  • Governors Ball Day 3: Kevin Abstract, Chappell Roan, SZA, And More

    Governors Ball 2024 wrapped up Day 3 on Sunday, June 9, with a vibrant celebration of music and powerful performances. Sunday was a powerhouse for the pop world, highlighting queer artists this Pride Month, like Chappell Roan and Reneé Rapp.

    Husbands kicked off the day on the IHG Stage with their indie rock sound characterized by distorted guitars and a dancey vibe. The crowd couldn’t help but boogie along, setting a lively tone for the rest of the day.

    Elyanna, the Palestinian-Chilean singer-songwriter, captivated the audience with her soulful voice and unique blend of Middle Eastern and Latin influences. Her performance was a beautiful display of cultural fusion, offering a refreshing and authentic experience to festival-goers.

    G Flip rocked the IHG Stage with their energetic performance. The highlight of the set was when Lauren Sanderson made a surprise appearance, joining G Flip on stage and sending the crowd into a frenzy. Their chemistry and stage presence created a memorable and electrifying atmosphere.

    Baby Queen made her U.S. festival debut on the GoPuff Stage with a high-energy set that included “Quarter Life Crisis,” “I Can’t Get My Shit Together,” and “Buzzkill.” Her performance, marked by shredding on a pink guitar, was both raw and empowering. She hyped the crowd by asking, “Who’s getting drunk today? Well, this is a song about getting fucked up,” before launching into “Raw Thoughts.” Baby Queen’s message, “I want you all to remember you can be whatever you want to be,” resonated deeply with the audience.

    Malcolm Todd brought a wave of nostalgia by opening with the iconic iCarly theme. His set featured chill vibes and impressive guitar solos, including a memorable performance of TLC’s “Waterfalls” on the catwalk. He expressed his excitement to open for Chappell Roan and wished everyone a “Happy Pride Month,” sharing his love for the community.

    Also on the Gopuff stage, Kevin Abstract – known for his work with Brockhampton – delivered an introspective and engaging performance. His set was a mix of humor and heartfelt moments. He engaged with fans by reading signs, including quirky messages like “I’m severely constipated” and “gays only event.” His performance included solo tracks “Empty” and “Tennessee,” as well as Brockhampton favorites “BUZZCUT” and “STAR,” creating a dynamic and engaging set.

    Chappell Roan’s performance was one of the most anticipated of the day. Fans chanted her name for five minutes before she took the stage, dressed as the Statue of Liberty. Her set began with “Femininomenon,” followed by “Naked in Manhattan” and “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl.” She said, “Today I am in drag of the biggest queen of all,” referring to her Statue of Liberty outfit.

    Chappell used her costume to deliver a powerful message, quoting the inscription on the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” She elaborated, “That means freedom and trans rights, freedom and women’s rights, freedom for all people in oppressed territories,” giving meaning and symbolism beyond just being a “NY Icon.”

    After a costume change to match her band’s taxi print, she debuted a new song, further thrilling the crowd. Before performing “Casual,” she explained her outfit change and showed off boots emblazoned with “1-800-ROAN” and checkered gloves. The set concluded with the fan-favorite “Pink Pony Club,” leaving the crowd ecstatic and chanting her name long after she left the stage.

    René Rapp’s performance continued the Pride celebrations with a powerful and visually stunning set. Wearing a jersey with “culture” on the back, she opened with “Talk Too Much” and energized the crowd with pyrotechnics. She declared, “Happy Pride everyone! We’re so visible it’s sickening. We viz, we viz, we 4k.”

    Rapp’s setlist included “Poison Poison,” “Bruises,” and “Pretty Girls,” during which she prompted the crowd, “If you’re a pretty girl, put your hands up!” She engaged warmly with fans, including a heartfelt interaction with a fan named Sam: “What’s your name, baby?” she asked. “Well, Sam, I need you to hear me when I say you’re one of the prettiest girls out here.”

    Introducing her band members, Rapp quipped, “Seldom will I celebrate a man, but today I will.” She wrapped up her performance with “Tummy Hurts” and “In the Kitchen,” dedicating the latter to theater kids and describing it as her “theatrical ballad.” She closed her set with an exuberant shout-out: “Can I get a round of applause for lesbians?” and did a funky little dance, leaving the crowd with smiles and a sense of unity.

    Peso Pluma brought his signature style to the GoPuff Stage, delivering a performance that resonated deeply with fans. His set was marked by powerful vocals and a commanding presence, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.

    Don Toliver’s set on the GoPuff Stage was a high-energy affair, featuring new and familiar hits. He debuted his new song “Tore Up,” which was met with enthusiastic approval from the crowd. Other highlights included performances of “Bus Stop,” “Smoke,” and “Attitude,” showcasing his versatility and charisma.

    SZA closed out the festival on the GovBallNYC Stage with a breathtaking performance. Her setlist included fan favorites such as “Low,” “Normal Girl,” “Kiss Me More,” “Snooze,” “Kill Bill,” and “The Weekend.” Each song showcased her incredible vocal range and emotional depth. The audience was mesmerized by her soulful renditions and the raw emotion she brought to each performance.

    Day 3 of Governors Ball 2024 was a testament to the power of live music to bring people together, celebrating diversity, creativity, and the sheer joy of performance. Each artist brought their unique energy to the stage, leaving fans with memories to cherish until next year’s festival.

    With 2024 come and gone, we can start speculating about next year. The choice to continue at Flushing Meadows Park was a major success. The lushness of the park continues to prove to be the perfect venue for this festival; with large fields and thick trees providing shade to camping festival goers.

  • Governors Ball Day 2: Sabrina Carpenter, Hippo Campus, The Killers, And More

    Governors Ball 2024 kicked off bright and early for Day 2 on Saturday, June 8, continuing the party from Day 1 at Flushing Meadows Park. Once the gate reopened to the masses, music fans ran to stake out their spots in anticipation of all the talent Saturday had to offer.

