  • Goose Announce new Drummer, “Ted Tapes 2024,” Headline Tour Stopping at CMAC and Forest Hills

It is an exciting day to be a Goose fan as the rock quintet has announced they are bringing new drummer Cotter Ellis to the group, releasing Ted Tapes 2024, an album comprised of instrumental improvisations captured during Ellis’s auditions on drums. And if that wasn’t enough, the group kicks off their new headliner tour this summer, coming to CMAC on June 15 and Forest Hills Stadium on June 29.

    Goose by Zak Radik.

Goose released their debut album in 2016 and quickly took flight, playing countless shows, and amassing a cult-like following. Known for their unique brand of irresistible songcraft, fluid musicianship, and spirited improvisational performance, the quintet’s 2022 critically acclaimed record Dripfield debuted at #2 on Billboard’s “Top New Artist Albums” chart.

They have spent much of the past decade on a seemingly infinite tour schedule that includes sold-out headline shows at renowned venues such as Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Nashville, TN’s Ryman Auditorium, and New York City’s hallowed Radio City Music Hall; a sold-out co-headline run alongside Trey Anastasio Band; a sold-out EU/UK headline tour, and show-stealing appearances at such festivals as Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Newport Folk Festival, Electric Forest, and Dead & Company’s Playing In The Sand in Riviera Cancun, MX. Recent highlights include a sold-out, five-night run at the historic Capitol Theater and 2023’s 10th annual Goosemas holiday celebration at Hampton, VA’s famed Hampton Coliseum.

“I first saw Cotter play with his band Swimmer at Nectar’s some years ago,” says Rick Mitarotonda. “I was sitting solo at one of the bar tables right in front of the stage with the PA ripping. The set was awesome, they’re all fantastic players and I was taken with the buoyant energy and how much fun they were having. Something had me glued to the drums though. His pocket and feel were gripping. He really told a story with his playing that night. It was an experience that always stuck with me.”

These Ted Tapes tracks are improvisational moments from the first few sessions with Cotter, recorded solely for the purpose of reference, not intended for any kind of release. The instruments and microphones were rigged up quickly, and the playing was raw and free from any expectations. The first track, “Leo,” is the opening pick up jam from the first session, the first notes ever played together. There were some consistent threads we all felt in the room throughout these early sessions; ease of communication, freely flowing ideas, and a feeling of effortlessness moving through different zones. We experienced a patience that allowed all of our personalities to come out and energy to well up in new ways. It feels like a door just beginning to open. We couldn’t be more stoked for what’s to come.

  • Ready To Go: Fungkshui and Quantum Cosmic Blast Off in Albany

Shooting for the moon with infinite potential, Asbury Parks’ next big thing is Fungkshui. Not stopping there, they may also be the next big thing in the Capital Region too. With frequent visits to the area, including recent high octane rock performances at Putnam Place and the Rye Bread Music Festival (RFB), the fun-loving psychedelic prog-funk quintet is quickly and consistently earning high praise from high people in high places.

    Fungkshui Quantum Cosmic

Whether Fungkshui (pronounced funk shway) are playing to packed clubs along the boardwalks of New Jersey, or randomly stopping in for an unannounced happy hour improv set at The Eleven, it seems the band has found their ‘home away from home’ at Albany’s Lark Hall. As friendly with their staff as they are with their fans, Fungkshui originally made a good first impression at the hall last March while opening for acclaimed avant-garde jazz trio LaMP. Later returning for “Funk Night” with the E-Block in September, NYS Music was there for the for their most recent throwdown on Thursday, January 25th.

    Fungkshui Quantum Cosmic

Teaming up with sonic astrological improv jammers Quantum Cosmic, a new experimental side project featuring members of Annie in the Water, Raisinhead and The Switch, the dynamic pairing of bands proved to be the perfect combination of good vibes and good times. On a night full of other-worldly jams, technical proficiency, soaring and sublime guitar solos, guest sit-ins, and enough funk to make you want to float around the room and dance with total strangers, both bands turned in peak performances that you ‘outta be kicking yourself for missing.

Blasting off a little later than the advertised 8pm start, Quantum Cosmic quickly made up for lost time by inviting the audience to help telepathically guide them through their all-improvised set. Encouraging listeners to share their positive and creative thoughts as well as birthday wishes to drummer Joshua West, “Just hopefully you’re not a dick about it, ” joked guitarist Michael Lashomb, who also plays with the ever-busy West in Annie in the Water.

