  • Bach To Rock and Hurleyville Music Festival – Two Forgotten New York Festivals

After the original Woodstock Music Festival in 1969, there were many people who wanted to replicate the magic of peace, love and rock n roll. But not all future endeavors were destined for success. Two music festivals in particular, the Bach to Rock Festival in 1970 and the Hamlet of Hurleyville Music Festival in 1979, were both little-known festivals in small New York State towns that ultimately failed and were mostly forgotten with the passage of time. Today we look back on these festivals that were doomed from the start.

    The “Bach To Rock” Fiasco

The Bach To Rock Festival was set to take place near the Catskills in Sullivan County in the hamlet of Mountaindale. This was only about 25 miles away from Bethel, NY where Woodstock was first held. It was envisioned as a summer long cultural series with a mixture of opera, broadway music, dance and rock. The promoters hoped to attract 50,000 patrons and host events six days a week from July through August.

The ambitious festival was contentious from the start. After last year’s wild festivities at Woodstock, many locals in Mountaindale were opposed to the sex, drugs and other “unsavory” activities that would likely occur during the event. The disaster at the infamous Altamont festival back in December was still fresh in many minds as well.

Nevertheless, the festival site continued to be developed as a land deal was struck and $250,000 was put into the groundwork. The bill originally boasted acts like Joe Cocker, Grand Funk Railroad, Jethro Tull. However a concert on Randall’s Island that was occurring that same summer left many of the bands legally tied up and unable to perform again in such close proximity.

New bands were booked including the Grateful Dead, Van Morrison and The Band.

Then in early July, days before the start of the festival, a restraining order was issued against the Mountaindale Music Festival, prohibiting large public gatherings. The decision was later upheld on by the Sullivan County Supreme Court, one day before the concert was set to take place.

Promoter Budd Filippo pictured on the festival grounds in Mountaindale. (Photo originally appeared in NY Daily News).

On that day, July 7, the New York Times covered the ruling with an article titled “Court Order Delays Mountaindale Rock Festival.” The Times said the following:

“A borscht circuit of rock musicals that seemed to be developing in the Catskills after last August’s Woodstock Festival suffered a new setback yesterday,” the Times reported, alluding as well to a 54-hour long rock festival that had just concluded, drawing 2,000 people to Saugerties. “A temporary restraining order against the Mountaindale Music and Arts Festival, scheduled to open tonight on its own 700-acre tract in eastern Sullivan County, was upheld by Appellate Justice Michael E. Sweeney.”

But by then over 10,000 people were already on the way to to the small town of Mountaindale. The train was already in motion.

The New York Daily News reported, “Bands of hip mountaineers roamed the Catskills today in a nomadic search for a rock festival that was canceled at the 11th hour by a politician on the other side of the generation gap.”

While the festival was officially canceled, the masses of people threw together a free concert at hotel in South Fallsburg about ten miles from Mountaindale. There were rumors that the Grateful Dead would make an appearance, but besides some local bands the only major act who showed was Richie Havens. Havens had famously been the opener at the original Woodstock festival the year prior.

After the fact, the county’s rulings were upheld in the higher courts establishing a precedent for future mass gatherings, which greatly affected proposals for other music festivals to come.

The Hamlet of Hurleyville Music Festival

Ten years after the original Woodstock, and 9 years after the failed “Bach To Rock”, Sullivan County was once again abuzz with the hopes of music. A three-day festival was set in the Hamlet of Hurleyville with a lineup that included Joni Mitchell, Hall & Oats, Cheap Trick and REO Speedwagon, among others. Promoters expected to sell around 250,000 tickets. Tickets were priced at $37.50 for all three days. There were also plans to make an album and documentary film of the festival.

The hopes with this festival was to kick off a new permanent music venue in the area with the hopes of improving the local economy. The festival was envisioned by a local promoter Leon Greenberg who had previously managed to revitalize the Monticello Raceway.

The plans were covered by the likes of the New York Times.

