McKinley James Debuts With ‘Working Class Blues’

Rochester-born McKinley James released his debut album, Working Class Blues, on June 7. With classic sounds reminiscent of Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and Buddy Holly, the album takes us back to the first days of modern rock’n’roll.

Through stories of love and heartbreak, McKinley James celebrates the early days of soul and rock while simultaneously giving it a modern, personal twist.

Since 2015, James has been making a name for himself in the soul and blues scene. At the age of 13, he appeared on the cover of the platinum-selling Eric Church album Mr. Misunderstood. In the two years between the album’s release and James’ arrival in Nashville, he had gained enormous amounts of popularity and recognition. Nine years later, at only 22 years old, James has headlined gigs and events all across North America and Europe. Although this is only his debut, Working Class Blues paves the way for up-and-coming McKinley James‘ inevitable soul stardom.

Originally from Rochester, McKinley James has been making music with his father and fellow bandmate, Jason Smay, since he was a child. Inspired by nearly every genre, from country to R&B, James became a guitar prodigy as a child. The father-son duo shared an admirable passion for the vintage sounds, and were committed to recreating them themselves. The two were so dedicated to the genre, that the album was recorded with older instruments and technology. Jason played a vintage Ludwig drum set from 1970. McKinley played a vintage ’54 Stratocaster through a Peavey Pacer. Neither band member wore headphones, and microphones were minimal.

The “archaic” methods of recording were an essential part of the album’s production. Without it, replications of the old-fashioned sound would be artificial and inauthentic. There is a sense of originality to the production, especially when juxtaposed against the modern music scene and genres, that this kind of recording gives to the album.

When your band is only two people, there’s no hiding. It keeps you honest, and that was the goal with this album, tooâto be as honest as possible about who we are and what we do.

However, the method of production is not the only element of this album that gives it its key sound. James’ vocals, instrumentation, and singing style all emulate key figures of the era. With his gritty tone, calming guitar grooves, and swing-style approach, the album is not just a tribute to what rock was built on. In fact, Working Class Blues is an original, deeply personal piece that gives us a perspective as to how the genre has progressed. Its outreach to younger generations ignites a passion for music and storytelling previously unthought of.

Many of the tracks on Working Class Blues are stories of falling in love, heartbreak, and dealing with the aftermath. James’ melancholy about his own loneliness, captured in tracks like “Call Me Lonesome” and “Movin,” is something every listener can relate to. Yet, there is an undeniably personal tone to these tracks. James has shown, through each track, that this album is not just a collection of songs, but a story that he wants us to listen to. Despite his age, the voice James uses reminds us of tales as old as time.

River and Blues at Rockefeller Park Lineup for July 2024

The Battery Park City Authority announced the River and Blues lineup for this year’s Summer Concert Series held in Rockefeller Park, Manhattan.

For 25 years, the Battery Park City Authority’s River and Blues concert series has served as a fun, classic summer tradition. Fans of folk, soul, blues, and rock’n’roll alike gather in one of many of Manhattan’s parks and enjoy its free live performances. Since its inception, it has served as an opportunity to host a series of both legendary and recently emerging musicians.

This year, the concert series will be at Rockefeller Park, located in Battery City, Manhattan. To travel via public transit, use the 1, 2, or 3 train and exit at Chambers Street, or the E train, exiting at the World Trade Center. Following your stop is a 5-8 minute walk.

During the entire month of July, the River and Blues concert series features four free live performances every Thursday evening. The concert series hopes to bring together fans of multiple genres, including Tejano, rhythm and blues, country, folk, and soul music. This summer’s River and Blues lineup features an astounding collection of diverse, talented up-and-coming musicians.

Below is the information regarding the performances. All shows are free to the public and welcome all ages. Doors open at 6:00 PM and feature an opener from DJs Reganomics and Suzan D Anthony.

July 11 – Los Lobos

Multi-Grammy-winning artists Los Lobos‘ music embodies the idea of America as a melting pot, combining Tejano, son jarocho, and norteño with folk, country, and rock ‘n’ roll. Together, they create a sound that’s greater than the sum of its parts. For more than 50 years, this East L.A. band has been wowing audiences with daring and diverse recordings and legendary live shows.