Along with Matt Richards on keys, Raisinhead guitarist Ted Grey and bassist James Woods, the band who hasn’t played the same show twice and gambles on “making it up as they go along’ would surprise everyone by also inviting up fellow Annie in the Water/Space Carnival bassist Chris Meier for a memorable trippy dip on the AITW OG staple “The River,” in which the birthday boy West hilariously changed (forgot?) some of the lyrics. After coming back down to earth for a brief intermission, things at the hall were about to get even more Fungky.

Barreling their way towards Nectars in Burlington, VT, the road to get there saw Fungkshui work their way through New York by way of gigs at Snug Harbor in New Paltz, an unannounced acoustic set at The Eleven and finally, their fiery headlining set in Albany. Kicking things into gear with a technically proficient and impressive “Meat Salad” >“Ready To Go” > “Power Out” jam sandwich, it was immediately evident what all the fuss over this band is about. Part punk, part prog and overflowing with all kinds of primal groove, there is no denying the twin ax attack and chemistry of guitarists Jack Reed and Max Vitale. Along with the luscious locks of Jon Scheps on the low end, drummer Bobby Reilly and the band’s most recent addition of Dan Hogan on keys, Fungkshui took the Lark Hall stage by sheer force.

    Fungkshui Quantum Cosmic

Feeling confident and comfortable in the surroundings, Fungkshui would take the opportunity to debut a new song called “Run It” before getting down and dirty on “Barefoot Blues” and the playful “Dan Dan The Waterman.” One of the true highlights of the night came when the band invited Annie in the Water/Quantum Cosmic keyboardist Matt Richards out for some dueling piano action on Dan Hogan’s well-lit rig. Catharsis through collaboration shining through disco ball lights and huge smiles beaming from the faces of everyone on stage, it was the kind of magic musical moment that makes Lark Hall such a special place to see a show.

An unexpected guilty pleasure came next in the form of Alice DeeJay’s “Better Off Alone,” which had the whole room dancing around each other in circles.  After successfully showing their hand, Fungkshui would then “Ante Up” and “Fade Away” before going deep into the night with one last party jam, “That’ll Do.”

With such a formidable relationship already forming between the band and the venue, you almost can’t help but feel optimistic there will be many more magical Fungkshui moments on Lark for years to come. Fresh off the release of their first full length album “Ready to Go,” it’s clear this band is just that.  Buckle up in 2024, Fungkshui is about to blast off, and what can I say, I’m totally here for it.

  • Hearing Aide: PEAK “Hot Clips Volume 3”

PEAK has dropped the third installment in their ongoing live series, with Hot Clips Volume 3, released on January 5.

Culled from performances in 2023, Hot Clips Volume 3 features some of the band’s favorite recent performances. Specifically, this album shows what the band – Jeremy Hilliard (guitar and vocals), Johnny Young (keys and vocals), Josh T. Carter (bass and vocals), Kito Bovenschulte (drums), Nate Searing (drums on “Idyllwild Flower”) – are looking for in a jam of group interaction, transcendent moments that come naturally and without force, and happen organically.

Mixed and Mastered by Johnny Young and Jeremy Hilliard and engineered by Michelle Young, the songs range from older PEAK staples to unreleased tracks appearing on the next studio album. Covers on the album include a reimagined version of Woody Guthrie’s “Pastures of Plenty,” and a stretched-out take on the Led Zeppelin classic “The Song Remains the Same.”

  • LaMP Spring Tour Swings through Northeast, Mid Atlantic and Southeast

LaMP, featuring Russ Lawton, Scott Metzger and Ray Paczkowski has announced a 10-date Spring tour across the East Coast with stops in the Northeast, Mid Atlantic and Southeast.

Kicking off in April, the run is in addition to two previously announced March shows in Denver and Boulder.

    LAMP Spring Tour

LaMP formed in 2018 for a handful of one-off performances in Vermont. The chemistry between the three was immediate, resulting in a heavy groove, soul jazz sound with plenty of deep funk and technical prowess to spare. During the pandemic, they’d record and release their first studio album. It wasn’t until 2023, however, that the organ/guitar/drums trio found time in their busy schedules to focus energy on LaMP as a priority.

    LAMP Spring Tour

The trio’s musical commitments are far reaching: Metzger is an in-demand studio guitarist and member of Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, while Lawton and Paczkowski have their own duo Soule Monde and are original members of the Trey Anastasio Band. With both live and studio albums in the works and 12 shows planned for the Spring, LaMP five years from their inception is clearly just getting started.

