  • In Focus: The Avett Brothers Bring Old Memories, New Music to CMAC

    CMAC kicked off its summer concert season in a big way on Friday, May 24, with the much anticipated return by The Avett Brothers.  The Avett Brothers, who last performed at CMAC in 2019, were joined by Sierra Ferrell.  

    It has been a long road for The Avett Brothers, now in their 24th year together.  The North Carolina natives released their 11th studio album earlier this month, a self titled collection of ballads and rollicky folk-rock tracks which have helped the band build their passionate and devoted fanbase.

    The evening kicked off with a brilliant set by Sierra Ferrell.  Ferrell wasted no time getting the audience out of their seats and dancing along to her unique blend of folk and latin sounds.  Seth Avett joined Ferrell early in the set to duet on the Steven Fromholz classic “I’d Have to be Crazy”, much to the joy of those in attendance.  Ferrell closed out her set with the raucous “Fox Hunt”, which had the energy in the amphitheater boiling over like a pot of water.  

    After a short set change over, the Avett Brothers took the stage and wasted no time showcasing the beautiful harmonies fans have grown accustomed to. The band opened with an acapella duet between brothers Scott and Seth.  The sounds segued brilliantly in to the opening track, the beautiful ballad, “Never Apart” off the band’s latest release.  The band got the party moving next with the wild “Satan Pulls the Strings” which saw each band member taking a turn at the front of the stage to showcase their talents. 

    Through out the evening, the band brilliantly wove their new music with older fan favorites. The stunning new track “Cheap Coffee” held strong along side classic tracks like “Murder in the City”, “The Ballad of Love and Hate,” and “Laundry Room”.

    Late in the set, the brothers reminisced on their past performances in the area.  They spoke of their love for Canandaigua, and having vacationed there last year.  The two praised the audience for the love and devotion they have shown the band since day one, a love not always reciprocated by the media.  “Every night Seth says to me, ‘I love you, goodnight.’  We did not always get that from the media.  Some of them loathed us.  Some even compared us to muppets,” Scott proclaimed. With that, the stage lights dimmed on the band and a spotlight shone on ‘The Avetts’, a muppet version of the band, complete with their own instruments.  ‘The Avetts’ would perform two tracks (with the brothers performing stage left, out of the spotlight), offering a reminder to never take yourself too seriously.

    As the evening closed with the heartfelt “No Hard Feelings”, the band was met with a standing ovation, cheers, high fives and fist bumps. The message the audience sent back to the Avett Brothers was simple.

    “We love you, goodnight”.

  • Cayuga Chamber Orchestra Announces New Music Director

    On May 19, the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, located in Ithaca, announced its next Music Director: Guillaume Pirard.

    The news of Pirard’s selection was revealed at the CCO’s Passing the Baton concert. Pirard will begin his endeavor as Music Director by conducting the first concert of the 2024-2025 season.

    Guillaume Pirard was born in Belgium and studied at the Brussels Conservatory of Music and Den Haag. While attending, he studied classical, Baroque, and romantic styles. He continued his studies at Julliard and the New School, where he earned his master’s in Orchestral Conducting. During his studies, he played in various period ensembles and chamber music series in Europe and the United States. These include the Helicon Foundation, the Smithsonian Chamber Players, the Chamber Music Society of Central Virginia, the Staunton Festival, Les Muffatti and the Context series at Rice University.

    As the co-concertmaster and founding member of The Knights, Pirard has performed on tours all over North America and Europe. These performances include festivals in Tanglewood, Ravinia, Caramoor, the Festival-de-Paques in Aix-en-Provence, the Salzburg Festpiele, the Tonhalle in Zurich, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, and the Muziverein in Vienna.

    In addition to his European tours, Pirard has conducted all over the United States. These include The New York University and Cornell University Orchestras, the Orlando Philharmonic, and the Mannes Orchestra and School of Opera at the New School. Aside from conducting, Pirard has served on multiple university faculties across the United States. While working for the New York University ensembles, he also served on the violin and chamber music faculty. He has presented guest master classes at Cornell University and the University of California at Santa Barbara. Furthermore, he has served as a panelist for several arts organizations. This includes the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, the New York Youth Symphony, and the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. 

