  • New York Singles: Ben Cuomo’s “Single Packs”

New York multi-instrumentalist and producer Ben Cuomo has released two of four what he refers to as “single packs”, entitled “It’s still about you, Lucy” and “Smoke Sits.” Each single is accompanied by an additional intro and outro track, inspired by his background in ambient jazz.

“It’s still about you, Lucy,” officially released on February 7, 2024, was co-written by Cuomo and Brigid Hart. Cuomo says that “teaming up with genius folk singer-songwriter Brigid Hart helped me access the indie folk world after obsessing over artists like Blake Mills, Big Thief, Phoebe Bridgers, Nick Hakim and Luke Temple”.

Ben Cuomo recorded bass, piano, synthesizer, and percussion on the release. He is also the projects engineer, mixing engineer, and mastering engineer. Brigid Hart is accredited with vocals, guitar and shruti box (an instrument of the Indian Subcontinent which is known for its drone accompaniment). Shanne Garcia is also an accredited vocalist.

“Lucy’s Intro” immediately sets the soundscape and vibe for the single pack. A droning background paired with classical jazz paints the scene before perfectly transitioning into the single, “It’s still about you, Lucy”.

Hauntingly beautiful vocal harmonies paired with acoustic guitar just scratch the surface of this extremely well produced track. The vocals complement each other so well, and their strong musical chemistry creates this ethereal quality that transports you during the four and a half minute single.

“Lucy’s Outro” transitions into a solo jazz and classical influenced piano piece, painting the picture of watching the Sunday morning rain hit your windowsill. Cuomo’s recording technique and his ability to create these mental images in his music is powerful, and very well done.

The second “single pack” in Cuomo’s series, Smoke Sits features artists and co-writers JAYA and Ben Milstein. It was officially released on April 19th. Containing a mysterious introduction which notably features JAYA on bass clarinet and flute entitled “Smokes Sits Intro”, this once again perfectly transitions into the folk and indie inspired “Smoke Sits”, tackling the difficulties of leaving home and starting anew, featuring the samples of past works of Cuomo, as well as a poem written by his friend Coral.

Cuomo is a tremendous producer and engineer, and his work in the studio on these “single packs” is nothing short of outstanding and professional.  Find out more about Ben Cuomo at linktr.ee/bencuomo1

Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings have announced the release of The 1974 Live Recordings, a collection of all professionally recorded shows from Bob Dylan’s 1974 performances backed by The Band, including his January 1974 shows at Madison Square Garden.

The collection will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bob Dylan’s return to touring and will be released on Friday, September 20.

The 1974 Live Recordings, to be available as a deluxe box set across 27 CDs, will offer fans 417 previously unreleased Bob Dylan live tracks, including 133 recordings newly mixed from 16-track tape and every single surviving soundboard recording, along with new liner notes by journalist and critic Elizabeth Nelson.

In conjunction with The 1974 Live Recordings, Third Man Records has announced the September release of The 1974 Live Recordings – The Missing Songs From Before the Flood, a 3-LP / 1 by 7-inch set culled from the same recordings, featuring hand selected versions of every song Bob Dylan recorded that was not included on the original 1974 live album. Pressed exclusively on colored vinyl, the set will be available through The Vault, Third Man’s direct-to-customer mail order service.

Bob Dylan’s 1974 Tour marked his first time touring live in eight years and reunited him with The Band, who had become widely renowned in their own right since backing the artist nearly a decade earlier. Booked into arenas for the first time ever, Bob Dylan and The Band performed 30 dates in 42 days (often playing two sets per day) before an average audience of 18,500, helping set a new standard for what rock concerts could look and sound like. And in front of those crowds, they brought an energy that Rolling Stone’s Ben Fong-Torres described as “searing and soaring, unified and precise…excellent in itself.” Music critic Robert Christgau compared the sound to Bob Dylan “running over his old songs like a truck.”

Tour ‘74 kicked off Jan. 3, 1974, at Chicago Stadium, the largest indoor arena in the world at the time it was built, with a tense and combative rip through the ultimate deep-cut “Hero Blues,” an acoustic-gone-electric outtake from The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan sessions that he had scarcely performed before or since. Additional rarities, like a wildly reinvented “Ballad of Hollis Brown,” “Song to Woody” (not performed since 1962) and Planet Waves outtake “Nobody ‘Cept You,”  would be well received on the tour’s first nights. “We were booed off of every stage in Europe,” The Band’s Robbie Robertson recalled to Newsweek of their previous run together. “What happened tonight in Chicago is so reassuring for us.”

The reception wasn’t the only thing that had changed since Bob Dylan and The Band last toured together in 1966. Since then, The Band had released six LPs, played Woodstock and other famous stages, and recorded a series of historic sessions with Bob Dylan, from The Basement Tapes to Planet Waves. For his part, Bob Dylan had effectively retired from the road altogether following a 1966 motorcycle accident, yet was still “widely regarded as the most influential and significant star in the last 10 years of American popular music,” according to The New York Times.

