  • Romi O Releases Punk/Aesthetic Single “M2M” 

    Brooklyn’s Romi O has just released her second ever single “M2M” on Friday, March 24th, a ballad you won’t want to miss. The single is brilliant, having a truly one-of-a-kind musical journey feel to it; retaining more immediate elements from punk and alternative music.  

    Understanding the flow of “M2M” requires a bit of a backstory about the artist. This is the second single from her upcoming debut album, which is expected to be released later in 2023. Hailing from Tel Aviv, Israel, Romi O has been making music ever since she can remember. She continued to develop her songwriting chips, eventually switching from singing and writing in Hebrew to performing in English.

    Romi O’s sound is unique because of the juxtaposition of understated textures, relatable lyrics, and hard-hitting grooves. By the time she turned 22, the artist had relocated to Brooklyn, where she had sought a fresh start in music. She co-founded the band “PowerSnap” to pursue high-octane punk and garage aesthetics.  

    Eventually, Romi O circled back to her initial fondness for ballads. The resulting sound she made is truly one-of-a-kind, still retaining more immediate elements from punk and alternative music. But this time, in “M2M,” she comes to light in a soothing, softer way that makes her sound more intriguing and dynamic. 

    Her chosen stage name comes from the beloved figure of “Romeo,” from Shakespeare’s timeless “Romeo and Juliette” play. Being a huge fan of Shakespeare herself, Rome O felt a truly special connection to the character.

    The single stands out as an example of her art and musical craft. The song deals with the idea of always being ready to question life choices and decisions and approaching everything without the fear of taking things too seriously. It’s important to find a balance, and the song is a very poignant observation of the fleeting nature of the path we carve for ourselves in life with our choices.

    The song’s music video feels like another layer. In a way, it is another approach to telling the story, and it offers a visual representation of the core concept that drives this release. Overall, it features some punchy electronic sounds, as well as organic elements such as vocals and guitars to round up the wide palette of sonic colors on this song.

  • Tears for Fears Summer Tour includes shows at MSG, SPAC and Bethel Woods

    Tears for Fears are going on the road this summer for a 2023 North American tour, which includes stops at three music venues in New York. The iconic band will perform at Madison Square Garden (MSG) on June 26, then make their way over to Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) on July 2, followed by their last New York performance at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts on July 5.

    The performances support Tears for Fears’ The Tipping Point Tour Part II, and they will be joined by special guest Cold War Kids.

    Tears for Fears, originating in Bath, Somerset, England, composes music by musicians Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal, and former members include Manny Elias and Ian Stanley. The band’s career spans over 40 years, with their first album, The Hurting, debuting in 1983, supported by their first single “Suffer the Hurting.” They have since released seven studio albums, most recently The Tipping Point in 2022, their first album since 2004’s Everybody Loves a Happy Ending. Their debut album birthed the hit “Mad World”, the band’s first international success, inspiring several cover versions, most recently by Demi Lovato on the singer’s 2021 album Dancing with the Devil… the Art of Starting Over. Tears for Fears has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide and performed on countless sold-out shows.

    Tickets for the Tears for Fears 2023 summer tour, which includes performances at three new york venues – Madison Square Garden (June 26), Saratoga Performing Arts Center (July 2), and Bethel Woods Center for the Arts (July 5) are available with artist presale as of April 4 at 10 a.m. and continues until April 6 at 10 p.m., and general on-sale begins April 7 at 10 a.m.

  • Pixies will be Joined by Modest Mouse on the Third Leg of their North American Tour

    Indie rock kingpins Pixies will be joined by Modest Mouse for the third leg of their North American tour, which includes performances at three New York venues. The bands will perform twice at The Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City on Aug. 21 and 22, the Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown on Aug. 25, and the Artpark Amphitheater in Lewiston on Aug. 28. The upcoming tour is in support of Pixie’s latest studio album, Doggerel.

    Pixies originated in Boston, Massatuchetts, and consists of David Lovering, (drums, percussion, backing vocals) Black Francis, (lead and backing vocals, rhythm guitar, acoustic guitar) Paz Lenchantin, (bass, violin, backing and lead vocals), and Joey Santiago (lead guitar, backing vocals.) They have been performing for over 30 years, and their debut album, Surfer Rosa, was released in 1988, supported by their lead single “Gigantic.” Over the course of their career, they have released a total of eight studio albums, most recently 2022’s Doggerel, which their upcoming tour supports. The band disbanded in 1993, and reunited in 2004, with their first release since reuniting being 2014’s Indie Cindy, their fifth studio album. They are known for being “one-of-a-kind” performers, due to their concerts having no pre-determined set lists, and whatever song plays next is what “feels right.”

