  • Sarah McLachlan Announces “The Fumbling Towards Ecstasy Tour,” Stops in Lewiston and NYC

Grammy and Juno-award winning artist Sarah McLachlan announces The Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th Anniversary Tour, live across North America next summer with special guest Feist.

The 30-date run includes a stop at Artpark Mainstage Theater in Lewiston, as well as a stop at Radio City Music Hall.

Sarah McLachlan is one of the most celebrated singer songwriters in entertainment with over 40 million albums sold worldwide. She has received three Grammy Awards and twelve Juno Awards over her career and has been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

In addition to her personal artistic efforts, she founded the Lilith Fair tour, which showcased female musicians and brought over two million people together during its three-year run. Lilith Fair raised over $7 million for local and national charities and was the most successful all-female music event, launching the careers of numerous performers.

Following Lilith Fair, Sarah was awarded the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Visionary Award for furthering the careers of women in music. In 2002, she founded the non-profit Sarah McLachlan School of Music which provides high quality music education and mentorship free to children and youth facing various barriers to access.

Feist, special guest touring with Sarah, is an 11-time Juno Award-winning artist and has a Grammy-nominated album Multitudes. She sets her observation on the countless ways we seek out or deliberately hide from the truth: searching the natural world for portents and good omens, pulling tarot cards and masking our true emotions to spare our loved ones from pain. From a lyrical honesty that’s as confronting as it is unguarded, Feist writes of “A crucible of apex events that brought life to a new temperature.” and of “A new dimension of self awareness that time and experience seemed to require.”

Her sixth full-length and first release since 2017’s critically lauded Pleasure, Multitudes took shape soon after the birth of her daughter and sudden death of her father, a back-to-back convergence of life-altering events that left the Canadian singer/songwriter with “Nothing performative in me anymore.” As she cleansed her songwriting of any tendency to obscure unwanted truths, Feist slowly made her way toward a batch of songs rooted in a raw and potent realism which is touched with otherworldly beauty.

At the completion of the developmental run of residencies and in turning to the task of creating the album in a bespoke residential studio in the California Redwoods, Feist produced alongside her frequent co-producers Mocky and Robbie Lackritz, with an ensemble including Todd Dahlhoff, Amir Yaghmai, Shahzad Ismaily (Lou Reed, Tom Waits) and Gabe Noel (Kendrick Lamar, Kamasi Washington) with guest appearances by Blake Mills (Bob Dylan, Perfume Genius) and longtime collaborator Chilly Gonzales.

A supreme setting for her enchanting voice and all its manifestations, Multitudes unfolds with a near-symphonic grandeur despite its moments of absolute starkness, lending an endlessly mesmeric quality to Feist’s meditations on mortality and connection and the frenetic state of the human condition.

“I think it’s interesting as an artist or as a human for that matter, to be able to go back and look at a postcard of a time in your life and reflect on it…I think this tour is going to be a real walk down memory lane for me, and I’m hoping that my audience, many of whom have been with me for 30 years, will also be able to go back in time with me.”

    Sarah McLachlan

The summer tour celebrates McLachlan’s highly acclaimed third studio album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, which first released October 22, 1993 via Le Studio. The album quickly topped the charts in Canada and went certified platinum within a few weeks, selling over 3 million copies worldwide to date. Hit singles include “Possession,” “Hold On,” “Ice Cream,” and “Good Enough,” among others.

The 30th anniversary tour will see McLachlan playing the beloved album in its entirety along with some of her most celebrated songs in iconic venues across North America, including the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, CA, Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO, Radio City Music Hall and many more.

  • In Focus: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Bring Classic Rock Sounds to Artpark

Rock’s finest were on display on Aug. 5 at Artpark in Lewiston, as Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit took the stage, with S.G. Goodman opening. The band was touring in support of their recent release, Weathervanes.

It has been quite the journey for Jason Isbell. The former Drive By Truckers guitarist left the band in 2007 to pursue a solo career. He writes often about his sobriety journey that he started in 2012 in hopes of serving as an inspiration for others. He is often lauded as one of this generation’s best songwriters.   While performing with the 400 Unit, he is backed by Sadler Vaden (guitars), Derry DeBorja (keyboards, accordion), Chad Gamble (drums) and Will Johnson (guitar, percussion). Longtime 400 Unit bass-player Jimbo Hart sat this tour out due to personal reasons.

