    jess novak the joke

With a sharp electric fiddle, impactful vocals, and an enrapturing sound, Jess Novak is a musical force to be reckoned with. Having performed on stages from California to the likes of New York City’s own The Cutting Room in solo, duo, or band formation, Novak has played over 150 shows each year and has an impressive count of twelve original album releases under her belt- and a published book to boot.

In addition to her own musical endeavors, Novak is the founder and presenter of the F.I.R.E. Festival, an acronym for females inspire, rock, empower. Hosted for the first time in 2022, the annual F.I.R.E. festival continues to highlight and empower female artists, musicians, and business owners across the industry.

Returning for her 13th release since debuting as an artist in 2013, Jess has announced the WOMAN EP slated for release this December. A call to action for women as well as a celebration of those who take a stand in the face of seemingly daunting odds, WOMAN will feature two original songs in addition to a surprise cover of a Taylor Swift track.

Made in partnership with the producer and engineer behind her last EP Sonrise, Justin Spaulding, WOMAN is a promising fan to the already burning flame that is female empowerment.

“I felt like I needed to capture the spirit of the [F.I.R.E. Festival] in a song, specifically combining the words ‘fire’ and ‘woman.’ I did in this song, but didn’t expect the timing to be so meaningful. I want to give faith and inspiration to women who are standing up for themselves and others all the time.”

      – Jess Novak

Jess Novak has also teased a music video publication coinciding with the release of WOMAN. While no further information is available on this exciting development, you can keep up to date on all of the latest updates on WOMAN and beyond on Jess’ official website here.

Established in 1974 in collaboration between New York State Parks and the Artpark & Company nonprofit, Artpark has presented the folks of Western New York with astounding performing arts programs each summer for the past fifty years.

With over 150 acres to their name, Artpark hosts a myriad of creative endeavors including but not limited to those of visual artists, dance and cirque arts performers, cutting-edge theater casts, local, national, and international musicians across all genres, poets, writers, and more.

Artpark weaves their creative environment with that of the Niagara River and Gorge through forested trails, sculpture gardens, and outdoor recreation areas that encourage visitors to not only appreciate the creative minds around them but the earth that enables such endeavors and its significance within Western New York’s Indigenous population.

Now in its 50th year, Artpark has announced the appointment of their newest president, Dave Wedekindt. A lifelong Western New Yorker and Amherst local, Wedekindt has worked with Artpark & Company for six years already, first as Director of Marketing & Sales and then as Vice President of Concerts & Marketing, eventually being promoted to Vice President in 2022 before stepping up as the Interim President in April of this year, just prior to the non-profits anniversary.

Wedekindt’s career as an arts management professional spans nearly 30 years. With extensive experience in strategic planning, leadership, programming, marketing, development, finance, and event operations for other large not-for-profit organizations, his new position is promising.

Beyond and prior to his work with Artpark & Company, Dave is a graduate of SUNY Fredonia with a BS in Business Management and subsequently an alumnus of internship programs at Rockefeller Arts Center, Chautauqua Institution, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Rockwell Hall, and Shea’s Performing Arts Center where he took on his first full-time role as Associate Director of Development in 1995.

    • Independent Venue Bronx Music Hall Celebrates Grand Opening

The Bronx’s newest independent live music venue and community center, Bronx Music Hall, recently celebrated its grand opening as the first venue of its kind in the Bronx in over 50 years.

      Bronx music hall

Located at 438 East 163rd Street in Melrose is the Bronx Music Hall, a newly constructed $15.4 million facility that celebrates the history and future of the Bronx’s vibrant music scene.

The space boasts a total of 14,000 square feet for its music hall and community cultural center made in development with the nonprofit Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation, or WHEDco for short. Bronx Music Hall aims to not only provide a space for local musicians to perform but to also allow creatives of all kinds to gather, create, and celebrate their works.

Constructed as a part of WHEDco’s Bronx Commons mixed-use development, the Bronx Music Hall features a 250-person capacity performance theater, a grand lobby and exhibition hall, a multipurpose room and dance studio, a green room, a recording studio and post-production room, and two adjacent plazas with amphitheater-style seating for outdoor performances.