July 18 – Hooray for the Riff Raff

Hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana, is the folk band Hurray for the Riff Raff. Combining elements of traditional American folk with elements of 90s punk-rock, Hurray for the Riff Raff offers a unique sound for listeners of all genres and generations. Join them on July 18 at 7:30 PM.

On July 25, Get soulful with singer Leela James for her live performance at Rockefeller Park. Live Events at Rochester’s Bug Jar this June

The Bug Jar, located in Rochester, will be hosting a series of events including parties, concerts, and happy hours throughout the month of June.

Having hosted iconic rock bands like The White Stripes, The Black Keys, and Modest Mouse, Bug Jar has made itself an important figure for musicians and music lovers alike. Since 1991, Bug Jar has given local and regional musicians an energetic, lively space to perform.

In the years since its reopening after the COVID-19 pandemic, the venue has become dominated by shows in the punk, metal, and hardcore scenes. With an eclectic interior design including two large bugs greeting customers at the door, the venue has been a safe space for creativity, boldness, and originality to shine.

This June, Bug Jar will be hosting a series of concerts and parties for fans of all genres. All events are 21+, with special tickets being sold for guests ages 18-20 for certain events.

6/9 – Jenny Don’t And The Spurs & Jazz Goons – 8pm

For the past 10 years, Country/Western band Jenny Don’t and the Spurs have been cultivating a vast international following through extensive tours across Europe, Australia, and New Zealand and performances in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Mexico. They will play alongside Jazz Goons on Sunday, June 9th.

6/14 – The Thrifts / The Macks / Mary Shelley – 8pm

A night of speaker-blasting rock and roll comes to the Bug Jar on Friday June 14th. Join the three rock bands: Rochester’s own The Thrifts, Portland-based The Macks, and Brooklyn-born Punk band Mary Shelley, who are rocking out in Rochester.

Sounds at Sunset Concert Series At Brooklyn Bridge Park Dates and Performers

This summer, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy hosts the Sounds at Sunset summer concert series at Pier 3 Plaza, located on Pier 3 at Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Standing along the banks of the East River, Pier 3 Plaza offers a wonderful view of the Manhattan skyline. The best method to travel by subway is to take the A or C train to High Street, followed by a 15-20 minute walk from the station.

The concert series hosts a variety of artists from all over the world. Solo artists, small ensembles, and even conductors and chamber groups will play at these concert series throughout the summer. Special events, including the Americana Music Festival and Paak Appreciation Night, are scheduled for the concert series as well.

Friday, June 21 at 6:00 PM – The Steely Dan Happy Hour

Kicking off the series is The Royal Scam with a Steely Dan Happy Hour at Pier 3 Plaza. Featuring NYCâs elite touring and recording musicians, The Royal Scam brings a night of fun and nostalgia to Pier 3 as an iconic tribute band. Before the show, there will be an opening DJ set by Maurice Bernstein, founder of Giant Step.

Friday, June 28 at 7:00 PM – Igmar Thomas & Musical Guests

Maestro, Trumpeter, conductor, composer, and arranger Igmar Thomas brings special musical guests, including a chamber ensemble, to Pier 6 at Brooklyn Bridge Park. In the past, Thomas has worked with hip-hop legends Lauryn Hill, Nas, and Busta Rhymes on lyrics and music composition. Join Thomas and guests for a night of big band-style jazz and jazz fusion on Friday, June 28.

Friday, July 12 at 7:00 PM – Yacouba Sissoko

World-renowned kora player Yacouba Sissoko and his band SIYA share West African songs and stories at Pier 6 Plaza. These stories have passed down from generation to generation. A night of tradition, culture, and folklore arrives in Brooklyn with Sissoko and SIYA on July 12.

Brooklyn Americana Music curates a taste of their award-winning festival at Pier 6 Plaza. Featuring internationally touring singer-songwriters with fiddles, banjos, and guitars, the festival celebrates its tenth anniversary. Their annual festival curates a blend of internationally recognized and up-and-coming music artists in the folk, country, and Americana music scene.

The final Sounds at Sunset event dedicates itself to one of music’s biggest names. For fans of the R&B icon Anderson .Paak, a night of deep cuts, unreleased tracks, and collaborations, awaits at Brooklyn Bridge Park. The event will be hosted by producer and drummer George “Spanky” McCurdy, accompanied by a band and DJ set.