    On the IHG Stage, Little Stranger from Charleston, SC delivered a funky, high-energy set with distorted guitar riffs and vibey trumpet and saxophone backups. Their indie rap-pop style shone through in songs like “Coffee & a Joint,” resonating well with the crowd. The playful and fun performance featured futuristic yet relaxed synth sounds, with lead vocalist Kevin Shields joking, “everything’s legal so you can do whatever you want today, I heard it from the governor himself*.” Their set was full of banter, hyping up later acts like Sexxy Red and keeping the audience engaged and entertained.

    The GovBallNYC Stage saw a dynamic start with New York City-based indie rock band Telescreens played a hometown show that drew out a dedicated early crowd. Fans went hard in the pit during “Don’t Feel Nothing,” and the band expressed excitement about finally playing their first festival after seven years together. The set closed with a circle pit and moshing, capturing the raw energy of the fans.

    Following up, Quarters of Change, whose experimental alternative rock blended seamlessly with melodic hip hop, setting a high-energy tone for the day. Following them, Jessie Murph captivated the audience with her unique country pop sound, delivering heartfelt performances that resonated deeply with fans.

    As the sun began to set on Day 2 of Governors Ball 2024, Hippo Campus took over the IHG Stage, bringing their indie pop folk sound to life. The Minnesota band delivered a series of hits including “Ride or Die,” “Everything at Once,” and “Bad Dream Baby.” Their witty banter, including comments like “your parents may not love you but Hippo Campus loves you,” endeared them to the crowd, creating a fun and lively atmosphere.

    Over at the GoPuff Stage, Riovaz kept the momentum going with an engaging set, while Bakar’s performance stood out with his cover of “Dancing in the Moonlight,” and powerful renditions of “3 Nights” (a Dominic Fike cover), “Stop Selling Her Drugs,” and “Hell N Back.” His experimental indie rock sound had the crowd hooked from start to finish.

    Doechii took the GoPuff Stage by storm with a fiery hip-hop/rap set, featuring viral hits like “Bitch I’m Nice,” “Crazy,” “What it Is,” and the song that put her on the map, “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake.” She also introduced the crowd to her unreleased track, “Sweat,” showcasing her versatility and leaving fans eager for more.

    Sexyy Red continued the hip-hop/rap vibes, delivering a performance full of attitude and energy, while P1Harmony made history on the IHG Stage as the first Kpop boyband to ever perform at Gov Ball. Their electrifying set included songs like “Emergency,” “Everybody Clap,” “Heartbeat Drum,” “Killin’ It,” and “Back Down,” captivating a dedicated audience with their synchronized choreography and powerful vocals.

    Carly Rae Jepsen brought a burst of energy to the GovBallNYC Stage, drawing fans from all corners of the festival grounds. Her performance of “Call Me Maybe” sparked a massive sing-along that echoed across the festival grounds, while a mix of older favorites like “I Really Like You” and newer hits like “The Loneliest Time” showcased her enduring appeal. Carly even ventured into the crowd, amplifying the excitement and connection with her fans.

    Sabrina Carpenter drew one of the largest crowds of the day on this very same stage. Her performance featured a mix of hits like “Feather,” “Vicious,” and “Already Over,” complemented by talented backup dancers and heart-themed stage decor. Her heartfelt introduction to “Already Over” highlighted her appreciation for New York’s unique musical culture, stating, “New York is one of the best cities in the world to play music because you’ve figured music out in a way that hasn’t been studied by science yet.” This sentiment resonated deeply with the audience.

    Sabrina’s set showcased a wide range of her musical repertoire, from heartfelt ballads to high-energy pop hits. Fans of all ages, from young teens to older adults, were enthralled by her performance. Before singing “Fast Times,” she urged the audience to “Throw your phones in the river, I want you to be present,” encouraging everyone to fully immerse themselves in the moment.

    One of the most iconic moments however, came before “Because I Liked a Boy.” Sabrina asked the crowd to chant “I’m a slut” on the count of three, creating a powerful, unifying experience. She also teased her upcoming album, Short and Sweet, exciting fans with the promise of new music. The set concluded with a playful faux exit before her signature song “Nonsense.” The crowd eagerly awaited her return, and Sabrina delivered with a unique, city-specific ending that left the audience buzzing.

    The Killers closed out the night with a stellar rock performance. Celebrating 20 years of coming to New York, they delivered classics like “Jenny Was a Friend of Mine” and “Read My Mind.” A fan summed it up perfectly, saying, “this is some real ass rock and roll.” The night ended on a high note with “Mr. Brightside,” leaving everyone in awe of the surreal experience.

  • Governors Ball 2024 Kicks Off With Arcy Drive, Post Malone, Dominic Fike, and more 

    Governors Ball 2024 took off bright and early on Friday, June 7, launching their second year at the new festival site at Flushing Meadows Park. By the time “New York’s biggest party” opened the gates at 11:45am, music fans had been lined up for hours in anticipation of Friday’s biggest names.

    On the GovballNYC Main stage, School of Rock Queens delivered an energetic and diverse cover-filled performance with a setlist that included “Beat It”, “Voulez-Vous”, “I’m Not Okay”, and “Locked Out of Heaven”. The show featured a diverse cast of characters, including a unique tambourine player, and showcased a myriad of covers led by different female vocalists for each song. Following them up, Minnesota rock band Durry delivered a high-energy performance that captivated the audience from start to finish. Their gritty guitar riffs and powerful vocals resonated through the venue, creating an electric atmosphere.

    Early on over at the GoPuff stage, fans were treated to Long Island locals Arcy Drive. They brought their unique blend of rocky indie beach vibes to the stage with a standout performance. Featuring a pioneering female drummer, the band infused their set with a laid-back yet energetic atmosphere. They captivated the audience with a mix of their signature sound and the debut of a mysterious new song from their upcoming album. Right after their set, Qveen Herby dazzled the audience with her striking look and vibrant sound, seamlessly blending hip-hop and pop elements. Her sharp lyrics and dynamic stage presence had the crowd hooked from the first beat.