Designed to serve an estimated 20,000 visitors annually, the center will offer live music, dance, and spoken word performances, classes in music and dance, theater workshops and productions, a youth orchestra, film screenings, art exhibitions, community showcases, and more.

“The opening of the Bronx Music Hall marks a new chapter in the cultural and economic renaissance of the South Bronx. This project embodies our commitment to supporting vibrant, inclusive communities through strategic investments in the arts and creative industries. This new venue will not only celebrate the borough’s incredible musical legacy but also serve as a catalyst for job creation, tourism, and long-term economic growth.”

      – Hope Knight, Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner

Beyond displaying the skills of the Bronx, the BMH plans to foster the next generation of creatives within the borough through educational and cultural partnerships to inspire community engagement and the pursuing of careers in the arts.

In addition to the facility’s new endeavors, it now provides WHEDco’s Bronx Music Heritage Center a bigger and better space to call home. Founded in 2010, the BMHC preserves and promotes the rich musical history of the Bronx while cultivating and reviving the borough’s music scene today.

“Over decades the Bronx produced more popular music than any place in our country for the simple reason that different cultural traditions lived alongside one another… The Bronx Music Hall will spotlight the sounds of new Americans from around the globe, as well as Bronx born artists like Prince Royce, Romeo Santos, Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, French Montana, and Samara Joy.”

      – Nancy Biberman, Founder of WHEDco and President Emerita

BMHC highlights the evolution of the Bronx as a people and how periods of successive migration introduced distinctive sounds to one another, evolving into entirely new genres such as hip-hop, which saw its inception in the 1970s within the borough’s communities.

With their new space and resources at hand, the BMHC will continue the Bronx’s history of creative innovation with free cultural programs and free or low-cost music and dance classes for folks of all ages.

This giant step forwards in the Bronx creative community was made possible by a series of grants awarded to the WHEDco from the New York City Regional Economic Development Council, I LOVE NY’s Market New York program, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

To learn more about what the Bronx Music Hall has to offer, how to visit, and events to attend, be sure to check out their official website here.

    • Amayo Releases Vibrant Single “Black Magic Sister” Ahead Of Debut Solo Album

Former frontman of Antibalas and Afrobeat pioneer Amayo has released “Black Magic Sister” ahead of his debut solo album, Lion Awakes.

      Photo: Kory Thibeault

Known best as the former frontman of Antibalas, it’s nearly an understatement to describe Amayo as a legend in the Afrobeat scene. Often credited with the globalization of Afrobeat and contributing to the sound becoming a genre of itself, Amayo moved to New York City in 1995 from Nigeria.

Having attended Howard University, Amayo eventually moved to Brooklyn and found his niche in designing clothing and teaching Kung Fu out of his Afrospot Temple.

While there, Amayo was approached by two of his future bandmates with an invitation to join their new band named Antibalas- and the rest is history. Over the course of 23 years, Amayo became the face of the band while lending his voice and songwriting skills to the group.

Parting ways with Antibalas to pursue his solo career, Amayo has returned to the public eye with the announcement of his debut album Lion Awakes and the release of its first track, “Black Magic Sister”.

Dedicated to his rich Nigerian heritage and Chinese martial arts teachings, Lion Awakens is a testament to Amayo’s boundless creative vision and deep love for his craft. Opening the five track album with “Black Magic Sister,” he makes a vibrant first impression.

Just under six and a half minutes in length, “Black Magic Sister” is a rich soundscape of percussion, keyboard, horns, and vocals- both Amayo’s own and a chorus of supporting voices.

“[Black Magic Sister is] about offering Blessings for an abundant mindset. It’s also a prayer for twins and a wish for those who lost close ones.”

      – Amayo

Amayo’s debut solo album Lion Awakes is slated for release on January 17, a set of fierce afrobeat tracks that promises listeners a sonic adventure through myth and reality. In anticipation for the release an official album release party to be held at the Brooklyn Bowl on January 29.

