In an industry where so many artists and bands come and go, American rock and roll, country, blues and R&B hybrid band Little Feat has remained ever-present since the late 1960s.
Nearly 30 projects have come out over the course of Little Feat’s 55-year existence, with the band’s most recent full-length record coming out less than a month ago. Following their new record, Little Feat is set to headline the NYS Blues Fest in Syracuse on Saturday, June 15.
Through breakups, regroupings, lineup changes and genre-bending albums, Little Feat has maintained the spirit that gave them an audience in the first place. That of making authentic and passionate music that’s a joy to listen to and feeds the soul.
The band’s new album, Sam’s Place, just came out on May 17 and is their first album in 12 years. The record is also the first Little Feat project to feature longtime percussionist Sam Clayton on lead vocals, and the first to lean heavily into the blues.
Bill Payne, pianist for Little Feat, is the sole founding member of the band who is still actively involved. With a wildly impressive resume of musicians he played with as a session artist, including Pink Floyd, Stevie Nicks, Toto, Jimmy Buffet and many more, Payne is no amateur in the industry.
NYS Music had a conversation with Payne about Little Feat’s recent record, the significance of live music, the future of Little Feat and more.

Erkan: The gap between Rooster Rag and Sam’s Place was 12 years. What was it like for the band to get back together and record after your longest break between albums?
Payne: It wasn’t that big of a deal. There was an interim right after Rooster Rag where I was playing with The Doobie Brothers. So that time was occupied. I didn’t feel like there was a huge gap in terms of what I was working on. I don’t think it really affected the band all too much.
Erkan: What makes Sam’s Place different from all other Little Feat projects?
Payne: I think it’s unique in a couple of senses. The biggest one is focusing on Sam Clayton for vocals. I wanted to do this many years ago, and it never took place, so I was thrilled. The other thing that I think stands out with this record is that Michael LoBue, or we call him “Bull,” was playing harmonica for us. Also, the record focuses on one genre of music rather than the eclectic mix of things that we normally do.
Erkan: Now that Sam’s Place is out, how has the reception been?
Payne: The reception is excellent. It’s always great when you can project yourself on a project. I had one guy comment saying, “Oh man, I love Little Feat, but when I found you were doing a blues record, I was like, ‘Oh no!’ And then I sat down and listened to it, and my jaw fell to the floor.”
Erkan: Have you been able to play it live yet?
Payne: We’ve cherry-picked a few songs. We were just in Berkeley, and we played one of the tunes that evening.
Erkan: How important to the band are live shows?
Payne: I think to our band in particular, and any band for that matter, especially these days, they are exceedingly important. The music industry has changed so much over the years and selling records is not what it used to be. Streaming is a conundrum in terms of you couldn’t possibly make a living doing it unless you were a star like Lady Gaga. I think all the proponents that have always been there for artists are all important. Live shows, recordings, rehearsals—the whole nine yards.
Erkan: Sam’s Place is the first Little Feat album to be released in the streaming era. What aspects of the album did it affect, if any?
Payne: I didn’t think about it one way or the other. I don’t think anybody did. We just played.
Erkan: You’ve had the privilege of seeing the music industry evolve massively throughout your career. Do you have any words on what it’s been like to exist through the countless changes and evolutions the industry has gone through?
Payne: On certain levels, it’s like a frog being boiled in water. People don’t realize things until it’s too late. On other levels, I’ve felt like Nostradamus at times. Like when I was trying to convince Warner Brothers that the internet is something they might want to pay attention to. Artists don’t write or compose or create because they want to. They have to. In other words, it’s going to come out, whether there’s a platform to present it or not. It’s something that you have in you or you don’t.
Erkan: Do you have any words of advice for people who might want to get into the industry but don’t know what to do?
Payne: If you’re the type of person who’s inquisitive about things, you have to embrace that with all with all you have. As an artist you have in your quiver, so to speak, the ability to share with people not only what you like to listen to or have been influenced by but how you might influence others, which is your own. Those things are important to share, especially in this day and age.
Erkan: Your 1978 album Waiting for Columbus made it to Rolling Stones’ 50 Greatest Live Albums of All Time list. What factors would you say contributed most to that album being so highly praised?
Payne: What exemplifies anything that we gravitate to with musicians and artists is two things: One is the music itself, the compositions. And secondly, there is the craftsmanship. The sonic quality of that record is wonderful. We had some brilliant people working with us. What makes Little Feat Little Feat, is the musicianship and great songs.