    Following Qveen Herby, the atmosphere shifted once more as Yung Gravy took to the GoPuff stage, sporting a floral detailed suit that perfectly matched his new era. He delighted the crowd with “certified Gravy Classics” like “Betty (Get Money)” and “Welcome to Chili’s,” alongside fresh, unreleased tracks (including “Back On The Horse” and “Lone Ranger”) from his upcoming country-inspired album. During “Oops!!!,” he playfully switched the usual lyric “Tracy with the ass?” to “Tracy from Queens?” in a nod to Gov Ball’s enthusiastic audience, making the performance even more memorable.

    Over at the IHG Stage, British pop girl group FLO delivered a performance reminiscent of The Cheetah Girls, complete with stunning vocal runs and harmonies that could go on for days. They brought their set to a triumphant close with their iconic track “Cardboard Box,” leaving the crowd buzzing for when Teezo Touchdown took over.

    His electrified set kicked off with “Careful” that was both visually and musically captivating. With a floral-stylized microphone in hand, he delivered a powerful rendition of his hit “SUCKA!” and brought the metaphorical house down with a unique cover of Tyler, the Creator’s “RUNITUP.”

    Back over on the GovBall NYC Stage, Ryan Beatty’s performance was a seamless blend of smooth modern rock and indie pop, showcasing his undeniable star potential. With a voice like silk, he captivated the audience, even using a theremin-like instrument to add a unique touch to his set. Sporting his signature headphones, he dedicated a song to his longtime fans, saying, “This one’s for the OGs, if you’ve lasted this long, bless you.” To quote the great Ryan Beatty himself: “We’re just getting started”.

    As the day kept chugging along, the energy built throughout the festival grounds. Back on the GovBallNYC Main Stage, Dominic Fike rocks up with a performance full of memorable moments and musical highlights. He made his grand entrance with his sister Apple on his shoulders, marking his second Gov Ball appearance. Rocking cool shades and bleached eyebrows, Dominic declared, “NY I am inside you,” and complimented the city’s beauty, especially its women, which sent the crowd into a frenzy.

    He reminisced about filming a music video in New York with Paul McCartney for “The Kiss of Venus” and kept the energy high with playful banter. He praised the crowd, saying, “this place rules, you guys are cool as hell,” before performing “Mona Lisa” from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, humorously pointing out his brother in the crowd, telling people to “throw sh*t at him”.

    Dominic’s voice shone through as he introduced new tracks from his EP 14 Minutes, including “coast2coast” and “misses.” He shared a vulnerable moment about creating “misses” during a low point, expressing gratitude to his fans for boosting his self-confidence: “Thank you for instilling some self-confidence in me.”

    As the sun set and the energy peaked, Post Malone absolutely brought down the house with his  masterclass in blending classical elegance with modern rock energy. The set began with a captivating cello intro, featuring intricate strings that seamlessly transitioned into electrifying guitar shredding, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience.

    As soon as the opening string chords resonated, festival-goers sprinted from all corners of the grounds to witness the spectacle. The moment Post walked up, the night sky exploded with fireworks and intense pyro, amplifying the crowd’s excitement and creating a visually stunning backdrop for his electrifying set, a fitting end to Day 1 of Governors Ball 2024.

  • The Dead Daisies Light up Racket NYC on the First Night of US tour

    On Thursday, June 6, the humid New York City air blew in hard rock band The Dead Daisies. With a new record titled, Light ‘Em Up, slated to be released in September, the band kicked off their US tour at Racket NYC.

    The band consists of Tommy Clufetos on drums, Michael Devin on bass, Dave Lowy and Doug Aldrich on guitars with John Corabi on lead vocals. The former Mötley Crüe lead vocalist is replacing former singer and bassist Glenn Hughes. Prior to the night’s show, Corabi joined me via Zoom to talk about the new release.     Before The Dead Daisies hit the stage, there were two supporting acts. The first act was a local New York group called Tempt. The quartet played a total of seven songs and made it memorable. Between the power pop rock and catchy tunes, their set was enjoyable and they quickly won the crowd over with their charisma and young energy. Tempt promptly set the pace for the rest of the evening.

    Sometimes it’s difficult for a new band to win a crowd that is there solely to see the headliners. Yet, this didn’t seem to be the issue. From the first note of “Living Dangerous” which was released as a single in 2021, their well-oiled rock and roll machine seemed to run without any sign of slowing down. It was great to see such a young band take the 650-person venue – who at the time were still filing in – and treat it as Madison Square Garden. Their energy was the most notable and they never seemed to be bored, they fully were in the moment and treated it as such.

    After a beautiful rendition of Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” another New York City band, Killcode jumped on stage. The five-piece band brought a different style from Tempt. Killcode’s sound consisted of hard rock with a southern twang. The band played a total of seven original songs throughout their set. Two songs in their set appeared on their newest record, 2023’s Life, Death, Rock n’ Roll. While the smaller stage was crowded with the five members, they were able to use the small piece of real estate to put on a captivating show.

    Throughout the set, the band prowled along the stage and after a song or two, won the crowd over. For the members of the audience that knew the band, they were cheering for their favorite songs, singing and dancing while the band played deeper into their set. The duel guitars on stage created a monster wall of sound yet complemented each other at the same time. The last song that Killcode played was “Kickin’ and Screamin’” off of 2018’s The Answer. By the time the last chorus swung around, the audience was singing along with the band before they took their final bow.

    After a brief load out of Killcode’s gear, the house lights dimmed and Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll” blasted into the speakers. In a matter of minutes, the band jumped on stage and blasted into their first song of the night and newest single, “Light ‘Em Up.” With a record set to be released in September of the same name, the band played multiple songs off of the forthcoming record in addition to a blues number that was recorded during the sessions at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio.

    Throughout the evening the band crisscrossed through their entire discography and played songs throughout their entire career. This included several songs from the Hughes era. Three songs total were played from Radiance and Holy Ground including, “Born to Fly,” “Unspoken” and “Bustle and Flow.” It was great to see the band, especially Corabi acknowledge Hughes. Corabi’s vocals were excellent. Throughout his classic raspy register, his vocals pierced through fans while he was perched at the edge of the stage.

