz Festival and subsequent recordings with the Bill Evans Trio, which still impacts jazz today.

    The nine headline concerts are hosted at the historic Club 86, featuring a high-fidelity sound system by George’s Pro Audio for an immersive jazz experience. These performances represent some of the finest jazz musicians working and creating in New York State. Evening concerts on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday – plus matinee shows on Saturday and Sunday.

    On the opening night on April 4, the festival celebrates women in jazz at the historic Club 86. Trombonist and vocalist Melissa Gardiner brings her organ trio MG3 (8 PM), with singer Vanessa Vacanti & Jazz Mafia (6 PM) and saxophonist Ellen Pieroni & Encyclopedia of Soul (4 PM) performing. There also is a free concert at Ventosa Vineyards with Annie Wells Trio featuring Mike Kaupa (5 PM) and the free FLIMA Open Jazz Jam at 10 p.m.

    On Friday, April 5, The Ryan Johnson Project performs at 2 p.m. It has become a known name in the music industry, featuring informed, professional, outgoing attitudes, and beautifully written pieces of music that have caught the ears of many worldwide. Ryan and his group have played with, opened for, and collaborated with artists such as Cabo Frio, Chuck Mangione, Maynard Ferguson, Soulive, Sharon Jones, Gary Clark Jr., and Robert Randolph.

    At 4:30 p.m., The Mellow Warblers perform playful renditions of jazz standards and deviations – setting the perfect mood with an ever-mellow attitude. At 5, The Craig Snyder Trio plays a wide variety of jazz-rock material steeped in groove, ensemble unity, and melodic soloing. The Rochester band is fronted by veteran guitarist, teacher, and composer Craig S Snyder. Others include Tony Hiler + Giancarlo, A Tribute to Sam Venuti, Mike Melito Quartet, and the free FLIMA Open Jazz Jam.

    On Saturday, April 6, the Greg Lofaro Quartet begins the day at 1 p.m., with the Mike Titlebaum Quartet preceding. Mike directs the jazz studies program at the Ithaca College School of Music, teaching jazz saxophone, arranging, improvisation, and theory. Before teaching, he lived in New York City where he played at the Blue Note, Smalls, Augies, Fez/Time Café, and the legendary CBGB’s. He has performed with dozens of internationally recognized artists and groups including John Hollenbeck, Gary Versace, Branford Marsalis, Jason Robert Brown, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra, and more.

    At 3 p.m., the Banjo Juice Jazz band performs an eclectic blend of vintage blues, jazz, and swing. Founded by bandleader, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Tyler Westcott in 2017, the group features musicians from many notable bands. At 4:30, the Swordfish Trio brings a soulful, blues-infused, and high-energy improv experience that takes you on a journey from tight riffs and funky Afrobeat grooves to soulful jazz and subtle bass virtuosity.

    At 8, the Bill Tiberio Sextet performs. In his 40th year as a music educator, he has been a band director at Fairport (NY) High School for 36 years, directing two concert bands and three jazz ensembles, and is also an adjunct faculty member at the Eastman Community Music School – directing the Educator Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble and a high school wind ensemble camp. He is an active saxophonist and clarinetist in the Rochester music scene and has recorded four albums with his contemporary jazz quintet, the Bill Tiberio Band. 

    The final day begins early at 11 a.m. with the Evan Dobbins Quartet feat. Bill Dobbins. At noon, the Dave Solazzo Duo plays modern interpretations of jazz standards and original compositions in the spirit of Oscar Peterson, Keith Jarrett, and Brad Mehldau. Dave Solazzo has been a mainstay of Central New York’s music scene for over two decades, working with artists from a wide mix of genres – jazz, fusion, R&B, and beyond.

    At 2 p.m., Dennis Winge + John Viavattine perform, with the Nancy Kelly Quartet following. Over her 40-plus-year career, Nancy Kelly has perfected her signature swing/bop take in front of audiences all over the U.S.A. and abroad. She performs regularly in New York City, including at The Blue Note and Birdland, The Rainbow Room, and Dizzy’s Jazz Club, Lincoln Center. Finally, at 6 p.m., The Pickle Mafia, a dynamic trio from New York, performs their unique brand of Arena Jazz Fusion. The visual appeal the band brings to audiences across the globe is an important element that adds to their musical artistry.

