  • Troy Hosts Rockin’ on the River and Powers Park Concert Series

    This July, the city of Troy hosts two separate concert series and a special live event at Powers and Riverfront Park.

    “Rockin’ on the River,” which began on June 26, will last through to August 7, with concerts every other week on Wednesday.

    The Powers Park series begins on July 13 and will last until August 24, with concerts happening weekly on Saturdays. The Uncle Sam Jam at Powers Park will be a special live event at Powers Park on July 27.

    Similarly, each concert series features a wide range of local and regional musicians and fun free for the whole family.

    Presented by the Downtown Troy Business Improvement District, “Rockin’ on the River” is a free concert series hosted at Riverfront Park in downtown Troy. Rockin’ on the River includes four nights of rock ‘n ‘ roll, roots, and blues music alongside local food and drink vendors. The concerts are held weekly on Wednesdays at 5:30 pm, featuring two artists each night, with the exception of the performance scheduled for July 10. Fans can enjoy the display of food, drinks, and music for free, with no tickets necessary.

Due to severe weather and thunderstorms, the Rockin’ on the River concert on July 10 has been postponed for one week. Fans can still catch Hot Cousin, the Chris Busone Band, and The Albany Rock Pit Showcase Band on July 17 at 5:30 pm.

    Sponsored by local businesses, the Powers Park series has served the concertgoers and the community for over twenty years. Since 2004, crowds have returned every Saturday evening to see the best in local entertainment on the Neil Kelleher Stage. Over the last two decades, the Powers Park series has become one of the city’s most anticipated events, bringing free music, food, and entertainment to the citizens of Troy. The park is located at 110th Street and Second Avenue in North Troy. Moreover, the full lineup of the series is below. Concerts are every Saturday, starting July 13 until August 24.

    Finally, the Uncle Sam Jam is a one-time event at Powers Park. In collaboration with the Combat Vets Association, the Uncle Sam Jam is a celebration of veterans and those who have served in combat. The concert is chock full of free food and music from local vendors. Join the Joe Mele Project and the Pat Travers Band for a night of rock and roll, free for the entire family.

  • WYLDLIFE Rocks Out With New Single ‘Fast Dreams’

    On June 21, NYC-based punk rock band WYLDLIFE released their newest single, “Fast Dreams.” The new single is the band’s first release since their 2020 album, “Year of the Snake.” Complete with fast-paced guitar riffs, a moving bassline, and exciting, gritty vocals, “Fast Dreams,” WYLDLIFE makes headbanging-worthy rock and roll music fun again.

    For over the last decade, WYLDLIFE has brought the 70s rock and roll style back to New York City’s music scene. Their fun-filled single and music video are the latest thing to come out of their label, Wicked Cool Records. WYLDLIFE has four members: Dave Feldman (vocals), Sam Allen (guitar), Spencer Alexander (bass), and Russ Barrnett (drums), each committed to bringing back the classic sounds of the 70s like Blondie and Ramones. Since 2009, WYLDLIFE has released 4 full studio albums and were nominated for an Independent Music Award for Best Rock/Hard Rock Song.

    Their newest single, however, is a captivating mix of sounds from different eras. The 70s inspiration is absolutely prevalent, but upon first listen, it feels like a 2000s power anthem. The fast-moving bassline, combined with Feldman’s vocals, is reminiscent of alt-rock outfits like Palaye Royale, Arcade Fire, and The White Stripes. Amidst the current ever-popular trap and indie-pop scene, WYLDLIFE’s newest single is a fantastic juxtaposition that has all the right elements of nostalgia, yet still manages to sound fresh, original, and new.

    The lyrics of “Fast Dreams” tell an incredibly relatable story about someone excited for their dreams to come true while having to wrestle with the mundane parts of life. “Fast Dreams” brings us a familiar narrative about someone trying to make their dreams come true as fast as possible because they are simply too excited for success. “Fast Dreams” feels like a song that would belong on the soundtrack of a coming-of-age movie, with the narrator’s contradictory feelings of angst and excitement.

    Along with their newest single, the music video for “Fast Dreams” is also out for consumption. Animated in the style of a 2-bit arcade game, the music video features WYLDLIFE as video game characters, racing against reality and time to achieve their goal. The message of the single is executed perfectly, and it is obvious that the group had a blast when creating the video together. “Fast Dreams” was the best thing to come out of their four-year-long hiatus.

  • Five For Fighting Nationwide Tour To Begin – 9 Shows Across NY

    Five For Fighting kicked off Independence Day with a performance on Live With Kelly and Mark at “Live’s 4th of July Family Party” in New York City. In addition the Grammy-nominated soft-rock star has announced an upcoming 4-month nationwide tour beginning in July until October. Moreover the tour will be split into two separate legs; a full-band Tour and a string quartet leg of the tour.

