  • Rodrigo y Gabriela Announce New Album and International Tour with a Stop at Kings Theatre

Grammy-winning guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela have announced their latest album, In Between Thoughts…A New World, and an international tour in support. The duo’s first album since 2019 is due for release on April 21. Their international tour is scheduled for a performance at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn on June 27.

Rodrigo y Gabriela’s latest album, In Between Thoughts…A New World

Rodrigo y Gabriela self-produced the album in their recording studio in Ixtapa, Mexico. The album’s debut single, “Descending To Nowhere,” is available now and can be heard below. The new album sees Rodrigo y Gabriela explore electronic and orchestral elements, a departure from their previous releases.

Rodrigo y Gabriela’s career spans more than two decades with, including the forthcoming In Between Thoughts…A New World, six studio albums. The duo’s first widely released album, re-Foc, debuted in 2002. Their sixth studio album comes after a period of spiritual awakening for Rodrigo y Gabriela.

While recovering from Covid in the fall of 2020, Rodrigo discovered the concept of non-dualism. According to the study of non-dualism, there is a “single, infinite, and indivisible reality, whose nature is pure consciousness, from which all objects and selves derive their apparently independent existence,”, says author/teacher Rupert Spira. When Rodrigo shared his feelings with Gabriela, she felt a similar epiphany, and they began channeling these feelings in song form. The music just started flowing out, without any real intention. We didn’t change the foundation of the songs from that point, so what you hear on the album is the music as we were creating it.”

In a testament to Rodrigo y Gabriela’s musicality, In Between Thoughts leads the listener through a complex narrative with a plot, emotional arcs, and dramatic tension.

Available exclusively at www.rodgab.com, the band is offering a deluxe version of the album on vinyl. Pre-orders are available now. Tickets for the international tour go on sale this Friday, Feb 17, and can be purchased here.

  • In Focus: Flipturn at Lark Hall

On Friday, February 10th, Flipturn played to a sold out crowd at Lark Hall. The show got off to a good start with band, Hotel Fiction, all the way from Athens, GA.

Vocalist, Dillon Basse of Flipturn at Lark Hall – Photo by Jarron Childs

They received a warm reception from the young crowd as their alternative indie style was pretty on par with the style of Flipturn. They are led by two vocalists, Jade Ireland and Jessica Thompson. After graduating college, they have been touring with a number of bands while also releasing their EP, Enjoy Your Stay, just ahead of this tour.

Ireland mentioned that they faced some animosity on the road and it was nice to actually feel welcomed at a show. It could be seen by the way the band interacted with each other how comfortable they felt on stage. Thompson even coming off the stage at points with guitarist, Aaron Daugherty, to either play guitar solos or encourage a sing-a-long from the audience. They played a strong 40 minute set including “Monster” from their recently released EP.

Coming out of Jacksonville, FL, Flipturn has grown a big following since playing in bassist, Madeline Jarman’s, garage in 2015. From playing to maybe 5 people at a local Albany bar, to selling out Lark Hall; they have been catching the attention of young fans at an exponential rate. They released their latest album, Shadowglow, last August and have been on their Shadowglow tour since late August.

They played a pretty long hour and a half set comprised of music from both their albums. The mic went on of the second song of the set, but the fans did not hesitate to sing every word to “The Disco.” Only joy could be felt in that room as fans jumped, cheered, and screamed for the majority of their performance.

At one point the drummer took apart his snare and cymbal and asked a few fans to hold them to be played on. The chemistry both on stage and with the crowd was quite strong for this rock band of young adults. The end of their set fell kind of flat, which left the crowd very unsettled. Demands for an encore were answered with a 2-song encore including on of their hits from their freshman album, “August.”

Fans left quite happy to hear some of their favorite songs from Flipturn. As their tour continues, you can catch them again at Govball in Queens on Saturday June 10th.

