  • Spiritualized Mesmerized Buffalo

Souls filled the pews and chairs inside Asbury Hall, a cavernous old church in Buffalo, on Tuesday. Dim light from an overcast nighttime sky peaked through stories-tall stained glass windows. A group, called Spiritualized, was in town to bless the enlightened with sounds from the beyond. A three-woman choir, decked out in flowing white blouses, joined in with joyous singing. The attendees clapped, cheered, sang along and raised their arms in praise. But this was no religious gathering. Rather it was a rock concert, and a devilishly good one at that.

Spiritualized, a 30-plus year-old band out of England, was on the second night of a short week-long stint in the US. There was no opener, no stage banter, almost no dead air at all, just over two hours of glorious music. Bandleader Jason Pierce situated himself on the right side of the stage, seated sideways facing his bandmates. And they were fully engaged from the start.

A spacey noise drifted gently into weightlessness, building repetitively to a crescendo and fizzling back down again in a near ten-minute “Hey Jane” that set the scene for the rest of the evening. Against a starfield backdrop, and with a mirrorball continually sending dots of light orbiting across the stone walls, we were set to explore, not the heavens, but the cosmos. And what more appropriate guide then Pierce, who is also known as J. Spaceman.

“She Kissed Me (It Felt Like a Hit)” blasted into high gear with frantic drumming, manic bass and wailing guitars. That slammed head first into the gorgeous slide guitar and organ swells of “Shine a Light,” which built up to an exultant chorus from the backup singers. Praise be! “I’m Coming Home Again” immediately followed, peeling back layers of rock exposing a quiet and gorgeous interplay of guitar, piano and bass.

With little to no pause between songs, the journey continued on through the night. The band would push, pull and stretch the tempo, between songs and within, creating time vortexes. Strobing lights hitting the mirrorball appeared to slow down time altogether as a hyper synth drone sizzled to silence to close out an intense wall of noise in “The A Song.” “Let It Bleed” was another highlight, as it traveled a slow build to ultimate exaltation, choir and all.

The journey, which made stops along their full catalog, closed out as it began, “Sail On Through” slowly drifting off into space. Spiritualized slowly disengaged from their stations, faced the audience for the first time, and clapped and cheered for us as we for them. Maybe it was a religious experience after all.

Setlist: Hey Jane, She Kissed Me (It Felt Like a Hit), Shine a Light, I’m Coming Home Again, A Perfect Miracle, Always Together With You, I’m Your Man, The Morning After, Here It Comes (The Road) Let’s Go, Best Thing You Never Had (The D Song), Let It Bleed (For Iggy), The A Song (Laid In Your Arms), Damaged, Soul On Fire, Sail On Through E: So Long You Pretty Thing, Come Together

  • Hearing Aide: Ian McCuen “What It Means To Be Young, Sad, and Alone”

Ian McCuen’s sixth album and the longest by far, What It Means To Be Young, Sad, and Alone is a melancholy, transcendent record. It opens with the repeated line, “Funny how it feels like an art, the way things always fall apart. But eventually, so it goes, we all die alone.” With this air of self-aware critique, McCuen crafts a soothing, yet gut-wrenching depiction of truly what it means to be young, sad, and alone.

What It Means To Be Young, Sad, and Alone

Based in Buffalo, Ian McCuen’s first album came in 2017, with three volumes of Songs of Fleeting Permanence over the next few years. They operate relatively solo, writing, composing, and arranging all their own tracks across a wide range of instruments. What It Means To Be Young, Sad, and Alone includes over nine unique instruments, including a harmonica, saxophone, mandolin, banjo, and the ever-present electric guitar.

    Ian McCuen

The full record, boasting an impressive 20 tracks and amassing 80 minutes, follows a distinct style both musically and lyrically. McCuen creates an ethereal soundscape, with delicate vocals that are whispering and soothing.

The first track on the record, “A Reprise For The Lonely,” acts as an introductory point, both sonically and lyrically, for the rest of the record. However, it creates a strong introduction. The organ-like keyboard commands attention, and the backing vocals and whisper-like spoken word are sad, yet hypnotising.

Another song to pay attention to, “Checkerboard Purgatory,” comes as the 11th track on the record. Halfway through the massive tracklist, it easily gets lost among the masses, but it distinguishes itself with a catchy guitar track.

The 19th track on the record, “Vicissitude (So It Goes),” is an impressive 8 and a half minutes. Its vocals are subtle, whispering, and generally mellow, but the melody takes a minor shift halfway through.

Overall, What It Means To Be Young, Sad, and Alone is truly overwhelmingly sad. However, as a self-described “purveyor of sorrow,” this is exactly what McCuen aims to produce. For those that can indulge in the intense emotional experience of their monumental album, it’s a soothing display of poetry and ambient musicianship.

