  • TV On The Radio Announce Special ‘Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes’ 20th Anniversary Edition

Brooklyn-based band TV On The Radio has announced a 20th anniversary edition of their critically acclaimed debut album, Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes, featuring five bonus tracks to be released on November 15, in addition to a return to live performance to celebrate.

Desperate Youth Bloodthirsty Babes TV on the radio

Composed of Tunde Adebimpe, Dave Sitek, Kyp Malone, and Jaleel Bunton, TV on the Radio has developed a reputation that precedes them over their past twenty-plus years as a rock band. Recognized for their eclectic sound and experimental attitude, the band has toured worldwide, collaborated with countless household names, and released a total of five studio albums among a plethora of singles. An act of rebellion by simply existing as a Black indie rock band and a force of sonic exploration, TV on the Radio is truly not to be missed.

Now, just over twenty years since their debut album, TV on the Radio is returning to the public eye for a celebratory re-release of Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes, featuring five bonus tracks, two of which are unreleased. The first, “Final Fantasy,”  is out now  and is an early demo of their song “Bomb Yourself.”

Recognized by Rolling Stone as “an immaculate album about disappointment in all its forms” and featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, TV on the Radio’s first album release had made its mark on the world from the start. Saturated with concepts of life, love, and loss through the lens of post-9/11 America and heavy with the tension felt by the youngest generations at the time, Desperate Youth puts visceral emotions into words and words into never-before-heard sound.

In addition to the exciting rerelease, TV on the Radio has announced their first shows since 2019, with multiple nights in New York City at the historic Webster Hall. The band will be in the city on November 25, 26, 29, and 30, with dates in Los Angeles and London to follow. While still a part of the band, member Dave Sitek will be unable to join the tour. Tickets will be on sale Thursday, September 12 at 10:00 AM local time- for more information, visit here

When speaking on the release, Grogan states “We like putting out EP’s because we feel we can get the attention of the listener and keep it for fifteen minutes or so.” This holds true as Tabula Rasa’s four tracks clock in at fourteen minutes. The EP was both recorded and mixed by Jeff Aderman at Big Blue North Recording Studio in Utica.

Tabula Rasa tackles themes of life, uncertainty, change and relationships to a backdrop of alternative rock fused with aspects of punk and psychedelia. They cite bands like The Who, The Cure, Genesis, The Replacements and Tragically Hip as some of their main influences. This alternative influence combined with their imaginative lyricism mesh to create the distinct sound that is Maybe Sunday.

Electric funk group SunSquabi and rock band Doom Flamingo will be performing a co-headlining show at the Putnam Place in Saratoga Springs on September 14, both with 90 minute sets.

    Doom Flamingo SunSquabi

Bands Doom Flamingo and SunSquabi are teaming up for this double bill show Saturday, September 14. Both incredible performers in their own right, the show is sure to be a sonic adventure.

The first of two acts for the evening, Doom Flamingo is self-described as “80’s guilty pleasure vampire stripper rock.” Forming through friendships and previous collaborations, the band boasts a multitude of sounds and skills. With an energy that channels Miami Beach poolside lounges and the eerie sounds of old John Carpenter films, Doom Flamingo has carved their own corner of the music world out in the ever-admirable intent of simply making people dance.

The second act of the evening, SunSquabi has made it a habit to bend the rules of genre and sound to their own will. Best described as an “Electronic Hydro Funk Experience”, SunSquabi offers a unique live performance experience with their improvisational works that are performed so seamlessly it almost feels rehearsed. It’s no wonder why their shows are described as an atmospheric trip through space.

  • Unreleased Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young “Live at the Fillmore East” Hits in October

Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young’s 1969 Live at the Fillmore East performances are set to release this October as a double live album. The album boasts recordings from the group’s 1969 concert at the Fillmore East in NYC.

Crosby Stills Nash and Young Fillmore East

A newly discovered multi-track recording of the band’s September 20, 1969, concert at the historic Fillmore East in New York City captures an early moment from that first tour is releasing as a double live album on October 25.

Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young were heavily involved in the creation of this never-before-heard live show. Stills and Young compiled and mixed the original eight-track concert recordings at Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles.

The album was recorded only a month after Woodstock. The concert was the band’s fourth in two days at the Fillmore East and featured both acoustic and electric sets. The setlist spotlights soon-to-be classics from CSN’s self-titled debut and Young’s Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” “Helplessly Hoping,” and “Down By The River” to name a few.

Stills delivers a stunning solo acoustic performance of his introspective ballad “4 + 20.” Nash follows, alone at the organ, singing “Our House” to its inspiration, Joni Mitchell, who was in the Fillmore audience.

“Hearing the music again after all these years, I can tell how much we loved each other and loved the music that we were creating. We were four people reveling in the different sounds we were producing, quietly singing together on the one hand, then rocking like f**k for the rest of the concert.”

    Graham Nash

The electric set is powerful and intense, highlighted by expansive versions of “Wooden Ships,” “Long Time Gone,” and “Sea Of Madness.” The band closes the show with “Find The Cost Of Freedom.” This song by Stills would later be released as the B-side to the protest anthem “Ohio.”

  • Grateful Dead Tribute All-Drag Band “BERTHA” Embarks On First Tour

Grateful Dead tribute and LGBTQ+ benefit band BERTHA has announced her first ever tour across the United States, “BERTHA DOES AMERICA”. The tour will begin on September 12 at the Brooklyn Bowl.

    bertha

The world’s first all-drag Grateful Dead tribute band, BERTHA is a powerhouse of a performance. Founded in Nashville after their state legislature passed bans on public drag and trans youth healthcare, every show BERTHA plays is a benefit for LGBTQ+ causes, creating community and solidarity between the local drag and live music scenes.

An absolute love letter to both their namesake and the queer community, BERTHA is a conglomerate of drag artists with a core set of performers but no concrete lineup. There is a rotating lineup with special guest Berthas, seasoned Berthas, and every Bertha inbetween. Founding members include singer for bluegrass band Front Country Melody Walker, former member of the duo Smooth Hound Smith Doyle, Jacob Groopman, Lindsay Lou, Alex Bice, Thomas Bryan Eaton, Kyle Tuttle, and Milly Racoon.

Regardless of how long a particular artist has been a Bertha, the band is a collective with two things in mind- the Grateful Dead and raising money for LGBTQ+ causes. This unique set of priorities has led to a growth in the overlap between Grateful Dead fans and members of the queer community, fostering a rather unique and enthusiastic audience attitude towards both the performances themselves and the larger causes they support.

This exciting tour will open on September 12 at the Brooklyn Bowl, followed by nine other dates across the country. For tickets and further information on the Brooklyn date, please visit here

  • Troy Indie Group The Belle Curves Release Genre-Blending Album “Subject to Change”

Troy-based indie rock band The Belle Curves release their new album titled Subject to Change which blends Americana and rock.

    the belle curves

The Belle Curves is the primary creative vehicle for Troy-based songwriter Delaney Hafener. The group focuses on an indie sound but with a folky, americana twist. Their latest record Subject to Change displays a variety of the group’s sounds and abilities.

The opening track “Hand Rolled” is a soft rock tune with a classic sound, but still maintaining their roots with modern indie themes. The next track “Life in the Hinterlands” bolts out of the gate with a roadtrippin’ americana feel. It certainly has a country twang and still holds the indie sound close. Delaney’s voice is dynamic, with high highs and low lows. Her abilities speak for themself throughout this album. The track “Sister” really showcases the power in the softness of Delaney’s vocals.

The track “The Process” in particular caught my attention quite soon during the first play. The track progresses wonderfully from lowkey to fierce and powerful. It then concludes in such an angelic and completing way with the vocals and instruments coming to a head followed by a fade out.

For more information on The Belle Curves and their upcoming album Subject to Change visit their Bandcamp by clicking here.