    Formed in 1976, the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra is designated as “Ithaca’s orchestra.” Over the years, they have performed hundreds of concerts through a variety of programs. During the season, these performances include the Orchestral Series, Chamber Music Series, holiday concerts, and free Family Concerts. However, most notable is the Willard Daetsch Youth Outreach Program, which provides school students around Tompkins County with instruments and instructors.

  • Judas Priest Rocks Onondaga Lake

    Finishing of the first leg of their Invincible Shield tour, Judas Priest played to a hyped-up crowd in Syracuse on May 22. With the help of Swedish metal group, Sabaton, the stage at Lakeview Amphitheater was rocking the shores of Onondaga Lake for nearly three hours.

    50 years is quite the career in music. 50 years is something even more special when you are a pioneer, and Judas Priest is just that, special. Early pioneers of the heavy metal genre, Rob Halford and crew are still thrashing in 2024, promoting their newest release, Invincible Shield.

    There is certainly some debate as to who are the OG’s of heavy metal. No matter who else you have on your list, Judas Priest deserves a spot. Formed in 1969, the band paved their own path to stardom, and it wasn’t until 1974, when a former salesman of men’s clothing took over as lead vocalist, did the band release an album. A young Rob Halford came in and in September of 1974, Rocka Rolla was released as the first of what would be nineteen studio albums.

    Fast forward to 2024, Judas Priest is celebrating the 50 year anniversary of their first release with a tour as well as new music for fans. Along for the journey is Swedish metal band Sabaton, who had their own following in Syracuse, as the band opened the night with 50-minute set. Formed in 1999, Sabaton is Joakim Brodén, Hannes Van Dahl, Pär Sundström, Chris Rörland, and Thobbe Englund.

    Lead vocalist Brodén and team took the stage that was adorned like a military museum. Photos of fighter jets, mic stands made of militant like weapons, a tank, and band members dressed in fatigues made for the perfect visual to the music, as many of Sabaton’s songs are based on periods of historical events. With Van Dahl and his drumkit perched atop the tank center stage, Sabaton went hard for nearly an hour with metal sounds that seemed like a toned down Rammstein set.

    With some banter between songs, Brodén interacted with the large number of Sabaton fans in the audience, getting them involved. He even chatted briefly with a 4-year-old who was attending their first concert. As the set ends, background music is overpowered by the accepting applause and cheers from the pavilion area, an ode to solid opening act.

    Hitting the stage around 9pm, Halford and Co began their set off with “Panic Attack”, the lead track from newest album. With lyrics that seem to fit the political and social media landscape these days, this was a fitting song for not only the show, but 2024.

    Rounding out the first three for the photographers in the pit, Judas crushed “Rapid Fire” (1980) and “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming” (1982). Lucky for all of us photographers in the front of the stage, Halford and the rest of the band love getting up front and seemingly posing for the cameras.

    While the music of Judas is not for everyone, it is always a joy to see fans bringing their kids to shows. Upfront, you see fans as young as four or five and as old as Halford himself, who is 72. Kids seeing a band their parents grew up with I am sure is a great bonding moment and testament to the power of music. The fact that a band like Judas Priest, while heavier in sound, is pretty family friendly music, which makes the decision to bring a child to the show that much easier.

    As the progresses, fans get more and more into the music, chanting along and pumping fists as soon as the next song begins. “Turbo Lover” was prime example of this. Looking around, you could see faces open up as the drums and guitar notes were recognized. The guy next me ended his Tinder scrolling and the young lady in front of me began hooting and hollering by the time Halford started with “You won’t hear me, but you’ll feel me…”

    Rounding out the set, were two more tracks from Invincible Shield: “Crown of Horns” and “Invincible Shield”, as well as “Painkiller”, which seemed to be the favorite of fans as the sounds from everyone was deafening.

    After 50 years and a number of lineup changes, Judas Priest is still Judas Priest and Rob Halford, although his image has changed, is still Rob Halford. Nineteen studio albums, 50 million albums sold and several music awards later, Judas Priest has solidified their status among the greatest metal bands. Well deserved, they are a 2022 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as they were inducted by Alice Cooper.