  • Hearing Aide: Timothy Alice & The Dead Star Band ‘Used Cars’

Buffalo-based rock group Timothy Alice & The Dead Star Band released their sophomore record, Used Cars, on November 3. The 8-track album is a follow up to their 2019 debut release, Spacestation AM500.

Used Cars by Timothy Alice & The Dead Star Band

Timothy Alice & The Dead Star Band formed in 2018 in Buffalo, with a collaboration of longtime friends. The band consists of Timothy Patrick Henderson, Matt DiStasio (drums), and Bub Crumlish on bass.

The first track on Used Cars, a title track, is a strong start to the record. With resonant guitars, crooning vocals, and a tempo that urges the listener to sway back and forth, “Used Cars” is a easy yet captivating first track on the group’s sophomore album

Timothy Alice & The Dead Star Band

The fifth track on the record, “North of the Border,” stands out energetically against the rest of the record. This song picks up the pace significantly, and shapes a tangible story throughout the track. The only drawback is the shorter run time of only 2:18, as it is certainly a notable favorite on the album.

“Winning Number,” the sixth track on Used Cars, slows back down just slightly, but not to any disadvantage. “Winning Number” evokes more personality from the vocal intonations, with Henderson’s speak-singing throughout the verses. The track has a captivating outro sequence of guitars and other indecipherable instruments, reminiscent of U2’s “Bad.”

Used Cars is the sophomore album from Timothy Alice & The Dead Star Band, available on all streaming platforms on November 3. Timothy Alice & The Dead Star Band is Timothy Patrick Henderson, Matt DiStasio, and Bub Crumlish.

  • Lynyrd Skynyrd & ZZ TOP Add Shows in Syracuse, Bethel, Wantagh, and Darien Center

The titans of American classic rock ZZ TOP and Lynyrd Skynyrd have announced 36 additional appearances of their joint co-headlining tour – The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour. The tour is set to stop four times in New York, including Syracuse, Bethel, Wantagh, and Darien Center.

ZZ TOP, known for their beards, hotrod cars, spinning guitars, and that magic keychain, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, known for their critically acclaimed album Pronounced Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd, have put their musical talents together for an unforgettable show performing across the United States, now with even more dates, so you have no excuse to miss it.

It was in 1969 Houston when ZZ TOP coalesced from the core of two rival bands, Billy Gibbons’ Moving Sidewalks and Frank Beard and Dusty Hill’s American Blues. ZZ Top‘s 1973 album release, Tres Hombres, catapulted them to national attention with the hit “La Grange,” which is still one of the band’s signature pieces today. Eliminator, their 1983 album was something of a paradigm shift for ZZ TOP.

Their blues roots skew was intact but their high-tech-age trappings were added to the mix that soon found a visual outlet with such tracks as “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs” on the nascent MTV. It was one of the record industry’s first albums to have been certified Diamond, far beyond Gold and Platinum, a reflection of sales exceeding ten million units.

As a touring outfit, they have performed before millions of fans over four continents and have been the subject of their own Grammy-nominated documentary titled That Little Ol’ Band From Texas. The band’s line-up of the bearded Gibbons and Hill and Beard, who ironically is clean-shaven, remained intact for more than 50 years. When Dusty temporarily departed the tour in the summer of 2021, Elwood Francis entered the picture accepting the directive from Dusty to be the perfect choice to stand in on the bass guitar and now handles the low-end duties for the band for the present as well as into the future.

The elements that keep ZZ TOP fresh can be summed up in the three words of the band’s internal mantra: “Tone, Taste, and Tenacity.” As genuine roots performers, they have few peers. Their influences are both the originators of the form – Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Jimmy Reed, et al – as well as the British blues rocker Jimi Hendrix who emerged generations before ZZ’s ascendance.

They have sold hundreds of millions of records over the course of their career, have been officially designated as Heroes of The State of Texas, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (by Keith Richards, no less), and have been referenced in countless cartoons and sitcoms. They are true rock icons and, against all odds, they’re really just doing what they’ve always done.

As Lynyrd Skynyrd celebrates the 50 anniversary of the band’s critically acclaimed debut album Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd’, they resonate as deeply with their multi-generational fan base today as when they first emerged out of Jacksonville, Florida in 1973.

Few ensembles have had a deep impact in creating a lifestyle as Skynyrd has. The band travels forward with a primary mission of celebrating a legacy that honors all who have had a resonating contribution to the lives of hundreds of millions of fans globally. Former members Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Steve Gaines, Ed King, Billy Powell, Bob Burns, and Leon Wilkeson alongside others will forever remain significant contributors to this indelible repertoire and the band’s colorful history.

Today, Lynyrd Skynyrd rocks on with a current line-up featuring Johnny Van Zant, Rickey Medlocke, Damon Johnson, Mark “Sparky” Matejka, Michael Cartellone, Keith Christopher, Peter Keys, Carol Chase and Stacy Michelle.

