  • Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival Announces 2024 Lineup

The 22nd annual Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival has announced its artist lineup for 2024. The all-day free concert will feature five live acts on September 14.

    Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival poster

Since its start in 2002, the Riverfront Jazz Festival has been a staple of Albany’s live music scene. Each year, the festival has featured legends of jazz music and highlighted local up-and-comers, providing a vast array of sounds for audiences. The 2024 event will likewise feature jazz artists from across the country, each sharing their unique take on the genre.

The first artist to perform is Bright Dog Red at 12:30pm. The Albany-based jazz rap octet has made waves for their unique genre blending. Their sound mixes improvisational jazz in the vein of Ornette Coleman and Mahavishnu Orchestra with 90s hip-hop. The group’s socio-politically charged lyricism has drawn comparisons with legendary acts like A Tribe Called Quest and Digable Planets. Glide Magazine describes the group as  “Genre-agnostic, uncategorizable, and intensely thrilling.”

Following up the first performance is a set by Melanie Charles at 2:00pm. The Brooklyn-based musician has gained traction for her blending of jazz, R&B, and soul. Following a 2021 NPR Tiny Desk Concert, Charles was propelled further into the mainstream. In the past years, she has collaborated with everyone from Gorillaz to Mach Hommy. Her music, while heavily indebted to jazz, looks to the future of the genre. She said “I love jazz, I really fell in love with it deeply. But I was interested in young people interacting with it.”

Third-up is the Philadelphia-based septet Snacktime. The group first made a name for themselves playing free shows in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square, with their shows soon growing to sold-out concerts across the country. Their sound combines jazz, funk, punk, and more, creating songs that sound like no one else. Since their start, they have gained endorsements from Portugal. The Man and celebrities like Eric Andre and the Impractical Jokers. This performance comes in the leadup to their studio debut recorded by GRAMMY-nominated producer Will Yip. Snacktime’s set will begin at 3:30pm.

Following these performances is a presentation of the 8th annual Henry Johnson Award for Community Service. The ceremony is set for 4:30 pm with performances resuming at 5:00pm. At this point, Roosevelt Collier will perform a set, exhibiting his pedal steel guitar prowess. Since his start, Collier has performed alongside legends like the Allman Brothers Band and Los Lobos. In 2017, Collier launched his all-star band the “get-downs,” combining gospel, funk, rock, and more.

The final performance of the night comes from Nate Smith at 6:30pm. Hailing from Chesapeake, Virginia, Smith is a composer, drummer, and producer all in one. His emotional and raw style of drumming has brought collaborations with countless artists. Everyone from Norah Jones to Pat Metheny has sought out Smith for his percussion chops. Across his studio albums and collaborations, Smith has received three Grammy nominations. In recent years, his viral videos have introduced millions to Smith’s drumming, making him one of the most influential of this generation.

The Riverfront Jazz Festival is scheduled for Saturday, September 14th at Jenning’s Landing in Albany. The all-day free festival is an all-ages event, featuring music, food, beverages, and local vendors. For more information, visit the Albany Office of Cultural Affairs website here.

  • In Focus: The Crane Wives Flock to Albany

The Crane Wives, a four-piece indie band hailing from Grand Rapids, Michigan, took the stage at Lark Hall in Albany, for a sold-out show that resonated with energy, uniqueness and charm.

Opening for The Crane wives was American performer, composer and guitarist, Yasmin Williams from northern Virginia who landed on the Billboard Heatseekers chart with her debut album, 2018’s Unwind and released her second album, Urban Driftwood, to widespread critical acclaim in 2021.

    Yasmin Williams

Founded in 2010, The Crane Wives, composed of Emilee Petersmark (guitar/vocals), Kate Pillsbury (guitar/vocals), Dan Rickabus (drums/vocals), and Ben Zito (bass), has been weaving their unique sound through the fabric of the indie music scene, which makes their ever-growing popularity compelling to witness live.

From the moment the lights dimmed and the opening notes of “Queen of Nothing” filled the room, it was clear that the audience was in for a night to remember. The Crane Wives’ upbeat sound is infectious; they expertly blend folk influences with catchy melodies, creating an atmosphere that had even the most reserved attendees mesmerized and dancing to the rhythm. The use of three-part harmonies is particularly noteworthy, allowing them to create a textured sound that sets them apart from the myriad of other indie rock outfits. Songs like “Queen of Nothing” set the tone for the evening, transitioning seamlessly into the rest of their impressive 17-song setlist which was finished up with an encore of “Scars” and “The Hand That Feeds.”

The lyrics penned by the band are often deeply introspective, tackling themes that many of their dedicated listeners can relate to, yet they are always delivered with an upbeat musicality that defies the weight of the words. This juxtaposition between lyrical depth and energetic rhythm is what makes The Crane Wives so captivating; it’s a celebration of life, even in the face of hardships that connects their music to their ever growing fan base.

