  • Ian McCuen Releases Scathingly Topical Album

Buffalo based singer-songwriter Ian McCuen has returned with their latest release, the utterly emphatic and scathingly topical As the Oceans Rise and the Empire Falls

    ian mccuen

Buffalo-based Ian McCuen has been wowing listeners since 2017 with the release of their debut album Songs of Fleeting Permanence, Vol. I, the next two installations following in 2019.

A master of the soundscape, McCuen is no stranger to telling tales with their musical skill- which is a strength that lends itself perfectly to their latest release, the 22-track album As the Oceans Rise and the Empires Fall.

Utterly cinematic, As the Oceans Rise and the Empires Fall pulls listeners through each and every notion of emotion with an admirable span of instrumentation, tracks full of lyricism and others left purely instrumental- all-encompassing in an admirable and awe-inspiring critique on the state of the United States and its politics today.

“A Fairy Tale for the Obedient” makes deft use of the Omnichord, drawing upon sounds of whimsy and childhood nostalgia alongside haunting horns which carry directly into the simmering brush percussions and foreboding baselines of the instrumental “Indoctrinated, Propagandized.”

The omnichord returns in “I Don’t Know What Will Kill Us First,” this time taking on an undertone of grimness as McCuen ponders which environmental disaster will be the one to finally do us all in over the sounds of acoustic guitar and later horns, which have evolved into a sound almost funerary in sentiment.

“The Intermission” and “The Underture,” unsurprisingly enough mark the midpoint of the album, at which point McCuen takes the time to remind you that as much as their lyrical pieces stun, soundscapes are well within their wheelhouse too.

“Fear & Loathing (in the Home of the Brave),” while certainly not subtle in its messaging, makes a staunch statement regardless. McCuen pulls no punches in critiquing the hypocrisy found in defending the status quo blindly and existing in fear of anything new without interrogating the reason as to why either of those reactions were elicited- as they conclude, “in the home of the brave, it’s all we’ve got.”

They lean fully into the ominous for “A Ghost Story for the Sheltered,” telling a horrifying story of some untold monster that’s sweeping through your town, hunting you down- a haunting parallel to the paranoia kicked up and experienced by the “Sheltered” of America and a striking narrative on fear-mongering and its consequences.

“Death Is a Business and Sales Are Up” is not only incredibly topical but stunningly produced- headphones are highly recommended for this track, as the panning utilized creates an all-encompassing listening experience that’s practically impossible to pause.

The final lyrical track “A Swan Song for Quittin’ Time” feels like a conclusion in every sense of the word. Featuring a line that became the album’s title, this track feels simultaneously hopeful and hopeless, as McCuen struggles to come to terms with the state of the world- even for those with so much fight in them, there comes a point where the draw of nihilistic acceptance is unavoidable.

The song concludes in an anthemic culmination of all of the album’s instrumentation as McCuen accepts the state of the world as one full of strife and struggle, yet finding a determination to go on in the hope for a better future, they sing “just in case, stick around for the encore.”

There’s a certain cognitive dissonance to Ian’s work- if you let yourself be distracted by their calming vocals or gentle instrumentation, you may just miss their scathing critiques on today’s society. Haunting, scathing, and effortlessly engaging, As the Oceans Rise and the Empire Falls captures the full range of emotions felt within and in critique of the United States today.

  • In Focus: Katie Gavin Offers Soulful Simplicity at The Bowery Ballroom

Singer-songwriter Katie Gavin, who rose to fame as lead singer of indie pop trio MUNA, gave a heartfelt performance at The Bowery Ballroom December 10—the first New York show of her solo What a Relief tour.

After an opening set from Liam Benzvi, Gavin strutted on stage to Frank Sinatra’s “(Theme From) New York, New York,” and poured herself a cup of tea before she sat down to tune her guitar. Immediately, the atmosphere in the 575-capacity venue was cozy and personal, as if Gavin was inviting her fans into her living room for a private acoustic show.

Candles flickered and the stage lights warmed as Gavin began her set with “Today,” a soft track that set the tone perfectly for an evening of showcasing her folk-leaning solo record What a Relief.

    Katie Gavin and Nana Adjoa

In contrast to the upbeat pop sound of much of MUNA’s discography, Gavin’s solo project is stripped-down, with an acoustic sound and deeply personal lyrics that highlight her artistic versatility. Throughout the live show, Gavin delivered warm vocals, chatted with the audience like friends, and seamlessly cycled through instruments, trading in her acoustic guitar for everything from the keyboard to the violin to a shruti box.