It’s about the legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and what it stands for, what the fans are all about. There’s nothing like getting out there playing a great show with Skynyrd and seeing people love this music.

    Van Zant

With a catalog of over 60 albums, billions of streams, and tens of millions of records sold, Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Lynyrd Skynyrd remains a cultural icon that appeals to all generations.

The artist pre-sale begins on Tuesday, October 31 at 10 AM, and will be available until 10 PM on Thursday, November 2. The public on-sale begins at 10 AM on Friday, November 3. For tickets, and select VIP packages, visit here.

  • Armani Caesar Shines as First Lady of Griselda

The reach of Griselda Records remains immeasurable. From murals translated across continents to ritualistic celebrations in concert, people appreciate those who stamp their legacy in a way that could never be replicated.

    The Liz by Armani Caesar

Griselda grew organically and through a brilliant scheme devised by Westside Gunn. Armani Caesar, first lady of Griselda, serves as a cornerstone to their rise and continual ascension.

    Buffalo: the Queen City

Armani Caesar often embodies the lavish aesthetic. Her mixtapes consistently revolve around street couture. Mixtapes named after Liz Claiborne, Miss Elizabeth [WWE] and Elizabeth Taylor showcase the lane and luxurious vibes she provides. She dropped out of college the minute she learned how to sell Iceberg and other apparel items discussed in Marketing class at North Carolina Central University. “Hip-Hop in Context 1973-1997” taught by Kid N Play and 9th Wonder at this HBCU changed Armani’s perspective immensely.

Armani Caesar poses beneath spiral stairs while donning a ‘Buffalo Kids’ necklace

This artist expresses herself in an uninhibited and nonchalant manner. Treating hip-hop as competition runs in the veins of any Griselda artist. Yet, Armani makes it seem like she only conquers hip-hop to generate an additional stream of income. That type of disposition adds to the overall appeal of the artist. Additionally, her fashion expertise continues to create many satisfied customers at Armani’s Closet.

    Producer Over Consumer

With an entrepreneurial mindset – Armani remains steadfast in all of her endeavors. In 2020, she signed to Griselda and began to cement her legacy as the first lady on the roster. She joined GxFR during quite the pinnacle of musical production for her and her Griselda teammates. Upon rapping over a legendary DJ Premier beat, her abilities began to sharpen quickly.

    Liz 2 by Armani Caesar

The way that Westside Gunn reignites and branches individuals together proves why Griselda’s reach will stand the test of time for generations to come. The amount of individually talented people comprise quite the collective of ambitious people who push the genre forward. Armani Caesar could quite possibly be the flyest emcee of the bunch and will continue to elevate her skillset down the line.

AC could tour in 2024 so make sure you stay tuned to see where she might perform.

San Holo stage presence invites an innovative take towards weaving personal journey through a live show experience. He is constantly running around stage, creating beats from scratch and layering on top of his guitar riffs. He utilizes his punk and alt-rock roots in adding a seamless grunge aspect to his music.

This musician’s concert performance is nothing short of an emotional experience. All of the colorful imagery, projections, and use of a huge curtain captured the navigation through life’s highs and lows. His opening montage utilized a curtain that projected symbols depicting the turbulences that life takes us through. With the drop of the curtain, San Holo stood invoking the audience on a journey.

San Holo mostly played songs off of his recently released album EXISTENTIAL DANCE MUSIC. This included his hits “DON’T LOOK DOWN” and “…BRING BACK THE COLOR.” His artistry shines through his candid songwriting and ability to translate that effortlessly on stage.

This night in Buffalo forged room for an intimate connection with fans. This is especially so when he performed his fan favorite song “LIGHT.” The crowd appeared mesmerized and connected throughout. • Chris Stapleton To Continue “All-American Road Show” With Stop in Darien Center in July

Chris Stapleton will continue his extensive “All-American Road Show” tour through next summer including one confirmed show in Darien Center, while teasing his newest album set to release November 10.

The upcoming performances add to yet another landmark year for the 8x Grammy, 15x CMA and 15x ACM Award-winner, who will release his highly anticipated new album, Higher, November 10.

Already receiving critical attention, Stapleton has unveiled three album tracks ahead of the release: “It Takes A Woman,” “Think I’m In Love With You” and “White Horse,” of which Billboard praised “a hell-raising anthem, meant to be blared with windows down and enjoyed with ears ringing. ‘White Horse’ finds Stapleton pairing an outlaw swagger with some heaven-scraping vocals, going for the gusto throughout the chorus to try and match the guitar snarl.”

