  • In Focus: The Chicks Live at CMAC

    As the sky transitioned from a vibrant blue to hues of pink and orange, the scene was set for The Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks. The trio, consisting of Natalie Maines, Emily Strayer, and Martie Maguire, had captured the hearts of audiences for decades with their harmonious blend of country, folk, and Americana music. This is the first tour under the bands new name.

    The mood was elevated as the show’s opener, the venerable Ben Harper, took to the stage. Known for his soulful blend of folk, rock, and blues, Harper’s performance was nothing short of electrifying. His masterful guitar skills and heartfelt lyrics resonated deeply with the audience, setting the tone for an unforgettable evening. Harper’s ability to effortlessly weave together messages of love, unity, and introspection with his dynamic musical talents showcased his status as a true artist.

    As the night unfolded, one thing became abundantly clear: The Chicks were not only there to entertain but to connect. Each song was a chapter in a story, an invitation to experience life’s highs and lows, love and heartache, resilience and redemption. The beauty of their music lies in its universality, and that night, it felt like the crowd was singing their own stories through every lyric.

    One remarkable aspect of the performance was the synchronization of visual elements with the music. As The Chicks’ harmonies soared, the backdrop came alive with breathtaking visuals that amplified the emotions of each song. From nostalgic montages to evocative animations, the visual journey was a mesmerizing accompaniment to their already stirring music.

  • Tedeschi Trucks Band Take It Higher in Canandaigua

    Another beautiful summer night on the shores of Canandaigua Lake enjoying some live music at CMAC. Such was the fate for the thousands of fans who filled the shell and lawn for the Tedeschi Trucks Band show Tuesday night. What could be better?

    The stage would also be filled to the max. Reggae great Ziggy Marley and his ten-piece band would command the stage for an hour-long opening set before the Tedeschi Trucks Band would take over, besting Marley with their unit of twelve. At nights end however a band of eighteen would be serenading the audience. Six from Marley’s band would join the headliners for a raucous encore of a mashup of Sly and the Family Stone’s “Sing a Simple Song” and “I Want to Take You Higher.”

    Like a series finale, all the story lines from the evening came to a head at once, resolving in highly entertaining fashion. Mini-jams broke out all over: a keyboard duel, a 2-man bass-off, a drums and percussion battle, a triple guitar threat, horns aplenty, and a handful of vocalists directing it all to a t. The entire audience was on their feet, amazed at how they managed to wrap up the evening so perfectly.

    Watching it unravel song by song, it was a lot to binge in just one evening. Marley flexed his heritage in the opening set, getting properly political with the dark dub of “See Dem Fake Leaders” and “Justice,” which effortlessly worked in splashes of his father’s “Get Up Stand Up.” Those contrasted nicely with the sunnier “We Are the People” and “Circle of Peace.” His two female backup singers added some edge with rapping over “The Lucky One” and the soulful closer “Look Who’s Dancin’” while also exhibiting some entrancingly good dance moves.

    The intrigue was set, it was time for the main act. The Tedeschi Trucks Band worked a solid groove on Joe Cocker’s “Woman to Woman,” using it as a quasi walk-out tune for Susan Tedeschi. When she finally took the stage, she immediately commanded it, her incredible voice carrying over all else. She would continue to be the person of interest in the following “Anyhow,” ripping a rocking solo reminiscent of Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy.”

    Each ensuing song would bring different members of the endlessly talented ensemble into the spotlight. Piece by piece the story of the band would come together, all working toward that grand finale. The three segments of the band, be it Tedeschi, Truck, or Band, got equal time and each had their highlights. Tedeschi’s voice shined brightest on “Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright,” just crackling and soaring. Trucks’ guitar found no better time to growl, stretch and moan then the set-closing “I Want More / Beck’s Bolero” combo. The drummers took over on Dr. John’s “I Walk On Guilded Splinters,” blasting low rumbles leaving the rest of the band hanging on and hanging in. Keyboardist Gabe Dixon took a turn on the vocals and highlighted his playing on the New Orleans soaked “Gravity.” Saxophonist Kebbi Williams got his turn on the retro soul groover “Part of Me,” and also got to tangle for a spell with Trucks, Dixon, and bassist Brandon Boone on a gorgeous “Midnight in Harlem.”

