  • Billie Eilish and Kate McKinnon Bring Holiday Cheer to SNL

After having a successful year in the movie Barbie as the “weird Barbie,” former SNL cast member Kate McKinnon hosts this year’s holiday episode, with pop icon Billie Eilish as the musical guest.

    Kate McKinnon Billie Eilish SNL

In true SNL fashion, the cold open focused on an award show called the Christmas Awards, just in time for the holiday season. No stranger to the cold open, Bowen Yang and Heidi Gardner take the role of the award hosts for the evening. The sketch brought the cast together poking fun at Christmas stereotypes, with the bad gift giver that is grandma, and the one relative who brings COVID to the party.

    https://youtu.be/mjHV7uAq5fU

Kate McKinnon’s monologue saw her joking about being back at her “old job” at SNL, taking the seat as host tonight, and how uncomfortable she is being herself instead of the weird girl standing next to the hot person. She brought out the piano for a cheery tune, creating a parody of “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” stating she was forced to sing. Iconic actors Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig made an appearance, singing the monologue away.

    https://youtu.be/xZmFyCTNrPs?si=WFHCksdjqCieZKUS

The next sketch took place at the North Pole, with elves as news anchors, set on the scene of a killer whale attack. Featuring Kate McKinnon as a scared Scot, it showcases how people always take to social media to write thoughts and prayers during a crisis in a silly yet real manner. Making fun of the fact that kids always want dogs for Christmas, SNL created a satirical infomercial with Pongo!, the perfect pet that doesn’t do anything or dies.

No one will ever forget about the iconic group ABBA, and returning to the screen are Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig, with Kate McKinnon and Bowen Yang performing as the group, not missing a chance to do their best Swedish accent impression. Taking their greatest hits, the ABBA parody group remixed their hits, adding Christmas themes. The sketch was full of the cast breaking character, making it even more funny.

Kate McKinnon brings back her singing with Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig again, creating a country tune about Tampon Farm, a fictional place where women grow and harvest tampons. No one could have seen that twist coming, with the audience erupting into a fit of laughter.

Billie Eilish needs no introduction, the pop icon had a successful year with just one song officially announced, “What Was I Made For?” on the Barbie soundtrack. With several GRAMMY nominations at this year’s award ceremony, and even a Golden Globe nomination for her small role in SWARM, Eilish is just getting started. Just the other night on The Tonight Show, she teased she is working on her next album, with more TBA soon.

Introducing her were McKinnon and in a surprising twist, Greta Gerwig, the director of Barbie. Billie Eilish sang her hit “What Was I Made For,” with her signature breathy vocals, singing on a stool with her brother Finneas playing piano. With a beautifully added string section and accompanying videos of “girlhood” in the background, the song could bring a tear to anybody’s eye and certainly did mine.

    https://youtu.be/mkqTsLVHwuQ

The Weekend Update tradition of Michael Che and Colin Jost reading each other’s jokes did not disappoint this year. Each joke was raunchier than the last, leaving most with their jaws hanging wide open.

Billie Eilish ended her SNL appearance with a haunting cover of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” showcasing her soulful and powerful vocals. During the last sketch, she joined McKinnon cosplaying as crazy cat ladies, showing off several cats.

Just announced on Jan. 20 is Euphoria and Priscilla actor Jacob Elordi hosting, with musical guest Reneé Rapp.

  • GRAMMY-nominated band boygenius Rocks SNL, Timothée Chalamet Returns

Timothée Chalamet hosted Saturday Night Live for the second time, his first in 2020. Soon he is starring as Willy Wonka in Wonka, a role he can finally promote now that the Writer’s Strike has ended. Rock band boygenius was the musical guest for the night, rocking the Studio 8H stage, celebrating their six GRAMMY nominations.

The cold open featured a spoof on the 2024 Republican Presidential Debate, with Kenan Thompson as Lester Holt. James Austin Johnson reprised his iconic role of Donald Trump, making comments on the former President’s recent arrests and breaking the fourth wall, introducing the actors playing the different politicians.

Timothée Chalamet’s monologue referenced the Writer’s Strike, set to the tone of the Willy Wonka song, his new film coming out December 15. Singing along to the tune, Chalamet pokes fun at long films and AI, bringing out SNL actor Marcello Hernandez to rap about having a “baby face,” but still being attractive. Kenan Thompson also made an appearance rapping about his baby face not changing since he was in his popular Kenan & Kel sitcom.