Eastbound Throwdown Returns to Salem in September

Country band Eastbound Jesus are excited to announce the lineup for the 2024 rendition of their Eastbound Throwdown festival. The event features two days of nonstop concerts and camping behind the scenic views of Irwin Family Farm in Salem, NY.

Formed in 2011 in Greenwich, NY, Eastbound Jesus has been bringing country music to upstate New York for over a decade. In 2015, the band started toying around with the idea of throwing their own music festival, not only to showcase their music but other bands and friends, as well. The first rendition of Eastbound Throwdown was performed in a softball field just behind a local Elk’s lodge. However, the next year, the band reached out to the Irwin Family Farm, who unanimously agreed to host. The festival has been there ever since.

Since the event’s inception in 2016, thousands of fans have camped out in Salem to take part in the Eastbound Throwdown fun. Visitors are encouraged to camp out, as well as tailgate alongside food and drink vendors. Eastbound Throwdown is a family-friendly event and even includes a family camping area for children.

Eastbound Throwdown 2024 will be hosting a series of performers, most of whom are collaborators and friends of Eastbound Jesus. Join them on September 6th and 7th for two fun-filled nights of camping and country music!

Hipsy Gap Release Inspiring New Single “Nothing’s Good Enough”

On May 31, Brooklyn-based indie rock band Hipsy Gap released their new single, “Nothing’s Good Enough.” Emerging on the indie rock scene last fall, the newfound group stuns audiences with its odes to indie and alternative legends like Paramore, The Cranberries, and The Smiths.

A journey of self-discovery and identity can be one of the hardest that a person has to make in their life. Feelings of isolation, loneliness, and estrangement can creep up at any moment, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and nationwide lockdowns. With constant stimulation and ostracization, it can be difficult to find something that relates to life’s toughest battles. Yet, Hipsy Gap is able to do just that in their soothing, easygoing latest track.

“Nothing’s Good Enough” handles a complex, deeply personal issue that would still be relatable for listeners: the idea of home. Part of life is learning how to make your own home, even if it is in an unfamiliar environment. But what if there was never a model for a person while they were growing up? The idea of “home” has different definitions for different people, of course. But there is no denying how difficult it can be to form and maintain those ideas.

“Nothing’s Good Enough” captures a unique perspective; searching for a “home” in the eyes of a person who has never known one before. The easygoing and flowing melodies showcase their dream of a life with no bounds, a feeling of true freedom. The increase in tempo and volume of the bridge, when the characters realize home is within, is just gut-wrenching enough to hit home for listeners struggling to find their home.

With their latest single bringing a feeling of comfort, angst, and discovery all in one, Hipsy Gap encapsulates the meaning of home from within. Their fascinating combination of genres makes them an exciting up-and-coming band to keep your eye on.

Brookyln Bridge Park Events for Summer 2024

The DUMBO Improvement District, based in Brooklyn, announced the events that will be hosted this summer at the iconic Brooklyn Bridge Park in DUMBO.

Spanning just over a mile long, the park is home to activities for all ages. These include biking trails, skating rinks, basketball and handball courts, playgrounds, and fields. In addition to the array of activities, Brooklyn Bridge Park offers a scenic view of the Lower Manhattan skyline, admired by tourists and locals alike.

Other than its views and activities, the park is an important location for the DUMBO community. For decades, the space has served as the host of many neighborhood-wide events. These events include art shows, game nights, athletic events, and live concerts.

This summer, Brooklyn Bridge Park will be hosting a variety of events. Starting May 31st, the sixth annual DUMBO Drop marked the beginning of the season.

The Dumbo Drop is a neighborhood-wide block party signifying the beginning of the summer season in Brooklyn. According to tradition, thousands of Dumbo-shaped balloons and toys are tied to parachutes made by local artists and lifted into the air. Immediately after the viewing follows a block party. Activities are available for adults and children alike. Visitors can visit stands dedicated to hundreds of local restaurants and shops.

Live at the Archway – Weekly on Thursdays starting June 20th

Following the Dumbo Drop, the Live at the Archway event will begin on Thursday, June 20th. Live at the Archway is an annual series of free concerts and interactive visual arts programming located in the DUMBO Archway. Each year, the event seeks to promote local artists and musicians. Founded in 2015, the series reflects the neighborhood’s diversity and commitment to the arts. Here, you can find several arts showcases, including a broad variety of music, dance, and visual art styles.

