  • Jim Jones and Pusha T Officially Have Rap Beef, What Comes Next?

    In a year where hip hop is on a commercial downturn, it’s nice to see an essential part of the culture remains. This latest edition of rap beef kicked-off with Jim Jones challenging Pusha T’s validity among rap’s royalty on various hip hop platforms. However, it wasn’t Jones’ opinion on Pusha T that sparked the brouhaha, but rather his determined effort to make it seem like Pusha had little to no cultural relevance. With Jones saying, “Nobody has dressed like him. Nobody wants to be like Pusha T. I don’t remember nothing.”

    In turn, Pusha T’s expectedly cunning response created a moment on social media. In sinister tone and fashion, Push gave his reply at the Louis Vuitton fashion show, where record producer — and longtime Pusha T cohort — Pharell Williams debuted his collection as men’s creative director. With this intention, Pusha and his brother, No Malice, who make up Clipse, walked the runway in the show as their new track played. With the fabled duo sharing their first collaboration in 14 years.

    Pusha T Fires Back

    Although the diss-record was previewed inconspicuously, the public pieced together the Jim Jones disses within the track. Addressing Jones’ comments, Push raps, “beware of my name, that there’s delegate/ You know I know where you’re delicate/ Crush you to pieces, I’ll hum a breath of it…I’m watching your fame escape relevance/ We all in a room but here’s the elephant/ You chasing a feature out of your element.”

    By the same token, Push continuously attacks Jim for his own public financial troubles, while reminding of his own mercurial standing within his circle.

    “And those lab diamonds under inspection/ The question marks block your blessings/ It’s no tombstones in the desert/ I know by now you get the message,” he goes on to say. 

    All in all, it was a masterful move by Push to withhold his reply until the time was right. Despite Jim Jones’ assertion that Pusha T held little relevance musically, here he is walking in a fashion show for one of the world’s preeminent brands to his own record, while A-list stars like Jay-Z and Beyoncé were seen boppin’ to the song in the crowd. Jones gave an instant reply on social media, although his perceived carefree attitude did little to sway fans, Jones needed to reply with bars and couldn’t finesse his way out of this one.

    Bomb First, Jim Jones Replies

    To Jim Jones’ credit, he did reply, albeit with a stellar yet not quite up-to-snuff effort when compared to his adversary. His “Summer Collection, From The Block” video performance saw the Dipset rapper try his hand at Pusha T’s beat. Altogether, Jim held his own with his brand of witty wordplay and street tales, however his flow and presence on the record failed to match Pusha T’s output. That is to say nothing of Jim’s own lyrical expertise as he had his own ammo for Push. Namely, attacking his street cred and claiming that he knew little of the drug dealing he rapped about and for his association with Ye, who helped Pusha launch his solo career on his Good Music label. But nonetheless, it seemed a mistake to rap over a beat that was curated specifically for Pusha and No Malice.

    “These two roach niggas don’t know what to do in no raid/ Kanye gave you whips, but that’s what they do to the slaves/ you tryna act bad, but we ain’t doin’ charades/ I really have bombs on the block just like I threw a grenade.”

    Jim Jones might have felt similar sentiments as he continued to hop on airwaves and diminish Pusha’s efforts. The one they call Capo phoned in to the Joe Budden Podcast and share more colorful sentiments about this battle. Namely, called Pusha T’s diss-track “cute” and claimed that things might get violent if Pusha goes to similar extents as he did in his beef with Drake. With Capo hilariously quipping “whose going to spin the block for him, Pharrell?”

    What Comes Next?

    Hopefully more music. Although with Push leading the vote in public opinion, Jim may need to double-down on his attacks to get ahead of things, but would he want to poke to proverbial bear? As things stand, what else can Jim Jones say as it relates to Pusha T? Despite his best efforts, the “Diet Coke” MC remains in the upper echelon of rappers. Altogether, Push has tallied an impressive resume, with platinum-selling albums as a member of the Clipse and as a solo artist. His last two albums, 2018’s DAYTONA and 2022’s It’s Almost Dry got him Grammy nominations and he is still one of the only artists that can snag a Jay – Z feature.

