  • Murray’s Law Makes Powerful Debut At The Egg in Albany

Sometimes an intimate theater experience can deliver just as big of an impact on a live music fan as a massive arena setting can. Murray’s Law, acoustic duo Brian Murray and Jimmy Law from well-loved jam band Dogs in a Pile, delivered just that, a larger than life sound and overall experience inside the small and cozy Swyer Theatre of The Egg on Sunday evening in Albany, New York.

    murray's law

Superstition strikes as to never miss a sunday show, especially when you can catch such great talent steps away from your apartment. The October 20, 7pm show started just minutes after, with a very gracious and thankful Murray and Law to those in attendance. The small theatre held a tiny but extremely devoted crowd, already releasing cheers and woos of support, eager to hear what the artistic duo had in store. Incredible sound, for one, was obvious almost at an instant and rang true through the two-set night.

Playing as a stripped down acoustic duo made a truly pleasant listening experience, as fans were able to better focus and dial in on the intricacies of their individual sounds as musicians, and further amplified by  the quality of sound in the room. They traded on and off between impressively fast and fun fingerpicking to hard and steady jamming in front of a simple setup of a few tall candles, beautiful, colorful mosaic lamps and endless guitar pedals that eventually lent the audience some fun reverb bouncing off the walls of the Egg.

The night’s setlist was a carefully, and well crafted arrangement of DIAP tunes, covers from american folk and country greats and favored jam bands. John Hartford’s “Joseph’s Dream” opened up the show with easy listening before dropping into the intricate fingerpicking, or “travis picking” stylings of Merle Travis’ “Cannonball Rag”. The already amped up audience got to sample a new Dogs tune titled “Look Johnny II”, sandwiched right in between an expected and wanted Grateful Dead cover, “Jack-A-Roe,” where Law’s raw vocals shined, and an impressive rendition of Jim Croce’s “Walkin’ Back to Georgia.” A collective appreciation swept over the room and while most stayed seated, groups towards the back just couldn’t contain the groove, surrendering, dancing and loudly applauding through the night.

With a nod to the venue being titled the Egg, Murray joked the nut of his guitar fell off and had to be assembled back together like humpty dumpty just seconds before walking on stage. Lighthearted fans joked in response that we got a two-for-one concert/comedy special deal. After a quick break, the guitarists continued to excite the crowd in set two with their own ‘Go Set”, the Dead’s “Cosmic Charlie” and “Lazy Susan,”  a new track Murray penned in Nashville, during a time he just so happened to meet Lucas Nelson. A personal highlight of the show was the heartfelt cover of recently deceased Kris Kristofferson’s “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” and Murray’s emotional vocals that accompanied it. Encore came to wrap up the special evening with a double header of Trey Anastasio Band’s “Ether Sunday” and the Allman Brothers’ “Soulshine.”

With Dogs in a Pile riding high popularity waves in the current scene and a ever-growing Dog Pound of fans, it was a true treat to be able to experience such a remote setting bursting at the seams with talent in musicianship and appreciation by both the duo and fans alike. Be sure to catch the full Dogs in a Pile group at Putnam Place in Saratoga for their New Year’s Run!

  • Hearing Aide: Going Back To Where It All Began by Jeremy Hilliard

Jeremy Hilliard announced the release of his newest album Going Back To Where It All Began which dropped October 4. The full-length album contains 13 tracks, all of which are originals.

    Jeremy Hilliard peak

Jeremy is a songwriter and guitarist living in Brooklyn. He tours regularly with his band PEAK, with whom who he has released 2 studio albums. Right off the bat, the title track “Going Back To Where It All Began” sets the tone for the entirety of the album. Hopeful, upbeat, adventurous and homey are words that describe the overall feel and theme of the track.

“Before Your Love” changes the pace a bit with a more somber and low-tempo sound. You can hear lots of influence from indie-country artists as well as a powerful influence from Tom Petty. Moving onto “Sailor’s Warning,” the track opens with a floaty, indie feel. I’d say this track has a mood somewhere in between the previous two tracks – not quite somber, but not as upbeat – somewhere in between.

    Jeremy Hilliard peak

Going Back To Where It All Began is a very interesting album. Some tracks are more indie-forward while others are certainly folk or country. Some are reminiscent of an indie artist like Tame Impala, others have clear influence from Tom Petty, The Beatles, and others have influence from folk/country artists like Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, and more. I find this level of range to be rather impressive and a testament to Jeremy’s talent.