    Aldrich and Lowy were the guitar masters flanking the stage and throughout the evening, they brought the energy. Lowy was running around the stage the entire night and never stood still. Aldrich plowed through solo after solo. At one point, Aldrich crept to the edge of the stage, kneeled and soloed right in front of the general admission section.

    Rounding out the rest of the group was Devin on bass who officially joined the band when Hughes left. Hammering away on the drums the entire night was Clufetos who, most recently, filled in for Tommy Lee in Mötley Crüe when Lee injured himself. At one point, a fan turned to another and said “he [Clufetos] is a monster on the drums.” It seemed that no matter how hard Clufetos beat the drums, he never seemed to break a sweat. Clufetos during his drum solo was hitting them so hard that the vibrations could be felt in fans’ chests as they watched in awe.

    It was amazing to see how interactive the band was with the fans, throughout the night, in between songs and jokes from Corabi, the band tossed guitar picks and waved to familiar faces in the audience. As the band was introducing themselves, they would quickly jam in between announcements to tunes like “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” and “Seven Nation Army.” Each jam session was met with thunderous applause from the fans who sang along with Corabi and sang the guitar riffs as well. The band was as versatile as ever as they played multiple covers including the final song, “Helter Skelter,” by The Beatles.

    Throughout the 17-song set, if they could, it seemed like the band would never stop. They rarely stopped in between songs – which were accompanied by a giant video screen behind them. Throughout each song, a different video was played which further enhanced the audience’s experiences as they showed the band throughout the years. Despite the venue only holding 650 people, the band treated it as if it were a festival or stadium. Their energy and charisma on the stage seemed like they could have blown the doors off the venue and after the encore, fans still stuck around the stage just in case the band came back on.

    New York City was the perfect city to host the first night of the band’s tour. The energy of the band mixed with the energy of the fans – which grew over the night – created a rock and roll cathedral. Some fans were making the trek to the group’s next show while other fans immediately flocked to the merch table. After the legendary Rolling Stones show at Racket NYC, The Dead Daisies followed up with a legendary show of their own.

  • Belmont on Broadway: Blues Traveler Brings Huge Crowds to Saratoga Springs

    The first ever Belmont Festival in Saratoga Springs kicked off in grand fashion on Wednesday night, June 5th.  Ahead of the historic weekend, concert goers turned out by the thousands for the official opening, a block party dubbed ‘Belmont on Broadway’ headlined by the Grammy Award winning rock band Blues Traveler. 

    Often referred to as “the Summer place to be,” the enthusiastic atmosphere could be felt all over the city. Propelled by the distinct voice of the legendary John Popper and his scorching array of harmonicas and harmonies, the good-time vibes were off the charts, contagious and perhaps a little rowdy.

    With the six-day festival expected to bring the Spa City more than $50 million in revenue, the massive crowds also meant massive business for the local shops and restaurants downtown.  People of all ages lined every inch and stoop of Broadway, arriving early to catch the opening set from eight-piece local rock and soul ensemble Tops of Trees. With a steady influx of concertgoers packing in like sardines by the time the charismatic Pat McGee Band took the stage, it was Grade A entertainment all around as friends, families, and strangers stood shoulder-to-shoulder, sweaty and smiling on this humid summer night in early June.

    With stellar production services provided by the fine folks at High Peaks Production, the overall program ran incredibly smooth and both looked and sounded great from the start. After a brief word from organizers, the winners of the Belmont on Broadway window decoration contest were announced as Heidi Owen West and Stacey D’Andrea-Goodman of the Lifestyles of Saratoga boutique. Clearing the stage shortly after 8pm, it was finally time for the band everybody came out to see.

    Once ruling the radio with chart toppers from their massive, multi-platinum selling album Hook, the beloved improv-heavy rockers from Princeton, New Jersey, Blues Traveler proved they still know how to party like it’s 1994.  No stranger to headlining festivals, the band is credited as the driving force behind the original H.O.R.D.E. (Horizons of Rock Developing Everywhere) festival that successfully toured the country from 1992 to 1998, including memorable stops at SPAC just up the road. Once again playing up to a massive crowd all these years later, Blues Traveler hit them with hits early and often.

    Consisting of harmonica wizard and band leader John Popper, along with guitarist Chan Kinchla, bassist Tad Kinchla, keyboard player Ben Wilson and drummer Brandon Hill, Blues Traveler opened with perhaps their most popular song, “Run-Around” resulting in city-wide sing-along that’s still reverberating somewhere down Caroline Street.  Demonstrating their propensity to jam, Popper would catch fire early, utilizing his signature array of custom harmonicas to blow the audience away on a “Dropping Some NYC” > “Moby Dick” > “NY Prophesie” sandwich.

    Dressed in a familiar floppy-brimmed hat and looking as healthy as he has in years, the band would find it’s lengthiest groove on the psychedelic Kingpin rocker “But Anyway,” while fans then took the opportunity to spark up during a cover of Tom Petty’s “Mary Janes’s Last Dance.” The heartfelt “Mountains Win Again” was perhaps the most emotional song of the evening, followed up by perhaps the funkiest in a cover of the Son Seals classic, “Funky Bitch,” which many fans often confuse as a Phish original.

    Segueing nicely into an equally funky “War Pigs” keyboard jam before alligator-ing at breakneck speed into a ferocious, foot stomping rendition of “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” (which the band humorously changed to “The Devil Went Down to Saratoga”), the melodic interplay between Popper and Chad Kinchla’s colorful guitar solos would shine bright all night long, but especially on 1997’s “Carolina Blues.”

    Gracefully dipping off stage while each member of the band was given the chance to solo in the spotlights, Popper would lead Blues Traveler through the remainder of the set that combined an easy melodic flow crossed with a plethora of choice cover songs and sophisticated soul-funk boogie. With highlights that also included teases of Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher” and Aerosmith’s “Eat the Rich,” Blues Traveler would bring the main portion of the set to a close with a massive sing along to their smash hit “Hook.”