We hit the Northeast pretty hard last Fall and the response was just incredible, lots of big crowds and sold out shows. So we decided that in the Spring it would be fun to play more around those same parts, but to instead find cool rooms outside of the big cities and bring the music to the people in spots a little more off the beaten path.

  • Jerry Garcia & Howard Wales Cap Off ‘Hooteroll’ Tour in Buffalo: January 29, 1972

Today marks the anniversary of the final show of one of the earliest Grateful Dead side projects. Lead guitarist Jerry Garcia along with Howard Wales delivered one last live interpretation of their jazz-rock fusion album Hooteroll to an audience at the University of Buffalo on this day in 1972. Wales, an avant-garde keyboard player, helped compose all songs on the album which was released the previous year.

    Hooteroll garcia wales

The Buffalo gig ended a string of shows played at smaller venues in the Northeast, including one at Syracuse University the week before. While Jerry Garcia may have been the main draw, this tour is also renowned for introducing many to The Mahavishnu Orchestra for the first time, a burgeoning live act with the great Jon McLaughlin on guitar who opened the shows and, according to some bystanders, blew the main act off the stage sometimes.

But Garcia and Wales would get the final word each night with extended takes on Hooteroll, playing alongside Jerry Love on drums, Jimmy Vincent on guitar, and Roger Troy (aka Jellyroll) on bass and vocals, with the group announced as “Howard Wales and Friends.” Unfortunately, no known recordings of tonight’s performance exist, but this excellent one from the show three nights before in Boston paints a clear picture of what transpired at these shows, with the band immediately launching into the frenzied, organ-driven jam “Southside Strut,” the first track of the album, then going off from there.

The music never comes to a complete stop as the band weaves in and out of different tempos and arrangements, although mixing up the songs from the order in which they appear on the album. A section called “Outer Space Regions” completely lives up to its billing before a soul-heavy “Carry Me Back” with Jellyroll on vocals re-energizes everything. Another selection from the album, “DC 502” surrounds a verified “Drums” section as well later on. See Youtube for a full setlist. The entire show is essentially a long, enjoyable 90-minute jam that covers all of Hooteroll and then some.

    Photo: Gordon James

Before being played in Buffalo and the Northeast, the seeds of Hooteroll were planted in San Francisco, as Garcia and Wales wound up performing at Monday night jam sessions at The Matrix. This would also be where Jerry met bassist John Kahn for the first time, marking the beginning of their long time partnership. For Jerry, the appeal of this outfit was the ability to play in a more relaxed context than Dead shows. Wales was a serious musician, and Jerry had to work hard to keep up with him, which he would say did more for his ear than anyone else he played with.

Howard didn’t have tunings or anything, he just played. Sometimes he would do these things that were so outside that you just couldn’t – unless you knew where it was going, you had no idea where to start. Sometimes they’d turn out to be just these things like four-bar blues turnarounds, relatively simple musical things, but they were so extended the way he’d play them – ‘God, what is this?’

    ~ Jerry Garcia, 1991 Interview

With the Hooteroll tour now concluded, Garcia would next turn his attention to a string of shows with another longtime collaborator, Merl Saunders, back home in the San Francisco area.

  • Disco Biscuits Announce Album Release Show At Webster Hall

The Disco Biscuits have announced an upcoming album release show for Revolution in Motion at New York City’s famous Webster Hall. The much anticipated gig is set to take place on March 29, coinciding with the release date of the band’s first new studio project in more than nine years. It comes in the midst of an already expansive 2024 winter tour, right in between performances scheduled for Wilkes Barre, Pa and Buffalo. It also marks the return of The Disco Biscuits to Webster Hall for the first time in nearly 25 years.

Revolution in Motion is already being touted by the Biscuits’ fanbase as the bands latest rock opera, following in the footsteps of Hot Air Balloon and Chemical Warfare Brigade. This latest one was originally conceptualized by guitarist Jon Gutwillig and collaborator Joey Friedman in 2021 before they brought Biscuits keyboardist Aron Magner in to help write the following year. The songs, which tell the tale of an alien interstellar journey, have all made their way into the band’s live repertoire one by one upon completion and are now ready for their official release in album form.

“With a large part of the space opera taking place in New York City, we thought it was only appropriate to play a show there on the day of its release,” noted Magner. “After our late-night rager at the Palladium over our New Year’s run in 2023, we can’t wait to get back to NYC and tell this story from start to finish.”

The Album Release Show at Webster Hall will go on sale to the public on Friday, January 26 at noon E.T. An Artist Presale will begin on Wednesday, January 24 at noon E.T. with the password: RevolutionInMotion. Visit www.discobiscuits.com for more information.