    FFF — also known as John Ondrasik — will be joined by experienced banmadates; drummer Randy Cooke, bassist Sean Hurley, and guitarist Peter Thorn for the first 2 months of the tour. Comparatively he will be joined by the likes of violinist Melissa Tong –who toured with Post Malone in 2023, Tony-winner Katie Kresek on violin, Broadway’s own Chris Cardona on viola and cello player Peter Sachon for the tours finals two-months. Markedly FFF’s eclectic style has brought out a wide-arrange of highly decorated performers.

  • Luzerne Music Center Announces Summer Concerts

    The Luzerne Music Center has announced its summer concerts before the beginning of the 2024-2025 season. Hosted in the town of Lake Luzerne, the concerts showcase the talent of regional and local musicians. Moreover attendees can enjoy dozens of performances of classical music from local groups to national touring ensembles. Notably, a wide variety of shows will be hosted this summer throughout the town, including a Chamber Music Festival, student concerts, and the Faculty Artist Series.

    Kicking off the summer is the Luzerne Chamber Music Festival. The festival includes performances from musicians all over the Northeast, including New York City, Philadelphia, and more. Musicians of the NYC Ballet Orchestra kick off the festival on Monday, July 8, presenting a quintet and sextet playing pieces of Mozart and Brahms. Following the NYC Ballet’s performance is the American String Quartet on Monday, July 29, playing pieces from composers like Beethoven, Caroline Shaw, Vivian Fung, and Maurice Ravel. Lastly, the musicians of The Dalí Quartet and The Philadelphia Orchestra, with CEO and Artistic Director Elizabeth Pitcairn, close out the festival on August 5 and 12, respectively.

    Following the Chamber Music Festival is a series of Faculty Concerts, performed by faculty members of the Luzerne Music Center. Each concert incorporates music from all periods, including LMC’s composers-in-residence, James Chu and Connor Elias Way. The weekly Faculty Concerts are every Friday, beginning on June 28 and ending on August 9.

    Along with festivals, the Luzerne Music Center hosts free concerts featuring their own students. Starting on June 29, students of the Luzerne Music Center will alternate between solo and chamber showcases, displaying what they have learned over the course of the year. The LMC Symphony Orchestra joins them starting June 30, including a piano prelude for specific events. All student and LMC Symphony Orchestra concerts are free and welcome all ages.

  • Fretless Guitar God Ned Evett Rocks Buffalo, Syracuse, and Rochester This August

    Ned Evett, a pioneer in the world of fretless guitarists, makes his return to upstate New York for the first time in over two decades this August.

    Evett kicks off a string of live performances with a live concert at the Westcott Theater in Syracuse, on August 6. Immediately following, is his show at The Lounge at Revolution Gallery on August 7. Evett finishes off his New York stops with a live show at the Spirit Room in Rochester.

    Over the last two decades, Ned Evett has cemented himself as an influential figure in the world of guitar players. In the early 1990s, Evett smashed his guitar after playing a show and handcrafted his own fretless guitar. Since then, Evett has mastered the style of fretless playing, which requires an immense understanding of the instrument’s sound and impeccable perfect pitch.

    During his career, Evett has performed in over 30 countries with hundreds of touring artists, including Joe Satriani, Leon Russell, Kansas, Eric Johnson, George Thorogood, and John Scofield. Despite his extensive touring history, he has not made a return to upstate New York in over two decades. His name might be familiar to longtime guitar fans in the region, though. In 2003, Evett won the North American Rock Guitar Competition at the University of Buffalo. Since then, Evett has received massive critical acclaim. Described by Guitar Player magazine as “the world’s first fretless guitar rockstar” and dubbed “the king of the glass-necked guitar” by USA Today, Evett is the inventor of the glass-necked fretless guitar and the glass slide capo.

    Evett will perform in a trio, with Rochester-based Steve Imburgia on drums and percussion and Brian Barr on bass for the New York shows. He will perform songs from his forthcoming record, Strange Kind of Freedom, which is set to release on November 8, as well as several fan favorites from his 12 prior solo releases.

  • Kaatsbaan Cultural Park Announces 2024 Annual Festival

    This fall, Kaatsbaan Cultural Park hosts the 2024 rendition of their annual cultural festival. The festival, held in Tivoli, NY, begins on the weekend of September 13 and ends on October 6.

    For the three weekend of the festival’s duration, an array of visual and musical artists will showcase their work, with each weekend focusing on a different medium. Attendees can enjoy a wide variety of activities and shows, including film screenings, concerts, art exhibits, dance shows, and more.

    Founded in 1990, Kaatsbaan Cultural Park promotes all forms of art and culture found throughout the world.  The organization hosts a wide variety of events, including the Annual Festival, art and dance exhibitions, and even educational programs such as the Ballet Intensive. With a diverse set of performers, Kaatsbaan Cultural Park brings culture and art to the town of Tivoli. As both an incubator for creativity and presenter for world-class artists in dance, theater, music, film, poetry, and culinary and visual arts, Kaatsbaan provides artists with state-of-the-art dance studios, accommodations, an indoor theater, and outdoor stages.