Erkan: You’ve mentioned in a couple of previous interviews that you’re actively writing a memoir. Can you tell me more about how that’s going and what stages of the book you’re in?
Payne: I’m approximately 70,000 words into it. I think that Thomas McGuane said the other day that between the musings and the dead ends, writing can often be like starting to fire in the rain. It’s tough, but I enjoy the process. All manner of things are revealed when you write about yourself. I was curious to see if I could tickle my brain and operate on myself, and yeah, it turns out I can.
Erkan: What’s next for Little Feat?
Payne: I was just listening before you called to the last mix of some songs that we have coming out on a record next year. The album is untitled, but they’re all new songs. People settled into Sam’s Place, and we’ll follow up with a punch with this new record. It’s extraordinary. There are some good guests on it. Hopefully, we’ll have another conversation about that.

The summer series will include 13 weeks of live shows, ending on August 28th. Larkin’s annual Food Truck Tuesdays season will also begin June 4th, offering a host of curated food trucks and live music until August 27th.
This year marks the 12th season of Live at Larkin, which has become a staple of Buffalo’s Larkinville neighborhood. The site was home to the former Larkin Soap Factory, which supplied the second largest catalog sales business in the country. Since the factory’s closure in the 1940s, there have been many attempts to revitalize the neighborhood. These came to a head in 2012, with the opening of Larkin Square. Since its establishment, the venue has become a community gathering place, offering a host of family-friendly events.
One of the most popular events hosted by Larkin Square is Food Truck Tuesdays. This weekly event begins June 4th, offering around 25 food trucks each Tuesday. Truck offerings range from Italian to Thai to Halal, with each truck offering nutritionist-certified options. The event draws trucks from Buffalo, Rochester, and beyond for visitors to enjoy. Guests can bring their own chairs, but coolers and outside alcohol are prohibited.
In addition to food trucks, the weekly event offers the chance to enjoy live music from local bands. The Walter Kemp 3 will kick off the summer season with their award winning jazz. When not playing with legends like Sun Ra’s Arkestra and Sabu Adeloya, kemp teaches at Buffalo’s Villa Maria College. The event series offers a diverse spectrum of genres, ranging from McCarthyizm‘s garage rock to Dee Adams’ country. With this vast array of music, event-goers are sure to enjoy the performances while enjoying food truck fare.
June 5th also marks the return of the KeyBank Live at Larkin summer concert series. This weekly concert series will feature performances from local groups, as well as other amenities. Concert-goers will be able to purchase bites from a curated array of on-site food trucks each week. In addition, Larkin Square will offer beer, wine, and cocktails for purchase. Larkin Square’s Bratts Hill Restaurant will be open to serve authentic Jamaican cuisine for dinner services during Live at Larkin.
The concert series kicks off at 5pm on June 4th with a performance from John & Mary & the Valkyries. The folk-rock duo is comprised of 10,000 Maniacs members John Lombardo and Mary Ramsey. The series will continue for 13 weeks, until a closing performance by hard rockers Grosh on August 28th. After several weeks of great performances, the Geneva Music Festival is wrapping up for the 2024 season. The final week of performances begins on June 4, with a free lakefront concert. This concert is followed by a photography exhibition and chamber performance on June 7 while June 9 marks the end of the season, with an outdoors blues concert closing out the festival.
Violinist Geoffrey Herd founded the Geneva Music Festival in 2011, as a weekend to spread appreciation of classical music. The festival soon evolved into a four-week long celebration, attracting artists from across the globe. While originally based in classical music, the festival also now highlights jazz, and bluegrass artists. The festival’s mission is to spread music appreciation to everyone, being an all-ages event. The event now attracts thousands of concert-goers from across the Finger Lakes.
2024 has already been a busy season for the Geneva Music Festival, hosting a number of spectacular performances. The festival kicked off with a sold-out Musicology Mixer night at Geneva’s Linden Social Club. Week two of the festival saw the acclaimed Brentano Quartet play Hobart and William Smith Colleges’ Gearan Center. The Juilliard-formed quartet played a selection from Haydn, Shostakovich, and Mendelssohn.
Hobart and William Smith Colleges’ Gearan Center for Performing Arts
The festival’s final week will kick off with a free lakefront concert on June 4th, at 8:15pm. This concert will be a preview for the festival’s final artist-in-residence concert. The theme of this year’s final concert is “Night and Day,” with pieces meant to illustrate the progression from dawn to dusk. World-renowned cellist Clive Greensmith, pianist Anna Petrova, and other talented musicians will perform. The concert will begin with “String Quartet Op. 76, No.4” by Haydn, meant to represent the sunrise. It will also feature modern composer Mark Olivieri’s “Artifacts of a Valiant Past”, a Scriabin solo by pianist Anna Petrova, a piano trio by Kaija Saariaho, and a Schoenberg tone-poem for a string sextet.