  • The Park Theater Foundation Announces 2024 Summer Series Concerts Lineup

    The Park Theater Foundation announced the lineup for their 2024 Summer Series Concerts, beginning June 28 at 7:00 pm at the Crandall Park Bandshell in Glens Falls, NY.

    Each Friday night, from June 28 – August 2nd, 2024, The Park Theater Foundation will host its fourth annual Summer Series Concerts in Glens Falls, NY. The events feature weekly 90-minute live musical performances from local, national, and international artists. All concerts are free to the public at the Crandall Park Bandshell, with the rain location being The Park Theater. serve to promote the artists from both outside of and within the community.

    An award-winning folk rock band from Philadelphia, PA, Stella Ruze blends four-part vocal harmonies with infectious rhythms and horn arrangements to create a new, genre-bending sound.

    Friday, 07/19 – Pascuala Ilabaca & Fauna 

    Hailing all the way from Chile, singer-songwriter Pascuala Ilabaca brings traditional sounds combined with jazz, pop, rock, and influences gathered in such distant places as India or Mexico to Glens Falls. Accompanied by her band Fauna, her unique stage presence conjures up sweetness and empowerment at the same time, setting her songs alive with both fragility and verve.

    The Soggy Po’ Boys mix brass-fueled mayhem with spirituals, meters-style old-school funk, vibrant storytelling, and the Caribbean side of the New Orleans tradition to create a musical experience like no other.

  • The Who’s TOMMY Cast to Perform on GMA on May 28th

    On May 28, 2024, cast from the Broadway hit The Who’s TOMMY will perform on Good Morning America. This performance comes as part of a successful season for the play, which saw critical praise and a Tony nomination.

    The March 2024 revival of The Who’s TOMMY at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre opened to great success. The play is based on the 1969 rock opera Tommy by The Who, which follows the titular Tommy Walker. The Who’s TOMMY tells the story of the protagonist’s childhood trauma, which leaves him deaf, blind, and mute. Despite this, Tommy rises to become a pinball star and cult leader, eventually breaking from his dissociation. Rolling Stone has recognized Tommy‘s significance, ranking it 96th on their greatest albums of all time list. It was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for its “historical, artistic and significant value.” This is not Tommy’s first adaptation, being adapted to stage in 1993, where it ran for 899 performances.

    This revival of TOMMY has received rapturous praise from critics. Des McAnuff’s stage direction, combined with a dreamy, shape-shifting set work with Pete Townsend’s lyricism to create a perfectly dystopian environment. The New York Post praised the show’s “Knockout singing, superbly inventive stagecraft and a star-making performance from 24-year old Ali Louis Bourzgui.” Publications like Theatermania have even called it “the best rock opera ever.” The play is currently up for the 2024 Tony for Best Revival of a Musical. Additionally, the play received the Outer Critics Circle Award and Drama League Award nominations for Outstanding Revival of a Musical.

    The cast will perform on ABC’s Good Morning America twice on May 28th. First, they will perform during the 8:30am Eastern Time half-hour. The cast will follow this with a second performance on GMA3 at 1:30pm Eastern Time.

  • Brooklyn Made Presents: Future City Lounge 3 DJ sets

    Brooklyn Made Presents will host Future City Lounge 3, a DJ event right in Bushwick, Brooklyn on June 1.

    Future City will feature four different dj sets at 8 p.m. including Baba G, Ben Atkind, Cloudchord and Horizon Wireless. This is the third Feature City show that the independent venue has hosted. Artists like Gaby Moreno, Sir Woman and KYLE have also taken the Brooklyn stage.

    Brooklyn Made is making this DJ event different from other sets in the NYC area. Alongside the DJs there will be live drummer team-ups, giving more of a chance for collaborative efforts.

    Baba G, also known as Jon Barber of the Disco Biscuits, mixes live instrumentation, techno tracks and tracks from the Disco Biscuits themselves. Each show is distinct in its improvisation and unique blends. Barber will also be performing later that month on June 7 at Bearsville theater in Woodstock, NY, giving upstate fans a chance to hear his music.

