After a hugely successful European tour, 2024 will be culminating with five highly anticipated shows for The Felice Brothers.

The band’s end of the year run of shows kicks off Friday, December 27 in Williamsburg at Brooklyn Bowl, followed by a show at Brooklyn Bowl in Philadelphia. December 29 finds the group in Rockville Centre at Centre Station, and round the year out with two hometown shows for this incredible Americana band at brand new venue Assembly Kingston.

    The felice brothers kingston

The Felice Brothers call the Catskill Mountains home, yet much of their success to their early days busking and playing in around New York City. Playing unplugged wherever they could the band found their distinct sound and style, penning such songs as “Frankie’s Gun” from their self titled album and covering “This Land Is your Land” like Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan, whom Ian Felice’s songwriting has been compared with.

With three new brilliant records the past three years and an entire catalogue from the past 20 years, The Felice Brothers have been leaving audiences in awe with their foot stomping sing alongs, to tender ballads and everything in between.

    The felice brothers kingston

Through 18 official releases and gosh knows how many secret recordings (check out their black limo recording), The Felice Brothers have stuck to their roots, while experimenting (“Celebration, Florida”), finding new form and maturing as musicians all while capturing the heart of American life, strife, beauty, grit, struggle and the knowledge that each soul has their own unique story. From the rowdiness of their live record Tonight at the Arizona (which was also re-issued ten years later as part of a special record store day recording) to the more produced Yonder is the Clock during their first decade as a band is amazing to go back through as a listener.

This writer was lucky enough to attend the 2019 and 2023 NYE concerts at Colony Woodstock and the band brought in many special guests, playing on songs old and new, amazing covers and so ,many special moments that left all smiling from ear to ear right into the New Year. The Felice Brothers are sure to bring out many more such more moments in celebration of their 20 year Anniversary as America’s top Americana band and the critically acclaimed songwriting that stands the test of time as well as the appreciation of their peers.

The band shared their thoughts on the upcoming shows: “Friends and loved ones, we are doing it again! Holiday shows! Some old favorites and a NEW never before rocked venue in Kingston. Now you know what you’re doing to close out 2024.”

The Felice Brothers have had a few lineup shakeups as their brother Simone moved along very nicely with a solo career, and the band found a new stride in 2014 with the release of Favorite Waitress. The new lineup also but out an incredible record Undress in 2019 and in the past few years has put out From Dreams To Dust (2021), Asylum On The Hill (2023), and Valley of Abandoned Songs (2024) which they have just finished a European tour supporting. Each record is a set of new treasures, and both Ian and James Felice have truly found their voices and are complemented so well by the backline and backing vocals of Jesske Humme (bass), Will Lawrence (drums).

Located in Kingston’s vibrant Uptown/Stockade District, Assembly Kingston is poised to become avcornerstone of the region’s burgeoning arts and culture scene. These New Year’s Eve performances will be a special homecoming for the band, who will take the stage to ring in 2025 with their signature blend of folk, rock, and heartfelt storytelling.

The Felice Brothers’ return home this December will surely lead to an unforgettable New Year’s Eve celebration. The beloved Americana band will perform two back-to-back shows on December
30 and 31, marking the highly anticipated inaugural event at the brand-new venue, Assembly Kingston.

Tickets are available now for the entire tour, and are selling quickly. There is a low ticket alert for both Assembly Kingston shows. You can find them here.

  • Long Island’s Roger Street Friedman Releases Powerful New Single “Banks of the Brazos”

Long Island native Roger Street Friedman has released his newest americana single, “Banks of the Brazos.” The track is a powerful ode to the “Sugarland 95,” a group of Black convict laborers sentenced to brutal work in Texas sugarcane fields in the post-reconstruction era.

    Roger Street Friedman

“Banks of the Brazos” is the third single from his upcoming album Long Shadows, due out January 24, the song is a powerful and evocative story that looks into the hidden history of the “Sugarland 95,” a group of African American men who were often victims of unjust laws designed to control the lives of newly freed people.

When the bodies of the Sugarland 95 were unearthed along the banks of the Brazos River, Roger Street Freidman was inspired to write a song from the perspective of one of these laborers. The song aligns with a viral TikTok that Roger posted last year, garnering nearly a million views, resonating with audiences for his honest storytelling.

    Roger Street Friedman

The song holds a strong outlaw americana feel. The western country flare paired with the dark nature of the song’s backstory sets the listener up to feel it in their heart. Each strum of the guitar shows Roger Street Friedman’s passion and grit for music and exposing history’s many injustices. The track is dynamic, with many changing musical tides throughout the track, but with a meaningfully brawn backbone allowing for wide arrays of sound.

Even the opening sounds from the electric and acoustic guitars simultaneously made me feel something. Followed by the consistent, strong kick and snare, this track immerses the listener from the very start. Both Friedman’s hearty solo vocals and the powerful harmonizing vocals truly touch the heart and soul of whomever may be listening, especially when you factor in how Roger is soulfully expressing his outlook on the horrible enslavement of the Sugarland 95. The track sees a phenomenal climax with soaring vocals followed by a spirit-touching finish that brilliantly yet softly wraps up the hearty ode.