  • Albany Symphony Announces Return of Peter and the Wolf: Tiny Tots Concert this Spring

    Albany Symphony announced the anticipated return of Peter and the Wolf: Tiny Tots concert for three shows this spring. The shows will take place on April 30 and May 1 in Albany and May 2 in Saratoga Springs.

    The Albany Symphony Tiny Tots concerts are geared for children between the ages of 18-months and 7 years. Tiny Tots concerts are interactive school day performances that have thrilled preschool audiences, teachers, and parents, presented by the orchestra for over 30 years.

    David Alan Miller and the Albany Symphony plan to take you and your children on a wonderfully interactive, magical adventure. Peter and the Wolf is a classic symphonic fairy tale for children by Sergei Prokofiev. The story will be personified through music for children and adults alike to enjoy. In addition, you and your children will meet and get to hear all the instruments of the orchestra and the amazing musicians who play them.

    Albany Symphony is renowned for performances featuring classic orchestral favorites, lesser-heard masterworks, and a diverse array of new music. The symphony strives to present the community with virtuosic talents and homages to all-time classics.

    The Albany Symphony Tiny Tots concert is a prime example of the level of community the organization possesses. The April 30 and May 1 shows are held at Congregation Beth Emeth in Albany. The May 2 performance of Peter and the Wolf takes place at the SPAC School of Arts in Saratoga.

  • In Focus: Mong Tong at No Fun in Troy

    Tuesday nights are usually reserved for a simple McDonalds dinner after I sit through an hour of my daughter’s gymnastics class. This past Tuesday I decided to add the Mong Tong show at No Fun in Troy to the lineup of Tuesday’s to-do list. This turned out to be a welcome addition as I watched 2 men get on the stage, do a quick sound check, and then blindfold themselves before performing a very unique brand of Asian-infused Psychedelic sound.

    Mong Tong is a 2 man instrumental group consisting of Taiwanese brothers Hom Yu and Jim Chi and are no strangers to the United States. They’ve performed multiple times in the South By Southwest festivals and have gathered a decent following. This particular appearance at NoFun is the 7th stop of their 9 location US tour with their 9th and final stop being at TV Eye in New York City on March 29th. This tour celebrates their new EP 銘 Epigraphy which dropped on March 8th.

    Blindfolded musicians performing music is something everyone should see at least once in their lives. Dressed simply in black pants, white shirts, and red blindfolds, and using an arsenal of electric and electronic gear, the 2 brothers create intricate and complex arrangements that capture the essence of kung-fu movies mixed with punchy beats and well thought out melodies. Staccato guitar arpeggios dance over conga laden drum lines. Traditional Asian instruments and unidentifiable synth sounds mash together in a strange 70s Psychedelic rock jam. All accentuated by the smooth and groovy bass that anyone could get next to.

    The duo takes you on a trip though soundscapes that vary from ethereal to hectic to confusing to serene and you’re not sure where its going next. The energy is positive and contagious and while some people are dancing, others are taking in the light show, and others are still amazed at the blindfolded-ness of it all, none are missing out on this one-of-a-kind experience.

    With polyrhythmic beats and sampled and non-sampled traditional Chinese instruments it’s safe to say that Mong Tong has few competitors. Since I’m struggling to find a similar band to compare them to I’ll just say I’d classify Mong Tong as Psychedelic Asian Electro-Funk Trip-Hop with a dash of Techno. They’re continuing their tour of the US with shows at the Columbus Theater in Providence, RI on March 28th and at TV Eve in New York City on March 29th. Tuesday to-do lists aren’t the same any more.

  • Michael Franti and Spearhead Announce Togetherness Tour Feat. Stephen Marley and Trevor Hall

    Michael Franti and Spearhead have announced they will be touring throughout the US beginning this April. The tour will see three dates in New York – Hutton Brickyards Event Center in Kingston, Beak and Skiff Apple Orchards in Lafayette, and Pier 17+ in New York City.

    The tour’s name, Togetherness, was birthed from Michael Franti’s idea that folks are simply not close enough to each other. Franti believes that we should connect with one another more often and feel that powerful togetherness.