    CloudChord, or Derek VanScoten, is an Emmy Award winning musician from Austin, Texas. His music is inspired by his Jazz and classical guitar studies and he has made a name for himself in the lo-fi pop world. He has reached a wide audience with over 100 million streams. 

    Founding member of Goose, Ben Atkind is another genre mixing artist set for Future City. As a Boston native he went to Berklee College of Music to study drum performance. 

    Horizon Wireless are the Brooklyn Made’s resident DJs. The Duo Harrison Waxenberg (DJ/Producer) and Daniel Scott Lyons (Drummer/Producer) mix house, techno and hip-hop beats to create high energy dance sets. In 2019 they released their debut album Welcome to the Network and most recently in 2023, they released the EP Our Nation is Imagination.

  • The Struts and Kelsea Ballerini Join the Lineup for Special Edition of The Soho Sessions

    On Wednesday, June 5, British rock group, The Struts, and country artist, Kelsea Ballerini will play a special show co-presented by Rolling Stone CEO Gus Wenner and The Soho Sessions, to support Everytown for Gun Safety.

    The Soho Sessions is an exclusive collective of people and shows that create intimate musical, invite-only experiences. They have included performances from Gary Clark Jr., Marcus King, and Lukas Nelson among many others. The shows are produced by RWE Partners, the company behind Love Rocks NYC. They use live music to shed light and support on important issues and have raised over $50 Million for non-profits.

    For this special show, The Soho Sessions and Gus Wenner are utilizing their influence in the industry to bring awareness to gun violence through the organization, Everytown for Gun Safety. Everytown is a network of mayors, teachers, students, and survivors across the country in a movement to end gun violence.

    Gun violence is a preventable epidemic, and an organization like Everytown for Gun Safety is bringing crucial education and awareness to communities nationwide. I am very pleased to be partnering with The Soho Sessions for this special event to help put an end to the urgent issue of gun violence.

    The Struts, who debuted in 2016 with Everybody Wants and have most recently put out their fourth album Pretty Vicious in 2023, will headline the event. The band has opened on tour for The Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters, and Guns N’ Roses. Additionally, they’ve collaborated with Tom Morello, Robbie Williams, and Kesha, who appears on their 2018 hit “Body Talks.”

    Grand Ole Opry member, Kelsea Ballerini, will also be performing in support of Everytown. The singer topped the charts with her debut album, The First Time, and continues to do so. Her recent albums, SUBJECT TO CHANGE and Rolling Up the Welcome Mat, have brought universal praise. Undeniably, her subsequent SNL appearance and Time Magazine cover reflect her influence in country and as a woman in music.

    In addition to the musical acts, actress, and Everytown Creative Council founding chair Julianne Moore will host the performance with model and musician Karen Elson.

    To stop the shooting, we don’t just need to change the laws — we also need to change the culture, which is why Everytown is so grateful to Gus Wenner and RWE Partners for pulling together this group of creative heavyweights. Right now, gunfire is part of the daily soundtrack in too many American communities, and artists like Kelsea Ballerini, The Struts, Karen Elson, and Julianne Moore are harnessing their talents to raise an alarm and rally support.

  • Hopeless Records Celebrates 30 Year Anniversary

    Hopeless Records will be onsite at A2IM Indie Week – June 10 to June 13 – with their 30th Anniversary Museum Exhibit. The Exhibit will debut in New York City and travel nationwide, making stops in Cleveland, OH, at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Las Vegas, NV, at the Punk Rock Museum. The Museum will feature over 1,000 artifacts, including guitars, vintage merch, and original never seen before photos of the recording process.

    Hopeless Records also announced a year of events celebrating the anniversary, releasing a zine and documentary chronicling the 30 years. Hopeless will also release a compilation of their current artist roster and limited edition vinyl re-releases.

    Founded in 1993, Hopeless Records produced pop punk and ska albums emblematic of the ’90s. The label evolved with mainstream tastes, broadening their horizons to a wide variety of acts. Two of their greatest success stories, All Time Low and Avenged Sevenfold joined the label early in their careers, and have accumulated a number of gold and platinum records. Recently, Hopeless has continued to adapt through changing times, signing Gen-Z acts like Destroy Boys, Waterparks, and Scene Queen. Their flexibility has made Hopeless one of the greatest independent labels, selling over 15 million records.