    With the curfew rapidly approaching and the enthusiastic Spa City crowd still eating it up and begging for more, the band would insight the famous “Toga” chant from the Animal House film, before encoring with one final cover, ZZ Top’s “La Grange.” A great evening of music powered by a band that’s stood the test of time, the atmosphere in downtown Saratoga Springs was downright electric and made you hope ‘the powers that be’ will take notice and introduce more events like this one in the future.     Up next for the band, Blue Traveler will take the rest month off before returning to the legendary Red Rocks in Morrison, CO for their annual 4th of July throwdown. Later this August, you can catch them back in New York with a pair of dates at Lewiston Artpark and the Perinton Center Park Amphitheater in Fairport.

  • 13th Annual Bushwick Collective Block Party: A Vibrant Fusion of Art and Hip-Hop Headlined By Raekwon

    On June 1, the streets of Bushwick, Brooklyn, came alive with the sights and sounds of the 13th Annual Bushwick Collective Block Party. Thousands of attendees gathered at the intersection of Troutman Street and St. Nicholas Avenue to celebrate this iconic free street art and hip-hop festival. This year’s event once again transformed the neighborhood into a vibrant canvas of artistic expression.

    The Bushwick Collective: A Community Pillar

    The Bushwick Collective, an outdoor art gallery and collective located has been a cornerstone of the neighborhood since its inception in 2012. Founded by Joe Ficalora, the Collective was born from a personal journey of loss and healing. After his mother’s death, Ficalora channeled his grief into transforming an industrial stretch of Brooklyn into an internationally renowned art destination. The Collective began with a single wall donated by a neighborhood resident and quickly expanded as other local building owners offered up their walls to street artists from around the globe.

    This year’s Block Party featured the work of 57 artists who had been painting new murals in the area over the past week. The diverse lineup included notable names such as Huetek, Sipros, Sef, and Enzo. These artists brought their unique styles and perspectives, adding to the rich tapestry of urban art that defines the Bushwick Collective.

    A Day of Music and Community

    Hosted by Dstroy from Shade 45, the event was a musical extravaganza that drew hip-hop enthusiasts from all over. The highlight of the festival was Raekwon from Wu-Tang Clan, who delivered a 45-minute set featuring classic solo tracks and Wu-Tang favorites like “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing ta F’ Wit,” “Ice Cream,” “Can It Be All So Simple,” and the timeless anthem “C.R.E.A.M.” The crowd was electrified, rapping along to every word and celebrating the enduring legacy of one of hip-hop’s most influential groups.

    Before Raekwon took the stage, the renowned DJ and producer Statik Selektah energized the audience with a dynamic set. He was joined by a slew of guest performers, including Pitch Black, Rome Streetz, Termanology, and Nems, each bringing their unique flavor to the show. Earlier in the day, Fatman Scoop entertained the crowd with a DJ set of classic hip-hop hits, dancing and performing along to the beats. Tony Moxberg and Lil Dee also delivered memorable performances, adding to the day’s rich musical experience.

    The Bushwick Collective Block Party is more than just an art and music festival; it’s a celebration of community and culture. The event featured a variety of food trucks and local vendors, offering everything from delicious street food to unique handmade goods. This eclectic mix of art, music, food, and local craftsmanship highlights the vibrant spirit of Bushwick and the creativity that flows through its streets.

    As the sun set on another successful Block Party, attendees left with a sense of fulfillment and excitement for what next year’s event will bring. The Bushwick Collective, under Joe Ficalora’s passionate leadership, continues to be a beacon of artistic expression and community engagement. Each year, the Block Party not only showcases the best in street art and hip-hop but also reinforces the enduring power of art to bring people together, inspire change, and celebrate diversity.

  • In Focus Tom Rush w/Matt Nakoa at Caffè Lena

    Caffè Lena has been a continuously operating folk coffee house since 1960 and Tom Rush has been a continuously performing folk musician for just about as long. That certainly made Rush, who released his first album in 1962 and recorded for Prestige, Elektra, and Columbia records in the 60s and 70s, a perfect selection for Caffè Lena’s Folk Heritage Series which brought the New England troubadour to the stage for two shows on Friday, May 31.

    In the early bird set, which kicked off just after 5 pm to the delight of the mostly-baby boomer crowd, Rush performed a tight 70 minute set that showcased his wide-ranging skills as a songwriter, storyteller, bluesman, interpreter, and champion of other songwriters from his generation.

    After the packed house welcomed Rush to the stage, he joked that he was in the sixty-third year of his farewell tour and kicked into “Making the Best of a Bad Situation” a talking blues that featured a number of narrative follies and established the lighthearted and humorous nature that continued throughout the set.

    Upon completion of the first number, Matt Nakoa took the helm of the legendary Caffè Lena upright piano and accompanied Rush for most of the night. Nakoa, a songwriter who hails from Kerhonkson, NY, looks startlingly like the young, pre-mustachioed Tom Rush as captured in the photo that adorns the album cover of The Circle Game (1968). Nakoa also displayed a dexterous and adaptable approach to the keyboards all night, ranging in styles from barrelhouse to boogie-woogie to straight ahead rock n’ roll. “Hot Tonight” was an apt place in the set for Nakoa to join in since his playing certainly raised the temperature of the music on the stage for the duration of the concert.

    Nakoa is also the producer of Rush’s most recent album  “Gardens Old, Flowers New”, which was released in March of this year. “Won’t Be Back At All” was the first of three numbers that the duo played from this latest album. Rush joked that he learned a long time ago that he should play new songs early in a set in case he needed to redeem himself for any missteps, but despite his self-deprecation, the three new songs included in the set were among the most poignant of the night.