After playing an additional Bowery Ballroom show December 11 (which featured an appearance by surprise guest Emily Saliers of The Indigo Girls), Gavin will continue on the What A Relief tour through December 18.

Katie Gavin – Bowery Ballroom, Manhattan – December 10, 2024

Setlist: Today, Sparrow, As Good As It Gets (with Liam Benzvi), Casual Drug Use, Inconsolable, Sanitized, Sweet Abby Girl, I Want It All, She Gives Me Feeling, The Baton, Keep Walking, Sketches, Aftertaste

  • Felice Brothers Announce NYE Shows at Assembly

On Dec. 30 and 31, in Kingston, The Felice Brothers, joined by special guest Merce Lemon, will perform two back-to-back shows for a New Year’s Eve celebration. These shows will mark the first-ever performances to be held at the brand-new Assembly concert venue.

    Assembly

The Felice Brothers return to New York after a European tour through the fall in support of their newest album, Valley of Abandoned Songs. The beloved Americana band began with Ian (guitar and lead vocals) and James (multi-instrumentalist and vocals) playing their songs for travelers at home in the Catskills. They have since expanded to include bassist Jesske Hume (Conor Oberst, Jade Bird), the inaugural female member of the Felice Brothers, and drummer Will Lawrence (also a singer/songwriter) as their rhythm section.

Merce Lemon will support the Felice Brothers at their shows in the Northeast. Following the release of her stunning 2024 album, Watch Me Drive Them Dogs Wild, Lemon’s pairing with the Brothers is a wonderful combination that blends her alt-country sound with the Brothers’ mellower, folky style. If you like the Felice Brothers, you’ll love Merce Lemon.

Located in Kingston’s vibrant Uptown/Stockade District, Assembly Kingston is poised to become a cornerstone of the region’s burgeoning arts and culture scene. These New Year’s Eve performances will be a special homecoming for the band, who will take the stage to ring in 2025 with their signature blend of folk, rock, and heartfelt storytelling.

“Friends and loved ones, we are doing it again! Holiday shows!” the Felice Brothers share, “Some old favorites and a NEW never before rocked venue in Kingston NY. Now you know what you’re doing to close out 2024.”

  • The Upstart Crows Release Gritty Single “House Fire”

The Brooklyn-based alternative rock band The Upstart Crows have returned with their newest single “House Fire” on the frustrations of the creative process ahead of their upcoming EP.

Rooted in Brooklyn, The Upstart Crows have brought their unique combination of folk, punk, and Americana sounds throughout New York City and beyond in live shows spanning haunting acoustic solo performances to the full effect of a rock unit.

Debuting in 2018 with a 12 track self-titled album, The Upstart Crows have been performing live shows and honing their sound among a small set of single releases since they formally emerged on the scene.

Now back and better than ever, the band has returned with new music in the form of the single “House Fire”.

Penned during the Covid-19 Pandemic, “House Fire” captures a unique frustration felt by creatives when it seems as though no part of the act of creation is going your way.

With fast-paced and hard hitting drums, insistent guitar lines, and vocals that compliment the oscillating bass line, “House Fire” is a stellar example of how indulging in the negative can not only relieve personal stress but result in a work exploding with emotion.

“The song is about the self-doubt doom spirals we all face when we are working on something… Where you start to question your own taste and ability to make something good.”

One of many parts of the Crows’ upcoming EP slated for the spring, “House Fire” marks a promising start to the next era of The Upstart Crows.

  • Gina Birch Releases Christmas Themed Yoko Ono Cover

On Nov. 13, Gina Birch, founding member of influential punk band The Raincoats, released a cover of Yoko Ono‘s “Listen, The Snow is Falling” through Jack White‘s Third Man Records.

The single, written by Ono and recorded with the Plastic Ono Band, was originally released as the b-side of John Lennon’s 1971 single “Happy Xmas (War is Over).” This single marks Birch’s first release since her solo debut album, I Play My Bass Loud, in 2023.

    Gina Birch

In 2023, Birch, with bandmates Marie Merlet and Jenny Green, chose to play “Listen, the Snow is Falling” at Tate Britain during the Yoko Ono exhibition. Birch thought it would be great to play one of Ono’s songs during the performance even though it was August.

Feeling particularly connected to Ono at the time, Birch selected the song for its haunting beauty, noting that it was released as a b-side. “Who doesn’t love a b-side?” she remarked. Birch had also been asked to write about Yoko Ono for the Tate magazine and had recently painted a full-length portrait of her for her exhibition featuring “Goddesses and Inspirations” at Gallery 46.