“The solo piano piece that I’m playing has to do with day and night. The first movement represents the day and the sea in daylight. [Scriabin] was inspired to write this piece when he first saw the sea, and so you can hear the peacefulness and the beauty of that; and the second movement is very turbulent and represents the stormy sea”
– Pianist Anna Petrova
Hobart and William Smith Colleges’ Gearan Center will host the concert on June 7th, at 7:30pm. Prior to the concert, a photography exhibition highlighting local artists will be held at the center’s Melly Lobby.
The final concert of the season will be The Brothers Blue, a local cross-genre bluegrass band. Back by popular demand, the concert will be held outdoors at Geneva on the Lake. The Brothers Blue will close out the season with their invigorating fiddle, mandolin, and banjo playing. This concert will take place June 9th, at 2:00pm.

Tickets for these concerts are currently on sale. Standard ticket price is $35, with discounts for college students available. Children under 18 can attend concerts for free. For more information on the Geneva Music Festival and ticketing, visit the link here.
They say blood is thicker, but when it comes to musical siblings, being related can often be the kiss of death. Historically speaking, the list of dysfunctional “brother bands” is long and distinguished. From acts like the Everlys, The Kinks, and Duane and Greg Allman, to modern rockers like Chris and Rich Robinson of The Black Crows and Noel and Liam Gallagher of Oasis, tales of in-fighting, lawsuits and bad break-ups are the stuff of legend. Hell, the last thing in the world I can imagine is writing songs with my older brother. Not because I don’t love the guy, but simply because I just wouldn’t feel comfortable sharing my most personal feelings with him that way. But this article isn’t about me, it’s about The Avett Brothers and the shared bond that makes them so special and unique.
The Avett Brothers performing at MVP Arena in Albany, NY 5/23/24
For Scott and Seth Avett, trust is a must and their unwavering belief in each other is largely what’s responsible for carrying the genre-bending folk rockers from Concord, North Carolina all the way to the top. If you’ve never heard them play before, imagine three Bob Dylan’s rolled into one, or a cross between Tom T. Hall and Faith No More, or John Prine meets Nirvana. Hard-working and relatable, above all, the Avett’s are a family band with an uncanny ability to keep it real, no matter how tough times get.
No strangers to the area, The Avett Brothers formed in 2001 and have been making regular stops around the Capital Region for over two decades now. First playing for only a handful of people at a since-closed Italian restaurant in Albany, the Avett’s have also played memorable gigs at Troy’s Revolution Hall as far back as 2007, were regular fixtures during the early years of Mountain Jam Festival, and in recent times, have gone on to headline multi-night runs at Brewery Ommegang and Beak & Skiff Orchards. Their stop at MVP Arena on Thursday, May 23th, was the group’s first Albany date since performing at the Palace Theatre in 2012. Tapping red-hot Americana/roots artist Sierra Ferrell to open the show, fans old and new were all but guaranteed a magical evening of music. It’s just a shame more people didn’t get the memo in time.
Sierra Ferrell performing ahead of Avett Brothers at MVP Arena in Albany, NY 5/23/24
Kicking off the evening with a blistering, but brief set, West Virginia-born songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sierra Ferrell was stunning from the start. Seen as one of the brightest young luminaries in roots music today, Ferrell’s soulful voice was powerful and confident and instantly won the crowd over on songs like “In Dreams,” “Why’d Ya Do It” and “Jeremiah” from her 2021 debut album Long Time Coming. Along with her dapper and distinguished backing band, Ferrell’s wide rang of styles on songs like “Money Train,” “I Could Drive You Crazy,” and “Dollar Bill Bar” offered a taste of everything from country and ragtime, to foot-stomping folk to straight up rock n’ roll.
Pausing to ask the audience if anyone was looking forward to Del Fest as much as she was, the meager response was broken up by one man who screamed out “Del Yeah!” which elicited widespread laughter. After paying homage to a couple of her heroes by covering Arthur Smith Trio’s “Chittlin’ Cookin’ Time in Cheatham County” and “Years” by John Anderson, the remainder of the set featured material from Sierra’s excellent new album, Trail of Flowers including “American Dreaming,” and the arena-ready, Celtic-like stomper “Fox Hunt” to close out the truly unique set. Proving the hype is real on this one, Sierra Ferrell stood tall in Albany and made instant fans out of many of the first-time listeners.

