New York City is the epicenter of music-making and recording studios in the Empire State, and the Big Apple has over 200 studios spread across the five boroughs. In doing so, New York City surpasses the rest of the state by having the most recording studios in a single region.
Numerous prominent names in the music business have recorded in New York City, including New York natives Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Lana Del Ray, Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga, Q-Tip, A Tribe Called Quest, Mariah Carey, and Jennifer Lopez, as well as non-natives like Britney Spears, Beyonce, Destiny’s Child, Kanye West, Rihanna, Whitney Houston, Sia, Taylor Swift, and Gwen Stefani. For the first time, we are doing what no major outlet has done before, listing all the recording studios in New York State and the prominent singers who have made music there.
Radio City Music Hall is one of the top music and entertainment venues in New York State, where several of the industry’s top performers have had shows.
Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village has been the go-to studio for several recording artists and originally came to be in 1968 after Jimi Hendrix and his manager Michael Jeffery bought a newly defunct nightclub called The Generation. On August 26, 1970, Hendrix hosted the grand opening of his psychedelic studio lair to fellow musicians and friends. Guests included Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton, Ron Wood, and Patti Smith. Today, Electric Lady Studios is made famous by Jimi Hendrix and classic 70s sessions with The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, and Patti Smith, among others, and maintains its reputation as the most hallowed grounds for recorded music. It is the oldest working and thriving recording studio in New York City.
“I put on my straw hat and walked downtown, but when I got there, I couldn’t bring myself to go in,” recalls Patti Smith in her award-winning memoir, Just Kids. “By chance, Jimi Hendrix came up the stairs and found me sitting there like some hick wallflower and grinned.”
Electric Lady has four studios available for artists’ use, A, B, C, and D.
Studio “A” is home to a fully restored Neve 8078 – a hand-wired analog console that as recently as 2011 absorbed 2500 hours of highly skilled labor, utilizing only the highest-end components. The console was later outfitted with Martin Sound Flying Faders II. The studio’s 35′ x 38′ live room boasts an impressive collection of vintage microphones, instruments, and amps, as well as an almost palpable history. It is Electric Lady’s largest and most versatile space.

For ten years, Studio C has been home to mix engineer Tom Elmhirst. Elmhirst has worked with artists like Adele, Frank Ocean, David Bowie, Amy Winehouse, and more, including 16 Grammy wins. He currently holds the record for most Grammys won by an engineer in a single year. Random Chance Records in New York City was built by Farida Sheralam, and the studio’s website was created with NationBuilder. Sheralam was working on a book about the life of blues mandolinist James “Yank” Rachell (Blues Mandolin Man, University Press of Mississippi, 2001.) She thought about all of Rachell’s LPs that were out of date by that point, and in the process of obtaining the rights to Rachell’s music, Sheralam inadvertently created a record label. Sheralam obtained a bar code, website, advertising in blues magazines, etc. Then she started getting sent demos from artists, and the rest is history. Since then, Sheralam has kept the label going and has released some really good blues, jazz, Latin, world, and whatever CDs.

New York-based artist The Bones of J.R. Jones have released the single and music video for their newest song “The Good Life,” the third leading song for his October 13 album Slow Lightning.
Preparing for his first project in five years, Jonathon Linaberry’s (best known by his stage name The Bones of J.R. Jones) “The Good Life” arrives alongside a music video featuring actress Maggie McDowell who encompasses many of the song’s free-thinking themes in the visual form.
Across the music video, McDowell ditches the past and thrives on her own, flees the chaos of a day job, explores the open fields of life, and overall indulges in moments of pure joy, the song’s central message.
Prior to “The Good Life,” Jones dropped “The Flood” on July 17 and the lead single “Heaven Help Me” on June 20, further setting the stage for the 12-track Slow Lightning coming this October.
When it comes to the creative process for “The Good Life” music video, Linaberry discusses how he “wanted this video to walk the line of joy and heaviness of life,” utilizing McDowell’s acting skills to create the additionally help build the song’s storyline.
“’The Good Life’ was definitely a product of me trying to break through and learn to enjoy the moment I am in. Even if that moment is hard. Even if it is frustrating. Even if it feels like treading water, which in my mind is a synonym for death. I suppose I wrote ‘The Good Life’ to help remind myself of that. That we can always find a way out.”

