  • Amayo Releases Vibrant Single “Black Magic Sister” Ahead Of Debut Solo Album

Former frontman of Antibalas and Afrobeat pioneer Amayo has released “Black Magic Sister” ahead of his debut solo album, Lion Awakes.

    Photo: Kory Thibeault

Known best as the former frontman of Antibalas, it’s nearly an understatement to describe Amayo as a legend in the Afrobeat scene. Often credited with the globalization of Afrobeat and contributing to the sound becoming a genre of itself, Amayo moved to New York City in 1995 from Nigeria.

Having attended Howard University, Amayo eventually moved to Brooklyn and found his niche in designing clothing and teaching Kung Fu out of his Afrospot Temple.

While there, Amayo was approached by two of his future bandmates with an invitation to join their new band named Antibalas- and the rest is history. Over the course of 23 years, Amayo became the face of the band while lending his voice and songwriting skills to the group.

Parting ways with Antibalas to pursue his solo career, Amayo has returned to the public eye with the announcement of his debut album Lion Awakes and the release of its first track, “Black Magic Sister”.

Dedicated to his rich Nigerian heritage and Chinese martial arts teachings, Lion Awakens is a testament to Amayo’s boundless creative vision and deep love for his craft. Opening the five track album with “Black Magic Sister,” he makes a vibrant first impression.

Just under six and a half minutes in length, “Black Magic Sister” is a rich soundscape of percussion, keyboard, horns, and vocals- both Amayo’s own and a chorus of supporting voices.

“[Black Magic Sister is] about offering Blessings for an abundant mindset. It’s also a prayer for twins and a wish for those who lost close ones.”

    – Amayo

Amayo’s debut solo album Lion Awakes is slated for release on January 17, a set of fierce afrobeat tracks that promises listeners a sonic adventure through myth and reality. In anticipation for the release an official album release party to be held at the Brooklyn Bowl on January 29.

  • Harrison Lipton Releases Post-Breakup Soft Rock Single “On My Own”

Brooklyn-based soft rock/indie artist Harrison Lipton has released his latest single “On My Own” which masks post-breakup sadness with cheeky humor.

    harrison lipton

Musical jack-of-all-trades Harrison Lipton releases his cheeky new breakup anthem “On My Own” via Amuse. The facetious, 70s-inspired dad rock song uses the all too familiar coping mechanism of poking fun at inherent sadness to make it through the day. His voice full of smooth earnestness, Lipton ushers listeners towards the greener grass on the other side. Harrison Lipton is a 30-year-old singer, songwriter and producer. The Brooklyn artist’s musical flair resides in the intersection of indie, R&B and 70s soft rock.

Now with the focus shifted to his own releases, Lipton unveiled “Synchronized Swimming,” with its captivating accompanying music video, back in September. Exploring romance coyly nestled within the metaphor of synchronized swimming, listeners witness Lipton’s proven songwriting and production talent in raw form. Complete with dusty piano, laid-back Khruangbin-like drums, and an underwater guitar solo, the final touch is the perfect pairing of background vocals from MICHELLE’s Layla Ku. “On My Own” keeps building the world “Synchronized Swimming” started, putting forth a distinctly clean and modernized late 70s aesthetic.

    harrison lipton

Lipton prides himself on fully realizing a track from start to finish, leading the charge with songwriting, producing, and mixing, as well as creative direction. Lipton’s music is a product of his singular imagination, presenting a style that is sincere, authentic and all his own.

His music has been featured in NPR and Early Rising as well as on numerous editorial playlists such as Apple Music’s Late-Night Menu and Spotify’s Fresh Finds and Chill Vibes. Now focusing on new singles leading toward a larger project, Lipton emerges as a promising and unique voice, blending soulful vocals with singular and catchy production.

  • Camille Schmidt Releases Unflinchingly Honest Single “XOXO”

Brooklyn based singer-songwriter Camille Schmidt has released her latest single “XOXO” in preparation for her debut album Nude #9.

    camille schmidt

Brooklyn based and raised in a constant environment of creativity, it’s no wonder why Camille Schmidt has picked up all spans of musical skill over the years. Spending extensive amounts of time in her parents’ art studio, Schmidt found endless inspiration in both the work her parents created and the people who would come in and out of the space.