  • Jelly Roll Beautifully Broken Tour Rolled Into Buffalo

Jelly Roll on the Beautifully Broken tour, with openers Alexandra Kay and Warren Zeiders, rolled into Buffalo KeyBank Center on Sunday, October 6th, bringing a night of healing and good old country vibes on a Fall night.

The night started with independent artist Alexandra Kay. Alexandra Kay is from Waterloo, Missouri, about 40 minutes from St.Louis. She has taken the country scene by storm, having collaborated with some of the most iconic names in the music industry, like Randy Travis, Tim McGraw, and Scott Stapp of Creed, just to name a few. When Alexandra Kay came out, KeyBank Center was electric for her. She had tremendous energy and worked the stage to ensure everyone felt connected.

Warren Zeiders followed up Alexandra Kay. Warren is one of country music’s newest up-and-coming stars. He recently was nominated and won his first CMT Award for “Breakthrough Male Video of the Year.” His fans are eating him up, giving him 7.9 million monthly Spotify listens and 1 billion TikTok views. He continued to bring on that high energy that Alexandra brought to his set. Both Alexandra and Warren were such perfect opening acts to get everyone ready for Jelly Roll.

Before Jelly Roll took the stage in Buffalo, he started a countdown just after Warren Zeiders finished his set. When the countdown reached zero, a video started to play. The video welcomed everyone to the tour and let everyone know to come as they are and, most importantly, that “it’s okay not to be okay” and that this show would be healing and a good time. When the video finished, Jelly Roll started his walk to the B stage on the floor of the sold-out KeyBank Center.

Along the way, he shook hands and said hi to the fans. When he got to the stage, he started singing ‘I Am Not Okay.’ During the song, a metal house silhouette came down, hovering above the stage on fire. After the song, Jelly Roll returned to the main stage and performed ‘Halfway to Hell’ and ‘Get By.’

  • Zach Bryan’s “Oak Island” Music Video Shot in Schenectady

Zach Bryan’s newest music video for “Oak Island” featuring actors Casey Affleck and Jack Martin has recently been released after being filmed in Schenectady this past August.

    zach bryan
    Photo: Zach Bryan

Country singer-songwriter Zach Bryan has channeled his innermost emotions into folk melody, country sound, and raw, cutting lyrics since he came into the public light in 2019. One of many of his first songs to be uploaded onto his YouTube channel, “Heading South” was recorded outside of his Navy barracks by phone only minutes after he had written the song.

The video quickly caught traction and ended up going viral, with just under 30.5 million views as of September 2024.  Since skyrocketing into fame, Bryan has stuck to the same principles that had captured the public, delivering lyrically raw, human songs that leave it all out on the table.

Released on September 10, Zach Bryan’s music video for “Oak Island” delivers the gut wrenchingly human and emotional narratives he’s known for once again. One of 19 tracks from Bryan’s newest album, “Oak Island” tells the story of a jaded older brother with mistakes of his own watching his younger brother fall down the same path.

In “Oak Island,” the narrator is crushed by the realization that the hope he had placed in his younger brother’s future, a brother who had a good head on his shoulders and a better life than his own ahead of him, had thrown it all away and fallen in with a bad crowd. The narrator turns first to resentment for the people that had done this to his brother, which quickly becomes an aching sense of loss as he watches the kid he had grown up with become one of the men he loathes.

Actors Casey Affleck, known for his work in Oppenheimer, Manchester by the Sea, and Interstellar, and Jack Martin portray estranged brothers in the music video’s narrative penned by Bryan and his girlfriend, influencer and Barstool Sports personality Brianna LaPaglia, that pulls heavily from the narrative spun in “Oak Island’s” lyrics.

    zach bryan
    Photo: Youtube

Directed by long-time video collaborator Matthew Dillon Cohen, the music video features multiple careful frames of Schenectady, with local scenes interspersed throughout the narrative. The opening shot in particular features Affleck stepping out of local favorite Mike’s Hot Dogs while making one of many missed calls to his younger brother.

Split by unclear circumstances, the older brother played by Affleck attempts to reach his younger brother, played by Martin, in the hopes of redirecting his life away from less than favorable companions. As with the song’s narrative, the two brothers confront one another- the younger already along his own path, one diverging from everything Affleck believes to be right.

Tensions rise when Affleck pulls Martin out of a bar and goes after one of his brother’s associates, breaking into a fight. The video culminates in a car chase that ends in the two siblings staring at each other on either end of the road interspersed with flashbacks of their childhood, only to reveal that Affleck has been alone on the road this entire time – he had already lost his brother to the path he had walked down.

Bryan is currently on tour for his The Quittin Time Tour 24, with two upcoming dates at the Barclays Center on December 18 and 19. For more information and tickets, visit his website here
