  • The World Music Institute Presents Dancing the Gods Festival at Ailey Citigroup Theater

The World Music Institute has announced their 12th annual Dancing the Gods festival. For the first time, the celebration will occur at Ailey Citigroup Theater.

From April 14-15 audience members will be treated to spectacular performances from India’s two leading dancers Sreelakshmy Govardhanan and Praveen Kumar. Programs will kick off with a slide presentation titled Epics, Poetry and Indian Dance from festival curator, dance expert and storyteller Rajika Puri.

Since 1985, The World Music Institute has been recognized as one of the most stellar presenters of world music and dance within the United States. The non-profit organization strives to present the best in traditional and contemporary music with a myriad of cultural dances. Their mission is to educate people on the world’s rich cultural traditions, promoting awareness and appreciation and encouraging cross-cultural dialog and exchange. The program is partially supported by public funds from the New York State Council, Office of the Governor, New York State Legislature, and New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

Sreelakshmy Govardhanan is a remarkable woman with numerous talents. She is a renowned creative dancer, choreographer and teacher of Kuchipudi and the founder and Artistic Director of a center for learning, performance and research known as the Avantika Space. Additionally Govardhanan is  a trained psychologist who fuses her professional perspective with her art. She uses this to educate young minds through workshops, classes, seminars and lecture demonstrations.

In the Dancing the Gods festival, Govardhanan will explore the Nritta, Nrutya and Natya elements of Kuchipudi through a repertoire set in the format of Margam. Kuchipudi is a dance originating from the theatrical and dance traditions of Andhra Pradesh. It was named after the village called Kuchelapuram. Traditionally the dance is presented by troupes of male actor-dancers who celebrate festivals dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The dance has now transformed into a solo form, which is today popular around the world.

Praveen Kumar was born into a family of artists and showed a passion for dance at a very young age. He learned to appreciate the aesthetic depths of Bharatanatyam after studying with the esteemed guru of Bangalore, the late Smt. Narmada. Currently, Kumar studies with Guru Prof. C.V.Chandrasekhar runs the Chithkala School of Dance in Bangalore. In his solo performance for the festival, he will explore a man’s journey as a companion, admirer, and a friend through various facets of life. Musicians will provide South Indian traditional music for this prodigious production.

Rajika Puri has performed all over Latin America, Europe, Malaysia, the US and India, and in New York at the Asia Society and Ailey Theaters. Prior to Puri’s devotion to western theater, she danced internationally in solo recitals of Bharatanatyam and Odissi for several years. Her success in the Lincoln Center Theater’s “The Transposed Heads”inspired her to develop a form of dance storytelling  called ‘Sutradhari Natyam’. The performance is accomplished through songs in Indian languages and English narration with excerpts from dances, spoken rhythms and chants. In ‘Eleni of Sparta’ or ‘Helen of Troy’, Puri sang in ancient Greek.

  • Daisy The Great Share Indie Pop Video For “I Don’t Wanna Fall”

NY-based indie pop band Daisy the Great have just released the music video for “I Don’t Wanna Fall” from their new album All You Need Is Time. To celebrate the album release, the band will embark on another nationwide tour as headliners. Daisy the Great’s All You Need Is Time Tour begins April 12th at Brighton Music Hall in Allston, MA, making their final destination at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Daisy the Great is an American indie pop band from Brooklyn led by Kelley Nicole Dugan and Mina Walker. The song “Record Player” from their debut album was released in August 2021, with additional verses and production performed by AJR. It went to number 6 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart.

    Daisy the Great

The band stated, “The “I Don’t Wanna Fall” music video is a compilation of footage from our most recent tour. It follows us on the road, backstage and on stage at the shows. We chose to pair “I Don’t Wanna Fall” with this very sweet docu-style footage because it felt really heartwarming and also heartbreaking to watch us so happy and in our element, tied up with this song about the temporary nature of good things. It feels important to remember to really live in the joyful moment when you’re in it, because everything comes and goes. The song was initially about a romantic relationship, but it brought new importance to the music to recontextualize it using our relationship with our audience and with live music in general. We love touring and we are very lucky to have our first headline tour EVER coming up this spring!!! We’re so excited to play all over the US. We hope you love the video and can’t wait to see you on the road.”

Both Kelley Nicole Dugan and Mina Walker make folk-inflected indie rock together that spans a multitude of moods, capable of being clever, devastating, simultaneous pop to powerhouse balladry. The pair first met as acting majors at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts where they began co-writing a musical about a fictional band before realizing they could make it happen in real life and set out as Daisy the Great.

Daisy The Great Share Music Video For “I Don’t Wanna Fall”

“Our music is generally pretty introspective, and we are often interested in the complexities or ironies we see within ourselves,” Dugan says. “That’s something we love about writing—you can say something small and delicate and true that maybe feels scary to say, but once you put it out there, it can turn into a comfort for anyone that might also be feeling that way.”

