  • Michael Franti And Spearhead To Play ArtPark, Central Park, Catskills This Summer 

    Reggae-rock group Michael Franti and Spearhead have announced their newest tour will be making multiple New York stops this summer.

    Michael Franti has spent decades peeling back the layers on what it means to be human, how to be the best version of ourselves and how to follow our hearts. Now, he aims to magnify those concepts enabling us all to apply them to the world around us with the coast-to-coast Big Big Love Tour 2023.

    “Big big love represents being able to hold space for the micro and the macro of love,” Franti explains. “Everyone has someone they love, whether it’s their child, spouse, pet or friend. But then there’s holding space to love people of difference – people who are in the midst of war, people where there is pain and suffering. You show up as love, determination and spirit in those places where people really need a caring soul connection to help them heal. That’s what big big love is: holding space for the personal and the worldly.”

    Known all over the world for their energizing live shows that foster an invigorating sense of community, Michael Franti & Spearhead embody that attitude as they embark on the Big Big Love Tour 2023, featuring over 50 shows from May to August, including stops at California Roots Music & Arts Festival, Reggae Rise Up and Central Park Summer Stage, along with a highly anticipated return to the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

    Tickets go on sale this Friday, Feb. 3 at 10 a.m. local time. Franti & Spearhead will be joined on this leg by SOJA, Tank & The Bangas, Fortunate Youth, Lawrence, The Dip, Phillip Phillips and more.

  • Lotus Sells Out Buffalo’s Town Ballroom 

    On Saturday January 28, electronic jam band Lotus made a stop in Buffalo in honor of their new album Bloom & Recede. The Town Ballroom was packed with Lotus fans for a sold-out show from the Indiana natives.

    The group consists of Jesse Miller (bass/synths), Mike Greenfield (drums), Tim Palmieri (guitar), Luke Miller (guitar/keyboards), and Chuck Morris (percussion). Lotus is known for blending electronic with jam music forging a new musical taste in the jam band landscape. They don’t shy away from any genres. Their influences consist of electronic dance music, funk, post-rock and dance rock.  

    The long-running quintet opened up the night playing “Tip of the Tongue,” followed by “Contagion” which they hadn’t played live in three years. Lotus brings a nuanced groove to jam band culture. They meticulously build up beats and take the crowd on a journey through their music.

    For their second act they performed a cover of the popular Rufus Du Sol song “Innerbloom.” The use of synths and guitar riffs gave a new spin on this EDM classic which definitely needs to be on Spotify soon. 

    They ended the night with an even greater crowd pleaser: a cover of Talking Heads, “Once in a Lifetime.” Lotus enhances energy levels and uses psychedelic rock stylings to make their show an experience for all show goers. Not to mention their lighting exhibited the mood of each song and only furthered their effortlessly addicting ambience that they can create.

  • GRAMMY Award-Nominated Rockers Fall Out Boy Announce Tour, Coming to Forest Hills and Darien Center

    Fall Out Boy are GRAMMY award-nominated multi-platinum selling rockers. They have announced a 2023 headlining tour, coming to Forest Hills and Darien Center.

    Fall Out Boy is one of the biggest-selling rock bands. The group is comprised of vocalist Patrick Stump, bassist and lyricist Pete Wentz, and drummer Andy Hurley. Joe Trohman, the group’s guitarist, announced he would be stepping away from the group due to mental health reasons, and won’t be involved in this headline tour.

    Their seventh studio album MANIA debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 in January 2018 and garnered a GRAMMY nomination for Best Rock Album. Other records that have done well on Billboard charts include 2015’s AMERICAN BEAUTY/AMERICAN PSYCHO and 2013’s Save Rock and Roll, whose song “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)” went multi-platinum.

    Formed in Chicago in 2001, the band ties the city into everything they do. Last week they performed a surprise show at the 1,000-capacity venue Metro, with an immediate sell-out. It is down the street from Wrigley Field, which will be the venue for the opening date of the tour, and was last performed in 2002 by the group. Stump joked with the crowd saying “Twenty years ago, I told my mom I was going to take a semester off [college] because we were headlining Metro and I wanted to see how that would work out.” The night was hailed by Variety as a “triumphant hometown show,” noting that “there are concerts, and there are events, and a hometown show in Chicago from [Fall Out Boy] is definitely in the latter category.”

    The band will be releasing a new record So Much (For) Stardust on March 24. Two singles have been released thus far, “Love From The Other Side” and “Heartbreak Feels So Good,” and bring the band back to their rock roots, and is described by the Chicago Sun-Times as “tak[ing] all they’ve learned and accomplished the past 20 years and combine it with their unflinching roots for an ultimate glow-up.”