    • The FMs Release Elevated Commemorative Album 51122

New York City based synth-rock band The FMs have released their junior album 51122, a commemorative project for their late member Frankie Rex.

      Photo: Dylan Mars Greenberg

Originally a musical partnership between high school friends Matte Namer and Frankie Rex, The FMs have curated a tight-knit community over the years with their synth-infused sound, unapologetically queer narratives, and underground shows held atop a ferry boat in the industrial canals of Bushwick.

Not only did the ferry shows introduce many to the sound of The FMs, the boat provided the duo a space to record and self-produce three full-length LPs. Debuting in 2017 with Machinacene Epoch, The FMs quickly established their ethos of a rather traditional album creation process in which each release exists with its own personality and sonic statement.

      The FMs 51122

PINK + BLACK, the duo’s sophomore double-LP began taking shape quickly after Machinacene Epoch’s release in 2017 and saw promising progress into 2020, amassing 2,000 hours of recording, producing, and tinkering. However, PINK + BLACK was delayed after the news of a devastating loss. Frankie Rex passed away from an overdose in 2022, understandably putting the project on pause as the loss was processed.

This was not the end for The FMs, however. Matte Namer was determined to continue Rex’s legacy and prove that not even death could stop Frankie’s voice from being heard- a sentiment that came to fruition with the posthumous release of PINK + BLACK in 2024, which was met with acclaim from critics and LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations like GLAAD.

In preparation for this new chapter of The FMs, Namer gathered Ithaca-based trans musicians Bubba Crumrine on guitars, Basim Hussain on synths and keys, and Nick Scollard on drums. Now reformed, The FMs have returned for their newest album, 51122.

The title coincides with the date of Rex’s passing, and in many ways is a simultaneous goodbye and thank you to Rex’s incredible contributions to the band and the world as an artist throughout their life and musical career. 51122 contains the last recordings of Frankie’s voice to be published ever, including in a pre-release single that came in the form of a Joy Division cover– a tribute to one of the original duo’s favorite bands and Frankie’s favorite track of theirs.

“It’s also a bit somber being the last music that I think will ever be released with Frankie’s incredible, powerful, unique voice. I think there’s something about that that makes me remember they are really gone, like an orchid blooming from a coffin nail. 51122 is the date Frankie passed away, but is also a type of symbol in a way, or perhaps a word. I’m not sure what that meaning is yet, perhaps the orchid needs to grow.”

      – Matte Namer

With influences ranging from lo-fi all the way to disco, 51122 is a dreamy, gritty, synth-y collection that stands as an undeniable testament to how far the band has come while simultaneously honoring where and with whom it all began.

Tracks like “You Feel Like God” and “A Means To An End” take listeners on a guitar-infused synth adventure through space and complex interpersonal relationships, while songs like the rock-ballad “Deviant” reflect upon and reject concepts of deviance and societal other-ing over acoustic guitar and floating piano.

      The FMs 51122
      Photo: Dylan Mars Greenberg

“Domino” cuts to the bone with unforgettable vocals, gritty guitars, and a sharp bass line, putting what The FMs can do when they lean full-on into the punk sound on full display- and the impact is undeniably felt.

Throughout 51122, the skills of Namer, Rex, Crumrine, Hussain, and Scollard are on full display- not a moment goes by where there’s a lack of sonic interest. Whether it be a dystopic cyber-future like in “Future Pope” or the wistful nostalgia of  “Record Store”, each track off of the album paints a vivid picture effortlessly.  51122 is above all a triumph- a sign that The FMs will go on, and so will Frankie Rex and their unrelenting musical spirit.

In celebration of 51122’s release, The FMs have announced a set of album release parties on November 22 and 23. On Friday the 22, the band will pay a visit to Angry Mom Records in Ithaca, and on the 23 they’ll grace the stage of Berlin in Manhattan for a joint album release party and queer rock showcase. Queens Jazz Trail flushing town hall

A cornerstone cultural and creative hub for the people of Queens, the Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts housed within Flushing Town Hall is a thriving multi-disciplinary arts center that boasts a theater, gallery, garden, classroom, and rehearsal space.