The iconic hip-hop group The Fat Boys was recently inducted into the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) at its newly opened museum in Stony Brook. Kool Rock-Ski (Damon Wimbley), the last surviving member of The Fat Boys, accepted the induction in person from hip-hop legend and LIMEHOF inductee Erick Sermon of EPMD. Public Enemy’s DJ Johnny Juice (also a LIMEHOF inductee) was also on hand to show support and speak about the group.
“It’s definitely an honor on behalf of the group, two members who are no longer here,” Kool Rock-Ski said. “To accept this on their behalf is huge because they brought so much to the culture. Their legacy lives on with an award like this. We got to the pinnacle of our success—and we got there the hard way, by doing a lot of hard work. We did a lot of hard work.”
The Fat Boys rose to fame in the 1980s, when they pioneered their influential beatbox style of hip-hop music. The group was from East New York in Brooklyn and included “Prince Markie Dee” (Mark Morales), “Kool Rock-Ski” (Damon Wimbley), and “Buff Love” (Darin Robinson). They would heavily influence hip-hop culture through beatbox, comedic charisma, and rhymes. The trio released seven studio albums, four of which went gold by RIAA. In addition to their music, they went on to star in three feature films: Krush Groove, Knights of the City, and Disorderlies.
The Fat Boys had several successful singles which included “Stick ‘Em,” “Can You Feel It,” “The Fat Boys Are Back,” “Wipe Out,” “Fat Boys,” and “Jail House Rap,” to name a few. Throughout their career, they participated in several tours, one of which was Fresh Fest. Despite having eventually broken up as a group, each of the three members maintained a strong brotherhood. The Fat Boys is credited as having had a strong influence on the development and growing popularity of hip-hop.
“The Fat Boys introduced the beatbox, to the world and the song they made was funky to me,” said EPMD’s Erick Sermon, himself a LIMEHOF inductee, when he officially inducted The Fat Boys on stage. “I’m honored to do this because my memories of my kitchen on that ledge were playing The Fat Boys album.”
Kurtis Blow, another LIMEHOF inductee, has a personal connection to The Fat Boys, as he produced their first two albums.
“The Fat Boys being inducted into the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame is so well deserved,” Blow said in a written statement that congratulated the group on this honor.
“These young men were talented and passionate about their craft at a very young age. Producing The Fat Boys was one of the highlights of my career. Rest in peace, Buffy (the Human Beatbox Master) and Prince Markie Dee (Mark Morales). I will never forget you, and you are greatly missed. Continue to carry the torch, Kool Rock-Ski!”
LIMEHOF has long recognized the unique talent and contributions that Long Island artists brought to the hip-hop genre. Notable hip-hop inductees include LL Cool J, Run-DMC, Public Enemy, Eric B. & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Kurtis Blow, Whodini, Salt-N-Pepa, and EPMD. Earlier this year, LIMEHOF held an event to honor the 50th anniversary of hip-hop which had a strong participation and turnout from Long Island artists.
“This historic induction—coupled with our recent 50thAnniversary of Hip-Hop Concert—cements Long Island’s legacy as one of the most important regions in the country for contributing to hip-hop’s long-term success,” said Ernie Canadeo, LIMEHOF Chairman.
“Inducting The Fat Boys into the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame is a tribute to their enduring influence—recognizing their role in shaping the genre and inspiring generations,” said Tom Needham, LIMEHOF Vice Chairman and longtime host of the “Sounds of Film” radio show, and who organized the induction event.
At the induction ceremony, Kool Rock-Ski announced that he is working on a documentary film about The Fat Boys and intends to hold the premiere at LIMEHOF when it’s released.

Newly-minted trap producer Michael Vincent Waller has found his latest muse, teaming up with Atlanta-based Anycia for his latest single “Makin’ em’ Dance.” The Staten Island bred producer continues to broaden his musical horizons dropping this slowed-down thumper with the up-and-coming rapper.
MVW and Anycia are “Makin em’ Dance”
In similar fashion, MVW tabs Anycia as the latest to rhyme over his unique production. “Makin em’ Dance” is a slow-pace thumper. Backed by poignant piano and violin chop and thumping 808 drums that offers a spaced-out ambiance, the Atlanta-based rhymer delivers the type of easy-going and mellow flow that meshes so well with MVW’s minimalist style.
Altogether, MVW is ramping up and diversifying his releases in anticipation of another album. The California-based producer has raised his profile with two unique projects in his first two years as a hip hop producer. As of late MVW has teamed with TiaCorine and Lil Cherry for the global trap record “Tru Tru.” Not to mention a pair of summer releases with the Chicago-bred Valee as they tease their upcoming joint-album.
