  • Stephen Sanchez Triumphant Return to NYC

Returning to the vibrant heart of New York City, Stephen Sanchez brought his magnetic presence back to the city that never sleeps, echoing his last unforgettable performance at Irving Plaza in February. The anticipation hung in the air as fans, eagerly awaiting this reunion, gathered at Terminal 5.

Sanchez’s return was not just a concert; it was a homecoming, a testament to the enduring connection between the artist and the city that has played witness to his musical evolution. As the first notes reverberated through the venue, it was evident that this wasn’t merely a performance; it was a celebration of the artist’s journey, marked by growth, passion, and a profound connection with the diverse tapestry of New York’s music-loving community.

Stephen Sanchez’s concert at Terminal 5 unfolded as a captivating saga, weaving together the artist’s soulful melodies and a profound connection with his dedicated fanbase. Earlier in the day, Sanchez set the tone with a fan meetup and popup in Brooklyn, creating an intimate space for admirers to engage with the artist whose music had become the soundtrack to their lives.

As the night descended, Terminal 5 pulsed with anticipation. The setlist, featuring gems like “Something About Her” and “I Need You Most of All,” became a tapestry of emotions, each note echoing the artist’s journey. Sanchez’s stage presence was magnetic, drawing the audience into his world, especially the adoring fangirls who swooned with every nuanced movement. The unexpected covers of “Oh, Pretty Woman” and “Unchained Melody” showcased Sanchez’s ability to infuse timeless classics with his unique, soul-stirring style.

The concert reached its zenith during the spirited performance of “Shake,” where the venue echoed with the energy of both the artist and his ardent fans. The soulful ballad “Death of the Troubadour” revealed the depth of Sanchez’s songwriting, creating a poignant contrast in the midst of energetic numbers. The night concluded on an emotional crescendo with “Until I Found You,” leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who witnessed Sanchez’s musical brilliance. This wasn’t just a concert; it was an immersive experience, a testament to the profound connection between an artist and the community that cherishes his every note.

  • In Focus: LP Love Lines Tour hits Terminal 5

The last time I saw LP – Laura Pergolizzi – was in 2014, at Carnegie Hall, part of City Winery’s The Music Of Paul Simon. I happened to do a video session with her and was treated to a version of “Slip Slidin’ Away.”

Pergolizzi left quite a mark at the time and every time she came back through it seemed there was always a conflict and I never crossed paths again. That all finally changed last week at New York’s Terminal 5.

Love Lines was released earlier this year by BMG with the first single and video off it being “Golden”. A North American tour was announced starting late October running into November, followed by a few Mexico dates, playing to her sizeable Central and South American followings, then a few dates in Europe that go well into 2024.

LP’s live show is quite mesmerizing, especially for a club show, with a great deal of production, walking out to Frank Sinatra’s “My Way,” quite fitting as from the moment she hits the stage, she commands your attention and comes off as a powerhouse of sound. LP packs some pretty impressive whistling skills, big sing-along moments, and a crowd that seems to adore her every move. For this photographer, the highlight of LP at Terminal 5 was “Lost On You.”

    Termial 5, NYC November 9th, 2023 SETLIST:

Golden, Love Song, Burn It Down, Girls Go Wild, One Like You, The One That You Love, Big Time, Dayglow, Wild, Love Lines, Too Much, Hold The Light, Lost on You, Everybody’s Falling in Love, Blow, No Witness, Special, Long Goodbye, Hola, When We’re High, One Last Time

  • Polyphia Shreds with Sold Out Show at Terminal 5 NYC

Acclaimed instrumental progressive rock band, Polyphia, played a sold-out show at Terminal 5 in New York City last week (October 26, 2023) with support from Domi and JD Beck.