After a brief intermission that included songs from local underground folk heroes, the Felice Brothers, the stage was set and I knew I was exactly where I needed to be. It was finally time for The Avett Brothers to take us to church. The rare kind of band that have always been honest with the audience and true to themselves, I may not be a smart man, but even I know that’s hard to find these days. For me, their show at the MVP Arena on May 23th was personal and it hit me over the head like a ton of bricks. Timeless harmonies with lyrics that have helped shape my life in a way few other bands have, I think that’s a big part of the Avett’s secret recipe. An ability to put feelings into words in a way that the common man can understand and relate to. It’s a gift the Avett’s have been sharing with us since deciding to make music a career more than 20 years ago.

Opening their performance with the beautifully sung vocal prelude of “Never Apart” that featured both Scott and Seth sharing the same microphone, it was the first of six songs that would be played from the band’s recently released self-titled album. Along with older brother Scott on banjo and Seth on acoustic guitar, the group also consists of longtime members Bob Crawford on standup and electric bass, Joe Kwon on electric cello, Tania Elizabeth on fiddle, Mike Marsh on drums and Bonnie Avett-Rini on piano.
“I wonder which brother is better Which one our parents loved the most
I wondered what my dad would say He said, “I love you and I’m proud of you both In so many different ways
Always remember there was nothing worth sharing Like the love that let us share our name”
Lyrics from “Murder in the City”
The genre-bending folk rockers would show off their experimental side next on the digitally enhanced “Satan Pulls the Strings” before landing on the lone song played from 2012’s The Carpenter, the foot stomping singalong, “Live and Die.” From there the band would play a powerful rendition of their introspective hit, “Morning Song”, which received the biggest cheers of the night thus far. Bouncing back with the upbeat lead single from the new album, “Love of a Girl” set the stage for an early highlight of the show, the sentimental fan favorite “Murder in the City.” A song that embodies what The Avett Brothers are all about – a brilliant combination of lyrics, melody and chord progression – its mantra about family and love was stunning and poignant.
Seth and Scott Avett performing at MVP Arena in Albany, NY 5/23/24
Pausing for a moment to let the song resonate, fiddle player Tania Elizabeth, battling through some minor feedback, had her turn in the spotlight with an extended solo on “Le reel du pendu / Les bars de la prison,” shredding the hairs of her bow to a rabid applause as the rest of the band rejoined the stage behind her. After working their way through another new one “Country Kid,” the band would tug at the heart strings on “Living of Love”, our first song from The Avett’s breakthrough 2007 album, Emotionalism, before another well-penned Scott song, “Vanity,” forced the audience to take a critical look inside themselves.
Picking up the pace now, the momentum of the show took a major turn when The Avett’s launched into 2009’s high octane “Kick Drum Heart,” getting the entire crowd up on their feet and clapping in unison when suddenly, Seth Avett jumped off the stage with his wireless guitar, ran the length of the floor while high-fiving fans and soloing all the way into the upper deck of section 123 of the MVP Arena before making his way back to the stage for the songs epic conclusion. Completely connected with the crowd, the band easily could have stopped the show here and no one would have complained, but luckily for everyone in attendance, the magic was only just beginning.
Feeding off the crowds energy, Seth Avett runs wild at MVP Arena in Albany, NY 5/23/24
Transporting listeners to a contemplative space on “Cheap Coffee,” a song that features heartwarming audio samples and feels radically different from most of their other work, the tone was set for another beloved staple and perhaps most well-known song, “I and Love and You.” With the crowd taking over and singing those same words back in unison, it was a moment that truly gave you goosebumps. With the audience firmly in their grip, the placement of the sentimental love letter “I Wish I Was” flowed perfectly.

Until this point in the night the band had let their songs do most of the talking, so when older brother Scott took to the microphone and starting speaking from the heart, you knew he had something significant to say. Reflecting on the moment, he mentioned how he “looks out there and sees people that I connect to, how grateful [he] is and that those people are the reason they are here tonight.” Saying, “The opportunity to do that is amazing, it’s our life’s work, and we are so blessed to do it.” Reminiscing about what it was like getting reviews in the early days, Scott commented how “It was an interesting part of our journey, reading what people said about us. Eventually we had to stop reading until we could get to a point where we could do it without being crushed.
