  • Mersiv Breaks Outside Conventional Boundaries in Buffalo 

    Dubstep DJ Mersiv stopped in Buffalo on Dec. 9 for the final stretch on his latest tour. The Town Ballroom was ready for their reunion with Mersiv since his last appearance there one year ago, and he did not disappoint.

    The openers were stacked with heavy bass and passion. Local artist Daggz kicked off the night with his experimental bass and was followed up by Heyz. Australian artist SIPPY had the crowd wooed with her heavy-hitting beats.

    Mersiv finally took over the stage with a prompt that read, “Outside the Prescribed or Conventional Boundaries or Limits. Enjoy Your Journey Fellow Travelers.” And just like that the young producer took his audience on a journey through finding presence in sound, so much so that even the bass blew out the speakers for five minutes.

    He performed many tracks off of his 2023 album Out of Bounds including “I Like It When You Move” and “Top Floor.” He brings a meditative force through his live show. His use of fun visuals and insane energy make the positive atmosphere super contagious.

    The Mersiv Sound Project is the brainchild of Anderson Benoit Gallegos who has sought to spread healing energy through his sound, and fans would argue he does just that. His dark and loud sound pays homage to the duality of life. Both the highs and lows of what makes every human…human. It’s through these struggles that Gallegos shares we can rise from but never as ways to define us.

    The growing artist brings a particular energy into EDM through mysterious psychedelia. Mersiv played fun mixes throughout his set and performed his popular song with Wreckno, “Bounce.” Nothing quite brought the heat though until he played “Beautiful & Filthy.” The fans were seen head-banging throughout Buffalo’s Town Ballroom.

  • Disco Biscuits “Why We Dance Tour” stops in Albany and Buffalo in March

    Trancefusion pioneers the Disco Biscuits will embark on a lengthy winter/spring tour to start 2024, with shows at Empire Live in Albany and Town Ballroom in Buffalo, named the “Why We Dance Tour.”

    With an impressive touring schedule in 2023 – more than 70 shows, with three more lined up for late December – and the return of a Disco Biscuits festival, BISCOLAND, the band is not slowing down in the coming new year.

    The “Why We Dance Tour” includes 13 previously announced dates, and adds 20 more shows, with a few more still to be announced.

    Bassist Marc Brownstein shares the excitement for the band looking ahead to 2024:

    We are so excited for these late winter and spring dates! 2024 starts off with a bang and is filled with amazing venues, some of which are new to us like Stage AE, College Street, and the Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville, while some are old faves like the Kirby, the HOBs in Boston and New Orleans, and ultimately the Tabernacle. We are looking forward to heating up the country from west to east this winter and spring!

  • In Focus: The Tea Party Brings The Heat to Buffalo

    The Tea Party, a Canadian rock band formed in 1996 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada started their fall 2023 tour in Buffalo on Oct 13, to a sold-out crowd at the famous Town Ballroom.

    The evening began with an intimate VIP acoustic set from the band to a crowd of steadfast fans on the Oxford Pennant stage of the Town Ballroom. This smaller stage worked well for this intimate VIP crowd of around seventy people. A handful of stories from the road along with the songs played made the moment quite special.

    The opening act, Human Kebab, a Canadian DJ from Stouffville, Ontario, Canada began the night in the main ballroom in support of The Tea Party by spinning and mixing many genres of high-energy music, including, but not limited to Hip-Hop, Rock, Alternative, Electronic and more.

    For the main event, fans of The Tea Party lined up early for night one of this two-night run at the Ballroom as to make sure to get a great spot as close to the stage as possible for what would be an evening they would not soon forget.

    As the house lights went down and the walk-on music started, the sold-out crowd erupted with cheers and applause. The energy was high from the beginning all the way to the end of the show with everyone in attendance hanging on to every word sung, and every note played throughout the night.

  • JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown Steam-rolled Buffalo’s Town Ballroom 

    Iconic rappers JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown have left zero crumbs on their stops through the east coast on their SCARING THE HOES tour. Their show in Buffalo Aug. 1 was no exception to this as they performed for a sold out crowd at the Town Ballroom.

    Opener DJ_Dave brought her experimental production to Buffalo by performing her music using code. She combines her electronic pop music and love for tech to create a newfound fluidity to the industry. Her visuals go beyond just cool tech symbols because she is live coding on stage, refereed to as algorave which is both impressive and entertaining to watch.