Jazz duo Domi and JD Beck opened the show, with keyboardist Domi Louna and drummer JD Beck delivering a very impressive and lengthy set. Their songs featured highly technical drum patterns and keys. They joked between songs about the quality of their performance, taking jabs at their own skills, which the audience rewarded with big laughs and applause. They played in a fully packed venue and thanked the crowd for showing up early for the set. They left the stage with big applause and a heightened anticipation of the headlining act.

After some brief intro music, Terminal 5 erupted in applause as blinding lights flashed, welcoming Polyphia to the stage. Guitarists and founders Tim Henson and Scott LePage are widely considered to be two of the most influential rock guitarists of today, and they are both Ibanez-endorsed artists with several signature guitars of their own. One of their biggest singles, “Playing God,” has garnered over 30 million views on YouTube. The platform was their initial proving ground when one of their earliest singles, “Impassion,” launched them into fame.

Their set at Terminal 5 included tracks from throughout their four-album catalog. For their encore, they played fan favorites, “Playing God” and “G.O.A.T.” They didn’t speak directly to the crowd at any point in the show, as they didn’t have microphones. But they held their guitars aloft in thanks at the end of the show and walked off with wide smiles on their faces. The crowd cheered them out and left more than satisfied.

You can listen to their latest album here and you can see their upcoming tour dates here. Check out Domi and JD Beck’s music here.

  • Yves Tumor Brings Glam and Goth Rock Revival to Terminal 5

Yves Tumor and it’s band are having quite a busy year, starting off with releasing their stellar fifth LP back in March via Warp Records. Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds) is a wildly experimental creative expression from an artist who has been pushing the boundaries of modern pop music ever since their debut. On Wednesday, October 4th, Yves Tumor took over Terminal 5 to kick off the fall leg of the tour which started in back in early spring.

Yves Tumor first broke onto the scene in 2015 with their enigmatic debut record, When Man Fails You. Featuring swirling ambient loops, the record immerses the listener into a haunting yet meditative experience. Yves evolved their musical approach in 2018 with the vibrant Safe In The Hands Of Love. The album starts off with a bit of ambient soundscapes but flourishes of hip hop, house, industrial, and glam rock rotate in and out as the record progresses. The LP is loaded with musical twists and turns but seamlessly blends with a rich sound palate and vintage production style.

Safe In The Hands Of Love catapulted Yves Tumor into a new realm of artistry and fanbase. In a modern world where music is saturated with artists trying to stand out, Yves truly crafted a brand new approach using elements from all over the musical spectrum. Glam rock ballads fade into pulsing ambient sections before raging darkwave grooves take over on the next track. Funky bass lines flutter all over the background while swirling synths fluctuate between Radiohead-like psychedelia and heavy industrial noise reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails. Neatly wrapped together with Yves deeply creative poetic verse, the music defies logic in the best way possible and remains surprisingly original.

Yves Tumor’s success with the goth and glam rock revival continued with a few more releases leading up to 2023. Heaven To A Tortured Mind in 2020 picked up right where Safe In The Hands Of Love left off while a shorter EP, The Asymptotical World in 2021, dove deeper into glam rock with a more forward guitar presence.

Fast forward to Wednesday night at Terminal 5; New York City was about to get their first taste of Yves Tumor’s latest record, which is a masterful culmination of the artist’s career to date. Fans flooded Terminal 5 with goth style, creating a palpable buzz in the room leading up to showtime. Once the houselights dropped, the pent up room erupted with a thunderous ovation to welcome the band on stage.

Yves Tumor and it’s band wasted no time, playing three songs from Praise A Lord… to open things up. The album shines with the insatiable Chris Greatti’s guitar rock vibe but still surprises the listener with inventive experimental passages throughout. “God Is a Circle” got things started with a thick bass line as Yves’ chanted vocals bounced around the room, “Sometimes, it feels like/There’s places in my mind that I can’t go/There’s people in my life I still don’t know, yeah/Wander ‘round, I just feel like a ghost in a well.”

