  • The Paper Kites & The Roadhouse Band at Racket: A Halloween Special

On October 31, The Paper Kites and touring guest The Roadhouse Band performed together at New York City’s Racket. On their North American Tour, The Paper Kites are celebrating their new record At The Roadhouse, an artistic project birthed between the four walls of a dive bar in Australia that fans all across the world are holding close to their hearts today.

With the epitome of an autumnal sound combined with the holiday atmosphere, The Paper Kites pulled in the proper crowd: costume-enthusiast folk fanatics.

    Photograph by Shauna Hilferty

A crowd with creative costume ideas slowly filled the warehouse venue in the Meatpacking District. Spiderman, Peach and Mario, and plenty of Bob Dylan‘s mingled while awaiting the opening set. At 8:00 PM, The Cactus Blossoms casually strummed into their first song. With only an acoustic and an electric guitar paired with soothing vocals, the duo provided a warm opening performance. They expressed their gratitude to be on their first ever tour, and even more so they praised The Paper Kites for the opportunity and their musical influence.

    Photograph by Shauna Hilferty

Shortly after the Cactus Blossoms made their way off the stage, the stage crew decorated the space with an arsenal of instruments. True to The Paper Kites’ rich production value, each instrument that can be intentionally heard on their newest album was prepped and ready to be used on stage. Multiple forms of percussion, a collection of strings, an organ, electric keys, and the iconic vintage-looking microphone sat waiting to be given life.

Once their signature drapes were hung across the back of the stage, the lights dimmed and each band member made their way onto stage. Eight people on stage seemed like it would be tight, but the congealed bands stitched together comfortably, and so did their sound.

    Photograph by Shauna Hilferty

The traditional lead of an acoustic guitar through their melody was threaded with the most intentional additions of twangy strings of banjos and mandolins, the romantic hum of the organ, the tune of the harmonica, and the heartbeat of various drums. If there’s one thing The Paper Kites are, it is consistent – consistently impressive. With a memorable setlist it can become difficult to entertain returning fans, but The Paper Kites routinely delivers a unique listening experience that bends the confines of genre labels through experimentation and passion.

On stage stood eight music connoisseurs. Lead vocalist; Sam Bentley, on the guitar and the banjo; Dave Powys, on the pedal steel and guitar; Matt Dixon, on drums; Josh Bentley, on the bass; Sam Rasmussen, on the organ and percussion; Hannah Cameron, on strings and cowbell; Chris Panousakis, and the multi-instrumentalist and vocalist; Hadley Kennary.

    Photograph by Shauna Hilferty

From their last performance in New York City at Williamsburg Music Hall, their audience has grown – not just in size, but in comfortability. Throughout the show, fans openly conversed with each other and the band members in a respectful manner. Cooing that the song being performed was the song that was playing when they met the love of their life, or politely begging for their favorite oldies to be played. The Paper Kites’s lead vocalist, Sam Bentley, joked and reminisced with the audience all evening. It was truly refreshing, especially for a typically quiet audience.

    Photograph by Shauna Hilferty

Midway through their performance, The Paper Kites quintuplet and The Roadhouse Band gathered around their signature microphone to sing a stripped version of the Kite’s hit “Bloom” from their oldest record “Woodland.” This is a treasured moment during a Paper Kites performance. Their sound becomes almost tangible in the room, with raw harmonies and only root instrumentals. A wash of peace laid over the audience, for their attention was devoted to the intimate production happening on stage.

    Photograph by Shauna Hilferty

An applause full of raised hands in praise and hollers from the chest lasted for over a minute. Smiles overtook The Paper Kites’ faces as they made room once more for The Roadhouse Band. Each of the string players made the swap for more bassy instruments as Sam Bentley edged, “Now this is the part of the set where we play some louder songs.” As soon as the first chord of Dave Powys’ electric guitar ripped, the strobe lights were released into motion across the faces in the crowd.

    Photograph by Shauna Hilferty

One of their new songs, “Black & Thunder,” was a crowd favorite. The soulful riffs and plunge of the bass emitted a similar sound to that of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon.” On stage the band members tapped their feet to the beat and visibly felt the command of their instruments, as they swayed and jolted their shoulders.

    Photograph by Shauna Hilferty

After a few songs, they returned home to their usual earthy gentle tone to close out the show. They sang songs from their record “On The Train Ride Home” that references New York City, which spoke to the audience on personal levels. Tears streamed down the faces of some while smiles stretched across the faces of others. Underneath the lights, a world was formed – a small culmination of vast lives all affected by the same poetry.