Hotel Fiction Set List: Think Twice, Astronaut Kids, FU Jess, Allure, Instead of Us, Out of My Head, Athens, Monster

Flipturn Set List: The Fall, Sad Disco, Chicago, Playground, Whales, Six Below, In Consideration, Halfway, Everybody Wants to Rule the World, Hollow, Brooklyn Baby, Burn/Weepy Woman, Goddamn, Space Cowboy
    Encore: August, Nickel

  • Robert Walter Releases “White Lines” from Aquarium Drunkard Session (Vol. 3)

Robert Walter interprets infamous soul and jazz artists on his third session for the music journal, Aquarium Drunkard. The EP’s opening track, a reimagination of Melle Mel’s “White Lines,” which itself was a reinvention of Liquid Liquid’s track “Cavern,” has just released on February 17th

    Robert Walter White Lines

A founding member of The Greyboy Allstars, Walter splits his time between The Greyboy Allstars, his own 20th Congress, playing organ and keys in Mike Gordon Band and on tour with Roger Waters, in addition to a robust film soundtrack career in Los Angeles.

“These tracks were all recorded for Aquarium Drunkard’s Lagniappe series. This was my 3rd installment,” explains Walter. “I always try to find some interesting tunes that have inspired me in some way over the years. It’s also a fun challenge to record the music all by myself. I played all the instruments here and arranged, recorded and mixed at home.”

Robert Walter said of the session, “I have always loved ‘White Lines (Don’t Do It).’ I remember hearing this when I was first discovering rap music as a kid. I learned later that the music is based on Liquid Liquid’s ‘Cavern.’ I love how the interactions between the NYC art scene, punk rock, and emerging hip-hop were happening so naturally and quickly during the late ’70s,” continued Walter. “This tune manages to be a message song, embrace some avant-garde musical ideas and still work as dance music even to this day. I have been playing it off and on in bands my entire life. I started doing it a lot as an organ vehicle during late night Jazzfest gigs as a comment on the wild party atmosphere. This version references both the original Liquid Liquid track and the brilliant Melle Mel interpolation.”

The keyboardist, who co-founded The Greyboy Allstars and is currently on tour as a member of Roger Waters’ band, plays all of the instruments. Some of the artists being featured on Aquarium Drunkard are Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel, Liquid Liquid, Jackie Mittoo, Eddie Harris, Rammellzee & K-Rob and Les Baxter & Martin Denny.

  • E.R.I.E. Share New Indie Single “World is on Fire” off upcoming “Suburban Mayhem” album

Capital Region indie-rock quartet E.R.I.E. have announced their new full-length record, Suburban Mayhem, arriving April 7th. Alongside the announcement, the band has shared the evocative new single “World is On Fire.” featuring friend Sydney Worthley from their local scene.

E.R.I.E. Shares New Indie Single “World is on Fire”

Vocalist/guitarist TJ Foster says, “Having Sydney lend her talents to this track was simply incredible. The embellishments she added really took the song to the next level, and we’re so honored to call her a friend. The song itself is about watching ourselves slowly destroy our planet and ruminating on how much more we all could be doing just on a small scale. But at the end of the day, it’s sadly just so much easier to change nothing and assume someone else will swoop in and fix our problems instead.”

E.R.I.E. consists of guitarist Matt Delgado, drummer Chad Flewwelling and bassist Levi Jennes. The band spent most of 2022 self-recording their sophomore full-length, yielding 12 nostalgia-tinged songs in the distinct style that the band affectionately describes as Tom Petty cosplaying as blink-182. The band’s sound has a “crunching guitars, catchy choruses and a down-to-earth, working-class vibe that recalls modern heartland punk rock…” (Daily Gazette).

E.R.I.E. Shares New Indie Single “World is on Fire”

The lead single “Can’t Stop Runnin’’ showcases the band exploring these more Springsteen-esque elements perfectly, whereas album highlight ‘Bad Man’s World’ is a pop-rock anthem tailormade for dominating the airwaves.

All the while, the band has solidified themselves as one of the most reliable and entertaining live acts in the greater Albany music scene. Combined with the consistently strong Suburban Mayhem has E.R.I.E. poised to quickly become a suburban success story.

Sydney Worthley is a singer-songwriter at heart, pulling inspiration from Phoebe Bridgers and Taylor Swift. At the age of 17, she released “Rose Colored Glasses” amongst an unforeseen pandemic. Coming of age, long lost connections, and learning from past haunting mistakes are all themes of her 2020 project. Vito Ciccarelli, WVCR radio personality said she’s an “Amazing talent, wonderful songwriter, and an engaging young lady. Having worked with many young acts over the years, I see her achieving great things in the future.”