    Later on JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown took over the stage. Their presence can not be taken lightly because they had fans going crazy from start to finish. They began the night introducing themselves and immediately going into their track “Lean Beef Patty.” With just 30 seconds in the energy was insane. The rappers were spraying water into the crowd, climbing on top of the barricade, and interacting with fans nonstop.

    This tour is in honor of the two rappers’ joint album SCARING THE HOES which released earlier this year. After much anticipation it was especially satisfying for fans to get to see the collaborative talent of these two in action. Even with many songs of theirs being together they still took the time to perform a section of the show by themselves.

    JPEGMAFIA performed fun covers of songs by Carly Rae Jepsen and Denzel Curry. Fans especially got pumped up when he rapped his hit “1539 N. Calvert.” Danny Brown then came back on stage with JPEG, then gave the audience a solo show. The crowd got even more excited for this and couldn’t stop chanting his name.

    Danny performed his popular song “Really Doe” that features Kendrick Lamar. This track had people immediately riling up and opening up the pit for mosh pits. It’s so impressive to watch both Danny and JPEG rap in person because there is no gimmicks. Neither of the artists use a backing track. This means every word you hear them rap live is them actually rapping live, and if they mess up it becomes 10x more obvious to the audience watching.

    The two finished off the night with “SCARING THE HOES” and “Fentanyl Tester.” The packed in crowd was lit with rage and sweat from the non-stop party. Something about Danny Brown finally being back in Buffalo after all these years and visuals that paid homage to old-school video games gave a nostalgic feel.

  • Declan McKenna Travels Across Seas for a Buffalo Show 

    Alternative/indie star Declan McKenna made a stop at the Town Ballroom in Buffalo for The Big Return tour May 31. This was an early start to the English artist’s venture around North America.

    European natives the Oracle Sisters opened up the show with their alternative roots and light-hearted energy on stage. The group is composed of Lewis Lazar, Christopher Willatt, and Julia Johansen. Their use of bright instrumentation matched with a simplistic elegance make for a captivating stage performance.

    Declan instantly swooned the crowd with his stage presence from his silk robe to his black shades. He exudes this rockstar attitude while creating that safe space for young indie kids. Declan opened up the night with his hit off of his 2020 album Zeros, “Beautiful Faces.”

    The young musician came back to his roots by playing songs off of his first album What Do You Think About the Car?. Some of which include, “Paracetamol” and “Listen to Your Friends.” Nothing got the crowd more hyped up though until Declan performed his record breaking single, “Brazil” which looks to critique FIFA and their shady practices.

    Declan McKenna Attacks the System

    The English singer/songwriter is no stranger to making music that hyper-analyzes the systems put in place to disenfranchise the less fortunate. Another popular single that does just that is “British Bombs” which Declan played in his encore. This song exudes the frustration that the artist feels towards the British government’s lack of care towards civilian deaths that they cause. He examines the hypocrisy of them while creating a strong crescendo to exude his anger. When closing the night in Buffalo with this the whole crowd was seen jumping and screaming alongside Declan.

  • In Focus: Andrew McMahon Delivers Colorful, Sold-Out Performance at Town Ballroom in Buffalo

    Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness wrapped up a two-week east coast tour with a sold out performance at Town Ballroom in Buffalo on Wednesday, May 24.  The tour, which also featured stops in Syracuse and Albany, was in support of the band’s latest release Tilt at the Wind No More. 

    Few in the music industry today tout the resume that Andrew McMahon has.  His original rise to fame came as the lead singer of the early 2000’s emo rock band Something Corporate.  In 2004 McMahon formed Jack’s Mannequin, and later in 2014 would begin Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, a project that continues today.  All along the way, McMahon has crafted stellar piano-rock tracks and has amassed a large and devoted following of fans who flock to his live concerts.  His current band features Bob Anderson (guitar), Zac Clark (keyboards), Jay McMillian (drums) and Mikey Wagner (bass guitar).  

    Early arriving fans on Wednesday night were treated to an opening performance by Griffin William Sherry.  Known for his work with independent-folk rock band The Ghost of Paul Revere, Sherry delighted the audience with a set of acoustic folk tracks.  At times, Sherry’s strong vocals channeled singer/song writers such as Nathaniel Rateliff and Chris Stapleton.