The Paper Kites finished out their Halloween performance with an encore, singing some oldies that were wished for to send off the audience with a memorable evening. Once the lights came on, The Paper Kites and The Roadhouse Band said their thanks and bid their farewells to their New York City crowd.

  • Polyphia Shreds with Sold Out Show at Terminal 5 NYC

Acclaimed instrumental progressive rock band, Polyphia, played a sold-out show at Terminal 5 in New York City last week (October 26, 2023) with support from Domi and JD Beck.

Jazz duo Domi and JD Beck opened the show, with keyboardist Domi Louna and drummer JD Beck delivering a very impressive and lengthy set. Their songs featured highly technical drum patterns and keys. They joked between songs about the quality of their performance, taking jabs at their own skills, which the audience rewarded with big laughs and applause. They played in a fully packed venue and thanked the crowd for showing up early for the set. They left the stage with big applause and a heightened anticipation of the headlining act.

After some brief intro music, Terminal 5 erupted in applause as blinding lights flashed, welcoming Polyphia to the stage. Guitarists and founders Tim Henson and Scott LePage are widely considered to be two of the most influential rock guitarists of today, and they are both Ibanez-endorsed artists with several signature guitars of their own. One of their biggest singles, “Playing God,” has garnered over 30 million views on YouTube. The platform was their initial proving ground when one of their earliest singles, “Impassion,” launched them into fame.

Their set at Terminal 5 included tracks from throughout their four-album catalog. For their encore, they played fan favorites, “Playing God” and “G.O.A.T.” They didn’t speak directly to the crowd at any point in the show, as they didn’t have microphones. But they held their guitars aloft in thanks at the end of the show and walked off with wide smiles on their faces. The crowd cheered them out and left more than satisfied.

You can listen to their latest album here and you can see their upcoming tour dates here. Check out Domi and JD Beck’s music here.

  • Foo Fighters Play Heartfelt, Star-Studded Set on Saturday Night Live

Foo Fighters played an emotional performance on Saturday Night Live (SNL), alongside host Nate Bergatze and surprise guests H.E.R. and Christopher Walken. The appearance was their first SNL showing since the tragic death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in March of 2022.

    Foo Fighters Saturday Night Live

The group first played their track “Rescued,” introduced by actor Christopher Walken. Walken recreated his former pronunciation of the band’s name, as a reference to their 2003 pairing on Saturday Night Live where he recited, “Foo FIGHTERS.” The Fighters delivered an electric performance of “Rescued,” complete with vocalist Dave Grohl’s headbanging.

Foo Fighters followed up with a performance of “The Glass,” accompanied by special guest H.E.R. The collaborative rendition began with an emotional Dave Grohl, reminding the audience of the band’s great loss of Taylor Hawkins last year. The emotion was not to the performance’s detriment, as H.E.R lended stunning vocals and guitar alongside Grohl.

  • Cat Power To Play Carnegie Hall, Honor Bob Dylan

Singer-songwriter Cat Power has announced a special Carnegie Hall Valentine’s Day performance, recreating Bob Dylan’s iconic performance at the Royal Albert Hall.

The show will feature a 15-song recreation of Dylan’s set, and will be released as a companion to her album, Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert to be released on November 10.

    Cat Power

In addition to announcing her Dylan tribute set, Power released two singles from her upcoming album. “Mr Tambourine Man” and “Like A Rolling Stone,” both live Dylan covers, honor the legendary folk musician with Power’s distinct flair.

I had and still have such respect for the man who crafted so many songs that helped develop conscious thinking in millions of people, helped shape the way they see the world. So even though my hands were shaking so much I had to keep them in my pockets, I felt real dignity for myself. It felt like a real honor for me to stand there.

    Chan Marshall (Cat Power)

Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert is a recording of a live tribute show, based on Bob Dylan’s May 1966 show at Manchester Free Trade Hall. The show was put down in history as the Royal Albert Hall Concert due to a mislabeled bootleg. Dylan’s famous set featured a mid-show switch from acoustic to electric, which Power will duly recreate.

Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert

Cat Power, offstage known as Chan Marshall, will embark on a four-date tour honoring Bob Dylan and celebrating her new album. She will make two sold-out stops at West Hollywood’s The Troubadour, and one at Los Angeles’ Palace Theatre, following up with a Valentine’s Day performance at New York City’s Carnegie Hall.

Tickets for Cat Power on February 14th show at Carnegie Hall will go on sale October 27 at 11AM ET.