    New Musical Express (NME) called Doggerel “the most inventive since their reunion nearly two decades ago.”

    Tickets to see the Pixies perform with Modest Mouse on their North American tour, and all other venues, go on sale Friday, March 31 at 10 a.m.

  • Justin Meyer Releases Single “Friends With Fear” 

    Brooklyn-based artist, producer, and engineer Justin Meyer has just released his newest single “Friends With Fear,” out Friday, March 24th. Inspired by Justin’s journey of graduating during the pandemic, the single puts a positive spin on uncertainty and the shared experience of having a quarter-life crisis.

    Written in 2022, “Friends With Fear” explores the experience of having a quarter-life crisis while confronting the unique challenges of graduating during a pandemic. The upbeat track fuses thought-provoking lyrics with Lily Kelso’s background vocals and Alden Spence’s electric guitar layers to create an undeniably hypnotic sound.  

    Sharing more behind the song’s inspiration, Justin Meyer explains, “‘Friends With Fear’ is about having a quarter-life crisis and trying to be okay with life’s unknowns. I went through college during the pandemic and graduated a year early, leaving me feeling this sense of time slipping away very quickly. I got super focused on the impermanence of life for about a year. This song is about making friends with those feelings and letting them settle instead of fighting them and making them even worse. Furthermore, it’s about reclaiming the joy of being alive.” 

    Hailing from Golden, Colorado, Justin Meyer has had a lifelong passion for music. In 2019, he followed his dream and moved across the country to pursue his Music Production and Engineering degree at the renowned Berklee College of Music.

    After graduating in 2021, he moved to Brooklyn, New York, and secured a position as an assistant engineer at the prestigious Kensaltown East studio. With his latest single, “Friends With Fear,” Justin continues to demonstrate his exceptional production and songwriting prowess.

    Prior to his studies at Berklee, Justin had already begun to hone his sound with his first two EPs, Afterthought and Dreams. During the 2020 lockdown, Justin kept busy, producing his first album Metanoia released in 2021. His third EP, Lonely Rock Star, was recorded as part of Justin’s capstone project at Berklee and featured instrumentation by fellow Berklee alumni.

  • Ween Announce First US Tour Since 2016, The Rooftop at Pier 17 Show

    It’s time to get Brown once again as rock band Ween announced a US headline tour today, which includes a show at The Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City this September. The band will perform at the venue on Sept. 14, shortly before their tour comes to an end. The last time the band went on tour in the US was in 2016, shortly after their reunion following their 2012 breakup.

    Ween was formed in 1984 in New Hope, Pennsylvania, and consists of Gene and Dean Ween alongside longtime band members Claude Coleman, Jr. (drums), Dave Dreiwitz (bass), and Glenn McClelland (keyboards). The band’s sound combines elements of punk, psychedelic, alternative, country, and more. Their debut studio album, God Weed Satan, was released in late 1990 and since then, the band has released a total of nine studio albums. Ween’s most recent studio album, La Cucaracha, was released in 2007.

    Ween’s headline tour comes after their already-announced series of live performances this April. The band is set to perform in Dallas on April 25, Houston on April 26, and New Orleans from April 28-29. Additionally, they will return to their home state of Pennsylvania for the Peach Music Festival from June 29-July 2. Furthermore, Ween has launched a new web store. Fans can find a variety of merchandise, including a web store exclusive variant on the gold foil of Todd Slater’s Las Vegas poster from this past weekend’s shows.

  • Camp Bedford Share Femme-Pop Single “Jupiter” 

    Brooklyn based folk-pop trio Camp Bedford have just shared the second single from their upcoming debut EP So Often & So Sweet titled “Jupiter.” With Roxanne Quilty on guitar and vocals, Mariela Flor Olivo on lead rhythm guitar and vocals, and Tallen Gabriel helming the cello, this anticipated album comes out on March 31st.

    The queer and femme-led band’s deep friendship shines through in their music. At once witchy, nostalgic, and magical, “Jupiter” and “2 AM,” which were released in February to warm reviews, both capture Camp Bedford’s sonic essence beautifully. Thus, these two releases are setting the stage for what’s soon to come from the band.