Debuting as a musician this past June with the EP Good Person, Camille carved out a queer folk-rock sound for herself that reflected her larger ability to balance an innately wry sense of humor with deeper moments of devastatingly quiet self-reflection with tracks like the alt-country “Your Game” and her wistful approach to heartbreak with “Bumblebee Drinks Lavender.”

Returning for her debut album, Schmidt pulls from her experiences in her parents’ studio in Nude #9, each track a portrait of herself, her family, and her lovers past and future- just as each live model drawing session would result in pieces titled in the same convention, a unique reflection of each individual’s perspective on the subject.

Whimsical, hilarious, and deeply felt, Schmidt’s debut album digs deeper into her experiences with romance, sexuality, friendship, and her sense of self. Newly released from the Nude #9 project is “XOXO,” a fascinating layering of electronic manipulation that speaks to every corner of Camille’s inner thoughts.

Wandering from thoughts of raising a child with her best friend to contemplating the “demon in my room” she faces when she’s alone, “XOXO” is a track tinged with an unplaceable sense of something impending. Beginning with a rather upbeat digital track, the song progressively spirals and collapses in on itself as Schmidt becomes half-woman, half-machine. By the conclusion of the song, listeners are left with a feeling of evolution- she’s buried her former self and grown into something new.

Paired with the release of “XOXO” is its official music video that takes the concept of burying your past self to another level. Viewers watch as Camille dons a hazmat suit and brandishes a mop, opening the door to the bloodied motel bathroom where the body of her past self lies.

A perfect echo of the song’s themes that are simultaneously impressive and ironic, the “XOXO” music video is a testament to Schmidt’s signature creative attitude and growth as an artist.

“XOXO” by Camille Schmidt is out now and Nude #9 is slated for release on January 10. To keep up with Camille Schmidt’s current works and future endeavors, check out her official website here.

  • Orion Sun’s Overdue Brooklyn Steel Homecoming

Four years from the frays of the pandemic, Tiffany Majette, the New Jersey-born Orion Sun, is finally getting to live her dream out on the road. In the tender confessional on her Brooklyn Steel set on Thursday, November 7, the R&B songwriter reminisced on her first time in the Big Apple (the event marking the second occurrence), though, as she admits, what should’ve been a milestone performance felt like it didn’t really count.

    Photos by Zachary Giller

“I was performing to an empty room, to a screen and there were clapping emojis at the end of every song,” she professed. “I remember being really scared that this was the new normal.”

    Photos by Zachary Giller

Ever the optimist, Orion Sun didn’t let the stark anecdote’s sentimentality linger around long enough to sour, urging listeners to “don’t think about it too hard” into her lapse of vulnerability, choosing instead to let her music do all the heavy lifting.

    Photos by Zachary Giller

Unbeknownst to her, despite all the worldly circumstances, 2020 proved to be a groundbreaking year. The singer-songwriter released two seminal albums, A Collection of Fleeting Moments and Daydreams and Hold Space For Me two months apart at the year’s emergence. And despite the catastrophic shutdowns that began mere days before the release of Hold Space For Me, Orion Sun forged ahead, gaining millions of eager fans with similar grievances and all the time in the world to slow down and listen.

    Photos by Zachary Giller

On the stage set in East Williamsburg, a neighborhood teeming with hipsters and bearing a reputation as such, Orion alludes to a childhood of poverty and the embers of hope back when her days felt as dark as the obsidian-drenched room she currently occupied. With a timbre that oozes honey-like sincerity and eau de Jorja (Smith) tonality, she seduces with the throes “Space Jam – An Odyssey,” a track revealing dreams of a faraway home, as someone once intimately familiar with the rows of homelessness and housing insecurity:

“You wear Michael Jordans, I can’t afford them / I got dreams of Paris, I’d love to share them / I wanna go real far, like really, really far,” Orion croons, voice ringing with the disarming tenderness and lucidity of a teenager forced to grow up too quickly.

