In Focus: Tedeschi Trucks Band Holds Epic Garden Party at MSG, featuring Trey Anastasio, Norah Jones, & Lukas Nelson

Tedeschi Trucks band made their debut with a ‘Garden Party’ at Madison Square Garden (MSG) on Friday, September 29, with the help of friends Trey Anastasio, Lukas Nelson and Norah Jones. There was some intense rain causing serious flooding around this day, but luckily the show went on.

The performance recalled Derek Trucks sitting in with Phish, just a month prior for the Vermont Flood benefit. And now it looked like New York City would be flooding, but only an outpouring of love and music rained down at MSG this evening.

Lukas Nelson and Promise Of The Real opened up the night with a rocking, bluesy set full of originals including a heartfelt “Georgia” and a thumping “Something Real” to close up their set.

When it was time for the main act, the first reaction was “Boy do they have a large band even without three special guests!” The full Tedeschi Trucks Band played a memorable show with their guests, one that was full of surprises which included “The Seeker” & “Layla” with Trey sitting in, Susan killing it on “Sugaree”, Norah and Susan on “Have a Little Faith in Me”, TTB bangers like “Midnight in Harlem” and “Made up Mind”.

The encore included “A Song For You” with Lukas Nelson and “Soul Sweet Song”. The band brought out the whole crew including Trey, Lukas, & Norah for two Sly and the Family Stone songs including “Sing a Simple Song” and “I Want to Take you Higher,” an incredible ending to a phenomenal night.

Borderland Festival Returns for 5th Year, Lineup Announced

Borderland Festival announces it will be returning for its 5th year to Knox Farm State Park, just 15 minutes from downtown Buffalo, featuring many well-known and legendary acts from Sept. 15-17.

Borderland Festival is one of the region’s most popular music and art festivals, taking place at Knox State Farm. The three-day experience will host more than 20 bands on two stages from Sept. 15-17. Festival goers can expect a diverse mix of music spanning the genres of rock, country, and Americana, along with performances from local musicians. Aside from the music, there will be a range of artisans, axe throwing, Kidsland, local chefs and food trucks, and alcohol from local breweries.

The 2023 lineup features Trey Anastasio with Classic TAB from the legendary jam band Phish on Saturday night. Anastasio is known as the co-founder of the band and the lead guitarist, receiving several Grammy nominations for his work and a Tony nomination for “Best Original Score” in 2013 for writing the music to Hands on a Hardbody. For the first time, the festival will host a Friday night headliner with jam band Goose, a four-piece indie groove band from Norwalk, Connecticut. The band is made up of members Peter Anspach, Jeff Arevalo, Ben Atkind, Rick Mitarotonda, and Trevor Weekz, recently closing out five nights at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester.

One of Buffalo’s own favorite bands, moe. will also be closing out the weekend for a sunset performance on Sunday, Sept. 17. The band has had a lot of success and longevity since its creation due to its engaged fanbase, aka the fa.moe.ly which has led them to do headline tours, international festival sets, music-themed cruises, and sold-out shows alongside countless household-name artists. The artist lineup also includes Dawes, The Infamous Stringdusters, Sammy Rae & Friends, Neal Francis, Mighty Poplar, The 502s, Krasno/Moore Project, and a full weekend of local bands.

Tickets are on sale now, featuring three-day weekend passes, single-day “anyday” tickets, three-day VIP passes are sold out, camping passes, and more. Kids ten and under are free if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Catbird Takes Flight at Bethel Woods

54 years ago, Max Yasger leased out a farm field he owned for what would turn out to be one of, if not, the most noted music festivals in history. The Catbird Music Festival took to these hollowed grounds over August 19-20, in search of the spirit that is Woodstock.

The Lumineers

The name of the festival was inspired by the Catbird used in the original 1969 festival artwork. This being 2023 tie die, long hair, and bare footing could be seen co-joined with cell phones, microchipped wrist bands, and VIP and Platinum packages. No matter your status, the vibe from those attending made it impossible to distinguish 2023 from 1969.