Inspired by the performance, Merlet suggested they record the song as a Christmas single. Birch noted that she had never made a Christmas single before, making it feel particularly fitting. They recorded it in Birch’s basement, collaboratively coming up with ideas. The track was mixed by Merlet and then mastered by Warren Defever at Third Man Mastering in Detroit.

In addition to a headlining tour in the UK, Birch has supported artists like Yo La Tengo, Sleater-Kinney, and This Is The Kit. She was also part of Tate Britain’s high-profile exhibition “Women in Revolt,” which celebrated 20 years of feminist art and activism. Her piece, “3 Minute Scream” (1977), was showcased as the poster image for the exhibition.

  • The Worst Night Of Your Life With hannah bahng

hannah bahng brought her sold-out debut Abysmal Tour to Mercury Lounge on December 5, promising to deliver “The Worst Night Of Your Life”.

Self-written, self-composed, and co-produced, hannah bahng is a multitalented artist with the skill and vision to realize every facet of her creative endeavors with evident care and precision. Hailing from Sydney, Australia, 20 year old bahng entered the music sphere with the perfectly nostalgic, sea-salt tinged “perfect blues” and its slightly hazier, dreamy counterpart “OLeander” on July 14, 2023.

Since the dual-single release, bahng has seen a meteoric rise in popularity, and certainly for good reason. Releasing her debut The Abysmal EP on May 31 produced in partnership with Andrew Luce, bahng delivered a total of seven tracks that cut deep sonically and lyrically, pulling listeners through each and every emotion with vibrant intensity.

This same intensity was on full display at the Mercury Lounge on December 5, one of several shows of bahng’s first ever tour which very quickly sold out and saw various venue upgrades due to a widespread hope to experience what was marketed as “the worst night of your life.”

This sentiment was equally felt in line outside the venue and within its doors, the warm lights of the Mercury Lounge twinkling invitingly as fans meandered their way inside.

Concert-goers could be found excitedly waiting in line for bahng’s adorably curated merchandise or exchanging homemade goods like bracelets and photocards just outside the entrance (the latter a tradition emerging from the K-Pop scene, which has since evidently bled into tangential spaces and beyond)- all various shades of blue in a lovely nod to her debut single.

Chatting with other fans proved effortless as everyone shared an intangible undercurrent of knowledge that something special was about to happen- after all, the Mercury Lounge marked the historic third show bahng has ever performed in the professional sphere following two dates in Texas.

And, as hannah herself would mention later in the evening, it marked her first ever performance in New York after visiting the city as a songwriter and audience member prior.

As bahng took the stage, the energy was electric. Opening the similar form to her Abysmal EP, she delivered a captivating performance of “OLeander” followed by a gut wrenching rendition of the deeply personal “hannah interlude” which was written while bahng was visiting New York out of a rented studio.

Similarly, the unreleased “Ribs” features bahng and a piano in a moment so deeply vulnerable it was as if the entire space around her took a moment to pause and listen in.

    hannah bahng

Between tracks, the intimacy of the venue resulted in an almost conversational rapport between hannah and the audience in which fans showered her in compliments, asked about her Pokémon jacket- custom made by a friend in the audience- and learned that her favorite Pokémon of the franchise is the definitively underrated cubone.

I’d also be remiss to not mention the vicious Rubiks Cube battle that occurred on stage. A lovely audience member went head to head with bahng in a tense battle of wits, and hannah reigned victorious- but not before passing off her newly signed cube to the audience participant with a hug and cheers from the crowd.

    hannah bahng

More hard hitting tracks followed, including the bass-heavy “POMEGRANATE” and the unreleased “What Never Lived” that mourns the death of a relationship that never quite happened, which quickly grew to be a personal favorite.

Tracks of her own weren’t all that hannah had to offer, either. Covers of Chase Atlantic’s “Church” and Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On A Prayer” came next, the former a favorite of bahng’s that she explained was performed to balm the lack of the track at a Chase Atlantic concert she had attended, and the latter for the parents in the audience- though, as a nearly twenty-something myself, I found myself thanking my father’s influence on my music taste as I belted along.

    hannah bahng

As bahng bowed out for the evening, the cool blues of the lights faded to a dim gray- but this did nothing to deter the audience, who promptly jumped into cheers asking for just “one more song,” to which hannah delivered. Returning for a vibrant performance of “perfect blues,” the carefree joy felt in the room was tangible.