Hip Hop just celebrated 50 years, and what better way to celebrate it than a SNL sketch? Bringing in Rick Rubin (James Austin Jones), (Kenan Thompson), and Chalamet as $mokecheddadthaassgetta, a white Soundcloud-type rapper that should definitely not be there. Poking fun at the modern rappers of the day, the sketch Chalamet busting out his best rapping skills, to the distaste of the legends sharing the stage.

Britney Spear’s new memoir has been shaking the earth lately, calling out those around her including Justin Timberlake. SNL adds some humor to this tense situation, bringing in some influential people to read parts of her memoir, including parody versions of John Mulaney, Bill Hader, and even a parody of Chalamet himself.

In a sequel to Chalamet’s old sketch “Tiny Horse,” he brings out his singing abilities in “Giant Horse,” a sound sure to go viral again on TikTok. By the end of the sketch, the horse goes back to its tiny size, bringing everything full circle.

boygenius is comprised of established musicians Phoebe Bridgers, who achieved well-known status with her song “Motion Sickness,” Lucy Dacus, who went viral for her song “Night Shift,” and Julien Baker, an established guitarist and singer with a couple of well-known albums under her belt. Their music has achieved cult status in the indie rock world, releasing their debut album the record only this year. With melodic and infectious tones, boygenius captivates audiences with its depressing and nostalgic vibes and energetic and rowdy live shows.

For their first song, boygenius, dressed in all suits, sang one of their most popular songs “Not Strong Enough,” off of the record. With their intense and melodic harmonies, the group lit up the SNL stage with their high energy and beautiful vocals. Each member took a turn singing, a staple in their music.

    https://youtu.be/5TtD9U2f1gs?si=Y-UWn05QtgoXJACj

Weekend Update with Michael Che and Colin Jost focused on the Presidential election, happening this time next year, and the usual satirical news stories they share. Heidi Gardner made an appearance as the overworked by not working at all coworker, someone all of us have definitely witnessed. The next sketch featured Timothée Chalamet as a humorous vision of Troye Sivan, the Grammy-nominated Internet personality turned popstar, with a shocking and funny twist of boygenius joining him.

boygenius returned with their second song “Satanist,” also off their debut record. Heavier than their last one, with red hues to match the satanic subject matter and Bridgers screaming like she always does, the group left a chaotic impression on the stage. I mean, only they could write a lyric like “Solomon had a point when he wrote Ecclesiastes.”

  • Foo Fighters Play Heartfelt, Star-Studded Set on Saturday Night Live

Foo Fighters played an emotional performance on Saturday Night Live (SNL), alongside host Nate Bergatze and surprise guests H.E.R. and Christopher Walken. The appearance was their first SNL showing since the tragic death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in March of 2022.

    Foo Fighters Saturday Night Live

The group first played their track “Rescued,” introduced by actor Christopher Walken. Walken recreated his former pronunciation of the band’s name, as a reference to their 2003 pairing on Saturday Night Live where he recited, “Foo FIGHTERS.” The Fighters delivered an electric performance of “Rescued,” complete with vocalist Dave Grohl’s headbanging.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMHEBSnoX4A

Foo Fighters followed up with a performance of “The Glass,” accompanied by special guest H.E.R. The collaborative rendition began with an emotional Dave Grohl, reminding the audience of the band’s great loss of Taylor Hawkins last year. The emotion was not to the performance’s detriment, as H.E.R lended stunning vocals and guitar alongside Grohl.

Foo Fighters are set to embark on tour next month, with shows across Australia, the UK, and more. Their North American tour next summer includes two can’t-miss dates at NYC’s Citi Field on July 17 and 19. Tickets are still available for both July 17 and 19.

  • Ice Spice and Pete Davidson Welcome Back Saturday Night Live

The first episode of Saturday Night Live‘s 49th season aired on October 14, with former cast member Pete Davidson hosting, joined by musical guest and Bronx native, Ice Spice. The show had been on hold due to the recently ended Writers Guild of America strike.

pete davidson saturday night live ice spice

Opening the show with an uncharacteristically serious message, Davidson discussed the events in Israel and Gaza, comparing the recent terrorist attacks to those of 9/11, when Davidson’s father Scott, a firefighter, was killed in the tragic events of that day. It was comedy – Eddie Murphy’s Delirious – that helped Pete deal with the childhood trauma he endured, and with saying that, Davidson shared he would try to be funny this evening.

And try he did, with a few fresh sketches – Wired Autocomplete Interview, Beach Day and Secretary – plus topical sketches including FOX NFL Sunday pregame coverage, where the hosts cannot stop talking about Taylor Swift, regardless of her lack of connection to football.