    The So Much For (Tour) Dust headline will feature Bring Me The Horizon on most dates, as well as Alkaline Trio, New Found Glory, Four Years Strong, The Academy Is…, Royal & The Serpent, Games We Play, Daisy Grenade and Carr on select shows throughout the tour’s run. They will be hitting Forest Hills Stadium on Aug. 1 and Darien Lake Amphitheater on Aug. 4. Fall Out Boy’s mailing list pre-sale will begin Thursday, Feb. 2 at 10 a.m. local.   • Five Can’t Miss Shows in Rochester This February

    We can’t predict if there is ever going to be any significant snow in Rochester this winter, but we can predict you’ll have a blast if you follow our recommendations for live music in February. As much as we’d like to have at least some of the white stuff to enjoy, hopefully not enough to impede your access to any of these shows or to cause any weather-related cancellations. Get out there and support your local bands and venues.

    February 11: Moving Mountains at Flour City Station

    Moving Mountains is a quartet from right here in Rochester. If you like your rock progressive, then these guys will scratch that itch with aplomb. The path from point a to point b is rarely a straight line, and the journey is a wild ride. They’ll be joined by Extended Family and The Ribbon Project. /each band has members with February birthdays, so maybe there will be cake?

    Doors are at 7:45p and tickets are $10.

    February 13: Ethnic Heritage Ensemble at Bop Shop Records

    Drummer Kahil El’Zabar returns to Bop Shop Records with his Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, including Cory Wilkes on trumpet and Alex Harding on saxophone. You will be transported, inspired, moved and touched spiritually, and that will just be the first song. Adventurous mind-expanding jazz doesn’t just come to Rochester for one week in June. Come explore some new sounds.

    February 16: The Mountain Goats, Lily Hiatt at Water Street Music Hall

    Indie-folk rock stalwarts The Mountain Goats come to Water Street Music Hall as a semi-annual reminder to the music lovers of Rochester that not every big show passes us over for Buffalo, Syracuse, and Ithaca. Touring behind their 2022 release, Bleed Out, they’ll bring those and others from their decades-long career for you to sing along, rhythmically bob your head, and perhaps shuffle your feet. Don’t make the mistake of arriving too late to hear opener Lily Hiatt.

    Show starts at 8pm and tickets are $40.

    February 18: JD Simo at Fanatics Pub

    This one is a short drive out of town down in Lima, but totally worth it. Fanatics is a small bar that hosts good blues bands from near and far. On this night, Nashville guitarist JD Simo comes through on his duo tour with drummer Adam Abrashoff. Simo isn’t a straight blues man, mixing in rock, jazz and soul to concoct a unique sound that eventually lead to face-melting jams. He’s got a new album just out this month, Songs from the House of Grease, that’ll do good to warm you up for the show.

    Show starts at 7pm and tickets are $25.

    February 25 – The Moho Collective at Three Heads Brewing

    Rochester’s The Moho Collective, Kurt Johnson on guitar and pedal steel, Justin Rister on bass, and Ryan Barclay on drums and percussion, “collect” musical styles from across the globe, combining them in new and mystifying ways. On this night they will be joined by The Mighty High and Dry’s Alan Murphy on keys which is an addition with exciting possibilities, fleshing out their material in new and interesting ways.

    Doors open at 8pm and tickets are $10.

  • Talking Heads’ Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew Announce Tour, Stops in Buffalo, Albany, NYC

    Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew of Talking Heads have announced additional dates on their upcoming tour, with shows in Albany, Buffalo, and New York City in February and March.

    Talking Heads member Jerry Harrison and noted touring member Adrian Belew will be bringing their popular Remain In Light concert on the road this winter. The album is coming up on its 40 anniversary, and Harrison commented on its significance in his life.

    Remain In Light is a high point in my career. Adrian and I had often discussed the magic of the 1980 tour and the sheer joy it brought to audiences. It is such a delight to see that joy once again in the audiences on the current tour.

    Belew says the tour will leave you “with a happy smile on your face.” Harrison and Belew first reunited to perform material from Remain In Light at the 2021 Peach Music Festival with Turkuaz. It marked Harrison’s first live performance since 1996. 

    The band then reunited at LA’s The Wiltern last month for a celebrated performance which began with a podcast conversation with Tawny Newsome. Harrison and Belew spoke about about the Talking Heads’ incredible rise to fame and the impact they had on music and pop culture.

  • Nickelback Announce New Tour With UBS Arena And Darien Lake Dates

    Nickelback has announced their new “Get Rollin’” tour, in support of their 10th studio album, Get Rollin’.

    The massive run will hit 38 cities this summer, kicking off on Monday, June 12 in Quebec City, Quebec at Videotron Centre, with stops across North America before wrapping up on Wednesday, August 30 in Belmont Park at UBS Arena. Nickelback will also be making a stop at Darien Lake Amphitheater on August 16th.

    Nickelback’s first album in five years, Get Rollin’ was released November 18, 2022, via BMG and debuted at No. 2 across the Current Rock, Alternative, Hard Music and Digital Album charts.   • OSFL Principals to Perform in Concert February 3 at the Rockwell Museum in Corning

    The Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes (OSFL) has announced a showcase concert of the new principal musicians for the next concert on the 22-23 Musicians’ Choice Chamber Series.

    In September, the OSFL held auditions for the open orchestra seats, and these five musicians were appointed as the principal players in their respective sections. Peter Ecklund (bassoon), Frank Gabriel Campos (trumpet), Duane Smith (trombone), Chris McAllister (percussion), and Mario Pietra (bass). “Delighted to showcase the newest stars of our orchestra, and I would like our audience to be familiar with them through this concert,” says Toshiyuki Shimada, OSFL’s Music Director and Conductor.