Previous laws against mass gatherings established in Bach to Rock made a large number of hurdles and many locals were opposed to the festivities. A public relations campaign was launched to turn people’s sentiment, with the tagline “Success is a Traffic Jam,” which appeared on buttons and bumperstickers around town.

Ultimately, Greenberg was unable to sway the tides and the town board voted unanimously to deny a permit. The envisioned music venue which was meant to repurpose the site of the old Columbia Farm Hotel remains unused to this day.

On a positive note, the Hamlet of Hurleyville now hosts an annual Hurleyville Music Festival through the Hurleyville Performing Arts Center which engages local artists and the community in a weekend of arts, music and culture.

  • Phish Return to Bethel Woods on “Tweezer Jets” Bound for Mondegreen

For the third time in their career, Phish performed at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, opening up a three-night run on Friday, August 9. With the remnants of Tropical Storm Debbie making its way through the Mid-Atlantic region and drenching much of New York State over Thursday and Friday, Phish fans planned for the worst and were rewarded for their efforts, with only lingering sprinkles during the show.

    phish bethel

Nearing the end of their Summer Tour with only Bethel, their Mondegreen festival and four nights in Colorado left on their schedule, Phish has been rolling from the Northeast to the Midwest, dropping lengthy jams in unexpected spots, bringing new material to fans off Evolve, and inviting Billy Strings to the stage in Grand Rapids, MI. Now in Bethel, the band has their sites set on building towards their 11th festival, an event always ripe with surprises and leveled up improvisation.

With a pair of ASL interpreters just off stage right, Set 1 began with instrumental (and GRAMMY-nominated) “First Tube,” a rare opener normally found in a late-second set slot, but nevertheless an energetic way to start the show. A lengthy “No Man in No Man’s Land” followed, always a great sign that the band is dialed in and wants to get down to business right away.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QnFL5wdFFg

A spacey and wandering “My Friend, My Friend” was a first set highlight, clocking in at more than 18 minutes and another example of Phish taking more of their catalog down the improv route than in past years. A late first set “2001” was a treat, dipping into an always welcome “Taste” before closing the set with “Character Zero.”

Opening the second set with “The Wedge” could have launched the Rift track to new heights, but it served as a buffer song before the big jam of the night, “Tweezer.” A vehicle for jams in the second set since the 90s, “Tweezer” found a few separate jams (including “There is a Mountain” by Donovan) over the course of 24 minutes, coming full circle before dipping into the Evolve track “Pillow Jets,” which took a dark psychedelic turn mid-way through before returning to “Tweezer,” as one does mid-second set.

Finding its way into “Piper,” this brief “Tweezer” return birthed a top notch “Piper,” found itself turning back into “Tweezer” briefly before the Rolling Stones’ “Shine a Light” provided an exultant breather with the set wrapping up with a thorough “Chalk Dust Torture.” A triple encore featuring songs from across the band’s history was a delightful surprise to the evening, starting with Junta track “Big Black Furry Creature From Mars,” Farmhouse’s “Gotta Jibboo” and Big Boat’s “More.” With two more nights to go, the bar is set for Phish to exceed over this weekend and next.

  • Hozier Plays Sold-Out Show at Bethel Woods for Unreal Unearth Tour

Saturday, July 27 saw Andrew Hozier-Byrne, better known as Hozier, play a sold out show at the historic Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. Hozier is currently touring across North America with opener Allison Russell to celebrate the release of his Unreal Unearth album.

    Hozier, photographed by Sarah Hyun

Hozier, born in Ireland but popular worldwide for his songs, “Take Me to Church” and “Too Sweet,” has made many stops in NY while on tour. He recently played four nights at Forest Hills Stadium in June. Hozier is well known for his powerful voice and honest songwriting, touching on themes of heartbreak, abuse, love, and humanity through his deeply personal and self-aware lyrics.