    Up next were The Unlikely Candidates, from Fort Worth, Texas.  To describe their set as high energy would be an understatement.  From the cryptic opening guitar rift of “Sunshine” to the final notes of set closer “Novocaine”, singer Kyle Morris took captive hold of the audience.  Morris strutted the stage, leapt in the air,  twirled his microphone, at times throwing it high in the air before catching it.  Morris would lean in close over the audience, locking eyes with those in the front row, never missing a lyrical beat.  A mid-set cover of the A-ha classic “Take on Me” had the showroom bursting with energy. The band was sure to gain many new fans following their set.

    Finally, it was time for Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness.  The standing room only club was packed elbow to elbow with little room to maneuver, with the crowd in eager anticipation of the band’s arrival.  Once the houselights dimmed, a lone spotlight shone into the crowd.  The light illuminated McMahon, who was standing in the back of the club, and began performing the slow moving, reflective “Nobody Tells You When You’re Young”.  McMahon made his way slowly to the stage, providing brief and intimate performances for those whose path he encountered.  Once arriving to the stage, McMahon was joined by his bandmates who immediately launched into “The Mixed Tape,” a familiar fan favorite from McMahon’s Jack’s Mannequin days.

    While the music was at the forefront, the spectacle of an Andrew McMahon performance was not missing on this night.  McMahon donned a colorful, light up cape during “Stars”.  He crowd surfed while riding an inflatable llama, making it all the way to the top tier of the club.  During “Synesthesia”, McMahon brought a multi-colored parachute into the crowd, singing the song’s chorus from underneath.  In all, McMahon and his band would roll through a 23 song set, spanning over twenty years worth of music.  It was a memorable evening for those in attendance, one that would be sure to have fans clamoring for a return performance in the near future.

  • Snarky Puppy Delivers a Captivating Performance in Buffalo

    Snarky Puppy took to the stage at Buffalo’s Town Ballroom on Thursday, April 6th to a sold out crowd. They gave an electrifying performance that left no doubt as to why they are one of the most exciting and innovative bands in the music industry today. Led by bassist and composer Michael League, the 12-piece ensemble showcased their exceptional musicianship. With each member contributing to the vibrant and complex sound that has made them a fan favorite.

    From the moment they hit the stage, Snarky Puppy had the crowd on their feet with their unique blend of jazz, funk, and world music. The opening number, “Trinity” set the tone for the evening, with its infectious groove and intricate melodic lines. The band’s energy and enthusiasm were infectious, and their seamless and intuitive interaction created a rich and dynamic performance.

    The rhythm section was tight, with drummer Robert Searight and percussionist Marcelo Woloski providing the perfect foundation for the band’s melodic and harmonic explorations. Michael League’s bass playing was exceptional, laying down deep grooves and leading the band with his melodic and harmonic sensibility.

    The setlist featured a mix of old favorites and new material, all delivered with the band’s trademark energy and flair. “Thing of Gold,” another standout track, was a tour-de-force of jazz-funk fusion, with its driving beat and virtuosic solos. “What About Me?” was another highlight, with its funky bassline and catchy melody.

    Throughout the evening, each member of the ensemble was given the opportunity to shine with captivating solos. The band’s ability to seamlessly blend different genres of music was a testament to their exceptional musicianship and creativity. Michael League’s leadership was particularly noteworthy, guiding the ensemble with precision and passion.

    Snarky Puppy’s live show was an unforgettable experience that showcased their exceptional musicianship and creativity. Their unique fusion of jazz, funk, and world music is a breath of fresh air in the music industry. Their live performance left no doubt as to why they are one of the most exciting and innovative bands around. If you have the chance to see Snarky Puppy live, do not hesitate – it’s an experience that you won’t soon forget.

  • EDM Artist Kayzo Takes Over Buffalo’s Town Ballroom

    Electronic artist Kayzo performed for Buffalo locals at the Town Ballroom for his Unleashed XL tour on Thursday, March 16. His blend of EDM and rock has introduced a new wave of dubstep, bringing drums and guitar into his live shows to add a unique aspect to his sets.

    Openers of the night included Automhate who at just 15 years old is making a name for himself on this tour. Followed by riddim producer Infekt and popular dubstep artist Ray Volpe. All of which kept the crowd pumped up before Kayzo took the stage and even blew a speaker beforehand.

    Kayzo, also known as Hayden Capuozzo, had his career first take off in 2012 when he won Insomniac’s Discovery Project challenge. This then started a ripple effect for his growing fandom around the world. He later started playing for renowned festivals and venues. In 2018 Kayzo launched his very own record label Welcome Records further leaving his imprint in the scene as well as bringing attention to other new talent.