    Michael Franti and Spearhead will perform their funk, reggae, and jazz hits from April 6 through August 25. The tour will also include musical support from huge reggae artists like Stephen Marley and Trevor Hall. The show will consist of high-energy, uplifting and inspirational music for the spirit.

    The tour will kick off April 6 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and wrap up in Santa Cruz, California. The tour will stop three times in New York – Kingston on June 20, Lafayette on June 22, and Pier 17+ on July 12. Franti and Spearhead’s music is all about the spreading of love and togetherness, which is the theme of this tour.

    Pre-sales will begin February 7 at noon local time and general on-sale will begin Friday, February 9 at 10 a.m. local time at MichaelFranti.com. Newly added dates go on sale March 29 at 10 a.m. local time.

  • Glass Pony to Celebrate Bassist Jeff Picarazzi’s 30th Birthday with show at Ophelia’s on Broadway

    Albany’s Glass Pony will celebrate beloved bassist Jeff ‘J-Dog’ Picarazzi’s 30th birthday on Friday, April 5 at Ophelia’s On Broadway (formerly Parish Public House), as the band’s first show under the new branding.

    The Albany group is currently recording a 4-song EP at White Lake Studios, where the group previously recorded Washed Away with Brett Portzer (Skinless) engineer. A vinyl edition of Washed Away will be dropping in April, limited to 100 copies, and mastered by Justin Perkins of Mystery Room Mastering

    Recently, Glass Pony released Best in Show – Live 2023 on Tuesday, March 26, featuring multitrack audio from various 2023 shows. Listen and download the album on Bandcamp.

    Next up for Glass Pony after the Ophelia’s show is a performance on Monday April 8 at Adirondack Eclipse Experience in Blue Mountain Lake (sold out), followed by a show on April 11 at Al’s Wine & Whiskey in Syracuse.

  • HUNNY Brings the Garage to Albany

    On Wednesday March 20, California-based HUNNY took the stage at Empire Live in Albany, supporting Mom Jeans alongside Summer Salt. With a dynamic setlist pulling from the band’s near-decade long discography as well as their most recent album, new planet heaven, HUNNY put on a show that exemplified their long-standing and ever-growing presence in the alternative scene. 

    HUNNY hails from Northern California, a product of the indie rock scene that flourished in the area in the 2010s. They are the first of two bands supporting fellow California-based Mom Jeans on their US tour; several other bands, including Free Throw and Just Friends, are also set to join for select dates.

    This was HUNNY’s second visit to Albany, but their music is well known and well liked within the prominent shoegaze and post-punk scenes in the Hudson Valley, making them a perfect fit to raise the energy for a mid-week show.

    The group opened the show with “JFK,” the lead song off of their 2022 album Homesick. Within seconds of the grungy, overdriven guitar meeting the crowd’s wall of sound, everyone was moving. The band’s own energy on stage is tenable from the photo pit, their own jumps and erratic movements matching their audience’s. The band continued to pull the rest of their setlist from 2022’s Homesick, as well as new planet heaven and their mid-2010s hits, such as “Televised,” and their closer, “Vowels (And The Importance of Being Me).” By the end of their set, the house was full, and the bar was open- all eyes and ears were on HUNNY, and the crowd couldn’t help but move.

    As I was headed out of the venue, I happened to overhear a Mom Jeans fan mentioning the first opener, praising the group’s ability to appeal to potential fans- the last thing I hear her say is, “I don’t know, but they got me jumping!”

  • Twenty One Pilots Announce Clancy World Tour, Coming to Barclays Center

    GRAMMY Award-winning duo Twenty One Pilots announced the details for their biggest global headline tour, The Clancy World Tour, coming to Barclays Center on Sept. 18, 2024.

    The duo shared their new song “Next Semester,” from their highly-anticipated forthcoming album, Clancy, which will be released on May 17 via Fueled By Ramen. Having amassed over 33 billion streams worldwide and over three million tickets sold across global headline tours, the Columbus, OH-based duo of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun have established themselves as one of the most successful bands of the 21st century and redefined the sound of a generation.