  • Bad Mary and Mega Infinity Release “Mega Bad Disaster Party”

Long Island bands Bad Mary and Mega Infinity have teamed up through SPI (Ska Punk International), to release a split 7-inch single, “Mega Bad Disaster Party.” Each band contributed two newly recorded tracks. The single will be released digitally on Dec. 3, with a vinyl release party on Feb. 21 at Industry in Huntington.

    Mega Bad Disaster Party

“Mega Bad Disaster Party” begins with two songs from Mega Infinity, “Eyelids 2024” and “Let Me Drive My Van Into Your Heart” followed by “Disaster(er) Party” and “Want What I Want” from Bad Mary. The collection of songs sounds like if Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was a Broadway Musical.

Bad Mary reached out to SPI about doing an EP and adding some ska elements to their songs. SPI suggested collaborating with Mega Infinity, since they’ve been friends with Mega for a decade, the collaboration was a no-brainer. Many of the songs on the single are rerecorded and reimagined versions of songs from previous projects. These new versions are cleaner, more aggressive, and harder-hitting.

“Eyelids” was written for an EP several years ago, drawing inspiration from ska-punk, riot grrrl, and bands like Catch 22, Veruca Salt, and Big D. Joystick! is featured on the song, enhancing its ska-punk influences. “Disaster(er) Party” was originally titled “Disaster Party” and was written for The Return of Space Girl. For this single, the song has been reimagined with horns added by Kevin Jackson from Title Holder and Crisis Crayons.

Bad Mary consists of Amanda Mac (vocals), Mike Staub (bass/vocals), Bill Mac (drums), and David Henderson (guitar). They have received airplay on SiriusXM’s Underground Garage, earning the New Music Spotlight. The band has released two albums and six EPs since 2014 including their 2019 album, The Return of Space Girl that inspired an award-winning animated movie. Their latest release, Better(er) Days, arrived in 2024.

Mega Infinity is comprised of Michi and Mike DiGiulio. The band released their EP Behind Glass Walls in 2017 and their debut album Rainbow Heartache in December 2021. They joined SPI with their 2023 EP Chaos Magick, which was named a favorite by Punk News and On the Upbeat. They are featured in the ska documentary This is New Tone as a part of ska punk’s future.

  • LIMEHOF 20th Anniversary Holiday Celebration: DMC, Ernie and the Band, and More Shine at Two-Day Event

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) marked its 20th anniversary with a special Holiday Celebration over the weekend of November 30th and December 1st. This two-day event brought together an incredible mix of local and legendary talent, creating an unforgettable experience for attendees.

Day 1: A Rich Tapestry of Sounds

The festivities kicked off on November 30th, featuring an eclectic mix of performances. Casey Adams opened the night with his soulful energy, followed by Mark Newman’s smooth rock stylings. The Kerry Kearney Band brought their signature blend of blues and rock, while the Stanton Anderson Band closed out the evening with an electrifying set that kept the crowd on their feet.

    Day 2: A Star-Studded Celebration

The second day, December 1st, was a true celebration of music, featuring a lineup that spanned genres and generations. One of the highlights of the day was the performance by Ernie and the Band, who took the stage with a setlist that included Tangled Up in Blue, No Rest, Summertime, and Dead Man Walking. The band’s dynamic sound was a testament to their organic, genre-blending approach to music, which has earned them a devoted following.

I had the chance to talk with Ernie and the Band after their performance, where they shared insights into their musical journey. Founders John and Rob, best friends since childhood, were joined by Nick and Brady, who completed the band’s lineup. Their songwriting process is fluid, beginning with a simple melody, lyric, or progression that grows into a full song. The band cited standout performances at the Great South Bay Music Festival and their recent two-night run at Industry in Huntington as major highlights of their career.

Next up was the legendary DMC (Daryl McDaniels), who took the stage with Johnny Juice and Richard Barone. Before his performance, I had the chance to speak with DMC, where he shared how his passion for storytelling has expanded beyond music. He began by talking about how his college lectures evolved into speaking engagements at high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools, where he adapted his message for younger audiences. His love for storytelling led him to write a children’s book about his childhood experience with bullying, offering kids a relatable narrative that connects with his career in hip-hop.

DMC also reflected on his early influences, revealing how his love for comic books sparked his creativity before he found music through the diverse sounds of 1970s New York radio. When I asked about today’s hip-hop scene, DMC rejected the notion that hip-hop is only for the young, asserting that veteran artists like himself continue to carry the torch for future generations.

In a conversation with DJ Johnny Juice, renowned turntablist and producer for Public Enemy, he emphasized the importance of authenticity for aspiring DJs and producers, advising them to “do it for yourself” and trust that the right audience will follow. Juice distinguished between DJ culture and turntablism, praising the technical advancements but cautioning against losing the human touch, urging DJs to “inject your personality into the cut.” Reflecting on his roots as a Latin percussionist, he explained how his rhythmic style of scratching was influenced by playing bongos and congas as a child. His move from the Bronx to Long Island allowed him to blend diverse influences, creating a unique, genre-defying sound that set Long Island hip-hop apart.