Davidson didn’t appear as Chad or at the Weekend Update desk as he would while a cast member, instead dialing all his energy into “I’m Just Pete,” a parody of “I’m Just Ken” from this summer’s Barbie movie. Self-deprecating to the core, Pete makes light of himself and criticisms of his character in a poignant and hilarious digital short.

Ice Spice served as musical guest for the first time on Saturday Night Live, having gained a following for her unique voice and style of rapping. This past week, the Bronx-native rapper won big at the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards for Best Breakthrough hip-hop artist, and coming up in November, she will open select dates for Doja Cat.

Standing stiffly on the Studio 8H stage, an LED box was created around Ice, with two dancers flanking her with a low LED ceiling and dancefloor, while she sang her hit “In Ha Mood.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4t2SKGjkTE

Ice Spice’s second song this evening was introduced surprisingly by Taylor Swift, with her new song “Pretty Girl” on, with Nigerian singer Rema joining her for a duet.

SNL returns on October 21 with host and musical guest, Bad Bunny.

  • Pete Davidson to host return of Saturday Night Live with Ice Spice as Musical Guest

Former Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson will host the debut of Season 49 on Saturday, October 14, bringing along musical guest Ice Spice for a return to the airwaves.

ice spice saturday night live pete davidson

Davidson, an eight year veteran cast member who departed the show in May 2022, was slated to host the finale of Season 48 this past May, but the episode was scratched due to strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).

The WGA has ended their strike after a tentative agreement on a new contract with Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), while SAG-AFTRA continue their strike.

Due to variety shows such as SNL working under a different contract than scripted television shows, production can begin on the 49th season without issue.

In addition to Pete Davidson being announced as host, Saturday Night Live has added a new cast member, featured player Chloe Troast. She will join current cast members Michael Che, Colin Jost, Bowen Yang, Mikey Day, Andrew Dismukes, Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, Punkie Johnson, Ego Nwodim and Kenan Thompson.

Bad Bunny will serve as both host and musical guest on Saturday, October 21.

  • SNL Goes Latin With Host Ana De Armas and Musical Guest Karol G

Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA award nominee Ana De Armas shocked and stunned viewers with her role as Marilyn Monroe in the biopic Blonde, as well as her other roles, including the critically acclaimed mystery Knives Out. This week she hosted Saturday Night Live with Latin musical guest Karol G.

    Ana De Armas, Karol G

In honor of the warm weather recently, Saturday Night Live’s cold open took place in Central Park with an award show called the “First Warm Day of the Year.” Reporters (Heidi Gardner and Bowen Yang) took turns interviewing various people you’d see throughout the park, from runners, perverts, first-time rollerbladers, disgruntled park employees, and more.

The monologue opened with Ana De Armas showcasing her bilingual skills, swapping from Spanish to English, talking about how she learned to speak English from the TV show Friends, and different acting classes. Armas discussed her Oscar nomination as well as the fact that she is becoming a U.S. citizen in just three weeks. She finished it off by saying how she feels like she made it because she is hosting Saturday Night Live.

The second sketch, “Matt Schatt Game Show” featured Kenan Thompson as the game show host, with Ana De Armas playing an attractive wife, married to a nerdy, unattractive man with a humourous amount of nipples, played by Mikey Day. Lately, pop culture has been overtaken by the new Barbie movie trailer and SNL references that, utilizing American Girl dolls in a fake movie trailer, bringing the dolls to life.

Other sketches include “Album Recording Session,” about a producer (Devon Walker) trying to record his producer tag, starring Armas and Ego Nwodim as the girls recording it, messing up and joking about his car, his ability to get women, and more. Following that is a sketch about a Spanish class, with musical guest Karol G making an appearance towards the end, singing the Spanish alphabet. The “Please Don’t Destroy” sketch spoke about a bad night out, where they cannot remember what happened, suffering hangxiety.