    The five have collaborated to plan an evening of solo and small ensemble music from Baroque to jazz to modern, including original arrangements and transcriptions for these instruments. This concert will be filled with a wide variety of musical styles and instruments, including the addition of djembe and flugelhorn. Musical selections for this concert will include works by Bach, Beethoven, Mancini, Rodgers and Hart, and more. In honor of the upcoming Valentine’s Day, this concert will include My Funny Valentine and Smile.

    Following the tradition of the Musicians’ Choice Chamber Music Series, oral program notes will be given by the musicians interspersed throughout the performance. The short format program is presented in an intimate, relaxed setting without intermission. A complimentary wine and cheese reception preceding the concert will begin at 6:45 for guests with tickets purchased at least 24 hours in advance. Doors open at 6:30.

    The OSFL offers a concert season of five full orchestra concerts including a side-by-side Young People’s Orchestra and professional musician collaboration, the Musicians’ Choice Chamber Music Series, concerts by the Chorus of the Southern Finger Lakes, the youth ensembles, as well as educational outreach concerts for children. Under the guidance of distinguished Music Director and Conductor, Toshiyuki Shimada, the OSFL is a strong supporter of highlighting the musical achievements of young musicians through the youth ensemble programs, as well as the annual Hertzog Concerto & Aria Competition for young artists in grades 9 – 12. The OSFL collaborates with regional cultural partners, artists, and like-minded organizations to advance mutual artistic growth in the greater Elmira-Corning area.

    Support for the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes comes from Corning Incorporated Foundation, the Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes. The Hilliard Foundation, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

    The next concert on the Musicians’ Choice Chamber Series will be held at North Presbyterian Church on March 31 and is part of the OSFL’s Clara Schumann Festival.

  • Young The Giant Announces North American Tour With Milky Chance In New York

    Multi-platinum selling artist Young The Giant has announced a 2023 summer tour along with rock band, Milky Chance, making across the United States and Canada beginning May 30th in Montreal. In New York, you can catch the tour at Manhattan’s iconic Rooftop at Pier 17 and Niagara County’s Artpark. The tour will also feature special guests TALK and Rosa Linn. 

    The summer tour follows the release of American Bollywood, Young The Giant’s first album in four years. Established in 2004, the band showcases vocalist Sameer Gadhia, guitarist Jacob Tilley and Eric Cannata, Francois Comtois on the drums and bass player Payam Doostzadeh. American Bollywood was co-produced by John Hill and members of Young The Giant. 

    The four-part album can be enjoyed here via AWAL/Jungle Youth Records. With a majority of the lyrics written by the band’s lead singer with Indian ancestry, Sameer Gadhia, the album tells the multi-generational saga of the American immigrant, and the origins, exiles, battles, and denouement of reclaiming their collective identity. “This is not just the story of an Indian-American caught in between two worlds,” the band’s Sameer Gadhia previously said, “it’s also our universal search to find meaning in chaos.”

  • Mikeala Davis Closes out ‘Dead of Winter’ Residency at Tubby’s and Abilene on February 1& 2

    On the brink of a new album, Rochester native, Mikeala Davis and her band, Southern Star, will complete their residency as one of the hottest live music acts in upstate New York. The Catskil transplant returned home for a set of performances at Abilene in Rochester and Tubby’s in Kingston.

    The “Dead of Winter” residency began during a notoriously quiet period live music-wise. A run of sold-out performances have re-affirmed belief that fresh sets, familiar places and homegrown talent would bring people out to enjoy live music.

    In effect, “Dead of Winter” began with a performance at Tubby’s on Wednesday, January 18, with Davis and Southern Star performing weekly on Wednesdays and Thursdays at Tubby’s and Abilene. However, the final two nights of Southern Star’s residency will be on February 1 and 2. To boot, the band will perform two sets nightly, starting with their own tunes and a later Grateful Dead themed set. As a result, the Dead set themes have been varying by week; Mik’s Picks Vol. 1: ‘67-‘72 for week 1, Garcia in its entirety for week 2, and Mik’s Picks Vol. 2: ‘73-‘87 for the upcoming February shows.     We’re planning two sets every night. First set is original songs and second is a dead set. This is a chance for us to revisit some old songs and experiment with new ones while continuing to explore the music of the Grateful Dead. Hope to see you there!

    A classically trained harpist, Mikeala Davis’ style brings together elements of classic rock, ’60s and ’70s pop, roots Americana, and contemporary modern singer-songwriter croons. Davis and Southern Star have shared bills with such names as Bob Weir, Bon Iver, Lake Street Dive. Moreover, Davis joined Phil Lesh & Friends during the first weekend of their Phil-o-Ween residency at The Capitol Theatre. Her newest release is 2022’s The Relix Sessions, which focuses on live versions of tracks from 2018’s Delivery. At the present time, the group is planning a new studio album that will mark the first official studio recordings by Davis and Southern Star.