    Whatever they made it out on a Tuesday night for, be it Tedeschi, Trucks, or any and all of the band, there’s not a chance anyone went home unsatisfied. And now the difficult wait for the next season to get released so we can binge on their talents all over again.

  • In Focus: Weezer Brings Indie Rock Roadtrip to CMAC

    Weezer delivered an electrifying performance on their Indie Rock Roadtrip tour at CMAC on July 3, catering to audiences new and old with their expansive and iconic discography. For almost thirty years Weezer has been churning out hit after hit, including the notable “Buddy Holly” to “Island In The Sun,” as well as their infamous cover of “Africa” by Toto.

    With storms earlier in the day, the clouds lightened up and the beautiful hot sun pounded down on those ready to see a night full of great indie music. Punk rock band Joyce Manor was the first opener of the night, with their grunge-esque sounds and aesthetic, the group kept the audience engaged and in the mood for the night ahead.

    The second opener, Future Islands, was a whole different vibe and experience than the band before it. With their futuristic-sounding instrumentals, unique and intimidating vocals, and a stage presence like no other, the almost 20-year-old band pulled from their extensive and creative discography for a set like no other. Lead singer Samuel T. Herring put on quite the show with his immersive and passionate performance, moving all around the stage and even falling to the floor a few times.

    Finally came the moment everyone was waiting for, Weezer taking the stage. Founded in 1992, the band features Rivers Cuomo (lead), Patrick Wilson (drums), Scott Shriner (guitar), and Brian Bell (bass). Since its inception, Weezer has sold more than 35 million albums worldwide, finding fame with their 1994 record Weezer, dubbed “the Blue Album.” When the curtain fell to start the show, the stage emerged into a car, with the radio and wheel, and graphics showing different roads throughout the whole night, very fitting to the Indie Rock Roadtrip name.

    Weezer opened with “My Name Is Jonas” an iconic and nostalgia-infused track from their first record. The crowd immediately started jumping and moving back and forth as the music started, with the band just as hyped. Quickly moving through tracks, the band performed one of their most famous tracks “Beverly Hills,” featuring the audience screaming the lyrics, “Beverly Hills/That’s where I want to be.”

    Keeping up with the pace, the band grooved to their instrumental track “Return to Ithaka,” and brought out some oldies including “The Good Life,” “Pork and Beans,” “Pink Triangle,” and “El Scorcho.” During “You Gave Your Love to Me Softly,” Weezer brought out the lead singer of Joyce Manor, Barry Johnson, to sing, adding more vocals to the already perfected harmonies the band has. At this point, I was already spent from dancing and singing, but I carried on because the show was so energetic and infectious.

    Things got softer in the middle of the show to give the audience the much-needed break, with Rivers Cuomo performing solo acoustic tracks like “I’m Just Being Honest,” the live debut of the track, and the infamous “Only in Dreams,” bringing out the rest of the members for the songs long instrumental break.

    The rest of the concert was exciting and fun with more popular tracks like “Island in the Sun” bringing out new stage effects like a giant sun, and other tracks like “Say It Ain’t So,” seeing the crowd at their loudest. My favorite part of the night was the encore because the crowd was the most hype they had been so far, with songs like “Surf Wax America,” and “Buddy Holly,” ending the most perfect evening. Overall, Weezer’s Indie Rock Roadtrip was exciting, fun, and very tame, leading to a great experience full of amazing music.

  • Darius Rucker Squares off with Mother Nature at CMAC

    With their second big show of the year in three days, CMAC dodged a huge storm by Mother Nature to let Darius Rucker bring his “Starting Fires” tour into the Finger Lakes region. Darius making a return stop at CMAC after playing here in 2021 made it a night worth remembering. This was the third date of his 20 city “Starting Fires” tour.