  • Umphreys McGee (Brooklyn) Steels The Show

On Thursday, January 19, Umphrey’s McGee made a triumphant return to New York with the kickoff of a two-night run at Brooklyn Steel. As part of their 2024 tour, the versatile band took the stage amidst a buzzing crowd eager for a musical journey.

Originating from South Bend, Indiana, Umphrey’s Mcgee has built a devoted fanbase in New York. They make frequent stops all over New York State – nearly every year in January, plus festival appearances – and it’s easy to see why. Early in the set, they dedicated a song to a friend in attendance celebrating their impressive 515th show.

The audience, unassuming yet in sync with the band’s vibe, engaged with each other while maintaining palpable excitement, with all eyes fixed on the stage. Opening with the crowd pleaser, “There’s No Crying In Mexico,” the night unfolded with a diverse array of songs and sounds, showcasing Umphrey’s Mcgee’s unique interpretation of the “jam band” concept. From psychedelic to progressive to punk, they seamlessly navigate various musical styles, demonstrating an undeniable chemistry among the bandmates.

The second set started with an electrifying cover of LCD Soundsystem’s “Tribulations” and concluded with a playful nod to Tenacious D’s “Kielbasa.” After leaving the stage, the band returned for an encore, bidding the audience farewell until the following night at Brooklyn Steel, followed by another one at Brooklyn Bowl. Their journey continues nationwide until the end of April, promising more musical adventures to fans across the country.

  • Richard James of Neighbor Talks “Silver” and Neighbor Nine, ahead of Weekend Shows at Putnam Place and Levon Helm Studios

Neighbor will make their way to Saratoga Springs for the first time on Friday, January 19, having grown a sizeable following in the Northeast over the past five years. They’ll also be at Levon Helm Studios the next night, January 20, for an intimate show, sure to be packed with diehard fans on what looks to be a frosty night.

Speaking with singer and keyboardist Richard James, one had to know – how did it take so long to come to Saratoga Springs?

“Every time we come to Putnam Place with Pink Talking Fish is a blast, and I wanted to make sure the first time we played there with Neighbor, it was a packed house and the date made sense. Having not played Saratoga Springs definitely has driven up interest in the show, and could be the start of something.”

Neighbor is the creation of childhood neighbors Richard James (vocals, keys) and Lyle Brewer (guitar), plus Dan Kelly (bass) and Dean “The Dux” Johnston (drums), together combining ambitious composition, soulful balladry, and a fearless approach to improvisations with intent, creating Neighbor’s “down home” sound.

While James was touring with Pink Talking Fish, Brewer went on to teach guitar at Berklee College of Music, and in 2018 they revisited playing music together. With no barriers, it was like they were back in middle school, writing songs and performing together. The two are now finding balance after five years, between songwriting and jamming on (mostly) original material each night.

    neighbor

Having just celebrated their 5 year anniversary as a band earlier this month, but four years ago in early 2020, Neighbor was just getting warmed up when COVID hit, shutting down the live music industry. Thus, in the years that have followed, they have been strategic with their touring schedule.

“All members of the band have families and kids. Lyle is an instructor at Berklee College of Music, and Dean is drum chair at Milton Academy outside of Boston, so routing needs to work out among balanced schedules and family obligations”

This, while also trying to push as hard as they can without burning out or taking away from instruction at these music schools, maneuvering the the band’s direction deftly. The band, collectively, wants to make sure they are not overwhelmed by how much is going on – the number of shows, the time on the road and away from home.

As a band, Neighbor wants longevity, and they’ll defer to taking the slow road instead of rushing.

    neighbor

Neighbor saw its genesis well before 2018, going back to when James was on the road with Pink Talking Fish. “I’ve been writing since I ever got into music. Once I got started with Pink Talking Fish, I toured for six or seven years straight, compiled all this original music, and it was eventually time to do something different,” said James. After spending a day in New Orleans with piano legend Jon Cleary and gaining clarity towards a vision for his music, he began a Tuesday night residency at Thunder Road in Somerville, recruiting childhood neighbor Lyle Brewer, hence the band name, Neighbor.

For Neighbor’s five year anniversary, they decided to go back to their roots and recently announced a five week residency, one week for each year as a band, to pay tribute to how things came to be what they are now. James recalls those early Neighbor shows. “There are so many weird, crazy antics we would do at Tuesday night residencies in the past, special guests, switching up instruments, keeping fans on their toes and coming back for more the next week.” They look to bring back this magic with their upcoming residency at Soundcheck Studios, starting February 20 through March 19, every Tuesday night. “A lot of people travel to see us, and although we play the songs differently each night to keep it fresh, to give it that extra factor (horns), keeping it interesting where fans won’t want to miss a show” said James.