    The three weeks of the Annual Festival involves dozens of performers, each specializing in their own form of art. Due to the festival’s length, the events are dedicated to a specific medium.

    September 13–15 focuses on film, literary, and visual art. The events include an author reading and conversation with Francine Prose, an art walk with curator Hilary Greene and artists, and a screening of MERCE / MISHA / MORE, a film celebrating decades of friendship and collaboration between Mikhail Baryshnikov and Merce Cunningham.

    September 19–2, Gaia Music Collective and Contemporaneous

    The festival celebrates music with a free Community Sing hosted by Gaia Music Collective and a performance of History of Life—Act 1, an in-development production by Contemporaneous, a Kaatsbaan-grown ensemble, inspired by Homer’s Odyssey.

    September 28–29, Limón Dance Company, Boca Tuya, and Music From The Sole

    A preview performance of a new creation by Bessie Awardee Kayla Farrish that examines two thematically aligned works by José Limón, Redes (1951) and El Grito (1952).

    Boca Tuya performs Like Those Playground Kids at Midnight, a shapeshifting duet developed at Kaatsbaan in 2023. Boca Tuya is led by queer Puertorriqueño choreographer and director Omar Román De Jesús.

    Music From The Sole closes out the night with a new work-in-development that explores the profound link between tap dance, Afro-Brazilian, and house music.

    October 5–6

    The weekend begins with the Kaatsbaan debut of multi-award-winning British choreographer and director Sir Wayne McGregor and his work Autobiography (v100 and v101) on the outdoor Mountain Stage.

  • Rensselaer Announces City and Summer Jam Concert Series

    The city of Rensselaer, NY, has two separate concert series on tap this summer.

    The first, the Rensselaer City Concert Series, began on June 17 and will last until July 29 at Riverfront Park. The second, the Summer Jam Concert Series, began on June 26 and will last until August 7 at the North End Firehouse on Washington Avenue. Each concert for both series is weekly from 6 pm to 8 pm. The full lineups for both events are listed below.

    While the city hosts two separate series at the same time, each serves a different purpose and centers on different artists and organizations. The Rensselaer City Concert Series is a government-affiliated program hosted by the City of Rensselaer. All events for the Rennselaer City Concert Series are free and available for all ages.

    A wide variety of performers make the lineup of the City Concert Series, encompassing all genres for all listeners. Performances range from rock outfits like Gone Grey and Pete & Friends to Donny Elvis, a nationally known Elvis impersonator making an appearance at both series, to intimate smooth jazz from Standard Edition.

    However, the Summer Jam Concert series is hosted by Kiwanis, a charity that provides after-school programs to children and schools across the country. Summer Jam Concert Series promotes rock artists of all subgenres: classic rock, hard rock, pop rock, contemporary, and even a night of Celtic folk music. Each week, the artists performing at Summer Jam bring the audience back to the roots of rock and roll. Celebrate the summer with a throwback to the classic rock songs everyone knows and loves. The series is a free event enjoyed by the whole family.

  • Basilica Soundscape Returns to Hudson This September

    This September, the town of Hudson, NY, will host the 2024 Basilica Soundscape Music Festival. From September 27-29, fans and attendees can see a wide variety of concerts, art installations, and high-tech performances from local and nationwide artists.

    Founded in 2010 by Melissa Auf der Maur, Patrick Doyle, and Tony Stone, Basilica Hudson has been providing local artists, writers, and musicians alike with a historic space to showcase their work. Located in a reclaimed industrial factory from the 1880s, the original architecture included industrial windows, brick walls, terracotta ceiling tiles, and an intricate steel truss system. With thorough renovations, but still preserving the original features, it became the perfect scenic location to present these works. Since then, a wide variety of programs hosted through Basilica Soundscape include music festivals, live readings, and gallery presentations.

    Through its programs, Basilica Hudson actively encourages and supports the creation, production, and presentation of independent arts and culture. One of its trademark festivals, Basilica SoundScape, features live concerts, conceptual sound performances, author readings, art installations, curated local vendors and artisans, on-site activities, and more, creating an immersive, innovative weekend of art, music, and culture.

    “Motherbeat” vinyl DJs Eris Drew & Octo Octa return to Basilica Soundscape for a night of bass-blasting house music. They’re bringing their powerful, custom LUV NRG sound system to the cavernous Main Hall for an all-night party, presented by the Bunker.

        Noise legends Lightning Bolt bring their exciting sound from Providence, Rhode Island, to Hudson for a night of energetic rock and roll.

