Shrines, the moniker of Brooklyn-based singer and musician Carrie Erving, self-released a new EP, Seasons, on October 18. The release was celebrated with a show at Brooklyn’s C’mon Everybody several days later on October 23.
Shrines (Credit: Shrines)
Labelled loosely perhaps as art pop, any effort at finding a straightforward pidgeon-hole for this work are likely to be confounded. In “Infinite Spring” (the EP’s opener) for example, what begins as brooding and operatic quickly finds itself morphed into rocky and club-adjacent.
Seasons, produced by Rosana Cabán (Psychic Twin, Cosas Cosas), spans four songs exploring the fragility of the individual seasons. At turns reflective, poppy and celebratory, Seasons documents the collective cognitive dissonance of the fluctuations between celebration and trepidation that arise while living in a time of rapidly escalating climate change. This may feel particularly relevant to those enjoying the 80 degree late-October heatwave.
The highlight of this work is Erving’s voice. One part classical vibrato, one part pop incantation, Shrines’ singing is given room to breathe with very little manipulation. A hint of reverb is applied just at the right moments to draw out some of the music’s spookiness.
In Seasons, Shrines’ lyrics suggest that allowing ourselves to savor the present moment may be one of the keys to grappling with the larger challenges of our time. Shrines’ new single and video, “Witch Season,” is her homage to spooky season. With lyrics drawing from themes in Irish traditional folklore, “Witch Season” explores getting lost in the woods, immersing oneself in the unknown, and reconnecting with one’s own wild nature, as the music crescendos into a mysterious, Stevie Nicks coded fever-dream.
Drawing comparisons to Björk and Sinead O’Connor, Shrines skillfully weaves influences of pop, electronic music, indie rock, and Irish sean-nós (traditional ‘old style’ Irish singing) into her music, delivering shimmering art-pop that The New York Times described as ‘spellbinding.’
On a crisp fall day full of anticipation for Phish’s return to Albany, a mist hung over the pre-show festivities with the news of the passing of Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh. The chatter of whether this would be noted or honored by Phish – when, and how – was debated by fans gathered around South Pearl from Beaver St. to Hudson Ave.
Those conversations were quickly put to rest with the opening notes of “Box of Rain,” Phish’s first ever performance of the Lesh and Robert Hunter penned tune, and the first time for the four members to cover the Grateful Dead in more than 26 years (not including Bob Weir’s 2016 Nashville sit-in)
And with that, the show was off and running. Following the emotional “Box of Rain,” Phish dropped “The Moma Dance” into a traditional second slot, followed by a boisterous “Free.” The flow was set early with this trio of tunes as the first three-night Phish run in Albany was underway.

A mellowing “Dirt” gave way to “Wolfman’s Brother,” which Lesh notably performed a stellar version with Phish in April 1999 at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco. “No Man in No Man’s Land” and a deep “Theme From the Bottom” filled in next, with “Steam” and “Sand” closing the first set.
Setlist art by Coventry Phish
The second set began just before 10pm with a nearly 10 minute “Blaze On” (9:59 to be exact), giving way to the one of the biggest jams of the night in “Piper,” with a “Carol of the Bells” tease in “Piper” bringing Christmas a little early to the Capital Region.

Segueing from a steady “Piper” jam into “Light,” the second set vehicle of “Tweezer” kept the improv-heavy set flowing, dipping into “The Wedge,” and a pair of songs perfect for Halloween, “The Howling” and “Monsters.” And while “Backwards Down the Numberline” could have closed the set, a fan on the rail very likely influenced the closing rocker found in “Carini.”

An encore that kept the show rolling close to midnight began with “Sleeping Monkey,” the first in more than two years. Just when you think they’d wrap things up with “Tweezer Reprise,” the opening riffs of “Ghost” appeared, pushing the expected encore into the realm of the unexpected, finally seguing into “Tweeprise,” just as Freddie Freeman ended Game 1 of the World Series with a grand slam. Not the ending Yankees fans wanted, but a celebration nonetheless for Phish fans in Albany or home on the couch.

The Mountain Jam music festival and Catskills cultural cornerstone will officially return in June of 2025, just in time for its 20th anniversary.
A vivid and expansive music festival, Mountain Jam has held a reputation for its dedication to live music across the sound spectrum since its beginnings in 2005. Born as a celebration of the Radio Woodstock radio station’s 25th anniversary, Mountain Jam has developed year after year from a single-day event of about 3,000 attendees total to a multi-day event drawing in over 40,000 attendees- earning the fest the moniker of the largest rock and camping festival in the entire Northeast.
Despite the increasingly large numbers, Mountain Jam has never strayed from what made it such a fan favorite- the sense of intimacy and community found within the festival grounds. Familiar headliners and rising stars alike would tuck themselves away in the picturesque mountains of the Catskills for days at a time alongside rotating food vendors and interactive activities that gave Mountain Jam their impressive yet down to earth reputation.
Originally housed at the Hunter Mountain Ski Resort for its picturesque views and natural amphitheater environment, the Jam made the move to the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the original stomping grounds of the original Woodstock Festival, in 2019 to commemorate Woodstock’s historic 50th anniversary.
Bella’s Bartok
With names like Andy Frasco & The U.N., alt-J, Jack Johnson, Gov’t Mule, and Twiddle under their belts already, Mountain Jam’s 2020 line up was to be a hard hitter. The likes of Brandi Carlile, Grace Potter, Sammy Rae & the Friends, and more were meant to join the ranks of Mountain Jam alumnus- but, as with most live music that year, plans were put to a halt as COVID-19 kept folks at home.
Since the cancellation in late March of 2020, news on Mountain Jam’s return has been few and far between, with little more than a tentative delay announcement to reference in 2022.
However, in an exciting 25-second video announcement uploaded just days ago to the festival’s official website and social media, Mountain Jam has been triumphantly declared as “Alive in ‘25”. Described as “better than ever,” the 2025 Mountain Jam festival will be hosted at Belleayre Mountain once more from June 20-22.
While no details on featured acts or further information is currently available, there’s no doubt there’s more to come. To keep up to date on the latest from Mountain jam, visit their website here.

New Orleans-based funk-fusion band The Soul Rebels have announced an upcoming show at Anderson Center at Binghamton University.
The Soul Rebels started with an idea – to expand upon the pop music the members loved on the radio and the New Orleans brass tradition they grew up on. They took that tradition and blended funk and soul with elements of hip hop, jazz and rock, all within the style of a modernized and contemporary brass band. The band has built a career around an eclectic live show that harnesses the power of horns and drums in a party-like atmosphere.
The Anderson Center for the Performing Arts welcomes this captivating performance style to Binghamton University on November 1. The Soul Rebels are riding high in 2024 after receiving national attention following the release of their new album, Poetry In Motion. Their explosive stage presence has led to live collaborations with the likes of Katy Perry, Nas, G-Eazy, DMX, Robin Thicke, Macy Gray, and most notably their new supergroup with the legendary Wu Tang Clan.
Tickets for the general public range from $25-40, with a 10% discount on premium seats for seniors, veterans, and Binghamton University faculty/staff and alumni. Student and child tickets cost just $10 for any seat in the house. This show is one you’ll certainly want to be a part of. The group’s unmatched performance energy is something that sticks with you for a while.