Throughout the concert, it was evident that The Crane Wives prioritize creating a sense of community within their fans. Their engagement with the audience was sincere and heartfelt. Between songs, the brief banter flowed effortlessly, allowing for moments of connection. This warm approach made the sold-out venue feel intimate and welcoming, as if you were sharing the experience with friends rather than watching a performance from a distance.

As the night unfolded, the crowd danced, sang along, and echoed the band’s harmonies, creating an exhilarating sense of unity. With the anticipation of their upcoming album, Beyond Beyond Beyond, set to release on September 6.

The Crane Wives at Lark Hall was not just a concert; it was an immersive experience that combined exceptional musicianship with a passionate connection with their fans. If their performance is any indication, the band’s trajectory is set to rise even higher.

With their ability to captivate audiences and create a vibrant community around them, The Crane Wives are poised for an even brighter future, and one can only hope there will be more opportunities to enjoy their lively and poignant music in concert.

  • An Evening With Nas at Albany’s Palace Theatre

Amidst a slew of tour dates, Nas made a stop at Albany’s Palace Theatre this past Friday (July 19) and delivered an all-encompassing performance. In turn, the normally quiet-kept streets surrounding the Palace felt a simultaneous murmur between 7 and 8 p.m. on Friday night as hip hop fans came out in droves in support of Esco.

With both floors of the Palace decked out, the legendary rhymer offered a passionate rendition of his biggest hits, album cuts and freestyles.

    An evening with Nas
Nas performs “Fever,” the opening track from Magic 3

Backed by longtime tour DJ and friend, Rochester’s own DJ Green Lantern, Nas offered fans a non-linear run through his historic discography. In truth, An Evening With Nas, gave the feel of a distant family gathering. As though Nas was kickin’ it with his hip hop cousins from Upstate.

The crowd’s appreciation was apparent as the 17-time Grammy-nominee was on the receiving end of the night’s first standing ovation within the first 20 minutes, after a flawless, passionate performance of “N.Y. State of Mind.” Green Lantern played to the lively crowd, riling them up with chants of “hip hop, hip hop,” before dropping the iconic DJ Premier scratches preluding “Nas Is Like” as the crowd roared their approval.

    Nas receives standing ovation

Similarly, performances of “Got Ur Self A…,” “Made You Look,” and “You Owe Me” all earned the crowd’s approval. Yet, the most well-received songs are the ones that capture Nas’ soulful essence. For instance, performances of “Life’s a Bitch,” “The World Is Yours” and “If I Ruled the World” had the crowd hung on every word, particularly the latter two which led to a theatre-wide serenade.

Such was the scene as a noticeably vibrant Esco basked in he and the crowd’s shared catharsis. Afterwards, in a moment of reflection over his long-career, the hip hop mogul thanked his long-time supporters and encouraged the vivacious crowd of about 1500 to “live vicariously through me. I’m still outside.”

    Memorable Moments

During this period of elation DJ Green Lantern upped it and announced a Nas and DJ Premier album slated for later this year. As the show waned, Nas honored both Prodigy and The Notorious B.I.G with special renditions dedicated to both fallen legends.

A large image of Prodigy appeared on the big-screen as he performed his verse on their classic hit, “It’s Mine.” He later shouted out Biggie before performing a special rendition of “One Love” over the “Sky’s The Limit” beat. Meanwhile a rendition of “Daughters” was cut short as Nas claimed it made him emotional, before transitioning to the more rugged “40-16 Building.” The show closed as the Queens native gave an impassioned performed “One Mic” to applause and shouts not to leave.

On Thursday, July 11, Hip Hop legend KRS-One electrified the crowd at Jennings Landing in Albany, part of the Alive at Five summer concert series. The show, packed with classic hits and vibrant energy, showcased KRS-One’s enduring influence in the Hip Hop world, creating an unforgettable experience for fans.

Opening for KRS was fellow Bronx native DJ Show, who got the crowd hyped by spinning some Hip Hop classics and getting the crowd dancing. He made it clear that if a track was made after 2010, he wasn’t playing it tonight.

Albany-based artist Ohzhe took the stage next. The 2024 Eddies Award nominee continued to excite the audience with his charismatic and energetic stage presence.

Ohzhe’s set ended with him hollering backstage to KRS-One, who was talking with fans behind the stage, asking if he wanted him to keep performing. This prompted KRS to join him on stage for an impromptu freestyle collaboration, illustrating why The Source called KRS “the greatest live emcee ever.”