          Post-rock band Still House Plants make their Basilica Soundscape debut. Join them on Saturday to hear some creative, innovative sounds.

            An exciting combination of genres awaits as new rap combines forces with a nü-metal edge with the heavy style and flow of hardcore rapper E L U C I D.

              Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter Greg Mendez shares songs from his newest self-titled album on Saturday night.

              Maria BC presents dark, ambient movements that accompany melancholy, soaring vocals with a haunting new song featured on the soundtrack for the new film “I Saw the TV Glow.”

              Cassandra Jenkins, the unofficial songwriter laureate of Central Park Birders, will present songs from her upcoming album, My Light, My Destroyer, set to release on July 12.

              Local band Babehoven brings the indie-rock sound to Basilica Soundscape. They will be presenting songs from their latest album, Water’s In You, released in April of this year.

                  Open Head, one of the most exciting bands local to Kingston, NY, brings a night of post-punk fun to Basilica Soundscape.

                  Basilica Hudson’s signature Writers in the Rafters program makes a return to Basilica Soundscape, featuring live readings from local writers and poets alike.

                    • BAM Announces New Artistic Director and Fall Season Events

                      The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) has announced the program for the Fall 2024 season, along with their new musical director, Amy Cassello. Since 2013, Cassello has filled several roles for BAM, including programming, artistic director, and producer. During her decade-long run, Cassello produced and oversaw numerous concerts, plays, festivals, and series at BAM.

                      This fall, BAM will host a multidisciplinary variety of programs, including plays, poetry readings, multimedia demonstrations, dance shows, holiday concert series, and a new set of in-house resident musicians. Among the events is this year’s rendition of Next Wave, an arts showcase contextualizing the artistic visions projected for the near future. Also featured this year is the return of BAMboo!, The Best of BAMkids Film Festival, and a film program featuring repertory screenings alongside new releases.

                      Each year, the Next Wave 2024 & Emerging Visions events represent dynamic elements integral to BAM’s path into the future. With a renewed focus on works-in-process, increased presentations from the Global South, and greater investment in presenting partnerships, Next Wave and Emerging Visions support musicians and artists from all over the country. These events provide artists with the space and resources necessary to showcase their hard work and serve as a reminder to all that BAM will always welcome creative visionaries, no matter where they are from or where they trained.

                      This is an exciting moment for BAM as we bridge our past with our future. Amy is a deep thinker who considers the needs of artists and arts workers at every turn. As a longstanding BAM programmer and creative producer, she intimately understands our role in the arts ecosystem.                       This year’s Next Wave presents well-known creators who bring their groundbreaking theater, music, poetry, multi-media, and dance to the BAM stage. Works being presented at Next Wave include Bill T.                       Among the new works being presented at BAM, the theatre has also announced its resident artists for the 2024 season. This year’s BAM residents include Baba Oludaré, Hope Boykin, Mayfield Brooks, Delano Burrowes, Kayla Hamilton, Soomi Kim, and Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre.

                    • Crandell Theatre to Screen Iconic Hollywood Films

                      Beginning Friday, July 5, the Crandell Theatre in Chatham, NY, will screen iconic Hollywood movies throughout the summer months. Ranging from science fiction to classic comedies, the Crandell Theatre offers a series of fantastic, nostalgic films for the entire family.

                      Built in 1926 by Walter S. Crandell, the theater was an architectural marvel in the town of Chatham. The Spanish Renaissance style created an “atmospheric theater” for the auditorium, providing a comforting space for the over 500 seats. Anthony Quirino purchased the theatre in 1960. For 50 years, it was owned and operated by the Quirino family, until Anthony’s son, Tony, died in 2010.

                      Following Quirino’s death, the Crandell was closed and faced an uncertain future. With an outpouring of community support and the leadership of the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation, Lael Locke, and Judy Grunberg, the Chatham Film Club (CFC) raised approximately $600,000 to buy the theater and make repairs.

                      Despite its small size, The Crandell Theatre is an incredible historic venue that makes a big impact. The theater is one of fewer than one hundred single-screen theaters in the United States and one of the few non-profit theaters nationwide. In 1998, the CFC began hosting independent film nights, promoting the works of local and regional filmmakers.

                      In 2000, the CFC hosted the first ever FilmColumbia festival, originally for one weekend during the year. Two decades later, FilmColumbia expanded to a 10-day-long affair. Since 2010, Crandell Theatre Inc. has raised over $1 million for renovations and continues to enhance the moviegoing experience for generations to come.

                      First up on the list of Hollywood classics is Stephen Spielberg’s iconic film Jaws. The series will also include such fan favorites as Saturday Night Fever, The Big Lebowski, Dirty Dancing, Pulp Fiction, Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope (the 1977 original), The Godfather, Jurassic Park, and Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. Minions will screen at 10 am on July 13 for free during the annual Chatham Summerfest.