Though they might not have known it at the time, Bob Dylan and The Band were at the vanguard of a new era. Tour ‘74 would help create the template for the major rock tour and codify many of its shared experiences, from the sight of audiences holding up lighters en masse (as captured in the iconic cover image for Before the Flood) to the bright flash of the house lights during a show’s signal moment, in this case, their performance of “Like a Rolling Stone.” Likewise, many songs performed live for the first time on Tour ‘74—”All Along the Watchtower,” “Forever Young” and the show’s eventual opener-and-closer “Most Likely You Go Your Way (and I’ll Go Mine)” —would take on a life of their own.

At the outset, the 1974 Tour was captured on a stereo soundboard mix on both 1/4-inch tape and cassette. By the tour’s end, Asylum Records’ David Geffen had commissioned recordings on multitrack tape, the standard at the time, for eventual release on Before the Flood. The 1974 Live Recordings includes it all—the cassettes and 1/4-inch tapes and the shows that were recorded on 16-track tape, newly-mixed for this collection.

Preorders for the collection are available here. A previously unreleased performance of “Forever Young,” live in Seattle, on Feb 9, 1974, can be found here. See below for the full track list of The 1974 Live Recordings.

  • WYLDLIFE Rocks Out With New Single ‘Fast Dreams’

On June 21, NYC-based punk rock band WYLDLIFE released their newest single, “Fast Dreams.” The new single is the band’s first release since their 2020 album, “Year of the Snake.” Complete with fast-paced guitar riffs, a moving bassline, and exciting, gritty vocals, “Fast Dreams,” WYLDLIFE makes headbanging-worthy rock and roll music fun again.

    wyldlife

For over the last decade, WYLDLIFE has brought the 70s rock and roll style back to New York City’s music scene. Their fun-filled single and music video are the latest thing to come out of their label, Wicked Cool Records. WYLDLIFE has four members: Dave Feldman (vocals), Sam Allen (guitar), Spencer Alexander (bass), and Russ Barrnett (drums), each committed to bringing back the classic sounds of the 70s like Blondie and Ramones. Since 2009, WYLDLIFE has released 4 full studio albums and were nominated for an Independent Music Award for Best Rock/Hard Rock Song.

Their newest single, however, is a captivating mix of sounds from different eras. The 70s inspiration is absolutely prevalent, but upon first listen, it feels like a 2000s power anthem. The fast-moving bassline, combined with Feldman’s vocals, is reminiscent of alt-rock outfits like Palaye Royale, Arcade Fire, and The White Stripes. Amidst the current ever-popular trap and indie-pop scene, WYLDLIFE’s newest single is a fantastic juxtaposition that has all the right elements of nostalgia, yet still manages to sound fresh, original, and new.

The lyrics of “Fast Dreams” tell an incredibly relatable story about someone excited for their dreams to come true while having to wrestle with the mundane parts of life. “Fast Dreams” brings us a familiar narrative about someone trying to make their dreams come true as fast as possible because they are simply too excited for success. “Fast Dreams” feels like a song that would belong on the soundtrack of a coming-of-age movie, with the narrator’s contradictory feelings of angst and excitement.

Along with their newest single, the music video for “Fast Dreams” is also out for consumption. Animated in the style of a 2-bit arcade game, the music video features WYLDLIFE as video game characters, racing against reality and time to achieve their goal. The message of the single is executed perfectly, and it is obvious that the group had a blast when creating the video together. “Fast Dreams” was the best thing to come out of their four-year-long hiatus.

“Fast Dreams” is available on all streaming platforms. To watch their music video or check out any of WYLDLIFE’s other powerhouse anthems, check them out on Bandcamp. For any touring information, follow their Facebook page.

  • Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers Announce Manhattan Show at Drom

Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers, a genre-bending band from Michigan, announced new dates on their 2024 tour. The Rainbow Seekers will be playing Drom, a venue in the East Village. Known for their high energy, danceable music, the Rainbow Seekers’ tour promises an exciting show.

The additional tour dates were announced following the release of their newest single, “Turn This Train Around”. The track describes Hertler’s experience after a breakup, specifically, the moment, “joy pierced through [his] sorrow” and it “felt good to dance again”.

    Jake Mulka

Founded in Lansing, Michigan, Joe Hertler & the Rainbow Seekers are known for their upbeat, spirited performances. The Rainbow Seekers’ energy is contagious, they live up to the optimism their name invokes. Their music is far from one dimensional: high-energy, life-affirming live shows feature pensive-yet-uplifting lyrics featured on their album, Pursuit of Wonder.

The band explores philosophical truths on their album, “looking at opposites: life or death, good or bad, happiness or sadness. None of those things can exist without the other.” Though the subject matter is existential, Joe Hertler is far from nihilistic. He described the process of writing the album as “uplifting’, and expressed a desire for the listener to “appreciate the brevity of their existence”.

  • Soul Coughing Announces Reunion Tour With Final Date in NYC

Soul Coughing, one of the most unique and influential rock and roll bands of the last four decades, is returning to the stage fully formed for the first time in 25 years.

