  • A Night of Laughter and Reflection at the LIMEHOF with Jackie Martling

In a recent event at the LIMEHOF, the spotlight shone on the legendary comedian, writer, and actor, Jackie Martling, following a screening of his much-anticipated documentary, “Joke Man.” The intimate setting brought together fans, both familiar and new, creating an atmosphere that resonated with warmth and nostalgia.

Martling opened the evening by expressing his gratitude for the audience’s presence, noting that while previous screenings took place among family, this particular event welcomed strangers as well. As the evening unfolded, Tom Needham, host of the event, guided the conversation through key moments of Martling’s career, providing insights into the making of the documentary and shedding light on the comedian’s multifaceted talents.

    “The Journey to ‘Joke Man’”

The transition of the LIMEHOF to embrace comedians and entertainers of all kinds was highlighted during the interview. Martling, an integral part of the Hall of Fame since its inception, played a crucial role in this evolution. Needham praised the comedian for his diverse career, acknowledging his contributions as a writer, comic, actor, filmmaker, and even a musician.

Martling shared the serendipitous story of how “Joke Man” came to be, emphasizing the collaborative efforts with director and producer Ian Karr.

The Musical Side of Jackie Martling

The conversation then shifted towards Martling’s lesser-known but equally significant role in music. The documentary showcased Martling’s musical journey, featuring his contributions to the soundtrack. Martling humorously confessed that they “stole” his music for the film, recounting his early attempts at music and how he eventually found his comedic calling. The discussion touched upon his initial struggles with music, the evolution of his comedy, and the unexpected joys of making music albums.

Audience members were treated to a sample of Martling’s musical talents as his songs played in the lobby, emphasizing the versatile nature of his artistic pursuits. The interview delved into Martling’s enduring love for music, tracing it back to his early attempts at songwriting and the humorous anecdotes surrounding his musical endeavors.

The Howard Stern Show and Beyond

A significant portion of the interview focused on Martling’s legendary tenure on the Howard Stern Show. The comedian provided a detailed account of how he initially joined the show, highlighting the organic nature of his collaboration with Howard Stern, Robin Quivers, and Fred Norris. Martling debunked the myth of instant success, narrating how he committed to the show for three years without pay before becoming a permanent fixture.

The interview explored Martling’s role as the behind-the-scenes joke writer, detailing the intricacies of how he seamlessly contributed to the show’s comedic brilliance. His reflections on the challenges and successes of the show, including its move to mornings and eventual syndication, underscored the lasting impact of the Howard Stern Show on both Martling’s career and the world of radio.

The evening concluded with Martling reminiscing about the show’s close-knit camaraderie, the fine line between breaking balls and reality, and the unique dynamics that fueled its success. The audience left with a deeper understanding of the man behind the jokes, as well as a renewed appreciation for Jackie Martling’s enduring legacy in the world of entertainment.

  • Khruangbin Announce Tour, Coming to Buffalo, Saratoga Springs, and Queens

Alt trio Khruangbin has announced they are embarking on a major North American tour with support from Hermano Gutiérrez, John Carroll Kirby, Peter Cat Recording Co., Men I Trust, and Arooj Aftab. The A LA SALA tour features a date at SPAC on May 26, Buffalo at Rockin’ At The Knox on May 28, and two dates at Forest Hills Stadium on Sept. 20 and 21.

    Khruangbin tour

Khruangbin was formed in 2009 with Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald Johnson on drums. They take their influence from 1960s Thai funk with their name translating to “Engine Fly” in Thai. The group has toured across the world, with praise from the NY Times, Billboard, and more. The trio recently announced their fourth studio album A LA SALA, their first LP in four years out on April 5. From the get-go, their journey has been its own, ignoring pop expectations and relying on internal aspirations and visions. The building blocks for A LA SALA’s 12 songs were pieces found in Khruangbin’s creative past, parts of the band not lost, but not yet tapped into.

Over the last two years, Khruangbin has sold out shows at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall, Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre and London’s Alexandra Palace, released five live LPs showcasing their stage prowess – featuring guests such as Toro y Moi, Men I Trust and Nubya Garcia, collaborated with Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré honoring his late father, Ali Farka Touré, with the album Ali, and released their second collaborative EP with Leon Bridges, the sultry, chart-topping Texas Moon.

The Ecuadorian-Swiss sibling duo Hermanos Gutiérrez will be supporting Khruangbin on a run of shows in April. Known for their psychedelic, world-building guitar music, they just released their newest single  “Blood Milk Moon”, a spacious and spectral tune that was hailed by WNYC as “night music that is somehow not dark” and named to UPROXX’s Best New Indie list. The single represents the group’s first new music since 2022’s El Bueno Y El Malo, their acclaimed and mythic debut for Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound.

The Khru Club artist presale for the North American tour starts on Tuesday, January 30 at 10 am local time, Spotify Fans’ first pre-sale is on January 31 @ 10 am local time, local/venue presale on Thursday, February 1 @ 10 am local time and regular on sale Friday, February 2 @ 10 am local time. • Brooklyn Public Library & Lincoln Center for Performing Arts Begin Open Call for Contemporary US Anthem

As the musical landscape evolves sonically, the need for contemporary songs & hymns to connect to the ever-changing world is not lost on tastemakers. While, simultaneously, the United States is creeping closer to its 250th anniversary. With this in mind, the Brooklyn Public Library and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts announced their latest project, “Anthem to US.” Presented in collaboration with Queens Public Library, “Anthem to US,” invites the public to join together in creating a contemporary song to add to the nation’s songbook.