    True to his word, Rush followed a recently recorded track with a song nearly 60 years old: Joni Mitchell’s “The Circle Game”. Rush recounted that he first met Joni Mitchell in 1966 while he was doing a two week residency in Detroit at the famed The Chess Mate folk and blues club. He was two years overdue on an album for Elektra and asked the budding songstress if she had anything he could record. Shortly thereafter, Mitchell sent Rush a six song demo tape, humbly introducing “The Circle Game” as something she didn’t think was all that good. Rush’s reverential rendition reminded the audience of just how wrong Mitchell was – the lyrics remain spellbinding and perceptive. In many ways, Rush’s baritone, grown gravelly with age, continues to be the perfect foil for the lyrics, “we can’t return, we can only look / behind from where we came / and go round and round / in the circle game. Rush, who alternated between a standard-tuned acoustic, a 12-string, and his open-tuned, signature Martin guitar (replete with naked-lady-wrapped-up-in-a-snake inlay) mentioned that while David Crosby takes the credit, he’s pretty sure he was the one to first introduce Mitchell to open-tuning (something she became famous for). Rush said he’s pretty sure he was the one who showed Crosby how to do it too!

    Rush continued to school the audience in the ways of the old folk house with Sleepy John Estes’ “Drop Down Mama” which featured an exquisite barroom piano solo by Nakoa. Rush, who hails from New Hampshire, went to college at Harvard and got a second degree in the folk music of 1960s Cambridge clubs where he saw numerous blues and bluegrass legends, Estes included.

    Rush then turned the stage over to Nakoa for an interlude of piano instrumentals that shared one quality – they were scores for film. “Tumbleweed Tango” was a clever and playful piece that was commissioned to score a short animation about two balloon animal dogs (check out the video on YouTube if you get a chance). The impressionistic “8MM Home Movies” was inspired by Nakoa’s COVID lockdown with his father. Instead of family movie night, Nakoa’s dad fired up old 8MM home videos and Nakoa was inspired to rewrite an old composition from his high school days that conjured up the images of his youthful grandparents.

    Then Rush returned to the mic for “The Remember Song”, which was probably the highlight of the evening in terms of crowd response. Written by Steven Walters, the song captures exactly what it feels like to misplace the phone or walk into a room without knowing quite why you’re in there. Improbably, a 2007 upload of “The Remember Song” has 7.7M views on YouTube (a true viral sensation)– and Rush made it clear he’s never seen a dime from those clicks. Maybe, he mused, it was the same guy clicking it over and over and forgetting that he’d watched it in the first place.

    “Siena’s Song” was a tender ballad for his daughter. Rush wrote the track more than 20 years ago and revisited the lyrics at the behest of his 25-year-old daughter. His young daughter may also have influenced the addendum Rush added to the lyrics of “Ladies Love Outlaws” to bring the 70s hit for Waylon Jennings up to date in 2024: “Outlaws touch the ladies somewhere deep down in their soul, but never without proper consent,” sang the hip octogenarian.

    In the same way Rush paid tribute to Mitchell, his take on Jackson Browne’s classic “These Days” was a reminder of Rush’s role as champion of great songwriters. Browne wrote the song when he was only 16 and Rush was one of the first to record any songs written by the young prodigy. 

    “Lost My Drivin’ Wheel”, penned by Canadian David Wiffen, followed the Browne number and brought to mind Rush’s years as a Columbia recording artist in the 1970s at the height of the country- and folk-rock music. “Drivin’ Wheel” featured an extended soulful and percussive organ solo from Nakoa. The rock and roll spirit continued for a medley of the rock standards “Who Do You Love?” and “Hey! Bo Diddley”. Rush, a clever, twinkle-in-the-eye English major at heart, cracked up the audience by singing the lyrics “WHOM do you love?”.

    The encore for the early evening was the aptly titled “I Quit” which also closes out Rush’s new album. The tune could apply to quitting a job or relationship or a music career, but Tom Rush is in no hurry to leave the spotlight and shows no signs of slowing down. Heck, he had a second sold out show at 8 pm.

  • From Ashes to New’s Blackout Tour Part Two Rocks Waterstreet Music Hall

    On May 18, From Ashes to New electrified the stage at Waterstreet Music Hall with their Blackout Tour Part Two. They were joined by an exciting lineup of Ejiajh, Phix, Ekoh, and Point North, making it an unforgettable night for fans of rock, metal, and rap.

    The evening kicked off with Ejiajh, a dynamic rock/metal band hailing from Austin, TX. Their high-energy performance set the tone for the night, captivating the audience with their powerful riffs and commanding stage presence. Ejiajh’s set was a perfect blend of raw energy and technical prowess, leaving the crowd eagerly anticipating the acts to follow.

    Phix Keeps the Momentum

    Next up was Phix, a talented rapper and songwriter also from Texas. Phix brought a unique blend of lyrical depth and stage charisma, engaging the audience with his sharp rhymes and catchy hooks. A special highlight of Phix’s performance was the appearance of 11-year-old drumming prodigy Bronx Sandoval. Despite his young age, Bronx is no stranger to the stage, having completed four tours with the band. During a brief technical difficulty, Ekoh’s drummer joined Bronx for an impromptu jam session, showcasing their incredible synergy and adding a spontaneous thrill to the set.

    Following Phix was Ekoh, a rapper who has been rapidly gaining fame on social media platforms like TikTok and X. Ekoh’s performance was nothing short of electrifying, as he connected with the audience through his relatable lyrics and energetic delivery. His growing popularity was evident, with many fans in the crowd singing along to every word. Ekoh’s stage presence and interaction with the audience made for a highly engaging set.

    Point North’s Dynamic Performance

    The penultimate act of the night was Point North, a band based in Los Angeles, CA. Point North delivered a high-octane performance, blending elements of rock and punk with infectious energy. Their tight musicianship and engaging stage presence kept the momentum going strong, leaving the audience primed and ready for the headlining act.

    From Ashes to New’s Triumphant Return

    Finally, From Ashes to New took the stage, led by local favorite Danny, who previously fronted the band Vanity Strikes. The band’s performance was a triumphant homecoming for Danny, and the energy in the room was palpable. From Ashes to New delivered a powerful set, seamlessly

    blending their signature mix of rock, rap, and electronic elements. Danny’s connection to the local crowd added an extra layer of intensity to the performance, making it a night to remember.

    Overall, the Blackout Tour Part Two at Waterstreet Music Hall was a resounding success. Each act brought their unique flair to the stage, creating a diverse and exhilarating concert experience and leaving the fans buzzing with excitement.