    When Kayzo took the stage at the Town Ballroom a wave of electric energy filled the venue. The popular producer not only knows how to hype up a crowd but also introduce different elements into the EDM scene that make his shows a new experience. Joined by Tyler Lacca on drums and Ben Havok on guitar, the trio were undeniably rage worthy.

    Kayzo performed many of his hits like “Battle Drums,” “Domination,” and “Suffocate.” He also performed remixes from various artists such as Sullivan King, John Summit, and Fred Again. The EDM producer does not shy away from doing what is different. As many EDM artists do he samples from popular songs. Although, what makes Kayzo standout is how he incorporates old school rock and metal into these tracks.

    This blend of live music and bass is something that fans don’t know they’re missing out on until they hear it live. Which paid mind to the nonstop mosh pits that opened up throughout the show. Opener Automhate even joined in on the moshing for his birthday celebration.

  • Mike Gordon Announces New Solo Album “Flying Games” and June/July Tour

    Mike Gordon has announced a new solo album, Flying Games, along with June and July tour dates, bringing him to Webster Hall in Manhattan and Town Ballroom in Buffalo.

    Flying Games (ATO Records/Megaplum) will be released on Friday, May 12 and is produced by Gordon, recorded by longtime collaborator Jared Slomoff, and mixed by GRAMMY-winning engineer Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, The War on Drugs).

    For me Tilting is about being in a situation or a relationship where you don’t know if your footing is solid, but then accepting that and realizing you enjoy the feeling of disorientation. Whether it’s playing music or driving or experiencing something new, I’ve always felt more present when I don’t know where I’m going next.

    The first single off Flying Games, the high velocity “Tilting” is out today and available at all DSPs and streaming services.

    The eclectic sixth solo LP from Mike Gordon, Flying Games is an album of constant and wildly hypnotic movement, each moment animated by unexpected sounds that morph and expand and spin off into their own strange orbits. Flying Games follows Gordon’s most recent solo works, 2020’s Noon and 2017’s OGOGO. The LP imbues elements of everything from disco and dancehall to psych-folk and funk into Gordon’s unfettered and expansive breed of rock music.

    To create Flying Games, the Vermont-based Gordon spent much of 2020’s lockdown and – writing and recording in his makeshift Megaplum home studio, immersing himself in sonic experiments ranging from the playfully spontaneous (constructing beats by banging wrenches against various pieces of farming equipment) to the hyper-specific and technical (programming a keyboard with chords sampled from’50s-era Hawaiian guitar records).

    As the songs became more fully formed, Gordon brought in contributions from his bandmates, drummer John Kimock, keyboardist Robert Walter, percussionist Craig Myers, and guitarist/pedal-steel player Scott Murawski, all of whom submitted parts from afar which were then woven by Gordon and Slomoff into the initial tracks. Revealing entirely new dimensions of the kaleidoscopic musicianship Gordon has displayed as Phish’s bassist for the last four decades, the result is a work of both extraordinary vision and daring execution.

    As someone who comes from a world of telepathic improvisation, the idea of one person layering sounds alone in a room might seem a bit against the mythos. But with this record I didn’t want to work in that traditional way of going into a studio with a band and recording for two weeks; I wanted to take my time and explore, and really go deep into the fabric of the music to see what we could find.

    Gordon, bassist for Phish, will celebrate the release of Flying Games with a tour that includes headline shows and performances at Peach, Northlands and Blue Ox festivals. Tickets for all newly announced headline dates go on sale Friday, March 17 with pre-sales underway.

  • Umphrey’s McGee UM 25 Anniversary Tour Stops in Buffalo this Summer

    The Umphrey’s McGee UM 25th anniversary tour will continue into the Northeast this summer, with five shows slated across Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine and New York.

    Umphrey’s McGee will make their debut at Great Cedar Showroom at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Connecticut, and make return visits to Hampton Beach, New Hampshire; Hyannis, Massachusetts; Portland, Maine; and Buffalo at Town Ballroom.

    With the exception of one show to be added on July 2nd, there will be no additional UM dates until mid-August so make plans now.

    Pre-sale will begin Wednesday, February 22, at 10:00 am ET; public on-sale will begin this Friday, February 24, at 10:00 am ET.