Fans flocked to the concert in the early afternoon, tailgating with friends and family in white skirts, floral tank tops, and Hozier merchandise. While the majority of people sat on the lawn, those who were lucky enough to snag good seats in the 20 minute period before completely selling out the show sat under the pavilion, with a clear view of Hozier and the stage. During the concert, friends, family, and couples danced freely, truly taking in the night. Hardly any phones were present—people were truly living in the moment.

During his song, “Like Real People Do,” Hozier experienced a guitar malfunction and quickly moved on to the next song on his setlist. He stated, “This is how you know I’m playing live,” followed by a few laughs from him and the crowd. He recognized a familiar face and shared a sweet interaction with the fan, stating, “Is that you? Yeah, yeah! Good to see you again… I love you too.”

Finally, he wrapped up the night with a surprisingly long, yet beautiful encore. He left the stage after “Take Me to Church” and snuck off to a separate makeshift area closer to the people in the nosebleeds, and performed a beautiful rendition of his song, “Cherry Wine.” Fans waved their phone flashlights in the air, looking up in awe, crying, and swaying peacefully to the eclectic music as Hozier entranced the crowd with his gentle vocals and intricate guitar playing.

Finally, to finish off the encore, he stopped to talk to the audience about the current social and political issues affecting the world. Hozier has always been vocal about his support of the LGBTQ+ community and in the importance of voting, protesting, and recognizing the violence that is happening in other countries. He stated, “I’d only like to see Palestine free from occupation, free from violence,” before leading into song, “Nina Cried Power.” Although Hozier does not have any more New York dates scheduled for the rest of his tour, he is sure to return in the future.

A one of a kind venue in the Catskills, Bethel Woods is a non-profit performance venue that is the first of its kind to bring camping facilities to music lovers in this nature. Going to great lengths, Bethel Woods offers a Woodstock-esque experience, where one can see music and later rest in the same fields that made the August 1969 concert a cultural event.

This also addresses one major aspect of the region – the need for more hotel rooms and camping options in the area. What better place than right AT the rural venue?

    Campground

With a range of options in camping, ranging from basic campsite (car or tent), glamping experiences and RVs, the venue also presents programming at the Center, as well as in the campgrounds each day prior to showtime. Stunning views of the Bethel Woods campus and surrounding landscape of the 1969 Woodstock festival site is included with any camping experience. Campers will be less than half a mile from the award-winning Museum at Bethel Woods, whether in Pavilion Camping or Best Road Camping.

  • Hootie & The Blowfish “Summer Camp With Trucks” Tour Pitstops At Bethel Woods

Hugely popular country-rock band, Hootie & The Blowfish touched down in Bethel on Thursday, June 27 during their “Summer Camp With Trucks” tour.

Bethel Woods Center For The Arts is a stone’s throw from the original site of the Woodstock music festival, and joining Hootie & The Blowfish is Collective Soul and Edwin McCain. Collective Soul is celebrating their 30th anniversary and did so by releasing their newest record, Here To Eternity.

As fans were still finding their seats, buying merchandise and beverages, McCain graced the stage. Joining McCain was Larry Chaney on lead guitar with Craig Shields on saxophone and keyboards. The trio had a short set yet prepped the crowd for the rock and roll later in the show. Throughout McCain’s set, he shared stories about his family and laughed with the audience in between songs. Some of his most popular songs like “I’ll Be” and “I Could Not Ask For More,” were received well by the fans. The trio’s chemistry on stage was extremely noticeable while they were on stage.

All the bands were on a tight schedule so Collective Soul hopped quickly on stage. The band blasted into their first song, “Mother’s Love” off their brand new record. The crowd rose to their feet at the start of the set and did not sit until the end of the last song, “Run.” Collective Soul’s style of rock is different than Hootie & The Blowfish’s yet at the same time, complimented each other. It was great to see so many people have equal interest in Collective Soul and Hootie & The Blowfish. The band’s nine-song set was packed with some of their biggest hits. The crowd sang along to every one of the group’s songs.