In membership with the New York City Cultural Institutions Group and in affiliation with the Smithsonian, the FCCA gave Flushing Town a major renovation to accommodate their versatile programming that has brought the Queens community together for over thirty years.

Originally written by Marc. H Miller, illustrated by Tony Millionaire, and designed by Cindy Ho, The Queens Jazz Trail was an endeavor pursued by the FCCA in the hopes of shedding light on Queens’ neglected history as a key part of the jazz scene from the 1920s onwards.

    • Green River Festival Announces 2025 Lineup

Green River Festival has announced the first headliners and musical acts to be featured in their 2025 lineup. Included among the top artists are Courtney Barnett, Futurebirds, Mt. Joy, and Waxahatchee

Originating as the Upcountry Balloon Fair and local radio station WRSI’s anniversary celebration before merging into the event so many know and love today, the Green River Festival was born of uniquely local roots. Merging in the following years and donning the moniker recognized today, the Festival has grown into an event recognized by the New York Times as one of “fifty essential summer music festivals.”

Featuring a powerful lineup of over 40 acts across four stages in addition to local beverages, bites, handmade crafts from The Makers Market, and a wide variety of children’s activities, the festival is an exciting annual celebration of music and community from Greenfield locals to international names.

Returning for its 39th year, the festival will grace the Franklin County Fairgrounds once more on June 20, 21, and 22. Fresh off of the presses, the first of Green River Festival’s 2025 acts have been announced.

The first headliner comes in the form of Mt. Joy, a Philadelphia and Los Angeles-based indie folk band that have made quite the name for themselves with three remarkably acclaimed albums over the past six years with multiple singles that have reached #1 at AAA Radio and amassed millions of streams to boot.

One of Australia’s most successful internationally performing musical acts and Green River’s second headliner is Courtney Barnett, a deft lyricist and virtuosic guitarist. With a nomination for Best New Artist at the Grammys, several accolades, and five albums under her belt including her iconic 2015 debut Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit and collaboration with Kurt Vile Lotta Sea Lice, Barnett’s set will not be one to miss.

Waxahatchee is Green River Festival’s third headliner, as well as Katie Crutchfield’s musical moniker in which she has explored several genres as a Grammy nominated singer-songwriter. Spanning sounds from lo-fi folk to alternative country, Crutchfield is unafraid of experimentation and has embraced it time and time again over the course of her six critically acclaimed albums.

Southern musician MJ Lenderman got his start as a guitarist in Asheville, North Carolina self-booking tours for his own works and the group Wednesday. After his third solo album, Boat Songs, suddenly caught traction, folks were waiting with bated breath for his next release which would come in the form of Manning Fireworks, 39 minutes of introspection and rusted-wire guitar solos that indie rock fans are sure to enjoy.

      julien baker

Singer-songwriters Julien Baker and TORRES have teamed up for a tour-de-force project that melds their sound from indie-rock to country. Julien Baker, recognizable to most as one-third of the indie powerhouse unit Boygenius alongside Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers, is noted for her personal lyrics and vulnerable delivery floating above everything from just piano and guitar to keyboards and a rhythm section. TORRES’ raw vocals and insightful lyrics are sure to pair perfectly with Baker’s work, introducing folk, electronic, and rock influences to the project.

In addition to the event’s leading names, 2025’s lineup so far includes instrumental trio LA LOM, reggae and hip-hop lyricist Kabada Pyramid, psychedelic funk trio BALTHVS, indie-folk duo Ocie Elliott, roots music icon and western Mass fan favorite Kathleen Edwards, and progressive American roots fusion unit Futurebirds.

Performances can also be expected from the self-produced award-winning guitarist, songwriter, and band leader Grace Bowers (who’s achieved such feats at only 18 years old), Zella Day, Jesse Woods, and Beau Bedford uniting as Chaparelle to highlight Country’s golden age, energetic roots duo AJ Lee & Blue Summit, storytelling folk artist Olive Klug, and folk/country singer-songwriter Merce Lemon.

The excitement doesn’t end here, either- Green River Festival has teased that the announcement of more names and artists is on the horizon.