    Of their newest single, Camp Bedford wrote, “‘Jupiter’ is about recognizing the parts of yourself that no longer serve you and setting them on fire. Written like a spell or incantation, this track’s ethereal elements and driving energy capture the experience of surrendering to your own power.”

    When talking about their follow-up single “2AM,” the band wrote, “A rousing angsty anthem, ‘2AM’ captures the post-breakup frustration and anger of watching your former partner give someone else the time and energy you wished they would have been able to give you. Even if it’s not logical and both parties grow and expand into new versions of themselves after a breakup, we wanted to honor the gnawing hurt that comes in initially watching an ex be ‘better’ to someone else than they were to you.” 

    By melding their unique voices and styles of instrumentation, Camp Bedford is a folk-pop-rock band spinning tales of adventure, self-discovery, and overall, their life’s journeys. They are nostalgic forward-thinkers, for instance, Camp Bedford’s music is infused with the magic of possibility. Compared to the likes of Joseph, First Aid Kit, and Wye Oak, the group finds inspiration in poetry, nature, and musical genres ranging from bluegrass to hyper pop.

  • Garden of Dreams Returns to Radio City Music Hall this Spring

    The Garden of Dreams Foundation, along with Madison Square Garden Entertainment have announced the 15th annual Garden of Dreams Talent Show, scheduled to take place at Radio City Music Hall on Wednesday, April 19, at 7:00 p.m.

    More than 150 young people from the tri-state area will take the stage to showcase their talents. Additionally, this year’s festival will feature vocal performances of both original and beloved songs.

    This year’s Garden of Dreams talent show at Radio City will welcome 22 acts made up of young people from 22 of the Foundation’s 29 partner organizations, including Make-a-Wish, Children’s Aid, Children’s Village, Covenant House, Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Hackensack University Medical Center, SCAN-Harbor, and more. Since the foundation’s inception in 2006, the Garden of Dreams Foundation has impacted more than 400,000 young people and their families.

    The Foundation focuses on young people facing illness or financial challenges, as well as children of uniformed personnel who have been lost or injured while serving our communities. In addition to the local talent showcased at the talent show, Garden of Dreams has drawn a number of high-profile performers. Whoopi Goldberg, Alicia Keys, Sara Bareilles, Remy Ma, Susan Sarandon, Caleb McLaughlin, A$AP Rocky, Gaten Matarazzo, and more have served as both presenters of the event and mentors to the performers.

    The Garden of Dreams Foundation established the annual Hero Award, recognizing those embodying the spirit of the foundation. The award was most recently awarded to legendary actor and comedian Tracy Morgan. The 2023 Garden of Dreams Talent Show at Radio City Music Hall is free and open to the public, but tickets must be reserved in advance at gardenofdreamsfdtn.org/talentshow2023.

  • Sister Musical Duo Aly & AJ Debut New Album

    Sister pop duo Aly & AJ released their fifth studio album, With Love From, on March 15. The album comes after 2021’s A Touch of the Beat Gets You Up on Your Feet Gets You Out and Then Into the Sun, their first studio album in 14 years. Prior to its release, four singles, “With Love From,” “Baby Lay Your Head Down,” “After Hours,” and “Blue Dress” were released in support.

    Aly & AJ were born in Torrance, California in 1989 and 1991 respectively, and raised in both Southern California and Seattle. Both of their parents, who are now divorced, work in the music industry, their dad is a producer, and their mother is a musician who performed in the Christian rock band, JC Band. The sisters have a history with Disney, with Aly playing a supporting role in the sitcom Phil of the Future from 2004-06, co-starring in the 2005 Disney Channel Orginal Movie Now You See It, and starring with AJ in the network’s 2006 original movie Cow Belles.

    Their debut album, Into the Rush, was released in 2005. The album was heavily supported by Disney, with their cover of “Do You Believe in Magic” appearing in the soundtrack of Now You See It…; the single “No One” appearing in the 2005 Walt Disney Pictures Film Ice Princess; another cover “Walking on Sunshine,” appearing in the soundtrack for the Lindsay Lohan film Herbie: Fully Loaded. The album’s debut track and fifth single overall, “Rush” was featured in Disney’s Twitches, before being released to mainstream radio and becoming their first single to chart the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at 59. Their single, “On the Ride” appeared in the soundtrack for Cow Belles.