    Photos by Zachary Giller

And travel Orion does, even within the confines of the 20,000-square-foot arena, never beholden to one place or once stagnating as she bounces lightly from left stage to right, surely making up for lost time, vocals even-kneeled and steady alongside improvised yet fluid choreography.

    Photos by Zachary Giller

Her status as a former theater kid may serve as the resume for her captivating stage presence and even reserves Orion Sun the right to show off a little, with all the towel-flinging theatrics, a show-stopping megawatt smile, and endless gestures of gratitude in the form of generous leapfrogging daps and unadulterated quirks inundated with outbursts like “throat coat” and cheeky requests for a “No Judgement Zone.” As she leans into the opening acoustics of “These Days,” making promises that it’s really love that keeps us warm on days you’re “trying to keep your head above water,” you’re inclined to believe her, surrendering all lackluster cases against her indomitable thesis.

    Photos by Zachary Giller

Fiddling with dials and clacks of a synthesizer, the self-made producer gave a glimpse at the honed skills that allowed her to retain all her masters as the sole writer and producer on her earlier works (“They want a ransom but if you make it yourself, the beat is free,” she sings cheekily in “Sailing”) and which attracted offers from big-time record labels. A twist here and a tap there, a dialed back reverb, and it’s a remix, on the fly: “This sounds better,” she joked, re-upping an intro with the click of a button.

    Photos by Zachary Giller

Maybe predictably from someone who earlier in the night confessed to a craving of human interaction, Orion Sun proved to be a flight risk. Traipsing her way from left stage, confusion flooded the room from wall-to-wall as the top of Orion’s head disappeared — and re-emerged moments later in the crowd, weaving through shepherds of long-time fans and their equally enthralled compatriots, who parted for her like the Red Sea, granting her the hearty New York welcome she’d imagined many fortnights ago.

    Photos by Zachary Giller

And to the dormant insurrected by her dare-to-dream purview, she leaves a ray of light as a parting gift. “For the creatives, do it for the archive first,” she urged, lessons she’s not only learned the hard way but intrinsically, forever embedded in her discography and way of life.

  • In Focus: Tinashe Returns to New York With Sold-Out Brooklyn Paramount Show

R&B sensation Tinashe returned to New York for her second show this year with a dazzling performance at the newly renovated Brooklyn Paramount November 4.

Part of the singer-songwriter’s Match My Freak world tour, the sold-out show followed the release of her seventh studio album Quantum Baby—featuring the viral lead single “Nasty,” which propelled Tinashe to her first solo entry on the Billboard Hot 100 this summer.

    Tinashe

Tinashe’s smooth vocals and expert choreography were as fierce as ever Monday night, as her ever-growing fanbase packed every inch of the 2,700-capacity music hall. After a soulful opening set from Raveena, Tinashe made a confident entrance and kicked off the show with “Getting No Sleep,” the second single from Quantum Baby

    Tinashe

The historic theatre felt more like a vibrant nightclub as fans danced and sang along to Tinashe’s hits like “Needs,” “2 On,” “Gravity,” and more. Backed by a skillful team of dancers, Tinashe never missed a beat as she moved through each precisely choreographed number, complete with unique visual effects for each track. As both a masterful vocalist and a former competitive dancer, Tinashe’s stage presence is magnetic, and the crowd erupted with cheers at nearly every move.

    Tinashe

Even before heading out on the road, Tinashe has had a busy 2024—the release of Quantum Baby amplified her pop notoriety as “Nasty” quickly became a viral sensation. She was also featured on Charli Xcx’s track “B2B” from brat and it’s completely different but also still brat, a remixed companion to one of the most culturally significant albums of the year, as well as “More Than a Little Bit” from Grammy winner Kaytranada’s album Timeless

The Brooklyn Paramount show looked to be an upgrade in production value from Tinashe’s February BB/Ang3l tour stop at Terminal 5, before “Nasty” was released. Virality aside, Tinashe has been hard at work delivering vibrant performances and R&B hits for years, and it seems the public is finally taking notice.