Glamping

Camping was allowed at Bethel Woods, the first time since M ountain Jam 2019. You had your options of car camping, RV camping, or glamping in canvas tents offering either a twin or a queen bed. Throughout the grounds young and old, couples, groups and families intermingled as one.

Over the course of two the days (August 19 – 20, 2023) at the Bethel Woods Center for the Art s, 23 musical acts performed on two stages. The scheduling of sets enabled people to stroll from stage to stage and not have to choose which performers to listen to.

Day 1 had was something for everyone: Trampled by Turtles, J ames Bay, 49 Winchester and Margo Price to name a few. Throw in Band of Horses along with headliners T he Lumineers and you could not go wrong.

Women took a prominent role in the festival with Adia Vicoria and Allison Russell closing out the Gala Music stage on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Day 2 of Catbird included rising jam band Eggy and a veteran jam band Trey Anastasio band. The day also featured T yler Childs as the headliner as well as Dispatch, Amos Lee, Charley Crocket t and more.

Eggy played a funky and fun set to start off this full day of music. The Soul Rebels brought their authentic New Orleans, horns rich sound to Bethel. Dispatch played a reggae filled, groovy set which included a nod to the good ol Grateful Dead with a “Friend of the Devil” cover.

Trey Anastasio Band played a set filled with TAB and Phish classics including Moma Dance, About to Run, Wolfman’s Brother, and a guitar raising, feedback chasing First Tube to close out their set.

Previous attempts to emulate the original Woodstock Music and Arts Festival have not measured up. The Catbird Music Festival seems to have found the sweet spot. Let’s hope this bird will migrate back to the Hudson Valley in 2024 and build another nest of peace, love and music.

Karina Rykman Releases “Joyride” Single and Video, debut Album due in August

Standout singer, songwriter, and bassist Karina Rykman dropped her first single and title track from her upcoming debut album JOYRIDE. The project is set to be released on August 18 and marks Rykman’s first collection of songs since she’s put out a slew of acclaimed singles dating back to 2019.

Karina Rykman was born and raised in New York City. She found music at an early age, making her way around the city performing at and attending live music venues. By the end of her time at NYU she had appeared on America’s Got Talent and the TODAY show. As part of Marco Benevento’s band, Rykman performed dates with Vulfpeck, Dispatch, and The Claypool Lennon Delirium.

Rykman’s own band is made up of Adam November (guitar, loopers, effects) and Chris Corsico (drums). Together the group has made a name for themselves due to their strong instrumentation, funky groove, layered production, and often genreless sound.

All these elements help to make “Joyride” such an interesting and fun listen. The track features a strong vocal performance from Rkyman, whose breathy voice and wistful lyrics could compete with any indie-pop record. The song’s tasteful synths and syrupy bass drive the beat toward an almost psychedelic sound. Joyride also features a guitar performance from JOYRIDE co-producer Trey Anastasio.

’Joyride’ is about being driven insane as you’re kept awake by music in your head all night – so much so that eventually, you give up and ask your partner to take you on a joyride instead of tossing and turning
Karina Rykman

The connection between Rkyman and Anastasio goes back to childhood. Rykman went to middle school with the Phish star’s daughters and became family friends because of it. However, the two had no musical relationship until they both performed at Peach Music Festival in Scranton. Anastasio became interested in being a part of Rykman’s first album, offering the use of his iconic Vermont studio “The Barn.”

When I first heard the early demos, the first thing I said was more Karina… Turn up the bass, sing more, and step out. What makes me most happy about the finished album now is that to my ears, it sounds like Karina unapologetically. It has her nature. It has her incredible joyous outlook that I know is real because I saw it in her when she was a kid.

JOYRIDE was written and recorded with Rykyman’s childhood friend, producer Gabe Monro. Trey Anastasio’s guitar appears on five of the album’s nine tracks. Legendary mixer Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Swans, Ramones) also helped to create the project.

“You only get to make your first album once,” she adds, “and I couldn’t be prouder of what we created with this one. It’s a moment in time – the first of what I hope to be a lifetime of making records and touring behind them.