Colombian singer/songwriter Karol G, described as a reggaeton and Latin trap artist, experiments with different genres throughout her music. She has amassed over 50 million monthly Spotify listeners and has over one billion streams. Her first song of the night “MIENTRAS ME CURO DEL CORA” off of her critically acclaimed record Mañana Será Bonito featured background singers humming the tune to “Don’t Worry Be Happy,” the tempo which is sampled in the track. Everyone was dressed in brown and beige, with a satin curtain background, dancing to the different beat changes the song includes, making the listener want to get up and groove. The vibes are happier on the song as Karol G sings in Spanish, catering to native and non-native speakers alike with her infectious energy and overall good mood.

    https://youtu.be/_Q8b-dzZ9gA

Weekend Update rammed in on the Trump arrest and various politicians, from Supreme Court Justices to those voting against a women’s right to choose. Guests include Kenan Thompson as Funky Kong, talking about getting cut from the new Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Sarah Sherman as Genesis Fry, a meditation guru attempting to make Colin Jost become intuitive while making fun of his ego and soft arms. SNL makes it a point to introduce the first nonbinary cast member Molly Kearney as who they are, not a character. Kearney spoke about trans rights, which are a topic of discussion amongst lawmakers, trying to limit their rights, but Kearney makes it a point to discuss how important their rights are, and that we need to protect trans youth.

The final sketches included Armas and others in “Enter Stage Woof: Acting School for Dogs,” featuring actual dogs on the SNL stage, and Bowen Yang, holder of the Guinness Book World Record for the longest nails, with his wife, played by Armas. The sketch takes a shocking turn as Yang cuts his fingernails off, saving their relationship. Karol G performed her last song “TUS GAFTAS” with a completely different vibe change, suddenly in a spiky black outfit laying against a black car, with an all-female backing band, also in all black. The song is heavier than the last, with melodic guitars and a fast drum beat, showing her versatility. She wows the crowd with her stage presence, moving all around as she sings, not stopping the swaying of her hips even when the song stops.

Pete Davidson will make his Saturday Night Live return on May 6 with musical guest Lil Uzi Vert.

  • Molly Shannon brings back Classic Characters and Jonas Brothers perform “Waffle House” on SNL

The Easter weekend episode of Saturday Night Live (SNL) featured longtime cast member Molly Shannon, alongside musical guests Jonas Brothers.

The cold open featured James Austin Johnson as indicted former President Trump, interrupting The Last Supper to compare himself to Jesus, and pointing out where he would have done better.

Molly Shannon, who has been on a roll with The White Lotus and I Love That for You, in addition to her biography Hello, Molly! available in paperback starting April 11, opened the show with a song alongside featured players.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbmPn4AeN0E&list=PLS_gQd8UB-hJ8b9mglvIB7Uhi1qS1Cuso&index=2&t=12s

If you were looking for references to classic Shannon characters, you were in luck. Jeannie ‘Don’t get me Started’ Darcy was featured in her own “Selective Startage” Netflix special, bringing back the super dry humor.

Please Don’t Destroy played Molly 2K23, a video game series based on Shannon’s life, and hidden within the only Mary Catherine Gallagher reference of the night.

Nick Jonas joined the 5-timers club this week, having hosted and performed sans brothers, both of whom have played Studio 8H three times. Nick would stop by during “The Play” and the trio would appear in the final skit of the night, featuring Sally O’Malley, who can kick, stretch and kick.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9fIWHJGsE8&list=PLS_gQd8UB-hJ8b9mglvIB7Uhi1qS1Cuso&index=10&pp=iAQB

The latest single from Jonas Brothers, “Waffle House” – featured a dozen backup singers plus a five-piece band for the pure pop tune that is no doubt catchy.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IS-2ZPDFDH4&list=PLS_gQd8UB-hJ8b9mglvIB7Uhi1qS1Cuso&index=15

The second song had a far more animated use of the performance space, with “Walls” had backup singers getting enthuasiastically down, a surprise banger to close the night.

SNL returns next week with host Ana de Armas and musical guest Karol G.

  • Che Pranks Jost, Quinta Praises Teachers and Lil Yachty gets Psychedelic on SNL

Emmy-winning Abbott Elementary star Quinta Brunson hosted Saturday Night Live (SNL) this week, with genre-blending musical guest Lil Yachty. Brunson used her monologue to talk Abbott Elementary and praised teachers, mentioning her Philadelphia upbringing and mother who was an educator. Brunson used her first SNL hosting gig to call for better pay for teachers, reminding parents to not take teachers for granted.

A trio of solid sketches followed, with a “Drug Dealer” sketch with bathroom dealers trying to one-up each other, a Netflix Bridesmaids cult documentary that sends up the cult doc Wild Wild Country, and a gameshow ‘Couple Goals.’