Collective Soul is fronted by Ed Roland on lead vocals and acoustic guitar. Joining Ed is his brother Dean Roland and Jesse Triplett on guitars. Will Turpin was on bass and Johnny Rabb on drums.

Collective Soul has always been a great band and their stage presence is unmatched. All of their songs are catchy and their legion of fans brought their singing voice with them. As the band started a cover of AC/DC’s Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, McCain ran on stage to help sing. This brought a loud cheer from the audience. “December,” off the band’s self-titled record was the second to last song played but was the fan favorite. The fans that sat down immediately stood up and took out their phones to record the tune.

With the sun now dipping behind the general admission lawn, the stage quickly was turned over. Hootie & The Blowfish’s road crew did a swift and efficient job at getting the gear all set and ready to go. Before anyone could get a new beer, 001: A Space Odyssey’s theme song was blasted into the set and the house lights dimmed.

Hootie & The Blowfish jumped into a cover of 54-40’s “I Go Blind” as the first song. Like Collective Soul, fans in the lower section remained on their feet for the entire 23-song set. The energy from the crowd was soaked up by the band as they had smiles on their face from the first note till the last.

The band is led by singer and guitarist Darius Rucker. Joining Rucker is Mark Bryan on lead guitar, Dean Felber on bass and Jim Sonefeld on drums. In addition to the quartet are touring musicians Gary Greene, Garry Murray and Lee Turner.

With the temperature dropping below the 60s, the cooler weather didn’t deter the band or fans. The rock-infused country style made fans feel right at home at the site of “peace and love.” Throughout the band’s set, they sprinkled in a ton of covers including “For What It’s Worth” by Buffalo Springfield, “Hey, Hey What Can I Do” by Led Zeppelin and “Solitude” by McCain. The latter even saw McCain, yet again, grace the stage to perform the song. The cheers for McCain were louder than the other two times. The band did a great job at adding their own twists to some of those classic covers and made some of the songs the memorable tunes of the evening.

The team that was mixing the band’s sound was at the top of their game. The band overall sounded great. No member was louder than the other, they were just perfect. Behind the band was a spectacular video screen with top-notch graphics of live video and different animations. It was amazing to see different animations of campfires and big trees displaying different color lights to the audience.

It’s difficult to not play the famous tune “Wagon Wheel” for Rucker and fans got their money’s worth when that song was played towards the back half of the set. Fans screamed at the top of their lungs and embraced their friends and partners. This tune has become a favorite among music lovers and it was a great song to hear live, it sent chills down the spines of fans across the amphitheater.

With the band in full command of the stage – and one shoeless Bryan – the band weaved in and out of covers and original material before the end of the set. The final song before the set was over was “Hold My Hand,” off of 1994’s Cracked Rear View and, like “Wagon Wheel,” people embraced each other as the band waved goodbye.

It wasn’t until the three-song encore started that more thunderous cheers were heard. “Go and Tell Him (Soup Song)” was the first song up to bat before a cover of Stone Temple Pilots’ “Interstate Love Song” was played. The STP song was one of the best songs and covers played that evening. Rucker’s vocals were on course with original singer, Scott Weiland and the rest of the band followed his lead.

Of course, “Only Wanna Be With You” was the very last song of the evening and while fans were slowly filing out of the crowd and into the cold night, there was not one negative word said. The crowd loved the entire show and it was all they could talk about as they left the amphitheater.

Hootie & The Blowfish’s “Summer Camp With Trucks” tour has two more dates left. On September 5, they will be in Long Island and on September 6 they will be in Syracuse. This is truly a show you do not want to miss, it’s spectacular in every sense of the word.

I’m excited to see Mudvayne, and All That Remains…” Dave added.

Megadeth’s North American tour comes on the heels of a highly anticipated and successful stint in Latin America which wrapped this month and will later start back up in Europe this summer. With stops in Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil and México and forthcoming dates in Sweden, Italy, France, Germany and more, the band’s global appeal and lasting impact is more apparent than ever as continued calls for international touring are demanded.