Each event, which is held weekly on Thursdays, will feature a live concert followed by an art display. Live at the Archway begins on June 20 and will last until August 15th. Tickets are free and available to the public.

Fogo Azul is a New York City-based all-women, trans, and non-binary Brazilian Samba Reggae drum line. Launched in 2016 with Marcus Santos’ Grooversity education project, Fogo Azul is a diverse community that showcases drummers from all walks of life.

La Banda Chuska is re-imagining the vintage sounds of Peruvian cumbia and surf through the lens of their New York City home and diverse musical and cultural backgrounds. Taking inspiration from the twangy 1960s surf bands of Lima, as well as the psychedelic flavors of 1970s chicha, the band has been playing their musically expansive and dancey tunes. They have performed around New York City for the past three years, building up a loyal local following.

Brasil Summerfest is a list of festival events hosted around several venues throughout New York City. On July 11, they come to Live at the Archway for a showcase of traditional Brazilian funk, samba, and bossa nova.

La Sonora Nuyorkina / Art Wall by Joan LeMay

La Sonora Nuyorkina is a contemporary salsa band comprised of young, talented musicians who bring a fresh sound to the Latin genres. The band covers a variety of songs, from salsa classics to original compositions. Join them on July 28th at Live at the Archway.

Multi-instrumentalist Jerron Paxton revives the once-buried sounds of classical American music. Drawing inspiration from the 1920s, Paxton’s many talents allow him to revive old-fashioned blues, jazz, and country music in the twenty-first century.

Drawing inspiration from Afrofunk and indie dance genres, Brooklyn collective Gentleman Brawlers will stun the audience with an electrifying performance at Live at the Archway on August 1st.

Two-time GRAMMY nominee Tracy Bonham celebrates with a night of alternative and indie throwbacks at Live at the Archway on August 8th.

Queerchella / Art Wall by Melanie Hope Greenberg

Join Queerchella for their second year of festivities with a lineup of over 70 different LGBTQ+ artists from all over the country. The festival features live concerts, dance, and other visual arts performance showcasing the diversity of New York City’s music and arts scene.

Drink and Draw – Weekly on Wednesdays starting on June 19th

Presented by the DUMBO Improvement District with Creatively Wild Art Studio, Drink and Draw workshops provide the opportunity to work with some of DUMBO’s best artists. Although the event specifically caters to adults, there is no artistic requirement to join. All artistic levels are welcome at the workshop. Tables, easels, and art supplies are provided.

For the first workshop of the summer, DUMBO artist Craig Anthony Miller (CAM) will lead participants in a project incorporating the symbolism of the elephant. As a representation of strength, wisdom, and overcoming obstacles, the elephant serves as a model for the workshop to capture the essence of Brooklyn’s rich history. DJ Zemotion will provide a soundtrack for the night.

Don’t Miss Dopapod Summer Tour Stop at The Waterhole in Saranac Lake this Month

On June 21, fans can join Dopapod and Raisinhead at the Waterhole Music Lounge in Saranac Lake, NY, as they kick off their Summer 2024 tour.

Formed in 2008 at the Berklee College of Music, Dopapod contains four members: Eli Winderman (keys, vocals), Rob Compa (guitar, vocals), Chuck Jones (bass), and Neal âFroâ Evans (drums). Originally, the band was only made up of two members: Winderman and fellow Berklee student Michaelangelo Carubba, who played drums. The duo performed in several venues around Boston for a year, before adding Rob Compa on guitar. For the next two years, Dopapod performed as a trio. In 2010, Neal Evans became the official drummer after Carubba’s departure.

Since then, Dopapod has provided an otherworldly live experience to each of their shows. The group draws inspiration from multiple genres, including funk, rock, bluegrass, jazz, and electronica. This combination of these genres has provided Dopapod with the ability to fully engross their audience in their storytelling. Their last self-titled album, released in 2022, is no exception. Stories about traversing time travel, palindromic labyrinths, and a greater cohesive mystery bind the band’s discography into one psychedelic and entertaining experience.

In regards to the buzz for their latest tour, Winderman is on the record saying, âWeâre a live band. The songs are the vehicle for us to just express ourselves with the improv. Thatâs the main focus: to be in the present moment with each other, listening to each other, and creating on the spot. We love being on the tightrope and taking risks.”