The energy in the room was immense, growing stronger as the night went on. Yves loves to engage with the crowd, spending several songs in the pit letting fans sing along on the mic, signing autographs, and posing for photos all while the show rages on.

The chemistry between Yves and the rest of the band is unmatched. At one point, Yves tossed an umbrella he was posing with over to Greatti who held it in his mouth while shredding the outro to “Secrecy Is Incredibly Important To The Both Of Them.” The two frequently embraced mid song, both clearly not wanting the show to end.

All shows however, must come to an end, and Yves Tumor closed Wednesday night at Terminal 5 with Praise A Lord… closing track “Ebony Eye”. The lush song builds to a climactic finish that left the entire crowd begging for more. If it was not for house security pushing fans towards the exits, I truly do not think this show would have ever ended.

The tour does continue, and the show does not have to end if you can catch any of the dates left on their busy schedule. Head over to the band’s website for the full list of tour dates and if you have not seen Yves Tumor live, do not miss an opportunity to catch one of the most creative artists and invigorating live bands out there today.

  • Lizzy McAlpine’s “The End of The Movie Tour” Sells Out Terminal 5

On Tuesday, May 2nd Lizzy McAlpine returned to New York City and sold out the west side’s beloved Terminal 5. Only a week prior, Lizzy sold out Brooklyn Steel. One night in the big city just wasn’t enough for McAlpine on her “The End of The Movie Tour.” Her debut in the past couple of years has been one to witness. She has accumulated superfans who worship her relatable lyrics and sweet sound-blend of it-girl pop with classic grunge. The success of this tour has been a testament to her talent.

Lizzy McAlpine "The End of The Movie Tour" Sells Out New York City Terminal 5
    Photograph by Caroline Zeeman

Opener, Olivia Barton, kicked off the night and made the warehouse stage her own. Emanating a similar sound to artists like Lizzy McAlpine, HAIM, Lucy Dacus, and so on – Barton culminated her own stage presence with her innocently raw lyrics. Her own sound. The crowd volleyed Olivia’s lyrics back to her from the pit and the balconies, and her excitement became a tangible energy. The set flew by, and when it came time for Barton to say her goodbyes, it was bittersweet.

In between Olivia Barton’s opening set and Lizzy’s second show-face in New York City, the crowd hummed in a unified frenzy. The speakers were blasting popular Y2K pop-hits and nostalgic Disney songs by artists like Hannah Montana and Demi Lovato. Friends, couples, fathers and daughters, and solo-fans were conviving to belt the universally appreciated lyrics. Later in Lizzy’s set, she praised Olivia: “She really gets it. Her writing is so human. She’s so special, and I’m so grateful to have her on tour. I listen to her backstage, and I’m in tears!”

    Photograph by Caroline Zeeman

Fifteen past nine o’clock, the lights cut and the bass rose to a body-shaking intensity. The infrastructure of Terminal 5 holds sound so impressively, but the deafening screams echoed riotously. Blue and purple lights slowly expanded their coverage across the stage to reveal a bedroom set-up. Framed posters and window panes clung to the back of the stage. The setting felt familiar, like the space that held so much of one’s life. The love, the heartbreak, the friendships, the sleepovers, the daydreams.

After a lengthy instrumental introduction, followed behind her band, Lizzy skipped out onto the stage. Her outfits on tour have been widely complimented, and on Tuesday she did not disappoint. Adorned in a denim corset and casual blue jeans, she stood in pure happiness as she grinned out towards the crowd. “I’m gonna play some songs for you, and it’s going to be great! We’re gonna have a great time!”

As Lizzy progressed through her setlist, she took intentional time to explain the story behind each song. The crowd bent their ears to listen to every detail she shared. “This song is about slurpees!” A roaring applause. “This song is about ignoring red-flags.” Friends grabbed onto their neighbor’s shoulder to shake in emotional duress. The entire show was a story-telling narrative, full of personal details of precious moments of muse.