    Up and coming act Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors brought their contemporary style of Nashville country to the stage as the opening act as Darius got things going around 9:15. 

    Darius Rucker opened the night with “Have a Good Time” followed by a crowd favorite “Beers & Sunshine” and then “Drinking & Dialing.”

    Paying tribute to John Mellencamp, Rucker then did his version of “Pink Houses” that was very well received.  For Hootie & the Blowfish fans, Darius also sang some of his old classics, “Hold my Hand”, and “Let Her Cry.”

    Since leaving the Grammy Award-winning Hootie and the Blowfish, whose debut album “Cracked Rear View remains in the top 10 albums sold of all time, Darius has become one the top country stars today.  Since releasing his first country LP in 2008 Darius has four # 1 albums on the Billboard Country charts, plus 10 #1 singles. 

    For those at CMAC waiting to hear his biggest country hit “ Wagon Wheel” they had to wait till the end of the night as it was the third of three encore songs which came after “Valerie“ and “ Hands on me.”

  • Santana Elevates Canandaigua’s Consciousness at CMAC

    Santana made his eighth visit, and first since 2017, back at CMAC in Canandaigua on Thursday, June 22, part of his 1001 Rainbows tour and to open up the season for the venue. The shed was packed and so was the stage, as Carlos always has a hefty crew along to bring his unique fusion of Latin and rock music to fruition.

    This time at CMAC, Santana had Ray Green on vocals and trombone, Andy Vargas on vocals, Benny Rietveld on bass, David Matthews on keys, Tommy Anthony on guitar, Paoli Mejias on congas, the great Karl Perrazo on percussion, and Santana’s wife, Cindy Blackman Santana on one of the biggest drum kits you’ll see.

    With puffs of smoke filling the air, and tribal music and videos playing on a huge screen, they all took the stage, picking up the beat and launching into “Soul Sacrifice.” A sizeable rhythm section break, an organ solo, some trombone, and of course Santana’s signature searing guitar all made the rounds from the get-go.

    There was no holding back and no wasted time. With no pause they launched into “Jingo” and from there “Evil Ways.” A trio of tunes off Santana’s 1969 debut, songs he must have played as much as anyone has played the same songs ever. Yet they were played with fire and urgency, Santana giving his ensemble direction with glances, nods and motions. The early hit train kept rolling along with “Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Woman” and “Oye Como Va” as classic Santana footage played over the screens. A long line of musical history still delighting and energizing.

    “Our goal is to flood you with enthusiasm,” Santana announced at the first of only a few very short breaks. Later he urged the crowd to “Elevate the consciousness of the planet to stop the corruption.”

    The band continued to work through Santana’s vast catalog, seemingly chronologically. A big hit of the mid 70’s followed, with “Everybody’s Everything” including a ripping bass solo, “Europa,” “Batuka,” and “No One To Depend On” with a particularly fiery solo from Santana.

    The second half of the show belonged almost solely to their late 90’s hit album, Supernatural, with “(Da Le) Yaleo,” “Put Your Lights On,” “Corazon Espinado” and “Maria Maria” all making big splashes with the audience.

    With a massive catalog to draw from, they still found plenty of room to pay tribute to other musical heroes. A subtle tease of his friend Mahavishnu John McLaughlin here, and few riffs from The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” there. A seemingly random mash-up of James Brown’s “Funky Good Time,” The Doors’ “Roadhouse Blues” and The Chambers Brothers’ “Love Peace and Happiness,” may have just been an excuse for Santana to squeeze in some final unadulterated guitar shredding into the encore.

    Though the encore showstopper was handed to his wife, as she was granted a massive drum solo that brought the house down. Carlos has been around long enough to know how to put on one a hell of a rock show, and how to go home with happy wife.