Joining Dopapod on their tour is special guest Raisinhead. Since 2001, Raisinhead has committed to sticking to the roots of music through improvisation. The band consists of lead singer and guitarist Rob Beaulieu, Ted Grey (Guitar, Vocals), Brian Mangini (Keyboards), Tom Pirozzi (Bass, Vocals), and Jeff Prescott, Chadd Ploss, Scott Apicelli (drums). As a three-singer band, Raisinhead provides fans with an interactive evening of sound, energy, and pure fun.

Americade Block Party in Lake George This Weekend Free to the Public

The Americade Motorcycle Rally will be hosting a two-day block party at Blais Park on the âBring It! Bike Showâ stage in Lake George, from Friday, May 31 until Saturday, June 1. This event is free to the public and features live concerts from six different performers, three on each day, starting at 4:00 pm.

Since May 1983, Americade has served as one of the largest social events in the United States for all who engage in motorcycling. The rally features trade shows, races, both guided and unguided tours, and the most factory demos of any motorcycle exposition in the country.

Created by motorcyclist Bill Dutcher, Americade was originally affiliated with Aspencade, a motorcycle rally located in New Mexico, extending it to the East Coast and aptly naming the convention “Aspencade East.” By 1986, Aspencade East adopted the name “Americade” to signify its newly nationalized audience. That year, Americade became the largest touring motorcycle rally in the United States, with a crowd of 10,000. In 2024, Americade expects to host up to 50,000 people. Despite its massive size, Americade has provided an inclusive and family-friendly space to showcase the best of motorcycling.

In addition to the Block Party, Americade entertains its guests with rodeos, barbecues, and comedy and stunt shows featuring hundreds of local artists and performers. Americade also serves as an active fundraiser, donating to local and regional charities, raising up to $600,000 in previous years. Fundraisers for organizations like Ride For Kids, which is led by cyclists to raise money for pediatric cancer research and treatment, the Wounded Warrior Project, which raises money for veterans, and several more based in the Lake George area will be happening throughout the duration of the rally.

Mirable rolls into Americade featuring Steve Candlen on drums, Bobbie Vandetta on bass, and Tim Fiato on keys.

Cayuga Chamber Orchestra Announces New Music Director

On May 19, the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, located in Ithaca, announced its next Music Director: Guillaume Pirard.

The news of Pirard’s selection was revealed at the CCO’s Passing the Baton concert. Pirard will begin his endeavor as Music Director by conducting the first concert of the 2024-2025 season.

Guillaume Pirard was born in Belgium and studied at the Brussels Conservatory of Music and Den Haag. While attending, he studied classical, Baroque, and romantic styles. He continued his studies at Julliard and the New School, where he earned his master’s in Orchestral Conducting. During his studies, he played in various period ensembles and chamber music series in Europe and the United States. These include the Helicon Foundation, the Smithsonian Chamber Players, the Chamber Music Society of Central Virginia, the Staunton Festival, Les Muffatti and the Context series at Rice University.

As the co-concertmaster and founding member of The Knights, Pirard has performed on tours all over North America and Europe. These performances include festivals in Tanglewood, Ravinia, Caramoor, the Festival-de-Paques in Aix-en-Provence, the Salzburg Festpiele, the Tonhalle in Zurich, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, and the Muziverein in Vienna.

In addition to his European tours, Pirard has conducted all over the United States. These include The New York University and Cornell University Orchestras, the Orlando Philharmonic, and the Mannes Orchestra and School of Opera at the New School. Aside from conducting, Pirard has served on multiple university faculties across the United States. While working for the New York University ensembles, he also served on the violin and chamber music faculty. He has presented guest master classes at Cornell University and the University of California at Santa Barbara. Furthermore, he has served as a panelist for several arts organizations. This includes the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, the New York Youth Symphony, and the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.

Formed in 1976, the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra is designated as “Ithaca’s orchestra.” Over the years, they have performed hundreds of concerts through a variety of programs. During the season, these performances include the Orchestral Series, Chamber Music Series, holiday concerts, and free Family Concerts. However, most notable is the Willard Daetsch Youth Outreach Program, which provides school students around Tompkins County with instruments and instructors.