Brooklyn Public Library and Lincoln Center for Performing Arts presents Anthem to US.

    What is Anthem to US?

Keeping with the anthem theme, the hope is that the final product from the “Anthem to US” will join in with some of America’s unifying musical pieces, such”America the Beautiful”, “We Shall Overcome”, “My Country Tis of Thee”, and “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” In essence, “Anthem to US” will create a modern piece that connects with a new-age audience. Notably, this latest chant is to be a reflection of today’s society, echoing our collective hopes, struggles, and untold histories.

    Regulations

Interested participants of all ages have until Tuesday, February 6 at 11:59 pm eastern time to submit their vision for an anthem. Following, up to 160 selected participants will embark on an immersive three-part writing workshop series led by experienced instructors. The workshops will explore themes, song structures and melodies across diverse styles. Furthermore, three applicants will advance to collaborate with composers, including Damien L. Sneed, Jaime Lozano, Martha Redbone and Aaron Whitby, to craft a finished piece.

This project aims to transform the way we create meaningful art by inviting the public to create a piece reflective of their own stories and experiences living in the United States. Music and the written word have always had the power to help us face challenging realities, celebrate moments of triumph and, in the best cases, art fosters unity in the face of divisions.

    – László Jakab Orsós, Vice President of Arts and Culture, Brooklyn Public Library.

    Selection Process

Eight anthem lyrics (one per workshop series) will emerge from the workshops, and a panel will select three outstanding sets of lyrics from that bunch. Additionally, the three final participants and their anthem lyrics will team-up with composers who will craft a final composition between May and June 2024. The final participants will then showcase their anthems with performances at Brooklyn Public Library and Lincoln Center on Saturday, July 6, 2024.

Furthermore, interested candidates can find more information on the “Anthem to US” official website.

  • Justin Timberlake is “Selfish” and “Sanctified” SNL with host Dakota Johnson

For the second episode of Saturday Night Live in 2024, Studio 8H welcomed back Madame Web actress Dakota Johnson, along with musical guest and SNL Five-Timer Club member, Justin Timberlake.

    Justin Timberlake SNL

The opening sketch this evening through was a bit more of a cold and dry open, making light of the NFL season coming to an end this weekend (short of the Super Bowl), and draining the last comedic bits of Taylor Swift’s influence, out of the football and SNL seasons.

During Johnson’s monologue where she reminisced about her last stint as host, and brought up The Social Network co-star Justin Timberlake, who showed up to casually remind Johnson that he’s available for sketches, given his Five-Timer Club status.

During the “Waiters” sketch, Sarah Sherman displayed equal parts Gilda Radner and Kristin Wiig with her unique quirk worked in.

“The Barry Gibb Talkshow” returned for the first time since 2013, taking a look at the 2024 election, with Jimmy Fallon making a special appearance as Barry Gibb and Timberlake as Robin Gibb. Bringing this back was a no-brainer with Timberlake on the show this week, even if Fallon has gotten a little tiring as of late.

“Home Videos” would be the highlight of the episode, with Andrew Dismukes as a son who learns his parents were on a Maury Povich-style talk show, where his father (Mikey Day) learned he was the father.

An always a welcome short from Please Don’t Destroy kept their hot streak going, even if Dakota Johnson did knock the trio down a peg, referring to Ben Marshall, John Higgins, and Martin Herlihy as ‘The Lonelier Island’ in a roast-filled segment.

Timberlake performed “Sanctified” for his first song, the second single from his upcoming sixth solo album, Everything I Thought It Was, due out on March 15. JT was joined by Houston rapper Tobe Nwigwe for the rock/rap/R&B number, walking in from stage left, flanked by dancers clad in flowing white dresses, an appearance that was teased last week on Nwigwe’s Instagram.

Timberlake’s second song was the first single from Everything I Thought It Was, “Selfish,” the same title as a 2011 release from his ex, Britney Spears. Surrounded by white neon lines along cascading walls, stripped down with just a drummer and keyboardist, Timberlake sang softly in contrast to “Sanctified,” a more passionate and smooth pop hit in “Selfish.”

SNL returns on Saturday, February 3 with host Ayo Edebiri and musical guest Jennifer Lopez.

  • In Focus: Searows Play to a Sold-Out Crowd at the Mercury Lounge on First Headline Tour

The show was the last of the tour’s U.S. leg and his second in the NYC area, having played Brooklyn venue Baby’s All Right the day before. The intimate, 250-capacity Mercury Lounge proved to be a cozy home for Duckart’s serene sound.

The crowd of fans, mostly in their teens and twenties, cheered and shouted “I love you”s while Duckart tuned his guitar, before opening with his 2023 single “Older.” The room was hushed as Duckart captivated his audience—the crowd swayed and sang along quietly, but many were silently transfixed by Duckart’s blissful acoustic guitar and poetic lyrics.

Duckart wrote, recorded, and produced his own debut album Guard Dog, which was released in September 2022. In 2023, Duckart released the single “House Song,” which has amassed nearly 20 million streams on Spotify. By the end of that year, Duckart signed to Matt Maltese’s record label, Last Recordings on Earth, and released his six-track EP End Of The World, which his ongoing tour is promoting.