There is also the Neighbor rock opera, Silver, which was recently performed with the “Neighbor Nine,” where five additional horns and back up singers join the Neighbor quartet for a surprise factor on any given night. The Neighbor Nine come together with the full band, plus Matt Wayne (saxophone), James Cronin (trumpet), Rob Krahn (trombone), with Renee DuPuis and Joanne Cassidy as backup vocalists. The band has custom baseball jerseys, and if four members are wearing them, you might see the three horns and two singers come out and join Neighbor for some or all of the show.

Performing Silver was hands down the show of the year. I was blown away by the musicianship of the other band members, and even with limited opportunities to practice in advance, we ran a bunch of music during soundcheck and it was all there, no one skipped a beat. To have that trust and perform at the level we did – including songs played that night for the first time – it was magical. Adding in the show was rescheduled from October when the shooting in Lewiston postponed many events, in this case until January – which meant practice during the holiday season, a tough call for family-centric band members, but they pulled it off.

    Richard James

That rock opera is based on the whole idea behind Neighbor – “let’s go out and have fun,” as James puts it. “The moment this stops being fun, it’s time we should stop doing it. We thought it would be fun to write a rock odyssey. Lyle and Richard grew up on rock operas, and we gave it a go during COVID, escaping the division in the country while settling on a story: two guys plan to leave the planet, stumble upon a guy who has the answers, and take off on an interstellar adventure, spread out over 10 songs, ” “Magic Marble Crew,” “Magna Zero” and “We Need You” among them. The story unfolds as the pair discover different civilizations, steal a spaceship, all in the pursuit of finding a home where everyone looks out for each other – neighbors helping neighbors, if you will.”

Having just released 30 shows on Nugs.Net and a thorough collection of music on the Neighbor Bandcamp page, Neighbor’s diverse catalog of hundreds of songs makes them one of the most exciting and unpredictable live bands in the music scene today. Don’t miss them at Putnam Place on Friday, January 19, and Saturday, January 20 at Levon Helm Studios.

A singer, songwriter, guitarist and percussionist born and raised in Upstate NY on the shores of Lake Champlain, surrounded by the beauty of the Adirondack Mountains to the south and the Green Mountains of VT to the east.

From a young age, Joshua began studying an array of instruments and musical mediums ranging from orchestral percussion to vocal performance, rhythm guitar to world music. He has performed with numerous bands across the United States and internationally and shared stages with The Wailers, O.A.R., SOJA, Black Uhuru, Michael Franti, Rusted Root, Goose among others.

With a blend of reggae, hip hop, folk and soul, meshed with conscious lyrics that question the state of our world today, West will be celebrating his 30th birthday with stops in his ‘hometowns,’ starting at Lark Hall on January 25th, performing with Quantum Cosmic, then heads up to Burlington for a show at Nectar’s the next night to perform with Annie in the Water, then closes out the weekend at Olive Ridley’s in Plattsburgh with West’s new band on January 27.

That new band – the Joshua West Band – integrates West’s original music that hasn’t found it’s way into his other groups where he is a drummer or percussionist. West’s vocals will be front and center with his eponymous band, stepping out as a guitarist, vocalist and percussionist. The lineup features Jack McChesney (Satyrdagg) on drums, Mowgli Giannitti (Satyrdagg, The Reflexions, Heavy Nettles) on bass, Ty Miller (The Reflexions) on guitar/vocals, Van Garrison (All Night Boogie Band) on keys, and Connor Dunn (Let’s Be Leonard) on saxophone.

Coming up in February, Annie in the Water will kick’s off Winter Carnival at The Waterhole in Saranac Lake on February 2, prepared to warm up the crowd even if the temperatures are below freezing outside.

West has also recently released Let Your Voice Be Heard, and is back in the studio, currently recording “Something in the Water,” inspired by the pocket of roots reggae music that has come out of the Finger Lakes (John Brown’s Body, 10 ft. Ganja Plant, Thunderbody, Mosaic Foundation, Giant Panda Guerrilla Dub Squad, Root Shock). West shares that his collaborators include an all-time favorite rhythm section of Tommy Benedetti (John Brown’s Body, Dub Apocalypse) and Nate Edgar (The Nth Power, John Brown’s Body) along with members of Giant Panda and featured vocalists.