My Morning Jacket kicked off their 3-night run at The Beacon Theatre with a bang, playing their album It Still Moves in its entirety to the sold out crowd. A real treat for fans, the band returned for a 7-song encore, starting with Jim James solo on “I Needed It Most”, played for the first time since 2018.

The encore included a live debut of “Grab a Body” as well as “Feel You,” “It Beats 4 U,” and “Phone Went West” to close out the night. James spoke about how blessed we are to be in such a beautiful place that is the Beacon Theatre.

Friday night of My Morning Jacket at the Beacon Theatre started off with a full version of “Cobra,” clocking in at almost 17 minutes. The setlist that followed captivated the sold-out crowd from start to finish, with stand out songs including “O is the One That Is Real,” “Strangulation,“ and “Victory Dance.”

They returned to the stage for a 6-song encore with opener Madi Diaz joining Jim James and company to perform “The Wind” by Cat Stevens. The highlight of the encore was “Highly Suspicious,” off their 2008 album Evil Urges.

  • Everyday Is Like ‘SATURDAY’ – Night 1 of Morrissey at United Palace

Originally scheduled to kick-off in Mexico City on September 10, the rescheduled “40 Years of Morrissey” tour rebooted in Orlando, Florida earlier this month after the British crooner and former frontman of the Smiths had fully recovered from some recent health concerns.

United Palace | Photo Credit: Michael Dinger

After sweeping through Georgia, Tennessee and Washington, D.C., the United Palace – a lavish theater nestled in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan – welcomed Morrissey (affectionately dubbed “Moz” by Smiths bandmate Johnny Marr) this past Saturday night, October 21, for the first of four shows in a brief residency.

Constructed in 1930, United Palace occupies a full city block and functions not only as a nonprofit performing arts center that has hosted artists the likes of Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Adele, Arcade Fire and Kraftwerk, but also as a spiritual center. You may have also seen the epochal venue as a backdrop for the film John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and in the Hulu television series Only Murders in the Building.

With showtime looming, latecomers entered the majestic theater from Broadway on a chilly autumn evening and into the grand foyer, many ‘blown away’ (as I was) by the sheer grandeur of the scene. At half past eight o’clock, a pair of square-shaped, side-by-side video screens suddenly came to life and for the next 30-minutes, displayed a barrage of images and video clips featuring actors and musicians who have inspired Morrissey over the years, including Roxy Music, David Bowie, Eddie Cochran and Sidney Poitier. The biggest reaction from the audience occurred when the breakthrough video of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” featuring the iconic, closeup visage of the late Sinéad O’Connor, appeared wondrously.

Morrissey | Photo Credit: Michael Dinger

At 9:10 pm, as the house lights went down, the crowd literally jumped out of their seats and erupted with rapturous applause. It was officially “Game On!” The perpetually suave Morrissey elegantly took the stage, dressed in black from head to toe, as he and his talented quintet of back-up musicians instantly transported us to 1992 with “We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful” (Your Arsenal). Over the course of nearly 90-minutes, Morrissey gifted his legion of die-hard fans an eclectic set that incorporated a glorious blend of five tracks from his days with The Smiths, highlighted by “How Soon Is Now?,” the beginning of which signaled the simultaneously raising of cell phones high into the air to forever record the moment into eternity.

Morrissey | Photo Credit: Michael Dinger

The remainder of the nineteen-song set comprised tunes lifted from an extensive discography spanning Morrissey’s debut solo studio album released in 1988 (Viva Hate) to his upcoming studio album entitled Without Music the World Dies, with a tentative release date of later this year. As the night turned for home, Morrissey presented “Sure Enough, the Telephone Rings,” recorded in early-2021 and originally intended to appear on the studio album entitled Bonfire Of Teenagers – but will not be released by Capitol Records, the label Morrissey departed acrimoniously and who are now holding onto the album’s rights (at least for the time being). Morrissey and his signature baritone voice, in top form all night, exquisitely delivered the critically acclaimed “Everyday Is Like Sunday,” written shortly after the Smiths break-up, and yet another goosebump inducing moment.

Morrissey | Photo Credit: Michael Dinger

Returning to the stage after a several minute interlude, each band member – Jesse Tobias (lead guitar), Carmen Vandenberg (rhythm guitar), Juan Galeano Toro (bass), Camila Grey (keyboards) and Brendan Buckley (drums) – took a moment center stage at the mic to say a few words (entirely in Español), thanking all of us for being there. Waiting in the wings, Morrissey was now rocking his own T-shirt merch which featured the likeness of Billy Halop, an American actor from Queens who rose to fame in the 1930s. As the encore performance of “Speedway” (Vauxhall and I, 1994) neared its climax, Morrissey shed his shirt and tossed it to a lucky fan, exiting the stage bare-chested to a sustained ovation from the 3,500 capacity crowd that never sat down all night long. As I filed out of United Palace within a throng of highly satisfied patrons and into the chilly October night, I was already thinking about what special surprises lie in store for the next three residency gigs.