    Upcoming Tour Dates:

Feb 16 – New York, NY @ The Delancey

Feb 17 – Shelton, CT @ Black Barrel Records

Mar 18 – Albany, NY @ Lark Hall

  • Pete Beat Takes Fans to ‘Another Galaxy’

English musician Pete Beat is opening up to fans about his mental health struggles with his new single “Another Galaxy.” The single is in support of his upcoming fourth album, The Strange Museum, due for release this April. The Strange Museum explores his involuntary stay in a psychiatric hospital, during which he was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Pete Beat can be argued as the “lost member” of The Beatles, having been dismissed from the group before they achieved mainstream success. Since then, Pete has focused on his solo career. He has written and recorded 500 songs over the last 13 years, including “Another Galaxy.”

Pete’s newest single can be rather deceptive, as it starts with an upbeat tune. It’s not entirely clear to listeners that they are about to learn about some of the singer’s deepest struggles and emotions. For a debut track, it works perfectly. The Strange Museum details Pete’s journey with his mental health, so it’s natural that the opening track starts out calm and upbeat. Throughout the album, listeners will get a closer glimpse of the dark place Pete was once in, and how he came out of it.

“Another Galaxy” is more than just a matter of being a good or bad song. Whether Pete’s work is the type of music you’re into is subjective. No one can argue against how much courage it took for Pete to talk about his personal struggles so openly. Pete hopes his album will reduce the stigma surrounding schizophrenia, and show fans that the disease doesn’t have to talk over your life. In Pete’s case, he has been symptom-free since 2010, with the help of medication.

Of the stigma, Pete says “this adds more of a reason to do it, and the time seems right, and I feel happy and confident in my life, so I’m going to talk about it.”

“Another Galaxy” from Pete Beat is out now. available for purchase now. For more information on Pete Beat’s newest album, visit here.

  • Gord Downie & Bob Rock Share New Single “The Moment is a Wild Place”

The late Gord Downie & Canadian producer Bob Rock have just released their latest single “The Moment Is A Wild Place.” The epic rock duo has also just announced their upcoming album Lustre Parfait, the ninth album to bear Downie’s name outside of The Tragically Hip, and the first to bear Rock’s.

Gord Downie & Bob Rock Share New Single and Upcoming Album

The single is a long-fabled collaboration between Gord Downie, late front man of legendary Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip, and GRAMMY® Award-winning producer/musician Bob Rock. Their partnership began in 2006 when Rock produced The Tragically Hip’s acclaimed 10th studio album, World Container, followed in 2009 by the chart-topping We Are The Same

Gord Downie & Bob Rock Share New Single and Upcoming Album

Robert Jens Rock, record producer, engineer, guitarist, and songwriter has produced and engineer top-selling albums by such timeless artists as Metallica, Bon Jovi, The Tragically Hip, The Cult, Mötley Crüe, Aerosmith, Cher, Loverboy, Bryan Adams, Simple Plan, Michael Bublé and many others. He is known for his robust, radio-friendly production touch and the intuition to play to an artist’s character and strengths, Rock is perhaps best known for his long-standing role as producer for Metallica.

Gord Downie & Bob Rock Share New Single and Upcoming Album

“I’ve always been a fan of long pieces of music,” says Bob Rock. “Setting a mood and going someplace, just taking you somewhere. The music was based on that journey, this rising tide of chords, crescendos in the chorus. Somehow, I stumbled on this magic chord, a simple minor to a major progression, and it moved me. And Gord reacted to it. It’s absolute perfection in terms of songwriting and in terms of what he did. It’s special because of what he talks about. The lyric was written before he was diagnosed with the sickness that he had. They say you gotta live in the moment. It causes you to look back, and I get choked up every time I hear it, still. I think most people will be moved by it. It’s one of his finest moments.”

More than a decade in the making, Lustre Parfait sees Downie’s peerless lyricism and incendiary heart given newfangled energy by his longtime friend and collaborator, famed producer/musician Bob Rock.

Gord Downie is the late lead singer and songwriter of The Tragically Hip, who, over more than 30 years and across fourteen studio albums, built an enduring legacy as perhaps the essential Canadian rock band. With seven solo albums to his name, Downie’s own music refutes definition, renowned for its adventurous poetry, collaboration, elastic composition, and singular vocal wail.

