  • Blanket Approval “Happy Alone Tour” this Summer to Visit Albany, Pleasantville, NYC

Blanket Approval, an indie pop rock band out of NYC, is stopping in three NY destinations, Albany, Pleasantville, and NYC for its “Happy Alone Tour” this summer. A fourth destination in NY may be possible, but it has yet to be determined. This coincides with the release of their new single “Happy Alone, Pt. II.”

“Born out of the ashes of the pandemic,” Blanket Approval began to form when singer/guitarist Jack Matteucci moved to Brooklyn in 2021 and met drummer Joey Hadden. From there, they met bassist Max Mena and guitarist/keyboardist Rahul Chakraborty. Blanket Approval began rehearsing and recording in January 2022.

They had their live debut at Union Pool in Brooklyn in Spring 2022, going on to 200,000 streams on Spotify in less than 8 months, and featuring in Spotify’s Fresh Finds Indie. In 2023, they plan to release a summer EP.

Blanket Approval’s new single “Happy Alone Part II” builds from a calm, chill opening to powerful harmonies with many of the band’s members and swelling music. Chakraborty’s keyboards, which open the song and carry on throughout the piece give the song a nice echoing beat throughout.

A personal favorite part of the song are the little crescendos, which often occur after the many vocal solos of the “Happy Alone Part II,” a feature fitting given the name. The pause in the instrumentals before these provides a brief return to the more cool opening of the song before returning with the explosive clamor of the instrumentals.

    Upcoming Happy Alone Tour Dates

    Albany, NY – June 30

    Greenfield, MA – July 1

    Pleasantville, NY – July 2

    Boston, MA – July 3

    Burlington, VT – July 5

TBD Upstate NY, VT, NH – July 6

    Randolph, VT – July 7

    Southbridge, MA – July 8

  • Les Claypool Brings His Fearless Flying Frog Brigade to The Capitol Theatre

On Friday, June 23, Les Claypool performed with his Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, a talented band featuring Sean Lennon on guitar, Harry Waters on keys, Paolo Baldi on drums, Skerik on saxophone, and Mike Dillon on percussion. They are playing a massive tour including the Peach Music Festival this coming weekend.

Neal Francis opened up the show with a funky set full of catchy riffs and exceptional vocal work. This proved to be much lighter to the heavier, bass rich riffs of Les Claypool. It fit well as an opening act but the music was truly different.

Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade opened up their set with “Thela Hun Ginjeet”, a King Crimson cover, followed by a couple Les Claypool songs including one about mushrooms, a very trippy “Amanitas”.

This led to the band performing Pink Floyd’s iconic album Animals, a psychedelic and heavy album; quintessential of the dark 1977 Pink Floyd sound. This proved to be an incredible performance, close to the studio version with really great solos and vocals by both Sean Lennon & Les Claypool.

Afterwards, the band played “Precipitation” & “Cosmic Highway” to close out their set, quickly returning for a lengthy encore featuring “One Better” & “Whamola”.

Different shenanigans included Les Claypool playing a stand up bass with a bow, wearing a pig mask, and ultimately a disco ball helmet. This along with Claypool’s relaxed stage presence and banter, and of course virtuoso level musicianship resulted in an intensely fun and laid back Fearless Flying Frog Brigade show.

Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade – The Capitol Theatre – June 23, 2023

Setlist: Thela Hun Ginjeet, Rumble of the Diesel, Amanitas, Blood and Rockets: Movement I, Saga of Jack Parsons – Movement II Too the Moon, Pink Floyd’s Animals, Pigs on the Wing, Part 1, Dogs, Pigs (Three Different Ones), Sheep, Pigs on the Wing, Part 2, Precipitation, David Makalaster, David Makalaster II, Cosmic Highway

    Encore: One Better, Whamola

  • Pink Talking Fish Celebrate 10 Year Anniversary With East Coast Fall Tour and “This Must be the Cirque”

Pink Talking Fish is hitting the ground running this summer as they celebrate their 10 year anniversary with over twenty shows, three of which will be performed on various stages across New York State.

The Hybrid Tribute Fusion Act spent the first half of 2023 honoring multiple album and concert anniversary’s for the three bands they admire most: Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, and Phish. They celebrated Pink Floyd’s staple album “Dark Side Of The Moon” in light of its 50th anniversary by playing it through each night they performed. In addition to that specific album, they included Talking Heads’ “Stop Making Sense” in homage of the 40 years that have passed since the Talking Heads’ concert film that took fans by storm in 1984.

Throughout this summer and into the fall, however, the band will be commemorating their own success and longevity through concerts, festivals, and other events. To kick off the summer of celebration and music, Pink Talking Fish will play a Dead & Company afterparty in Saratoga Springs where they will sprinkle in songs by Grateful Dead throughout their own setlist. Other highlights include a Southeast run, a Halloween Weekend “Island Tour” in Rhode Island/Long Island, and a stacked festival season that includes performances in New Jersey, West Virginia, Ohio, Vermont, Kentucky, and Indiana.

The band doesn’t plan to stop there as they will be spending the 4th of July weekend giving their fans another high-energy, holiday weekend of music in New England. On July 1st, Pink Talking Fish will return to Portsmouth, NH on the outdoor stage of Cisco Brewers then continue forward by bringing the act back to Cape Cod for a two-night run at The Wellfleet Beachcomber.