The first song from Lil Yachty, “The BLACK seminole.,” found an all-female band in a starlit field/swamp, the moon backlighting them. The first track off Let’s Start Here, “The BLACK seminole.” offered rap merging with psychedelic rock and hip hop, including autotuned Yachty singing, the guitarist dropping a solo that would make Slash smile, and singer Diana Gordon taking the spotlight as LED wall projections intensified. Lil Yachty put the band front and center, with a Pink Floyd influence clear in Gordon’s singing and samples of “One of these Days” and “Speak to Me.”

    https://youtu.be/XYdE4HAsXpI

On Weekend Update, Michael Che pulled “the meanest thing you’ve ever done” on Colin Jost, by getting the audience to not laugh during the first few jokes Colin told. Someone could then be heard shouting ‘you suck’, and Jost breaking his ever-stiff persona on Update, laughing at the lack of laughs, wondering if his mic was on, and Che admitting it was his April Fools. Jost replied with “You are evil!” laughing all the while, sweating too. Meanwhile, Che’s couple of early jokes got big laughs to stoke the flame.

Having set the tone for the rest of Update, the guests that joined the desk made this the funniest Update of the season so far. Michaelangelo’s David (Michael Longfellow) and featured player Marcelo Hernandez praised Short Kings, dragging Jost again, this time for being short (he’s really 6’0″).

Lil Yachty’s second song “drive ME crazy!” dropped a Disco beat thanks to an even-handed drummer and Diana Gordon taking the lead this time, singing about finding her perfect match. At first, the song is minimalist, with the stage becoming lighter as the song progressed, with Yachty joining in, wearing a hat that Shock G would have loved.

Tune into Saturday Night Live next week with host Molly Shannon and musical guest Jonas Brothers

  • Travis Kelce hosts Saturday Night Live with Musical Guest Kelsea Ballerini

Athletes have a long history of being great hosts on Saturday Night Live, and two-time Super Bowl champion Travis Kelce added his name to the list when he hosted this week’s episode, with musical guest Kelsea Ballerini.

    travis kelce kelsea ballerini

Following a Fox News Morning Show spoof as the cold open, Kelce presented himself on stage, fitting in naturally from the start. With his mom, dad and brother Jason (a Center for the Philadelphia Eagles) sitting in the front row, he poked fun at himself and his reality show Catching Kelce, as well as the awkwardness in beating your brother in the Super Bowl.

After Travis Kelce showed his range in “American Girl Diner” and “Mama’s Funeral,” Kelce played it straight (literally) to Bowen Yang in “Straight Male Friend,” an instant classic of commercial parodies, this one doubling as a medication ad.

For Kelsea Ballerini’s first performance, the pop singer performed “Blindsided,” from Rolling Up the Welcome Mat, released on Valentines Day 2023. With a six-piece band backing Ballerini with three off to each side of her, the singer, clad in a skin tight black outfit with a silhouetted dancer mirroring her performance behind a changing blue and white screen.

During the song, the recent divorcee added in a jab at ex Morgan Evans, adding in a new line that referenced Evans’ new breakup single “Over for You.” As “Blindsided” ended, Ballerini sang, “Now you’re singin’ it loud on the radio like you’re the only heart that breaks / You would’ve searched the whole world over? Yeah, sure, OK.” Overall, an assertive and impressive performance by Ballerini.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHcPOULdO-s&list=PLS_gQd8UB-hKvb96LwUXHBeIlHyxIeY1N&index=8

For Ballerini’s second song of the night, she performed in a white floor-length gown with only a pianist on stage for a rendition of “Penthouse,” also off Rolling Up the Welcome Mat. Ballerini sang, “Kissed someone new last night / But now I don’t know where you’re sleeping, baby / We got along real nice, until I wanted out, now I know you hate me.”

Jack White joins only 10 other musicians who have performed on Saturday Night Live 5 or more times, including Foo Fighters, Miley Cyrus, Arcade Fire, Randy Newman, Beck, Maroon 5, Kanye West, Eminem, Rihanna and Coldplay.

White and his band – Dominic Davis (bass), Daru Jones (drums), and Quincy McCrary (keyboards) – performed a towering medly of “Taking me Back” and “Fear of Dawn,” two tracks that notably are the opening tracks from his 2022 solo album, Fear of the Dawn.

Later in the show, Jack White performed “A Tip From You to Me” from his other 2022 solo album, Entering Heaven Alive.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHp_h7RLfAU

The last time Jack White performed on Saturday Night Live, he filled in for Morgan Wallen, and gave a subtle nod to Eddie Van Halen during “Lazaretto.” White used a model of guitar similar to Van Halen’s, and played a finger tapping solo mid-song, a signature move of Van Halen’s. Watch below.

Saturday Night Live returns on March 4th with host Travis Kelce and musical guest Kelsea Ballerini.