  • O+ 365 Benefit highlights Care and Community 

    On Friday, May 24, 2024, O+ (pronounced O Positive) hosted a benefit event in support of their new O+ Exchange Clinic, which will offer year-round health and wellness services to O+ artists and alumni. The inaugural event, held at the Old Dutch Church in Kingston, featured eight-time Grammy nominee Allison Russell as the headliner.

    O+ defines itself as a national nonprofit working to help creatives of all stripes access health and wellness services, amplify the arts, and build more resilient communities in Kingston and beyond.

    Local musician Lara Hope of Lara Hope & The Ark Tones, an O+ member, emceed the evening’s event.  Midway through the night, Joe Concra, co-founder of O+, addressed the audience, highlighting some of their achievements and discussing the goal of providing 365 days of healthcare services. The theme of caring for artists and their community resonated throughout the night, from those on stage to the volunteers and attendees.

    Texas native Denitia, now based in Nashville, opened the night.  Her solo performance grew more intense as the set progressed, with the power and richness of her songs deepening. Having spent several years living in the Hudson Valley, her set conveyed a sense of homecoming and kinship.

    With bare feet and a smile a mile wide, Allison Russell took to the stage.  Backed by an internationally built four-piece band, Russell and her crew’s performance showed why they are currently on tour with Hozier.  But this night was about more than just music.  Allison shared the difficulties being faced by those seeking artistic and personal freedom, encouraging all to speak their minds, and to support those oppressed.

    Throughout her set, Russell dug deep into her soul, at times getting down on her knees with the songs consuming her. This was not just a show; this night was for a reason. Russell made sure all could feel what this was all about.

    Allison showcased her versatility throughout the performance, seamlessly transitioning from vocals to clarinet, to banjo, and back again over the course of an hour and a half. The audience eagerly absorbed each note, growing more enthusiastic as the night unfolded.  With Russell’s encouragement, everyone joined in singing ‘Demon’ from her latest album release, The Returner.

  • Master of Muppets: The Avett Brothers Come Alive in Albany

    They say blood is thicker, but when it comes to musical siblings, being related can often be the kiss of death. Historically speaking, the list of dysfunctional “brother bands” is long and distinguished. From acts like the Everlys, The Kinks, and Duane and Greg Allman, to modern rockers like Chris and Rich Robinson of The Black Crows and Noel and Liam Gallagher of Oasis, tales of in-fighting, lawsuits and bad break-ups are the stuff of legend. Hell, the last thing in the world I can imagine is writing songs with my older brother. Not because I don’t love the guy, but simply because I just wouldn’t feel comfortable sharing my most personal feelings with him that way. But this article isn’t about me, it’s about The Avett Brothers and the shared bond that makes them so special and unique.

    For Scott and Seth Avett, trust is a must and their unwavering belief in each other is largely what’s responsible for carrying the genre-bending folk rockers from Concord, North Carolina all the way to the top. If you’ve never heard them play before, imagine three Bob Dylan’s rolled into one, or a cross between Tom T. Hall and Faith No More, or John Prine meets Nirvana.  Hard-working and relatable, above all, the Avett’s are a family band with an uncanny ability to keep it real, no matter how tough times get.

    No strangers to the area, The Avett Brothers formed in 2001 and have been making regular stops around the Capital Region for over two decades now.  First playing for only a handful of people at a since-closed Italian restaurant in Albany, the Avett’s have also played memorable gigs at Troy’s Revolution Hall as far back as 2007, were regular fixtures during the early years of Mountain Jam Festival, and in recent times, have gone on to headline multi-night runs at Brewery Ommegang and Beak & Skiff Orchards. Their stop at MVP Arena on Thursday, May 23th, was the group’s first Albany date since performing at the Palace Theatre in 2012. Tapping red-hot Americana/roots artist Sierra Ferrell to open the show, fans old and new were all but guaranteed a magical evening of music. It’s just a shame more people didn’t get the memo in time.

    Kicking off the evening with a blistering, but brief set, West Virginia-born songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sierra Ferrell was stunning from the start. Seen as one of the brightest young luminaries in roots music today, Ferrell’s soulful voice was powerful and confident and instantly won the crowd over on songs like “In Dreams,” “Why’d Ya Do It” and “Jeremiah” from her 2021 debut album Long Time Coming.  Along with her dapper and distinguished backing band, Ferrell’s wide rang of styles on songs like “Money Train,”  “I Could Drive You Crazy,” and “Dollar Bill Bar” offered a taste of everything from country and ragtime, to foot-stomping folk to straight up rock n’ roll. 

    Pausing to ask the audience if anyone was looking forward to Del Fest as much as she was, the meager response was broken up by one man who screamed out “Del Yeah!” which elicited widespread laughter. After paying homage to a couple of her heroes by covering Arthur Smith Trio’s “Chittlin’ Cookin’ Time in Cheatham County” and “Years” by John Anderson, the remainder of the set featured material from Sierra’s excellent new album, Trail of Flowers including “American Dreaming,” and the arena-ready, Celtic-like stomper “Fox Hunt” to close out the truly unique set. Proving the hype is real on this one, Sierra Ferrell stood tall in Albany and made instant fans out of many of the first-time listeners.

    After a brief intermission that included songs from local underground folk heroes, the Felice Brothers, the stage was set and I knew I was exactly where I needed to be. It was finally time for The Avett Brothers to take us to church. The rare kind of band that have always been honest with the audience and true to themselves, I may not be a smart man, but even I know that’s hard to find these days. For me, their show at the MVP Arena on May 23th was personal and it hit me over the head like a ton of bricks. Timeless harmonies with lyrics that have helped shape my life in a way few other bands have, I think that’s a big part of the Avett’s secret recipe. An ability to put feelings into words in a way that the common man can understand and relate to. It’s a gift the Avett’s have been sharing with us since deciding to make music a career more than 20 years ago.