  • CMAC 2023 Concerts and Events Calendar feat. Santana, Duran Duran, Weezer and more

    Throughout the summer, the Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC) in Canandaigua offers various concerts and events. Beginning in June and lasting until September, the lineup includes something for everybody from country stars to rock festivals.

    Located next to the campus of Finger Lakes Community College, the CMAC summer concert series always attracts big crowds enjoying the artists.

    Santana- June 22 at 8 PM

    Grammy Award winning artist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Santana kicks of the CMAC summer series on June 22. Santana will be traveling across North America this summer for his 1001 Rainbows Tour.

    Darius Rucker- June 24 at 8 PM

    Rucker first rose to fame as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of Hootie & the Blowfish. In advance of the release of his forthcoming album Carolyn’s Boy, Rucker began the Starting Fires Tour. Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors are special guests who will also be joining him.

    Weezer- July 3 at 7 PM

    This summer, popular indie rock band Weezer is joined by special guests on their Indie Rock Roadtrip tour. For their CMAC date, Future Islands and Joyce Manor will also be taking the stage as the guests.

    Roc The Lake Music Festival- July 7 at 5 PM

    AJR will be headlining the Roc The Lake Music Festival. A band made up of three brothers (Adam, Jack, and Ryan), AJR is constantly re-envisioning pop music with their music. Also joining the group for the festival is Chelsea Cutler, Lawrence, Blake Rose, and Almost Monday.

    The Doobie Brothers- July 14 at 8 PM

    Four-time Grammy Award winners The Doobie Brothers added a tour stop at CMAC to their 50th Anniversary Tour. For over five decades, The Doobie Brothers have been known for delivering mind-blowing, roots-based, harmony-laden, guitar-driven rock and roll – all of which recently culminated in an induction into the 2020 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

    The Chicks- August 11 at 7:30 PM

    Fresh off the heels of their massively successful U.S. tour last summer, The Chicks return to the stage with their 2023 world tour. They will also be joined by special guest singer-songwriter Ben Harper.

    Dan + Shay- August 19 at 8 PM

    Country duo Dan + Shay will stop at CMAC during their tour promoting their most recent album Good Things. They are best known for their global hits, including “Tequila,” “Speechless,” and “All To Myself.”

    Duran Duran- September 3 at 7 PM

    Continuing to perform to huge concert audiences around the world since the band first formed in 1980, Duran Duran has seen more than 100 million record sales worldwide. In the past year alone, they performed live at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace, headlined London’s Hyde Park and, in a full circle moment, closed the iconic opening ceremony of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in their hometown of Birmingham.

  • CMAC Announces The Doobie Brothers And Dan & Shay For Summer Concerts In Canandaigua

    Constellation Brands – Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC) has announced the latest concerts of their 2023 Summer Concert lineup – rock band The Doobie Brothers and country duo Dan + Shay.

    On July 14th, four-time GRAMMY Award winners and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees, The Doobie Brothers, will perform at CMAC. This follows The Doobie Brothers 50th Anniversary Tour dates in Australia, Japan and Singapore prior to resuming their North American 2023 run.

    Multiple platinum albums and 50 years later, The Doobie Brothers’ stop at CMAC will see their collection of hits once again be played together in full for the first time in 25 years.

    CMAC will also see country duo Dan + Shay on August 19th. Dan + Shay’s mark on country music continues to grow with the release of their highly anticipated fourth studio album, Good Things.

    Produced by the duo’s Dan Smyers, the highly imaginative LP is the first country album in the streaming era to achieve RIAA Gold certification at release and is one of the only 12 albums all-genre to be released and go Gold in 2021.

    In 2021, they became the first and only artist to win the GRAMMY Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance 3x consecutively since the category’s inception. The reigning Favorite Country Duo or Group winners claimed a 3rd consecutive win for the category at the American Music Awards, where they had swept their categories in 2020, becoming the first country artist ever to win Collaboration of the Year.