A room full of folks young and old gathered to celebrate the promising start of something beautiful, singing in tandem to the first song of her professional career- the promising creative sway of hannah bahng was in full effect as her first official concert in New York came to an end.

  • Bad Mary and Mega Infinity Release “Mega Bad Disaster Party”

Long Island bands Bad Mary and Mega Infinity have teamed up through SPI (Ska Punk International), to release a split 7-inch single, “Mega Bad Disaster Party.” Each band contributed two newly recorded tracks. The single will be released digitally on Dec. 3, with a vinyl release party on Feb. 21 at Industry in Huntington.

    Mega Bad Disaster Party

“Mega Bad Disaster Party” begins with two songs from Mega Infinity, “Eyelids 2024” and “Let Me Drive My Van Into Your Heart” followed by “Disaster(er) Party” and “Want What I Want” from Bad Mary. The collection of songs sounds like if Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was a Broadway Musical.

Bad Mary reached out to SPI about doing an EP and adding some ska elements to their songs. SPI suggested collaborating with Mega Infinity, since they’ve been friends with Mega for a decade, the collaboration was a no-brainer. Many of the songs on the single are rerecorded and reimagined versions of songs from previous projects. These new versions are cleaner, more aggressive, and harder-hitting.

“Eyelids” was written for an EP several years ago, drawing inspiration from ska-punk, riot grrrl, and bands like Catch 22, Veruca Salt, and Big D. Joystick! is featured on the song, enhancing its ska-punk influences. “Disaster(er) Party” was originally titled “Disaster Party” and was written for The Return of Space Girl. For this single, the song has been reimagined with horns added by Kevin Jackson from Title Holder and Crisis Crayons.

Bad Mary consists of Amanda Mac (vocals), Mike Staub (bass/vocals), Bill Mac (drums), and David Henderson (guitar). They have received airplay on SiriusXM’s Underground Garage, earning the New Music Spotlight. The band has released two albums and six EPs since 2014 including their 2019 album, The Return of Space Girl that inspired an award-winning animated movie. Their latest release, Better(er) Days, arrived in 2024.

Mega Infinity is comprised of Michi and Mike DiGiulio. The band released their EP Behind Glass Walls in 2017 and their debut album Rainbow Heartache in December 2021. They joined SPI with their 2023 EP Chaos Magick, which was named a favorite by Punk News and On the Upbeat. They are featured in the ska documentary This is New Tone as a part of ska punk’s future.

  • Interpol sells out NYC for their 20th Anniversary of “Antics.”

There’s something about anniversary shows that really gets a crowd going. Pressed against each other in the pit, hands swaying, chanting in time to favorite songs. What better way to celebrate 20 years of Interpol’s Antics than a 3-day sold out show at Brooklyn Steel? Longtime fans gathered for opening night on December 3. Ready to revel in the gritty, driving force of rich guitar playing and powerful lyricism.

Lead guitarist Daniel Kessler, of Interpol

Around since 1997, Interpol was formed under New York University doors, beginning with lead guitarist Daniel Kessler, frontman Paul Banks and drummer Greg Drudy. Their post-punk sound has become a staple amongst New Yorkers, emerging as a key rock revivalist of the early 2000s. In hopes to sound sleek and mysterious, they derived their name from The International Police Association, signing with Matador Records in 2002. Now, Interpol has played at a multitude of venues across the world, joined by Sam Fogarino on the drums.

Interpol's frontman Paul Banks, preforming at Brooklyn Steel

With white sheer curtains draped across the front, a hush fell over the crowd as Interpol took stage a few minutes past 9:15pm. Opening with “Next Exit”, the band remained obscured. The crowd focused on projections of their silhouettes, jumping back and forth across the curtains. Once their second song, “Evil” reached crescendo, the lighting crew scrambled into the photo pit. The crew pulled back the expansive white sheet to reveal the band, dressed to the nines in black tailored suits.

After every song, fans whooped and hollered, dazed by the thick smoke and dramatic strobe lights. Lush storytelling balanced out catchy choruses, pairing with intricate guitar riffs to make a visually immersive performance. Their iconic color scheme of black, white and red alongside a sharp typeface held true. Non stop energy created through intriguing lighting choices and special effects.

As Interpol performed fan favorites such as “C’mere” and “Rest my Chemistry” the crowd pushed forward to the edge of the barricade, unable to peel their eyes off of the stage. By the time the 21 song setlist came to a close, the venue was absolutely packed. Reveling in the rush, fans lingered in the pit, chatting excitedly while sharing videos and treasured moments.