    Additionally, Louis Posen, Hopeless Records’ founder, will be honored at A2IM’s Libera Awards. Posen will receive the Lifetime Achievement award for his leadership, philanthropy, and contributions to independent music. Hopeless Records is nominated for record label of the year and Best Punk Record for Neck Deep’s self titled album.

    A2IM is a not-for-profit dedicated to advocating for the independent music sector. Membership includes over 600 independently owned music labels, which Billboard Magazine identified as the largest music sector with roughly 37% of recorded music sales.

  • The Annual Strawberry Festival by Beacon Sloop Club Returns in 2024

    In Pete and Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park, the Beacon Sloop Club holds its annual volunteer-run Strawberry Festival. This year, the event takes place on Sunday, June 9 from noon to 5 pm.

    The beloved Strawberry Festival brings the Beacon community together to protect and conserve the Hudson River. Music on two solar stages, one dedicated to children, entertains festival-goers throughout the day, accompanied by baked goods and desserts made from locally grown strawberries.

    The Strawberry Festival’s 2024 music program includes the Beacon High School Student Chorus, Bindlestick Bill, David & Jacob Bernz, Eric Person Quartet, Jonathan Kruk, Judith Tulloch Band, Karen Brooks & Melissa Ortquist, Lydia Adams Davis, Rob May, Mighty Girl, Steve & Shirl Kaplan, Spook Handy, Ubaka Hill Drumsong Orchestra. Additionally, the event hosts free activities for children and families, such as clay modeling and pinch pot making. 

    The time-honored community tradition goes back decades. Many guests who remember coming as children are now bringing their children to the festival, making it one of Beacon’s most special summer festivals. This year, visitors can enjoy free sails on the replica 19th Century ferry sloop, the Woody Guthrie on the first sailing day of the season.

    Kids are invited to visit the Environmental Tent and learn about the Hudson River and the fascinating creatures that live in it, or to stop by the various craft activities that populate the grounds. Festival-goers can choose from an exciting lineup of vendors and artisans, including NGYcraftworks, known for their hardwood products for the kitchen and home. 

    At the E-Tent, children and adults alike can find information about the ecology of the Hudson River and its extensive watershed. Younger children can enjoy coloring pages of a Hudson River Creature Activity Book, made by the NYS Dept. of Health. Clearwaters Tideline Program Director, Eli Schloss will also speak on boating navigation and basic compass techniques at 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm.

  • The Red Clay Strays Add Brooklyn Show to Nationwide Tour

    Following the release of their new single, music video, and a performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Red Clay Strays have announced additional dates to their 2024 nationwide headline tour, including a show at the Brooklyn Paramount on October 1. The tour commemorates the release of their highly anticipated second album, Made by These Moments, which will be available on July 26, 2024.

    Formed in 2016 in Mobile, Alabama, The Red Clay Strays are Brandon Coleman (lead vocals, guitar), Drew Nix (electric guitar, vocals, harmonica), Zach Rishel(electric guitar), Andrew Bishop (bass), and John Hall (drums). Their latest single, “Wondering Why,” has pushed the band into the spotlight, spending six consecutive weeks at #1 on the Americana Singles chart.

    The single has received widespread critical acclaim and has even brought the band to be nominated for Emerging Act of the Year at the 2024 Americana Music Awards. Regarding the song, Billboard praises the band saying, “Lead singer Coleman’s gruff, impassioned vocal shines here as always, bolstered by the group’s exemplary musicianship.”

    Since their inception, The Red Clay Strays have reached innumerable success not only on the charts but with their tours as well. This year, the band made their Grand Ole Opry debut and toured across the U.S. Past shows include performing alongside country and Americana music’s biggest names, such as Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Elle King, and Old Crow Medicine Show. Their current tour features special guests such as The Rolling Stones, Carrie Underwood, and Grace Bowers & The Hodge Podge.