    Insomniatic, their third studio album, became their most successful release to date in 2007. The album’s debut single, “Potential Breakup Song” similarly became the duo’s most successful single to date. The sisters took an extended break after the album’s release, marking their return in 2017 with the EP Ten Years. In 2021, they released their first studio album in 14 years, A Touch of the Beat Gets You Up on Your Feet Gets You Out and Then Into the Sun. The album didn’t reach the same success as their previous work, but it was supported by a single, “Slow Dancing.”

    With Love From marks a minor departure from Aly & AJ’s previous work, something they started doing with their prior album. Highlights from the album include the title track, “With Love From,” and “After Hours.” While their early work encompassed upbeat dance music you were likely to hear at a party in the late 2000s, their newer music is a slower-paced, soft-pop sound. The change feels natural, reflecting the growth they’ve had over the years of their career. Aly & AJ are ready to introduce their new sound to a live audience, headlining a tour this spring that will have a stop at the Hammerstein Ballroom on April 22.

  • The 12th Annual Blue Note Jazz Fest Sets New York City Dates

    The 12th annual Blue Note Jazz Fest is scheduled to run for the month of June, and then some, across seven locations in New York City this summer.

    The festival begins on May 31 and continues until July 2. Venues for this year’s Blue Note Jazz Festival include the Beacon Theatre, Sony Hall, Town Hall, SummerStage in Central Park, Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell, and the Blue Note Jazz Club itself in Greenwich Village.

    A number of artists are scheduled to perform at the Festival including Grace Jones, Pat Metheny, NxWorries, Robert Glasper, BJ The Chicago Kid, Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers, and more. The festival will open at the Hammerstein Ballroom with a performance by the great Grace Jones. While Jazz music is an inspiration behind the festival, the Blue Note continues to broaden its offerings, highlighting all musical styles, backgrounds, and cultures. Additionally, a number of celebrities have made appearances at the Blue Note. Stevie Wonder, Tony Bennett, Quincy Jones, Liza Minelli, Dave Chapelle, and Chris Rock have made appearances, among others.

    Since 1981, the Blue Note Jazz Club has been recognized for its artistic integrity, commitment to showcasing diverse and genre-spanning artists, and a long-running community of music lovers and friends built within its storied walls. The club is committed to preserving the history of Jazz while simultaneously showcasing new talent. In addition to highlighting new talent, the club has been known for iconic appearances from Chick Corea, McCoy Tyler, Joe Lovano, John Scofield, and Chris Botti. In 2011, the Blue Note Jazz Festival brand was established. It has since become the largest Jazz festival in New York City.

  • Flushing Town Hall Celebrates “Octogenarian Women of Jazz” 

    Flushing Town Hall is celebrating Women’s History Month with a special “Octogenarian Women of Jazz” performance. Four octogenarian women will take center stage at Flushing Town Hall on Friday, March 24th, in honor of Women’s History Month. Well past the age of retirement but still very much in their artistic prime, these women prove that great jazz, like great wine, gets better with age. 

    Flushing Town Hall Celebrates “Octogenarian Women of Jazz” 

    Flutist/tenor saxophonist Carol Sudhalter, beloved as Flushing Town Hall’s house band leader, will celebrate her 80th birthday leading a very special quintet of Octogenarians for the occasion. She will be joined in the band by world-renowned pianist Bertha Hope (86), drummer Paula Hampton (87) of the legendary jazz Hampton family, and widely popular vocalist Keisha St. Joan (84).  

    In addition, the concert will feature the rare participation of revered bassist Bill Crow, joining the women on stage at an impressive 95 years of age. Performing well past the typical age of retirement and still very much in their artistic prime. 

    “Looking at movies, books, and general depictions, we are accustomed to thinking of 80 as an ending, as an age when the mind and body begin to decline,” says Carol Sudhalter.” But now that I am 80, I realize that it is just the beginning of a new life and such a rewarding culmination of past years’ work at the same time. I am so excited to share the stage with my fellow Octogenarians to bring a wonderful evening of jazz to the audiences in Queens.” 

    “I have been honored to have Carol lead the house band of our popular Louis Armstrong Legacy Monthly Jazz Jams for several years now and am excited to see her take the stage with this extraordinary ensemble for her big birthday,” says Flushing Town Hall’s Executive and Artistic Director Ellen Kodadek. “Carol’s work is extremely important to Flushing Town Hall and the Queens jazz community — and we are so excited to celebrate her birthday with this special concert.” 

    Flushing Town Hall’s Women of Jazz concert begins at 8:00 PM EST on Friday, March 24th. Tickets are $15/$10 for members, seniors, and students with ID. Tickets can be purchased here.