    They even notched dozens of multi-platinum certifications and claimed a spot in the Guinness® Book of World Records. Historically, their quadruple-platinum breakout LP, Blurryface, took flight as “the first album to notch a RIAA Gold or Platinum certification for every one of its songs,” while Vessel followed suit. They are one of only 18 artists to earn multiple RIAA Diamond certifications, going Diamond with “Stressed Out” and “Heathens.” 2018’s Platinum-certified Trench extended the concept from Blurryface with the platinum singles “Chlorine,” “My Blood” and the GRAMMY Award-nominated “Jumpsuit.” They followed Trench with their Gold-certified LP Scaled And Icy, achieving “the biggest opening week for a rock album in 2021” by capturing #1 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums charts and crashing the Top 3 of the Billboard 200.

  • Maxwell Announces The Serenade North American Tour Stopping in Brooklyn This Fall 

    Award-winning artist Maxwell has announced The Serenade North American tour which will make a stop at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on September 25, and at Prudential Center in Newark, on October 6

    Over the course of more than 20 years, Maxwell has skillfully captured the attention of music enthusiasts by releasing five studio albums that were all well-received as gems in their own right. When the soul singer released Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, his highly regarded Columbia-debut in April 1996, it completely changed the genre of soul music. The singer-songwriter and record producer Maxwell, will be joined by special guest two-time Grammy winner and R&B powerhouse Jazmine Sullivan and a rising singer-songwriter October London. Maxwell’s return to the road, with the Serenade Tour marks a reunion with Jazmine Sullivan, who joined him on his Maxwell 08 Tour. 

    Jazmine Sullivan’s 2008 debut album Fearless, debuted at number one on Billboard’s top R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart and was nominated for seven Grammy awards, including Best R&B Album and Best New Artist. Sullivan’s natural talent to write songs that beautifully convey the experiences of so many women -especially Black women, was evident in her debut single, “Need U Bad.” Sullivan has a poetic vulnerability that gives many listeners the impression that she has been studying their journals. 

    Also joining the Serenade North American tour is October London, Indiana-based rising star in the music industry. London is a  singer-songwriter and producer who just finished his first US tour. His engaging album The Rebirth of Marvin honors the legendary Marvin Gaye, and the catchy track “Back to Your Place” shot to the top of the R&B radio charts and went on to dominate charts across the country, spending an incredible two weeks at the top of the iTunes R&B Soul Charts. After obtaining a contract with the legendary Snoop Dogg in 2016, October London is still breaking new ground in modern music, mesmerizing audiences with his extraordinary skill and limitless imagination.

  • Annie in the Water Road to Totality Tour Leads to Whiteface on April 8

    With solar eclipse events and preparations underway from Buffalo to Plattsburgh, one New York band, Annie in the Water, has been on a two-month long journey that will find the group performing during the totality on April 8.

    Annie in the Water have been on a ‘Road to Totality’ tour since January, with stops around the Northeast, as well as a trip to Colorado for shows in Denver, Golden and Breckenridge. The longevity of the group and perseverance that led them to their current lineup and performance schedule has been noted by longtime fans, as well as new fans they’ve picked up along the way.

    Following the Colorado shows, Annie in the Water returned back to New York for shows in Rochester and Syracuse, but a performance at Lark Hall was cancelled due to the snow storm over March 23-24. That show is now rescheduled for Friday, April 5, and making for a 4-show run that will catch the band playing in Sackets Harbor on April 6, where the duo of Brad Hester and Michael Lashomb first performed together. They then head south to Woods Valley Ski Area near Rome on April 7, then head north again towards the High Peaks, for a show on April 8 at Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington.

    When asked about playing during the totality of the solar eclipse, Matt Richards (keys/vocals) shared:

    “Just as the eclipse reaches totality, I think myself and as a band will also reach a transient feeling of completeness. The hard work of scheduling, preparing for, and performing the tour will be complete. But just like the eclipse, that moment and feeling won’t last long and it will be onto the next phase for myself, the band, the moon, and the sun.”

    After respite in April, the band will hit four music festivals in the first half of the summer, performing at Shakori Hills in North Carolina, Memorial Meltdown in Lake George, Sterling Stage Folkfest in Sterling, NY and Northlands Festival in New Hampshire in June. They’ll also be part of Twin Ponds Campground ‘3rd Thursday’ concert series this summer, where Backwoods Pondfest was held for many years, in Peru, NY.