    Photograph by Caroline Zeeman

Her lyrics were something to hold onto and sit with. Such a fast-paced show left the crowd wanting more time with her music. All of Lizzy’s songs held a cruel casualness to them. I have no choice in the matter // Why would I, it’s only the death of me. It was jarring, quite surreal, to hear such a youthful and kind crowd shouting such intense lyrics. And the funny thing is I would have married you if you had stuck around. Nearby in the crowd, a father watched as his thirteen year old daughter belted the lyrics, clutching her chest as if she’d been wounded.

There is an archetype on the rise in the realm of female artists. Singer/song-writers fanning out under the music industry umbrella of artists like Taylor Swift are leaning into the superpower that is vulnerability. Honesty is celebratory, and young women are writing about having their hearts ripped out, leaving their hometown, stepping into their strength, growing up, and existing as more than empathetic vessels but as a beacon of feminine independence. Barton and McAlpine have branded their names into this visionary artist-type. The influence the music produced by these experimental and brave artists has is unignorable and unifying.

    Photograph by Caroline Zeeman

Half way through the set, the Terminal 5 stage setting changed from day to night, and the New York City sun casting through the windows on stage, turning to raindrops streaking down the panes. The familiar chords of Lizzy’s hit “Ceilings” strummed across the venue, and something shifted. The collective crowd voice overpowered Lizzy’s as she sang the notorious lyrics. Fans jumped and wept and sang with their hearts. Tears streamed into wide smiles, as the live performance of “Ceilings” seemed to change lives.

Terminal 5 was blessed with Lizzy’s generosity, for she played two unreleased songs for the Manhattan crowd. The first song was titled “Broken Glass,” which Lizzy explained was about only ever being able to see someone when they’re at the bar. The other song was “I Guess.” Lizzy informed the crowd, “this one is one of my favorites!” While the unreleased songs were showcased, it was the only moment the crowd was silent. The audience wanted to hear every lyric, every note-change, every melody.

The rest of the show rolled out with the same energy. The crowd savored every moment they shared with Lizzy, and when it came time to part, fans had a difficult time leaving. Hands waved goodbye from the packed balconies, and cheers overpowered Lizzy’s own departure. Manhattan  seemed to have an impact on her as she left the stage. It was the end of the “The End of The Movie” show in New York City.

With a tireless work ethic and an unwavering commitment to his craft, Timmy Trumpet is a true superstar in the world of EDM, constantly pushing the boundaries and delivering electrifying performances that leave audiences in awe.

During Timmy’s set, he climbed the stage and started boxing the air, doing pushups, and cheering as he downed shots of tequila on stage and set off gas canisters. Timmy pulled out all the stops, taking off his shirt, spraying champagne, handing out glasses and hats, throwing out “100 dollar” bills, and even humping a giant inflatable trumpet. He celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with Irish dancing and dumped an entire bottle of tequila on stage. Timmy also sang Happy Birthday to a fellow Aussie and held his trumpet high as a trophy or a guitar, cementing his place as a true showman and a legend of the EDM world.

Steve Aoki’s set was a visual and auditory feast for the senses. The videos playing in the background, featuring music videos and lyrics, added an extra dimension to the music. Images of funky aliens with vibrant colors and bored ape NFTs on blimps further enhanced the experience. A hyped-up entourage backed Steve up around the DJ booth, as he played fan-favorite “Hungry Heart” featuring Hayley Kiyoko and a new track set to release next month. The visuals during “My Heart Will Go On” were unforgettable, as Jack and Rose were replaced by Steve himself. He even took off his shirt and threw it into the crowd, followed by more champagne and his infamous cake-throwing tradition. Fans went wild as they caught CDs of his most recent album and fought to become bigger targets for the cake-throwing. Steve even filmed the crowd going crazy during a new song, turning it into a music video. The concert ended with a shower of streamers and confetti, and fans throwing phones onto the stage in excitement. Steve Aoki’s performance was truly a party that nobody wanted to leave.