Additionally, Stapleton is nominated for three more awards at this year’s 57th Annual CMA Awards: Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and Musical Event of the Year (“We Don’t Fight Anymore” with Carly Pearce). The awards ceremony will be broadcast live from Nashville on ABC Wednesday, November 8 at 8:00pm ET/7:00pm CT.

Alongside Stapleton (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, slide electric guitar), the new album features Cobb (acoustic guitar, eclectic guitar), J.T. Cure (bass), Paul Franklin (pedal steel), Derek Mixon (drums), Morgane (background vocals, synthesizer, tambourine) and Lee Pardini (organ, piano).

  • Nickel Creek 2024 Tour To Stop in Rochester, Troy, Buffalo

Grammy Award-winning trio, Nickel Creek—mandolinist Chris Thile, violinist Sara Watkins and guitarist Sean Watkins—will continue their extensive headline tour next year including newly confirmed shows in Rochester, Troy, and Buffalo.

After meeting as young children in California’s That Pizza Place, and subsequently earning the respect of the bluegrass circuit for a decade, the trio signed with venerable label, Sugar Hill Records, in 2000 and quickly broke through with their Grammy-nominated, Alison Krauss-produced self-titled LP. Since that effort, the trio has released three more studio albums to date: 2002’s This Side, which won Best Contemporary Folk Album at the 45th Grammy Awards, 2005’s Why Should the Fire Die? and 2014’s A Dotted Line

Each member of Nickel Creek has also taken part in many outside projects over the years. Chris Thile is a 2012 recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and served as the host of the American radio variety show “Live from Here” (formerly “A Prairie Home Companion”) from 2016 to 2020. He has also released collaborative albums with world-renowned musicians like Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Brad Mehldau and Stuart Duncan as well as six studio albums with his Grammy-winning band, Punch Brothers. Sean Watkins is a co-founder of Watkins Family Hour alongside Sara, who has released three albums and maintains a long-running collaborative show in Los Angeles. Sean has also released a string of solo albums, while Sara’s extracurricular projects include the aforementioned Watkins Family Hour, as well as the Grammy-winning roots trio, I’m With Her, which she co-founded alongside Aoife O’Donovan and Sarah Jarosz. Sara Jarosz has released four studio albums and has contributed fiddle to recordings for artists like Phoebe Bridgers, The Killers, and John Mayer.

Even stronger when together, Nickel Creek revolutionized bluegrass and folk in the early 2000s and ushered in a new era of what we now recognize as Americana music. In a 2020 retrospective entitled, “The Year Folk Broke: How Nickel Creek Made Americana The New Indie Rock,” NPR Music praised, “20 years ago this month, an album arrived that seemed to speak all these languages at once: unafraid to push the boundaries of its primary genre, and packing the musical chops to bring such an eclectic vision to life. Behind it were three musicians just barely old enough to vote” and continued, “That makes Nickel Creek and its unofficial debut a critical point along a storied timeline, one whose innovations offer countless connections between the genre’s origins and its future. Once dubbed ‘progressive newgrassers,’ the three musicians now fit firmly within the ranks of Americana music—however nebulous, layered and diverse that realm may be. They have only themselves to thank.”

The upcoming shows add to a landmark year for the group, who released Celebrants—their fifth studio album and first release in nine years—this past spring via Thirty Tigers. Additionally, Nickel Creek recently received the Lifetime Achievement Trailblazer Award at the 2023 Americana Music Association Honors & Awards and performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “CBS Saturday Morning” earlier this year.

Recorded at Nashville’s RCA Studio A, the album was produced by longtime collaborator Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Grace Potter, Weezer) and features Mike Elizondo on bass. Reflecting on the project, the band shares, “This is a record about embracing the friction inherent in real human connection. We begin the record yearning for and pursuing harmonious connection. We end the record having realized that truly harmonious connection can only be achieved through the dissonance that we’ve spent our entire adult lives trying to avoid.”

  • In Focus: Melvin Seals & JGB help celebrate 10 years of Buffalo Iron Works

On October 19, Buffalo Iron Works celebrated ten years with a performance by Melvin Seals & JGB. As the evening began with a line of anxious fans awaiting to be let into the building, you could feel the energy in the air. The building filled in quickly for what had to be a capacity show.

As the house lights went down, the crowd grew eager waiting to catch the first glimpse of the band. One by one each band members – Melvin Seals, John Kadlecik, Ron Holloway, John-Pual McLean, Peter Lavezzoli – made their way up the side stage stairs and onto the stage under thunderous applause and cheers. When the first note hit the air, the crowd moved in delight with a smile on nearly every face. Each song during the night was masterfully done. Each jam taken to a new level. And every member of the band was right where they needed to be all night long.

The night could not have been any better with the two stellar sets of music brought curtesy of Melvin Seals & JGB. This was not their first time playing Buffalo Iron Works, and definitely should not be their last. As many in attendance would agree.