    Opening their performance with the beautifully sung vocal prelude of “Never Apart” that featured both Scott and Seth sharing the same microphone, it was the first of six songs that would be played from the band’s recently released self-titled album. Along with older brother Scott on banjo and Seth on acoustic guitar, the group also consists of longtime members Bob Crawford on standup and electric bass, Joe Kwon on electric cello, Tania Elizabeth on fiddle, Mike Marsh on drums and Bonnie Avett-Rini on piano.

    The genre-bending folk rockers would show off their experimental side next on the digitally enhanced “Satan Pulls the Strings” before landing on the lone song played from 2012’s The Carpenter, the foot stomping singalong, “Live and Die.”  From there the band would play a powerful rendition of their introspective hit, “Morning Song”, which received the biggest cheers of the night thus far.  Bouncing back with the upbeat lead single from the new album, “Love of a Girl” set the stage for an early highlight of the show, the sentimental fan favorite “Murder in the City.” A song that embodies what The Avett Brothers are all about – a brilliant combination of lyrics, melody and chord progression – its mantra about family and love was stunning and poignant.

    Pausing for a moment to let the song resonate, fiddle player Tania Elizabeth, battling through some minor feedback, had her turn in the spotlight with an extended solo on “Le reel du pendu / Les bars de la prison,” shredding the hairs of her bow to a rabid applause as the rest of the band rejoined the stage behind her. After working their way through another new one “Country Kid,”  the band would tug at the heart strings on “Living of Love”, our first song from The Avett’s breakthrough 2007 album, Emotionalism, before another well-penned Scott song, “Vanity,” forced the audience to take a critical look inside themselves. 

    Picking up the pace now, the momentum of the show took a major turn when The Avett’s launched into 2009’s high octane “Kick Drum Heart,” getting the entire crowd up on their feet and clapping in unison when suddenly, Seth Avett jumped off the stage with his wireless guitar, ran the length of the floor while high-fiving  fans and soloing all the way into the upper deck of section 123 of the MVP Arena before making his way back to the stage for the songs epic conclusion. Completely connected with the crowd, the band easily could have stopped the show here and no one would have complained, but luckily for everyone in attendance, the magic was only just beginning.

    Transporting listeners to a contemplative space on “Cheap Coffee,” a song that features heartwarming audio samples and feels radically different from most of their other work, the tone was set for another beloved staple and perhaps most well-known song, “I and Love and You.” With the crowd taking over and singing those same words back in unison, it was a moment that truly gave you goosebumps.  With the audience firmly in their grip, the placement of the sentimental love letter “I Wish I Was” flowed perfectly.

    Until this point in the night the band had let their songs do most of the talking, so when older brother Scott took to the microphone and starting speaking from the heart, you knew he had something significant to say.  Reflecting on the moment, he mentioned how he “looks out there and sees people that I connect to, how grateful [he] is and that those people are the reason they are here tonight.” Saying, “The opportunity to do that is amazing, it’s our life’s work, and we are so blessed to do it.” Reminiscing about what it was like getting reviews in the early days, Scott commented how “It was an interesting part of our journey, reading what people said about us. Eventually we had to stop reading until we could get to a point where we could do it without being crushed.

    We would get things written about us like, “The Avett Brothers show potential, but write small songs,” to which the Albany crowd loudly started booing. “We booed them too, but later we realized writing small songs is kind of an awesome thing.” Seth would playfully stop him there and say, “What is this old man with a banjo talking about?” before continuing with similar sentiments. “In any event, we were always very excited to be written about no matter what they said. I do recall we had hoped to be compared to our heroes. We didn’t get that so much, but we did get comparisons to The Muppets. Those were very good days, very exciting days. We thought it might be fun to give you a glimpse of what those early shows were like. Instead of talking about it, we’re gonna try and illustrate it and there’s only one group in the whole world that can help us do that and luckily, here in Albany they are here tonight! So without further ado, would you please help us welcome to the stage… The Avetts.” Erupting in a massive applause, the spotlights then revealed three Muppet-like alter egos of the band – Seth Monster, Scott Monster and Bob Monster – who would go on to ‘perform’ “Hard Worker” and “I Would Be Sad.” You can watch fan shot footage of that in the clip below.

    Smiles for miles all around, the real-life Avetts would get serious once again, performing a flawless version of the song “Shame.” A true emotional journey of “ups and downs,” the band would bounce back with an upbeat rocker from the new album, “Orion’s Belt” before going all the way back to 2006’s “Left on Laura, Left on Lisa.”  After a cathartic rendition of “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise,” the Muppet version of the band would return for a set closing singalong of the funky hit single “Ain’t No Man” resulting in a veritable party-like atmosphere on and off stage.

    After exiting the stage to a standing ovation, the band would take a little extra time soaking it in before returning. “Ya know it’s funny how in some rooms three thousand people can sound like twenty thousand, so thank you for that.”  Choosing to play the closer from the new self-titled album, “We Are Loved,” the vocal harmonies were about as beautiful as it gets.

    After paying homage to David Childers & The Modern Don Juans by covering “The Prettiest Thing,” the career-spanning show came to a proper close with Seth saying “Albany, thank you so much for letting us play for you. This is our last one and we are honored to do it with you,” as the band strummed the opening chords of perhaps the most emotional song in the Avett catalog, “No Hard Feelings.” Fading out with the repeating lyrics of “I have no enemies” sending chills up your spine, you knew you had just witnessed something special.

    With polished harmonies and heartfelt melodies, a charismatic stage presence and a wealth of wisdom contained within the lyrics, these songs feel timeless and should be heard by everyone. Rich with “repeat customer” appeal, the brothers Avett are veritable song-writing machines and put every ounce of energy and life experience they have into their craft. Even after a two-plus hour performance, there were still so many “favorites” left on the table in Albany. It’s no wonder people are so willing to travel from all over to see this band again and again.  

    With 3 Grammy nominations so far and over 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone, it’s easy to see the broad appeal and why the Avett Brothers continue to connect. From their first time in Albany playing at an Italian restaurant where people were more interested in pasta than what they were doing, to now playing the city’s biggest Arena two decades later, it’s fair to say this family band finally has Albany’s undivided attention now. At least they do mine. Salute.