Unfortunately, Downie passed away on October 17th, 2017. Since his passing, The New York Times stated that Downie has “no parallel in the United States. Imagine Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Michael Stipe combined into one sensitive, oblique, poet-philosopher, and you’re getting close.”

“First and foremost Gord was my friend,” continues Rock, “and having the opportunity to work with him on these songs was one of the biggest highlights of my professional life. I am grateful that I got to witness his genius in such close proximity.”

  • Sparks to Perform at Beacon Theatre

In their more than 50-year history, pop-rock duo Sparks have never headlined a tour as big as the one they’re about to embark on this May. The duo will be performing in four North American venues, with the first at the Beacon Theatre in New York on Tuesday, June 27, and the last at a to-be-announced venue in their hometown of Los Angeles, CA on Sunday, July 16.

  • The Wood Brothers Announce New Album, 5 Stops in NY on National Tour

Roots band The Wood Brothers have announced their eighth studio album, titled Heart Is The Hero, which is set to be released on April 14 through Honey Jar/Thirty Tigers. The album will be supported by a tour, with stops in Buffalo, Ithaca, New York City, Accord, and Fairpoint. Prior to embarking on their tour, the band will release the first single from Heart Is The Hero in February.

From left to right: Chris Wood, Jano Rix, and Oliver Wood

The Wood Brothers consist of brothers, Chris and Oliver Wood, who grew up in Boulder, Colorado. Their “honorary sibling,” Jano Rix is also in The band. They focused more on the importance of performing rather than studio perfection for this album, resulting in an album that emphasizes the themes of presence, grace, and faith.

“The chorus of the album’s title track says, ‘the heart is the hero of every song.’ By no means was it intentional, but much of the material we were writing for this record seemed to come full circle to the idea of trusting in your heart in matters that you can’t control,” says Oliver Wood.

I’m looking forward to going on the road with these new songs from Heart Is The Hero and seeing how they evolve from night to night when performed in front of audiences. The recording process for this album was completely different from our last one, Kingdom In My Mind, where we had all the time in the world to experiment, tinker, and shape performances. For those sessions, I was living in Nashville close to Oliver and Jano, but I’ve since relocated to Canada, so our time to record together this time around had to be extremely focused and intentional.

    Chris Wood

The Wood Brothers tour has New York shows that start this March. Dates and venues are available below. As of Jan. 26, artist pre-sale has begun. General on-sale started Jan. 27. Tickets can be purchased at thewoodbros.com.

  • Oropendola Releases “Knocking Down Flowers” off upcoming debut album

Brooklyn‘s Oropendola has announced the release of her newest LP Waiting For The Sky To Speak out on March 17th. Along with this exciting news, she has just released the single track on the album “Knocking Down Flowers,” accompanied with a beautifully hazy and shimmering video to go with it.

When listening to “Knocking Down Flowers,” Schubert finds life in the least likely of places: a construction site. Here, she recognizes and illuminates the power of living at the intersection of contrasts.

Waiting For The Sky To Speak is Joanna Schubert’s debut album as Oropendola, a word that means “golden pendulum.” The album’s emotional core comes through on roiling ballad “Trust the Sun” and clear-eyed album closer “When You Carried Me,” which both look to the sun, another kind of golden pendulum, as a guiding force.

Set to release March 17th, these tracks shimmer with bursts of energy and emotion, swinging from playfulness to earnestness with deft, technicolor brushstrokes. The album is a celebration of choosing life even in the face of its ephemerality, and of finding motion even in the midst of stillness.

While much of the rest of Waiting for the Sky to Speak careens across black-ice patches of inner conflict, both these songs offer a tentative hand outward, towards love, friendship, and family. The fixed sun in a changeable sky as she coaxes herself back out into the world.

Joanna says of the track and its inspiration, “In January 2020, I started recording myself improvising every morning – “morning pages” inspired by The Artist’s Way, a creative self-help book. I recorded morning pages #1 soon after a pivotal, complicated, on-and-off relationship “reached its end. Round and round we went, addicted to one another, unable to break free of a sticky cycle that prevented us from fully blooming together. That song seed turned into Knocking Down Flowers within a few days.”