  • Hank Azaria’s Springsteen Tribute Will Hit Brooklyn Ahead of Upcoming 2025 U.S. Tour

Hank Azaria has announced an upcoming Bruce Springsteen tribute tour. Ahead of the upcoming national tour, Azaria will play the Brooklyn Bowl on Nov. 8, as well as Springsteen’s original stomping grounds, The Stone Pony Nov. 15 in Asbury Park.

    Hank Azaria

As a lifelong Springsteen fan the project is a labor of love for Azaria. Perhaps best known for his decades of work on The Simpsons, Azaria has began a new and different undertaking as a voice actor. Azaria spent months creating an impression of Bruce’s distinctive speaking cadence and singing ‘voice’ to conceive the tribute show. As Azaria told Rolling Stone, “I think of it as a theatrical performance,” he says. “I’m staying in character as Bruce even though I’m telling stories about myself. It’s a performance piece, but I’m not a Bruce impersonator.”

At the debut public performance of Hank Azaria and the EZ Street Band, at Le Poisson Rouge, the sold out celebration of The Boss’ music was such a joyful experiance Azaria decided to take the show cross-country. Full details and routing for the tour will be announced soon. Azaria doesn’t simply sing Springsteen’s music, but also speaks on the impact it has had on Azaria’s personal life. “I’ve never worked harder preparing for any role than I did in perfecting a singing vocal impression of Bruce,” said Azaria.

The tribute performance itself is a joyful, full-tilt rock ’n roll event, and Azaria’s physicality and flair are a true homage to Bruce. Azaria channels many familiar components of Bruce Springsteen’s iconography: intimate, irreverent storytelling, connection to family, preternatural stamina, camaraderie with the band, and a palpable love for performing. Azaria has delivered a show we want to root for – invigorating, upbeat and ambitious.

  • Amy Zou, Looi, and T Shan to Perform at The Sultan Room in Brooklyn on November 17

NY-based indie/alternative artists Amy Zou, Looi, and T. Shan are set to perform at The Sultan Room in Brooklyn on November 17.

All three featured artists create indie/alternative music and are based out of New York. Amy Zou is a singer-songwriter, musician, and producer based in Brooklyn. She spent her formative years playing classical piano and flute, before channeling her love for singing, reading, & writing into songwriting. Now, she crafts genre-bending songs, layering in sonic complexity with sometimes cerebral metaphors & fictional worlds into her lyrics. Her upcoming EP I’ve Been Looking For You captures an ambient, avant-pop-leaning sound sieved through an experiential lens of self-discovery. It is a classic hero’s journey turned inward – a search for adventure within the confines of your bedroom, half-remembered dreams, and in the place between decisions.

Raised between China and both coasts of the US, T. Shan’s music blends increasingly wide genre influences united by his biting, confessional lyrics. His music reflects the highs and lows of modern love, yet never loses sight of where he and his family came from.On his latest EP “Flowers & Spice,” released in 2023, T. Shan sought to explore a host of new sonic terrains, from indie rock ballads to house rap dance tracks, all while telling a love story from its blossoming to its post-mortem. Intimate and hectic, saccharine yet bitter, the record braids together reflections of diving headfirst into love while hesitant from the aches of past scars, numbing yourself amidst strobe lights and D&B, and coming to peace with the good and bad of a bygone affection.

    Amy Zou

A singer, songwriter, guitarist, producer, and seasoned performer, Looi is working to release her debut EP — an intergenerational exploration of her Chinese-Malaysian heritage, which exists within the soundscapes of neo-soul, alt-indie, and r&b pop. Her cult following of listeners keeps up with her journey through enchanting performances of unreleased music, private demos, and select public releases. The November 17 show follows the release of her latest single, “Cherries.”

The show begins at 7:00 PM on Sunday November 17. The event is 21+ and tickets are currently at $22. The Sultan Room in Brooklyn is standing room only, with very limited seating available on a first come, first served basis. It is highly recommended arriving early to secure one of the few seats. Each of these artists plan to rock the house in their own unique ways, and the performances are ones you’ll not want to miss.