A major highlight of DMC’s set was his tribute to Billy Joel, where he shared his excitement about a collaboration that blends Billy Joel’s You May Be Right with hip-hop. DMC jokingly revealed his dream of getting Billy Joel involved in writing original songs for his Broadway musical, which is based on DMC’s life story. “I think Billy Joel needs to be a part of this. We’re gonna make history, baby!” DMC laughed.

Following the tribute, DMC performed several Run-D.M.C. classics, including It’s Tricky, Walk This Way, and Christmas in Hollis. The crowd was energized as he seamlessly blended his iconic hip-hop sound with rock influences, paying homage to the roots of both genres. DMC’s son, Dson McDaniels, also performed his new song Pray, showing the next generation of McDaniels talent.

He also praised the LIMEHOF as a “holy place” where diverse genres come together to create a rich cultural tapestry—a “gumbo” that nourishes the heart, mind, body, and soul. Reflecting on his journey from a fan listening to rock legends on the radio to sharing stages with icons like David Lee Roth, Dave Navarro, and Aerosmith, DMC highlighted the surreal honor of standing among those he once admired. He emphasized the unity of genres—rock, hip-hop, blues, and jazz—and reminded the audience that while disco may have faded, the music and its spirit live on. With heartfelt gratitude, DMC concluded by urging everyone to keep dancing and supporting live music, leaving the audience energized and inspired.

After DMC’s electrifying performance, comedian Paul Anthony took the stage for a killer stand-up routine that had the audience laughing from start to finish.

The festivities continued with Firetog & Co, who performed tracks like How a Heart Breaks and Ball and Chain, followed by American Idol’s Christiaan Padavan, who captivated the crowd with his renditions of Vienna by Billy Joel, Just the Two of Us, I Left My Heart in San Francisco, and Please Come Home for Christmas.

The celebration at the LIMEHOF concluded with a high-energy performance from The Original Gossip Band, who closed out the weekend with their songs Above Water, Front Liners, Megan, and Driving to the End.

  • Flashback: The King of Blues plays Westbury Music Fair

On December 2, 2012, the King of Blues, B.B. King played Westbury Music Fair, which is now know as NYCB Theatre in Westbury, New York. At the time he was 87 years but still enjoyed playing for his adoring fans.

    King Blues

King started his music career in 1949 on Beale Street in Downtown Memphis, Tennessee. He named his first guitar Lucille when he ran into a burning building to save it, and later learned that the fire was caused by two men knocking over a barrel of kerosene while fighting over a girl named Lucille. His guitars were usually black Gibson guitars and in 1980, Gibson introduced a B.B. King custom model.

King recorded some of the greatest rock n’ roll hits of all time like “3 O’Clock Blues,” “You Know I Love You,” “Woke Up This Morning,” “Please Love Me,” “Every Day I Have the Blues,” “You Upset Me Baby” and of course his signature hit single “Lucille,” just to name a few. He also found commercial success through a series of all-star collaborations.

    King Blues

On his 1997 album Deuces Wild, he enlisted artists such as Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, The Rolling Stones and Willie Nelson. In 2000, he collaborated again with Eric Clapton for the Grammy winning album Riding with the King. He has released 43 studio albums and 16 live albums and a number of compilations.

AllMusic recognized B.B as “the single most important electric guitarist of the last half of the 20th century.”  He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. He is one of he most influential blues musicians of all time. He is also ranked at No. 6 in Rolling Stone magazine’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Over the course of his 60 year-plus career, he has received 18 Grammy awards, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Kennedy Center Honors, among many other awards.

King died in May of 2015 at the age of 89. His body was flown to Memphis and a funeral procession went down Beale Street with thousands of people watching and a brass marching band playing “When the Saints Go Marching In.”  His body was then driven down Route 61 to his hometown of Indianola, Mississippi where he was laid to rest.

A household name in the UK for his various television hosting roles and regular appearances on panel shows, and countless specials,  Jimmy Carr has been a best-selling comedian before streaming services were viable.

With twelve specials to his name, eight of which earned Carr the title of one of the bestselling acts in comedy DVD and the remaining four being the first works from a UK comedian to stream on Netflix, Carr has bridged the physical and digital comedy spheres.

In addition, all of his specials that were taped pre-streaming are now housed on his official Youtube account that has accrued over 1.1 million subscribers and a massive 436 million views in total.

Following the success of his last tour, Terribly Funny, that brought him to 1.2 million ticket holders across 45 countries total, Carr has decided to hit the road once more and visit over 40 venues across the United States- including The Paramount in Huntington and the iconic Beacon Theater in Manhattan.

The Laughs Funny tour will bring Jimmy Carr to Long Island on Wednesday, June 25 and Manhattan on Friday, June 27. Tickets for Laughs Funny will go live on Friday, November 22 at 10:00 AM.