Jason Isbell performs at the Artpark in Lewiston.

The evening would open with a set by S.G. Goodman. Promptly at 8 pm Goodman’s bandmates took to the stage and jumped right in to the groovy “Work Until I Die.”  After a lengthy instrumental introduction, Goodman took to the stage and the song’s indie garage-rock sound took off.  Goodman, from Hickman, Kentucky, joked with the crowd between songs. “I’m sure by the sound of my voice, you can tell I’m not from around here,” she said with a laugh and a heavy southern accent. Goodman’s songwriting really shined, as she performed tracks like “Space and Time,” a song recently covered by Tyler Childers. As the set came to a close, Goodman paid tribute to Waylon Jennings, with a cover of “Waymore’s Blues.”

At promptly 9:10 the house lights dimmed and Isbell’s familiar anchor-dove logo illuminated above the stage. Moments later Isbell and his bandmates took the stage and immediately launched into the crunchy guitar riff of “When We Were Close,” a track chronicling Isbell’s friendship with the late Justin Townes Earle. The crowd quickly stood to their feet and their energy began to build like a pot of water coming to a boil, coming to a complete boil by the third song, “King of Oklahoma.” The powerful, anthemic song saw the audience sing back the song’s chorus in near deafening fashion.

Jason Isbell performs at the Artpark in Lewiston.

As the evening moved on, Isbell’s strength as a song writer became more and more apparent. He has the ability to place the listener directly into the scene of the song, while singing songs dealing with not only his own personal struggles, but issues plaguing society as a whole. The song “Save the World” touches on the need for gun law reform, while “King of Oklahoma” tells the tale of the protagonist struggling with a painkiller addiction. Then, there are more personal songs to Isbell like “Cover Me Up” which addresses coming to sobriety, and Isbell grappling with his own mortality in “If We Were Vampires.”

Isbell and his bandmates shined musically through out the evening as well, with Isbell and Vaden often trading guitar solos. Derry DeBorja added unique layers of sound with his keyboard and accordion playing. Perhaps the pinnacle moment of the evening was the band’s performance of “Miles.” The song, reminiscent of a Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young track, saw layers of sound build upon each other and featured dual percussion, with Gamble and Johnson both taking seats behind a kit. This only further drove the song’s intensity, which peaked with the crash of a gong.

Like all good things, this evening had to come to a close. The band closed with “This Ain’t It,” which saw Isbell and Vaden partaking in one last guitar solo dual, much to the crowd’s delight. It was a fitting way to close an evening of classic rock sounds.

  • 4 Years Later and Young The Giant Returns to Buffalo

Indie artist Talk kicked off the rainy night in Lewiston and had people crowded around to hear his hit “Run Away to Mars.” German rock duo Milky Chance followed up their set just as skies began to clear. • Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit Announce Tour Dates At Artpark, Capitol Theatre, The Paramount

Grammy-Award winners Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit has announced the upcoming release of their eighth album, Weathervanes, along with a brand new North American tour.

Written and produced by IsbellWeathervanes features 13 brand new tracks. “Death Wish,” the debut release from the collection, is available now. Weathervanes is a collection of grown-up songs: Songs about adult love, about change, about the danger of nostalgia and the interrogation of myths, about cruelty and regret and redemption. Some will make you cry alone in your car and others will make you sing along with thousands of strangers in a big summer pavilion, united in the great miracle of being alive. Isbell is a storyteller at the peak of his craft, observing his fellow wanderers, looking inside and trying to understand, reducing a universe to four minutes.

“There is something about boundaries on this record,” said Isbell. “As you mature, you still attempt to keep the ability to love somebody fully and completely while you’re growing into an adult and learning how to love yourself.”

    Jason Isbell

Weathervanes was recorded at Nashville’s Blackbird Studio and features Jason Isbell’s Grammy-winning band, The 400 Unit. Special guests include GRAMMY winner Amanda Shires and harmonicist Mickey Raphael, with background vocals on “If You Insist“ by renowned producer and engineer Sylvia Massy & Ian Rickard and Strings on “Death Wish” by Morgan O’Shaughnessey

Also announced today, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit will be hitting the road throughout the summer, including a show at Artpark Mainstage Theater in Lewiston on August 5.

Tickets are on sale now via the band’s website.