We would get things written about us like, “The Avett Brothers show potential, but write small songs,” to which the Albany crowd loudly started booing. “We booed them too, but later we realized writing small songs is kind of an awesome thing.” Seth would playfully stop him there and say, “What is this old man with a banjo talking about?” before continuing with similar sentiments. “In any event, we were always very excited to be written about no matter what they said. I do recall we had hoped to be compared to our heroes. We didn’t get that so much, but we did get comparisons to The Muppets. Those were very good days, very exciting days. We thought it might be fun to give you a glimpse of what those early shows were like. Instead of talking about it, we’re gonna try and illustrate it and there’s only one group in the whole world that can help us do that and luckily, here in Albany they are here tonight! So without further ado, would you please help us welcome to the stage… The Avetts.” Erupting in a massive applause, the spotlights then revealed three Muppet-like alter egos of the band – Seth Monster, Scott Monster and Bob Monster – who would go on to ‘perform’ “Hard Worker” and “I Would Be Sad.” You can watch fan shot footage of that in the clip below.
Master of Muppets: Watch fan shot footage of The Avett’s performing “Hard Worker” live in Albany, NY 5/23/24
Smiles for miles all around, the real-life Avetts would get serious once again, performing a flawless version of the song “Shame.” A true emotional journey of “ups and downs,” the band would bounce back with an upbeat rocker from the new album, “Orion’s Belt” before going all the way back to 2006’s “Left on Laura, Left on Lisa.” After a cathartic rendition of “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise,” the Muppet version of the band would return for a set closing singalong of the funky hit single “Ain’t No Man” resulting in a veritable party-like atmosphere on and off stage.
“When nothing is owed or deserved or expected And your life doesn’t change by the man that’s elected If you’re loved by someone, you’re never rejected Decide what to be and go be it”
-Lyrics from “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise”
After exiting the stage to a standing ovation, the band would take a little extra time soaking it in before returning. “Ya know it’s funny how in some rooms three thousand people can sound like twenty thousand, so thank you for that.” Choosing to play the closer from the new self-titled album, “We Are Loved,” the vocal harmonies were about as beautiful as it gets.

After paying homage to David Childers & The Modern Don Juans by covering “The Prettiest Thing,” the career-spanning show came to a proper close with Seth saying “Albany, thank you so much for letting us play for you. This is our last one and we are honored to do it with you,” as the band strummed the opening chords of perhaps the most emotional song in the Avett catalog, “No Hard Feelings.” Fading out with the repeating lyrics of “I have no enemies” sending chills up your spine, you knew you had just witnessed something special.
Scott Avett performing at MVP Arena in Albany, NY 5/23/24
With polished harmonies and heartfelt melodies, a charismatic stage presence and a wealth of wisdom contained within the lyrics, these songs feel timeless and should be heard by everyone. Rich with “repeat customer” appeal, the brothers Avett are veritable song-writing machines and put every ounce of energy and life experience they have into their craft. Even after a two-plus hour performance, there were still so many “favorites” left on the table in Albany. It’s no wonder people are so willing to travel from all over to see this band again and again.
With 3 Grammy nominations so far and over 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone, it’s easy to see the broad appeal and why the Avett Brothers continue to connect. From their first time in Albany playing at an Italian restaurant where people were more interested in pasta than what they were doing, to now playing the city’s biggest Arena two decades later, it’s fair to say this family band finally has Albany’s undivided attention now. At least they do mine. Salute.

No stranger to Western NY, Tim McGraw brought his energy back to Buffalo on May 4, rocking the KeyBank Center. Playing in the area for the first time in 5 years, McGraw’s Standing Room Only Tour ’24 tour featured Carly Pearce and rising star Abby Anderson as openers.
Like many other regions, Western NY has taken a liking to country music and Tim McGraw over the years has played gigs in Buffalo, Darien Lake, Rochester, and Canandaigua, often on the same tour. With five prominent venues from Buffalo to Canandaigua, there is no shortage of fans or places to play.
Hitting the stage after Abby Anderson’s brief set, Carly Pearce came out to the hyped Buffalo crowd. With the hockey and football seasons both over for a while, Buffalonians needed something to keep then energized and Pearce did her part. She even bantered about illegal activities in Buffalo. Apparently, wearing slippers in public after 10pm is against the law, as is throwing a ball at an unexpected person’s head.