  • Counting Crows to Perform at 5 NY Amphitheaters this Summer on tour with Dashboard Confessional

    Grammy and Academy Award-nominated rock band Counting Crows are scheduled to tour this summer with Dashboard Confessional, performing at five amphitheaters in New York.

    They will kick off their New York performances on July 1 at St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview in Syracuse, followed on July 2 with a show at Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center in Canandaigua. On July 5, the band will perform at Saratoga Performing Arts Center. This will be followed by another show at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theatre on July 8. Counting Crows will finish their New York tour shows on July 9 at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.

    Formed in San Francisco, Counting Crows’ career spans seven studio albums over nearly three decades. The band’s debut studio album, August and Everything After, was released in Sept. 1993 and peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 weekly chart. They found further success when their 1996 second studio album, Recovering the Satellites, peaked at number 1 on the Billboard 200 weekly chart. Their music has been prominently featured in pop culture, including “Colorblind”, from their 1999 third album This Dessert Life, being included in the soundtrack for the 1999 film Cruel Intentions. Their seventh studio album, Somewhere Under Wonderland, was released in 2014, and their newest EP, Butter Miracle, was released in 2021.

    Dashboard Confessional

    Rock band Dashboard Confessional originated in Boca Raton, Florida, and is led by singer Chris Carrabba. Their debut album, The Swiss Army Romance, was released in March 2000. They released their ninth album, All The Truth That I Can Tell, in 2022, touring with fellow rock band Jimmy Eat World in support of the album on the “Surviving the Truth” tour. The band has a long history with Counting Crows, first meeting in 2003 at the 17th annual Bridge School Benefit Concert. In the nearly 20 years since they have formed both a professional and personal relationship together.

  • Weezer Announces Indie Rock Roadtrip Tour This Summer, Coming to CMAC and Forest Hills Stadium

    Rock group Weezer announced the Indie Rock Roadtrip Tour set for this summer, joined by some of the biggest names in indie rock today, coming to CMAC and Forest Hills Stadium in July.

    The summer tour will support last year’s release of SZNZ, the season-themed collection of EPs Weezer shared throughout each quarter of 2022. They’ve sold over ten million records in the United States and 35 million worldwide. Created in 1992, the group came together when Rivers Cuomo joined Patrick Wilson, Matt Sharp, and Jason Cropper, who Brian Bell later replaced. Some of their hits include “Buddy Holly,” “Undone (The Sweater Song,” “Say It Ain’t So,” “Island In The Sun,” and many more.

    The Indie Rock Roadtrip features openers Modest Mouse and Momma, Future Islands and Joyce Manor, Spoon, and White Reaper. The tour will be coming to CMAC on July 3 and Forest Hills Stadium on July 13. Tickets are on sale on Friday, March 3  at 10 a.m., for more information, go here.

  • Grammy Award Winning Group Tedeschi Trucks Band Announce Summer Tour, Coming to CMAC and SPAC

    The Grammy Award-winning group Tedeschi Trucks Band announce a run of summer tour dates across the US, hitting twenty cities, including SPAC on July 1 and CMAC on July 11.

    Tedeschi Trucks Band, led by the husband/wife duo of guitarist Derek Trucks and singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi, formed in 2011. The founders have been described by NPR as “two of the best roots rock musicians of their generation.” The twelve piece group is known globally for their unique sound and ability to blend distinctive genres of American music. Their shows are “nothing short of exhilarating” (Salon), with annual summer amphitheater tours and multi-night residencies across America to tours through Europe and Japan.

    The group continues to tour in support of I Am The Moon, their acclaimed fifth studio project, which finds them “at their finest and most adventurous” (NPR). New this year will be single support acts, leaving Tedeschi Trucks Band with longer set times. Country and blues singer/songwriter Vincent Neil Emerson will support the tour’s first few dates and return in late July for the final five stops — and legendary musician, producer and activist, Ziggy Marley will support all dates in between. The TTB Fan Club Presale will begin Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. local time with an Artist Presale beginning Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. local time.