The crowd roared as KRS-One delivered powerful performances of his classics, interspersed with insightful commentary, reinforcing his status as “Hip Hop’s first Master Teacher.”  Near the end of the show, KRS and his crew brought out autographed tennis balls to throw into the audience. Giving some lucky fans a memento that will solidify this performance as unforgettable.

KRS-One’s show ended on a high note, with the crowd buzzing about the evening’s performances and some admiring their tennis balls as they left Jennings Landing. Conceived almost by accident when someone backstage at Biscoland 2023 suggested the idea of getting everyone named ‘Brownstein’ together to form a supergroup, less than a year later, that pipe dream has become a full-fledged reality. Consisting of the Disco Biscuits bassist Marc Brownstein and his son Zach Brownstein on drums, the band also features Eggy bandmates Jake Brownstein on guitar and Dani Battat on keyboards.

Now collectively known as The Brownstein Family Band, the high-profile side project blazed a trail over the Northeast with four shows that will have people talking for years to come.

Dysfunktone kicked things off at Lark Hall on 6/28/24.

Opening the night at Lark Hall with an energetic set full of groove-based improv was Long Island rockers Dysfunktone. Commanding your attention from the opening riffs, the impressive young quartet dazzled with proficiency and technicality.  Made up of Rob Meza on guitar and keys, Alex Gallina on bass, Brandon Hanna on guitar, and Dakota Henry on drums, the band wasted no time going dank and deep.

After kicking off with a 14-minute rendition of “Strawberry Cough,” Dysfunktone easily won the crowd over with stellar versions of “Medusa’s Myth,” “Circadian Rhythms,” and an epic 18 minute ride through “Feelin’ Time” that contained clear Aqueous teases throughout. A band that is destined to become a force in the Northeast jam scene for years to come, be sure to keep an eye out for them and thank us later. After a brief intermission, the Brownstein Family Band soon assembled on stage around 9:30pm.

Properly paying homage to a mutual musical hero, Jerry Garcia, the Brownstein Family Band opened their set with colorful cover of “Let It Rock.”  Setting the tone for the exciting evening to come, Steve Miller Band’s “Take the Money and Run” would give way to the first original song of the set in Eggy’s “One Stop Shop.” Pausing for a moment to address the audience, Marc Brownstein (AKA Brownie) would claim the Lark Hall crowd was the most welcoming and energetic so far on this run. Peering at them through a pair of gnarly green shades, he’d go on to say that because “they were having so much fun, they’re going to ditch the set break and keep the jams flowing.”

Dropping back into the music with the beloved Disco Biscuits original “M.E.M.P.H.I.S.” the band seamlessly dithered into the psychedelic territory of the Beatles classic “Tomorrow Never Know” with vocals courtesy of keyboardist Dani (pronounced Donny) Battat. The crowd got extra excited for its follow up, another cherished Jerry Garcia tune, “Cats Under the Stars.”

Providing a perfect platform for Eggy’s axe-man Jake to show off his incredible chops, the song effortlessly segued into the timeless “Tangled Up in Blue” which had everyone singing along in unison.

Another Eggy original tune was up next in the form of “All Wheel’s Turnin’,” before the Brownstein Family Band surprised us all with a cover of Donovan’s “Barabajagal.”  Pausing once again for a few words, Brownie would speak from the heart, commenting how great it was to be playing with these young and hungry lions, while also acknowledging just how great of songwriters Jake and Dani really are.

Like any proud dad, he would also give major props to his son, Zach, for holding it down on the drum kit, watching him not only grow into a great drummer, but a professional one and noting that it’s “a true joy to be sharing the stage with him.” The sappy sentiment continued next with an emotional rendition of the Grateful Dead’s “They Love Each Other” that had all the feels and was perhaps the overall highlight of the night.  After “Confrontation” left Lark Hall begging for more, the band would return to the stage for one final tune.

With things going so well, Dani would joke about how their still trying to figure out a way to have some Brownstein family drama. Marc would quickly interject and say, “We’re only 4 show in. It’s coming.  Believe me, I’ve been around for a long time. The drama is coming and this song is our redemption.”  The Brownstein Family Band would then close the show with an emphatic and euphoric rendition of the Eggy original “Golden Gate Dancer,” bringing another stellar night of music at Lark Hall to a memorable close.

After wrapping up this brief run of shows the following night in Bridgeport, CT, it’s unknown when the Brownstein Family Band will perform their next gig.

With The Disco Biscuits set to host their second annual Biscoland in LaFayette’s Wonderland Forest over the 4th of July holiday and Eggy heading west to make their Red Rocks debut and play a handful of high profile festivals through the month of July, it’s shaping up to be a busy summer ahead for both of these talented and charismatic bands. What we do know for certain is that when this fun loving collaboration happens again, you don’t want to miss it.