Since coming into her own with 2017’s “Every Little Thing”, Pearce has been a mainstay on country charts and stations across the country. While the thirty-four-year-old has her own style and sound, it is very reminiscent of the 90s country sounds of Faith Hill, Shania Twain, and Miranda Lambert, with some vindictive tones. Such is the case with “What He Didn’t Do”. The song talks about a breakup and different sides of the story. While she won’t say he did, she will tell you what he didn’t do. Pearce urges fans that if they are in a relationship and they question why they are in it, it’s time to get out. Applause and cheers fill the arena as Pearce stands there looking teary eyed with an ear to ear smile.
That’s just dirty laundry I don’t need to air the truth So I ain’t gonna tell you everything he did But I’ll tell you what he didn’t do
Having worked with high profile names over the past several years, including Chirs Stapelton, Ashley McBryde, and Leann Rimes, Pearce has paid her dues and earned all the accolades. Included accolades are 2018 CMT Award for Breakthrough Video of The Year for “Every Little Thing” and 2021 CMA Award for Female Vocalist of the Year. Keep your eyes on this talented musician as her career continues to gain steam going forward.
Setlist: Diamondback, Next Girl, Easy Going, Never Wanted to Be That Girl, Let’s Go to Vegas (F. Hill cover), We Don’t Fight Anymore, Every Little Thing, Country Music Made Me Do It, Truck on Fire, What He Didn’t Do, I Hope You’re Happy Now
Following a brief intermission, fans continued to fill the arena as lights go down and a solid red back drop illuminated the stage. Suddenly, a gargantuan silhouette of a guy in his famous Stetson hat appears and seemingly models for the crowd. The crowd erupts as the backdrop fades and Tim McGraw rises to the stage in Buffalo for the first time since 2019.
An ageless classic, McGraw is outfitted in his typical Stetson hat, tight fitting jeans, and ripped shirt. A musical GQ cover, some might say, is touring to promote his newest album Standing Room Only, released in summer of 2023
With nearly 30 years of music to choose from, the singer/actor delivers an impeccable setlist of classics and new music, with killer light show and animated backdrops changing for each song to tell the story.
Starting off the set, fans are treated to powerful rendition of “Truck Yeah”, a song about living the life of southern boy. The old pick up with blaring music, farm life and chasing the girl.
Rap or country, city farm It don’t matter who you are Got a little fight, got a little love Got a little redneck in your blood Are you one of us?
“Southern Voice” and “All I Want is a Life” round out the first three, and the crowd is just getting warmed up. Going word for word and matching the energy of each song is the game tonight. If only the Sabres could learn something about matching energy.
As I walk off to tuck photo gear and find my seat, the Buffalo faithful are serenaded with bluesy version of Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer”. There aren’t many songs from Elton than can be covered properly, but I’ll damned if McGraw didn’t take it to another level.
As the set continues, McGraw takes a moment to let the crowd know that he does not chatter much during his shows. Explaining why, he says he is married and has daughters. He knows that nobody will listen to him anyway.
Moving on, with songs like “One Bad Habit” and “Watch the Wind Blow By”, the backdrop screen plays videos and images of Tim and his wife, Faith Hill, a testament to his undying love to his wife. Having been married since 1996, they have the marriage that Ross and Rachel only dreamed of. A storybook marriage that has stood the test of time and fame.
Playing the title track from his most recent album, it is a song about living life and making the most of everything. Getting mad at things that don’t matter will get you nowhere, you need to embrace the challenges and make people envious.
Live a life so when I die There’s standing room only, standing room only Standing room only, standing room only
Rounding out his set, Tim comes out for a 3 song encore that is preceded by a video montage of the series 1883, which starred both him and his wife. Accordingly, “The Cowboy in Me” led things off, followed by “Humble and Kind,” and “Live Like You Were Dying”. “Humble and Kind”, although released by McGraw, was written by Lori McKenna as song to her children about everything she wanted her children to know. McGraw was able to put some new melodies to it and took it to the top in 2015. The following year, though, McKenna did release it on her album.
“Live Like You Were Dying” was released in 2004 and although never confirmed it tells about someone who has been stricken with a debilitating sickness. Singing about all the things you never had the chance to do or kept putting off for whatever reason, and now you must find a way to cross those things of the bucket list. A powerful and emotional song to close out the set that undoubtedly left some fans in tears.
Growing up, I was never a fan of country music. My entire family listened to it, except me. I was reluctant to attend a Tim McGraw show in 2004 as part of a marital bargaining chip. That show truly changed my take on country music going forward. Watching Tim and Faith on stage and how broad their talents were something to marvel at. Powerful, thought out lyrics, and amazing stage presence hooked me and now 20 years later, this happens. The world works in mysterious ways.