  • Fever Dolls Release Indie Single “Hate Myself (For Loving You)”

Burlington‘s indie rock duo Fever Dolls have just released “Hate Myself (For Loving You)” on February 17th. The single is an infectious heartache anthem for fans of Kevin Morby and Lord Huron.

Fever Dolls Release Indie Rock Single “Hate Myself (For Loving You)”

Active since 2018, Fever Dolls is comprised of songwriter Evan Allis and singer Renn Mulloy. Formed 2018, Fever Dolls was born out of a desire to forego the self-seriousness of modern rock in favor of big hooks, clever lyrics, and broad musical range. The duo have over 10 million streams on Spotify, over 150,000 views on YouTube, and have Best Music Video Award from Gorilla River Music Video Festival 2019 (Adeline).

Fever Dolls Release Indie Rock Single “Hate Myself (For Loving You)”

“If you were to ask me to name the qualities that unite my favorite bands, I would say, “a great bar band that sounds like it would write an amazing Broadway musical.” Fever Dolls meets and far surpasses that standard”

    – Vox
Fever Dolls Release Indie Rock Single “Hate Myself (For Loving You)”

By blending indie rock and Americana influences, “Hate Myself” showcases the lyrical storytelling that Vox’s Emily St. James praised as sounding like “a great bar band that would write an amazing Broadway musical,” and features collaborators Willoughby Morse (Cavetown), Riley Geare (Caroline Rose), and Dan Rome (Noah Kahan).

Evan Allis says that, “Hate Myself” was one of those songs that I kept coming back to when I really struggled with questions about the “sound of the band,” because it seemed to capture what I thought was special about Fever Dolls: anthemic choruses, hypnotic guitar riffs, and close vocal harmonies that sound descended from both classic country and Motown.”

“Lyrically, “Hate Myself (for Loving You)” strikes a balance between self-deprecation and self-delusion. There’s plenty of confessional songwriting that captures the initial disorientation, but not much that speaks to the mixture of emotions that lingers after the hurt has worn off. The narrator of “Hate Myself” is saying “good riddance,” even while acknowledging their own contribution to a toxic relationship. There are a lot of “kiss-off” songs and “please take me back” songs, but “Hate Myself” lives in that murky middle-ground where most people I know reside after a split. It’s our anthem for the anger/acceptance stage of the break-up grief cycle.”

  • Harriman State Park Featured in Sheridan Rúitín Music Video

Catskills unique Irish folk band Sheridan Rúitín has just released a video filmed on a mountain top for their original song “Rebels of the Night” on January 1st.

Along with this, the band has also just posted their upcoming tour where you can find all the details for coming shows and events, including 6 shows in NY around February and March. The band is currently busy working on a new song that will come with a music video most likely the first or second week of February as well.

As for the video, “Rebels of the Night” was filmed in the desolate wilderness of Harriman State Park, Rockland County. There are many unique trails and hikes around this part of Upstate NY, the video shows some of the unique views between Bear Mountain and Anthony’s Nose in the Hudson Highlands. To film the video, the crew carried a whole drum set up along with all of the other instruments and hiked up the mountain the weekend before Thanksgiving. Producing amazing footage to match the catchy Irish tune of their new song “Rebels of the Night.”

Sheridan Rúitín New Music Video And Upcoming Tour
Sheridan Rúitín at Harriman State Park

In the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, as more pubs and restaurants were shutting their doors, Billy Houlihan became more and more of a regular at his next-door neighbor’s (Sheridan’s) pub. One evening in May of 2020, Billy brought his guitar over to the pub and he and Sheridan sat at the bar, singing rebel songs and drinking beer. Sheridan got quite into the moment while singing “The Kerry Recruit,” leading him to tumble off his barstool ultimately breaking his ankle (Irish: Rúitín) in 2 places. In the words of Sheridan: “Me feckin leg is in bits.”

Sheridan Rúitín now had an official band name and began recording songs and videos to release on YouTube. As pubs and restaurants were slowly opening back up, the family band began playing many gigs and were joined by old musician friends, John Damiano and Michael Zayas. Towards the end of 2021, the group began creating their own arrangements of traditional songs and writing a few originals to eventually become their debut album, “Rebels in the Night.” The album saw much success in pre-orders from all over the world. “Rebels in the Night” was released on March 6, 2022, and Sheridan Rúitín went on tour the whole month in support of their debut album.

The band has since been added to the bills of major Irish festivals in the USA, and is currently working on new music and another album. Sheridan Rúitín takes over the New York suburbia Irish music scene by filling the gap between Celtic rock and traditional Irish folk ballads.