Following the final night of the U.S. tour leg at United Palace on October 25, Morrissey’s global trek will resume on November 9 in Singapore, followed by shows in Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Australia and Auckland, New Zealand on December 14. Morrissey will then take some well-deserved time off until early-February, at which time he will play the rescheduled Mexico City show on February 3, 2024, followed by South American dates culminating in Brazil on February 24.

Watch Moz’s Saturday night performance of “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want,” recorded by the Smiths and released in 1984 as the B-side of the single “William, It Was Really Nothing,” below:

  • Margaret Glaspy Shines Bright at Bowery Ballroom

On yet another rainy night in New York City, the elusive Margaret Glaspy performed at The Bowery Ballroom on the Lower East Side.

The last time she played the exact same venue in 2017 I couldn’t attend the show and she has not been back since, so needless to say I was very excited.

Her most recent album Echo The Diamond came out mid-August of this year and she spent September opening up for Canadian band Half Moon Run – whose album release show NYS Music covered in June – then started her proper North American headline tour which will end November 14 in Los Angeles.

On stage was Margaret with her signature Fender Electric, black leather pants, and the same see-through top with a black bra underneath that she had on the cover for Echo The Diamond. She talks to the crowd a lot, charming as ever, her vocals are sharp and hit the mark every time, mid-set the band leaves and she does a few numbers alone with just the guitar, and the room is silent. It’s not always that I’d consider the Bowery a listening room, but you could hear a pin drop.

Half the set was songs off her most recent release, with five additional songs from her debut. A nice highlight was an Alanis Morrissette cover of “You Learn” and closing the set with the encore of “Fruits of My Labor” by Lucinda Williams. Here’s to hoping she doesn’t wait another six years before coming back to the area.

Margaret Glaspy – Bowery Ballroom, NYC – October 20th, 2023

Setlist: I Didn’t Think So, Act Natural, Irish Goodbye, Female Brain, Memory Street, Hammer and the Nail, You and I, My Eyes, Heartbreak, Turn The Engine, Somebody to Anybody, Memories, Before We Were Together, You Learn (Alanis Morrissette cover), Parental Guidance, Emotions and Math, One Heart and Two Arms, I Let My Worst Get the Best of Me, Get Back
Encore: Fruits of My Labor (Lucinda Williams cover)

  • Bad Bunny Enlists Mick Jagger, Lady Gaga, Pedro Pascal on SNL

Reggaeton artist Bad Bunny made his third ever appearance on Saturday Night Live and first as host and musical guest, bringing along a few friends for sketches that were spoken in equal parts English and Spanish.

    bad bunny snl

Inviting out Pedro Pascal – who hosted SNL for the first time last year – in the monologue, Bad Bunny began the show saying “My name is Benito and I am very excited to be here on Sabado Gigante a nod to the long-running Univision Saturday night variety show. Bad Bunny took aim at the GRAMMY Awards in his monologue, opting for [Speaking Sexier Language] instead of [Speaking in non-English] when subtitles appeared, before Pascal translated for the audience into English, creating a bilingual monologue, with Bad Bunny offering hugs and kisses to his people in Puerto Rico to close.

A native of Almirante Sur, Puerto Rico, Bad Bunny referenced Puerto Rican and Spanish culture in sketches including “Rap Battle” with Bad Bunny as ‘Fuego,’ as a Spanish King in “The Age of Discovery” (featuring Fred Armisen) and “Telenovela” which featured an unexpected appearance from Mick Jagger.

Lady Gaga surprised fans when she introduced (in Spanish) Bad Bunny as musical guest who performed “Un Preview” in a white cloaked stage with only a coin operated horse ride moving to the beat.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkSnz-5C5C8

Featured player Marcello Hernández had ample air time for this episode, his Dominican/Cuban roots providing multiple opportunities to speak Spanish and reference Hispanic culture. In the sketch of the night, Bad Bunny dresses up as his tia and Pascal as his mother, Hernández parodied bringing a white girlfriend (new featured player Chloe Troast) home and the Spanglish conversations that ensued.

Bad Bunny’s second song “Monaco” from Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana began with two violinists before revealing a long dinner table with Bad Bunny in the center around masked dancers on each side.