All four original members, Mike Doughty, Sebastian Steinberg, Mark degli Antoni and Yuval Gabay will be performing from coast to coast this September and October, capping the tour off with back-to-back nights in New York City.

    NIELS VAN IPEREN/GETTY IMAGES

Each exclusive performance will feature songs from their El Oso, Irresistible Bliss and their genre-defining debut album Ruby Vroom which celebrates its 30th anniversary this fall.

The four members of Soul Coughing have said it again and again to audiences, fans, and journalists: We will not reunite. Stop asking. Well, you might want to pose that question one more time, because the tune has changed. This fall, all four original members will take the stage once more, with 17 dates across the country—bringing their glorious, off-kilter magic to a whole new audience.

Mike Doughty (vocals/guitar), Mark degli Antoni (keyboards/sampler), Sebastian Steinberg (bass), and Yuval Gabay (drums) formed Soul Coughing in 1992 after meeting at New York’s Knitting Factory, where Doughty worked the door. A truly eclectic collection of musicians, the guys merged drum & bass, trance, rock & roll and hip-hop to create a totally unique strain of music. As Doughty says: “Our music didn’t fit into the landscape then and it doesn’t now. We were super incorrect. We were messy. We were all over the place. There were moments in our career where we tried to be less different, and we always failed.” And thank God for that.

Over their eight-year history, the guys collected a motley crew of fans who gravitated to the deeply weird—yet danceable—energy of their discography, starting off with their 1994 debut, Ruby Vroom. They broke up in 2000, but Soul Coughing has lived on in the minds and hearts of their most ardent fans—and a new crop of listeners who may have heard standouts like “Super Bon Bon” on a video game soundtrack or “Circles” on a favorite TV show.

And the guys themselves are no slouches. Doughty has been releasing solo records at a steady clip since the band broke up and has penned two memoirs. Meanwhile, degli Antoni has thrown himself into the soundtrack world, scoring films by the likes of Wernor Herzog. He also collabed with Steinberg, who has played with everyone from Iron & Wine to Fiona Apple—notably on her critically acclaimed 2020 record Fetch the Bolt Cutters. Steinberg also linked up with Gabay on a drum and bass project called UV Ray and select recordings for Suzanne Vega. Gabay then moved to the U.K. and recorded with DJ Krust, ADF, and Roni Size Reprazent.

When they hit the 30th anniversary of Ruby Vroom, though, Doughty started looking backward. After playing the whole record on tour solo, he reached out to the band with a radical idea: a reunion tour where they’d play a best-of collection of tracks from Vroom, 1996’s Irresistible Bliss, and 1998’s El Oso. “The end was acrimonious, but I just thought I’d give it a shot,” he says. “So I just wrote an email to all three guys. It took a little convincing for some of them, but I was really gratified that everyone wanted to take part in that again—to see if we can be a great band again.”

To say the guys were shocked might be a bit of an understatement. But it was also a kind of much-needed salvation. “When he first reached out it was such a relief,” says Steinberg. “We all have our part to play in any dysfunctional relationship. But it was an immediate relief. I could just say, ‘Hey, man, we did something wonderful. And I’m sorry, too. That was cool.’” Gabay had a similar reaction: “I respect the music. I love what I did there. I love what the guys are doing—we were a good band.”

As for the setlist, that’s still in flux. Doughty lives in Memphis, degli Antoni in New York, Steinberg in L.A., and Gabay in Jerusalem, so they have yet to get together for rehearsals. Still, they’re all practicing—and will rehearse for a solid week leading up to the show. Doughty is singing three hours per day, Steinberg is getting back into the very muscular swing of Soul Coughing, as is Gabay—and degli Antoni? He’s unearthing his old sampler—which he bought decades ago with his student loan money—and sorting through everything from snippets of ‘60s songs to seagull calls.

“We’re just trying to pick the songs that bring us joy,” Doughty says. “We’re really trying to kind of revel in each other as musicians and that’s what the setlist is going to be based on. One thing that’s always been true about this band is every song is somebody’s favorite song.”

“Really one of the best conversations I’ve had in this band ever was Mike and I sitting down by the L.A. river for almost two hours and just going through the songs,” Steinberg adds. “I think there’s nothing I wouldn’t try to tackle, because it’s all so insane.” As for the clubs, they went back to venues that supported them back in the day. “Our agents did some archaeological work, finding people in the music business that would really care about this—and really, really be excited about it,” Doughty says.

As they head toward making history, all Soul Coughing knows for sure is that the band was something special—something never replicated. And this time around, it’s all about unity. “Music is a place of escapism, for people to go to a magical world,” Gabay says. “That’s what interests me. I want to bring people together. How can you bring a variety of people to the gig? Music brings people together—both the band and the audience.”

And as for how they promised to never get back together? “We just decided to let bygones be bygones. You know, everybody had issues,” Doughty says. “Our fans are going to be shocked, man. I can’t even believe how much they’re going to be shocked.”
