  • The Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes Announces Principal Strings Show This Spring

The Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes will return for its fourth concert in the OSFL Musicians’ Choice Chamber Series “OSFL Principal Strings” hosted at the Park Church in Elmira on April 26.

After performing “Music With Friends” last fall, the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes will perform their fourth concert in the OSFL Musicians’ Choice Chamber Series “OSFL Principal Strings”. The concert will be performed by Quartetto Masuno– five principal musicians from the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes. With the concert kicking off on April 26, the OSFL has also announce that there will be a pre-concert reception including a wine tasting by Lakewood Vineyards for early arrivers.

Led by OSFL Concertmaster Augusto Diemecke, Quartetto Masuno signifies “quartet plus one” coming together as a whole in unity. When sharing news about the concert, Augusto described the epitome of string quartet  experience “is to play together as one”. Attending audience will witness that effect as the group performs two iconic chamber music pieces by Franz Schubert.

Along with concertmaster Diemecke, the stellar lineup of virtuosic musicians from the OSFL will include assistant concertmaster Debrah Devine, assistant principal Viola Joanne Lowe, principal cello Christine Lowe-Diemecke, and assistant principal cello S. Shade Zajac. Together, they will breathe life into two timeless masterpieces by Franz Schubert, immersing audiences in the rich tapestry of the chamber music tradition. Audiences will be captivated by Schubert’s iconic String Quartet No. 14, famously known as “Death and the Maiden,” a cornerstone of the chamber music repertoire revered for its emotional depth and evocative, haunting melodies.

Additionally, the ensemble will showcase Schubert’s majestic Cello Quintet in C Major, a crowning achievement of the composer’s illustrious but all too short career, ushering in the early romantic era. With its rich harmonies and emotive melodies, this quintet which was composed for two violins, viola, and two cellos, promises to take listeners on a journey of profound emotional depth mixed with artistic expression.

Starting at 6:30, concertgoers will be invited to indulge their senses and savor the flavors of the region with a pre-concert wine tasting by Lakewood Vineyards. The tasting will set the stage for a delightful evening of cultural enrichment and musical immersion at the historical Park Church. Fans are encouraged to not miss this extraordinary opportunity to experience the transformative power of live chamber music where passion, precision, and unparalleled artistry unite to create an unforgettable evening of chamber music.

Following the tradition of the Musicians’ Choice Chamber Music Series, oral program notes will be given by the musicians interspersed throughout the performance. The short format program which is approximately 75 minutes is presented in an intimate, relaxed setting without intermission.

To secure tickets, fans can visit OSFL.org or call 607-936-2873 or in person at the OSFL office, 49 Bridge Street, Corning, NY to reserve their seats. Tickets for the April 26th concert are $40 for adults, $20 for students with ID, and free for children under age 18. Groups of 10 or more will receive a 10% discount. In addition, over 100 Resident Artists from 24 states and five countries will reside across six weeks and perform major orchestral pieces like Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Copland’s Appalachian Spring, as well as prominent solo and chamber works.

Presented by Caroga Arts Collective, the Caroga Lake Music Festival is a multi-genre music festival presenting a series of world-class performances in the Southern Adirondacks. Since the festival’s founding in 2012, CMLF has grown from a one-week chamber music festival to an internationally recognized festival showcasing a multitude of genres from May to September. The mainstay is a five-week summer residency featuring renowned soloists, chamber musicians, and orchestral professionals in collaboration with international touring guest artists.

Located on the shore of West Caroga Lake, Sherman’s Park is the home base for the Caroga Lake Music Festival. Known as a venue for iconic big bands in the 1920s and 1930s, Sherman’s provides the perfect up-close setting for an engaging and memorable concert-going experience. This groundbreaking initiative aims to deliver accessible music lessons and mentorship opportunities to students in schools where the offerings are not otherwise provided in their music programs. This summer marks another milestone for Caroga Arts as they introduce the SPACE Summer Camp, previously recognized as the CLMF Lessons & Ensemble Program. The camp is designed to continue the momentum of providing individual and small group lessons throughout the summer, offering students the opportunity to learn from the esteemed Resident Artists.

        • Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra Delights with “Roman Holiday”

On Saturday, April 6, the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra closed its 2023-2024 Symphonic Series with “Roman Holiday,” a thrilling program of music both from and about the sunny lands of the Mediterranean.

          Roman Holiday
Carlos Perez, Ajen Lewis, Cassie Lee, Charlie Sobel, Joe Sobel

The evening opened with “Fandangos,” a piece by Cornell University-based composer Roberto Sierra that evoked Spanish dance forms of the eighteenth century, replete with bold, Andalusian-style trumpets and assertive percussion. Aided by the committed conducting of Maestro Daniel Hege, Sierra took the orchestra to extremes of speed, volume, and emotional impact. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s dazzling showpiece “Capriccio Italien” followed, with a martial chorus of brass and a seductive medley of folk tunes, played by the orchestra with shimmering lyricism.

The high point of the “Roman Holiday” concert, though, was Ottorino Respighi’s stunning “Pines of Rome,” an orchestral experience of the Eternal City and its iconic pine trees.

The Philharmonic was expanded to its largest size for this piece, with 75 musicians onstage and six more in the theater boxes overlooking the audience – trumpets and trombones that Respighi meant to invoke Roman legions marching on the Appian Way. As always with this ensemble, the woodwinds shone, with stand-out solos from flutist Karen Bogardus, clarinetist Paul Wongjin Cho, oboist John Lathwell, and bassoonist Melissa Kritzer; hornist Alex Shuhan and trumpeter Frank Campos also provided dazzling moments.

Mikhail Shlyuger, Margaret Heath, Nina Heath-Shlyuger

Maestro Hege led the orchestra with his trademark elegance and expressiveness, infusing Respighi’s astonishing work with lyrically shaped phrases and passionate crescendos that stirred the soul.

A standing ovation and many bows for Hege and the orchestra were proof of the power of this music and of the great skill of the Binghamton Philharmonic.

Not only this, but the group plans to play original works, as well as covered works by various other artists.

WindSync is made up of five classically trained virtuoso musicians who approach artistry, education, and community building with the charisma and openness of the boy band that inspired their name. The concert is free and open to the public. Earlier that afternoon at 4pm, WindSync will also offer a masterclass in the Hockett Family Recital Hall.

The show celebrates the release of the group’s WindSync Plays Miguel del Aguila album which is set to be released five days prior on April 5. The album features music by Miguel del Aguila, a contemporary composer whose sound is highly influenced by his Latin American roots.

The April 10 program takes place at the James J. Whalen Center for Music as part of the Robert G. Boehmler Community Foundation Series. The program features the woodwind rendition of various artists, along with the group’s original compositions.

          April 10 Program:

Shawn Okpebholo: Rise – premiered this season, the Nigerian-American composer’s work explored racial injustice.

Mozart, Serenade in C minor K. 388 – this is a different kind of wind serenade. It’s brooding versus chipper, and Mozart wrote it at a time when wind music was trendy in Vienna.

Marc Mellits: Apollo – in honor of the 2024 total solar eclipse – WindSync commissioned Marc Mellits to write Apollo in connection with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing.

Dieterich Buxtehude: Passacaglia in D minor, BuxWV 161 – hear how the wind arrangement of this solemn piece makes it even more haunting.