To fully celebrate the completion of a 10 year run, the band will perform a special anniversary show in their hometown of Boston, Massachusetts at The Paradise. These are only a few of the events that Pink Talking Fish is looking forward to as they commemorate a decade of creating dream setlists and performing the music of three diverse and, to many, iconic bands in a new and fresh way.

Also announced is the Saturday, October 14th event “Pink Talking Fish Presents: The Must be the Cirque,” at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester.

This Must Be The Cirque, the follow-up to 2018’s critically-acclaimed Junta Circus transforms The Cap into a magical circus voyage set to the soundtrack of Pink Floyd, Talking Heads and Phish. PTF is teaming up with cirque troupe Modern Gypsies who has worked with Phish, String Cheese Incident and more to enhance the live music experience. Tickets available here

Designed by celebrated architect Thomas Lamb in 1926 and listed in The National Register of Historic Places, the 2,000-capacity theater, known as “the original rock palace,” has showcased legends such as Traffic, the Grateful Dead, Black Sabbath, Chuck Berry, David Bowie, Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, and The Rolling Stones.

In 2012, The Capitol Theatre underwent a major renovation under the guidance of music entrepreneur Peter Shapiro. Since then, it has been hailed as a true hub of culture & community in the northeast. Major performers including Bob Dylan, Phil Lesh, Ringo Starr, Joan Baez, Skrillex, Bonnie Raitt, Snoop Dogg, Kacey Musgraves, The Strokes, Tom Petty, Cyndi Lauper, and Willie Nelson, as well as comedians like Kevin Hart and Amy Schumer.

The Capitol Theatre’s “venue within the venue” Garcia’s (created in partnership with Jerry Garcia’s family) will also celebrate its ten year anniversary this May. You can expect performances by an array of artists, and even a signature anniversary drink, the Cherry Jerry.

Attendees of the Dark Star Orchestra show will receive a Capitol Theatre “1000th show” button, marking another important milestone for the legendary venue.

Performing to critical acclaim for over 20 years and over 3000 shows, Dark Star Orchestra continues the Grateful Dead live concert experience. On any given night, the band will perform a show based on a set list from the Grateful Dead’s 30 years of extensive touring or use their catalog to program a unique set list for the show. By recreating set lists from the past, and by developing their own sets of Dead songs, Dark Star Orchestra offers a continually evolving artistic outlet within this musical canon. Honoring both the band and the fans, Dark Star Orchestra’s members seek out the unique style and sound of each era while simultaneously offering their own informed improvisations.

  • Garcia’s Celebrates 10 years Throughout May

Throughout the month of May, The Capitol Theatre’s ‘Inner Sanctum’ bar & venue Garcia’s celebrates 10 years, with a month long lineup of live performances by local and nationally touring artists.

Created in partnership with Jerry Garcia’s family, the official anniversary date falls on Tuesday, May 16, but music will be featured all month long, including SoulShine, Liquorcake, Gimme Gimme Disco and Brown Eyed Women.

Earlier in the month The Rock and Roll Playhouse performed the music of Dave Matthews Band as well as Jerry Garcia tribute Finders Keepers. Mihali performed on Friday, May 12, and will return on Sunday, May 14, with a show at Brooklyn Bowl in between on Saturday.

Garcia’s will also offer a signature anniversary drink all month, the Cherry Jerry, made with Spiced Rum, Cherry Dr Pepper, a splash of lime and of course a cherry on top!

Over the last ten years Garcia’s has presented an eclectic mix of exciting acts such as Dinosaur Jr., Black Pumas, Goose, Yola, Marcus King, Twiddle, Mihali, Melvin Seals, Warren Haynes, Orebolo, Keller Williams, Eric Krasno, Dopapod and many more. As a hub for the development of next generation artists, Garcia’s Talent Buyer & Manager Josh Cohen has booked emerging acts early on such as Daniel Donato, Eggy, Dogs In A Pile, TAZ, Mikaela Davis among others, that have now gone on to playing large scale venues across the country.

Previously the Marketing Director for B.B. King Blues Club, at Garcia’s, Cohen has been focused on nurturing & growing the inclusive environment that is so unique to the historic Capitol Theatre. He likens the venue to a majestic tree in the middle of a village where the locals congregate to dance and celebrate life:

When bands play Garcia’s, we see them summon the energies of The Capitol Theatre and find footing in the rich history of improvisational music and the community through which it lives on. The vibe you find when attending a Garcia’s show is that of an ever-growing, loving family who is eager to welcome new faces with open arms. Whether we come for the music and stay for the vibe or vice versa, we are together, listening to every note and dancing with delight.

    Josh Cohen – Garcia’s Manager

DeadCenter nights have also become a local fixture and staple of the venue, with local Grateful Dead tribute bands playing regularly like Stella Blue’s Band who have played the venue more than any other band, and are nearing their 100th show, 8Track, Dead Meat, Spadtastics, Deadgrass, Grateful BRO, Finders Keepersand SoulShine, an Allman Brothers Band tribute.