    All things considered, Jims’s best bet is to throw a few haymakers and hope his witty-ness is able to catch the public’s ears, basically play the social media battle. Pusha T, meanwhile, seems to be more patient and isn’t as keen to respond through the media. After all, he knows he has the advantage lyrically. Moreover, his abrupt releases and ability to find his opponents hidden skeletons seems to leave foes on edge.


  • The Zombies Stop At Adler Hall As Part Of Upcoming Tour

    Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees The Zombies will perform in Adler Hall at New York Society for Ethical Culture in NYC on October 27. The stop comes as the group celebrates their long awaited album Different Game which was released earlier this year.

    The Zombies are one of the most iconic bands in Rock & Roll history. The group came together in 1961 and grew in large part because of their role in the British Invasion. The Zombies have fostered a massive fan base throughout the years due to their unmistakable melodies, breathy vocals, and elegant harmonies. 

    In 1967 the band found worldwide success after their song “Time of the Season” reached #3 on the Billboard charts. The song would go onto be one of the most recognizable tracks of the 60s. It has since appeared throughout pop-culture, featuring in hit TV shows like “Friends” and “NCIS”.

    Rolling Stone has named The Zombies’ 1968 album Odyssey and Oracle to the “Greatest Albums of All Time” list twice. In total the band has released nine albums and has established itself as one of the most influential groups in music.

  • Wallice Returns to Rock Bowery Ballroom

    Wallice, the rising indie-pop sensation, graced the stage at Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan on June 27th, captivating the crowd with her infectious melodies and magnetic presence. This performance marked her triumphant return to NYC (and Bowery Ballroom) after her opening act with JAWNY last March.

    With her irresistible charm and undeniable talent, Wallice delivered a performance that was nothing short of electric. Sharing the spotlight was the indie rock boy band Nitefire, whose infectious energy and captivating melodies set the perfect tone for the evening.

    As the lights dimmed and the first chords resonated through the venue, it was evident that this would be a night to remember. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as fans eagerly embraced the fusion of Wallice’s honest lyrics, vulnerability, and witty storytelling. With each song, she effortlessly transported the audience into her world, exploring themes of love, self-discovery, and the rollercoaster of emotions that come with growing up. The synergy between Wallice and Nitefire created a dynamic and unforgettable concert experience, leaving the crowd craving for more.

    Nitefire,the dynamic musical project of Nico Geyer and Luke White, boldly defines themselves as the “budget Wallows.” Blending the pop sensibilities of turn-of-the-century indie rock with the vibrant sonics and youthful spirit of Brit-pop, Nitefire fearlessly carves out a lane that is uniquely their own, leaving nostalgia behind. With their roots embedded in the thriving Los Angeles music scene, the band has gained recognition for their DIY approach, hosting their own events and shows that embrace an “if you build it, they will come” mentality, diverging from the digital-dominated landscape of today. Nitefire’s sound and attitude are entirely their own as they carve out a distinct lane.     Nitefire’s opening performance was an electrifying display of energy and connection. Despite a minor setback earlier in the day, with Luke breaking his pinky, the band turned it into a playful guessing game during their set. Nico, the charismatic frontman, challenged the crowd to speculate on the cause of Luke’s injury, teasing them with the statement, “You’ll literally never guess.” Hilarious suggestions of door-related incidents were quickly debunked, fueling the curiosity of the fans. To their surprise, it was revealed that the pinky was actually broken in a Frisbee accident, leaving many scratching their heads and engaging in animated discussions.

    Nico’s crowd interaction was a highlight, as he jumped into the crowd multiple times with guitar and mic in hand, creating a central pit of excitement. One fan attempted to converse with Nico in French, only to be misheard, prompting Nico to ask if she was speaking Spanish instead. The lighthearted exchange drew laughter and further showcased the band’s down-to-earth and approachable nature. The finale saw Nico leaning back into the crowd, crowd surfing during the last song, “Saturday.” Nitefire’s performance was a thrilling and engaging experience, leaving fans captivated by their boundless energy and genuine connection.

  • Hilltop Announces 2023 Summer Tour, Mercury Lounge August 3rd

    Albany’s rising jam group Hilltop have unveiled their 2023 Summer Tour, taking them across New York, plus festival stops in Pennslyvania and the Catskills and a post Phish show in NYC.

    Among the dates is a first ever show for Hilltop at Mercury Lounge in Manhattan, on August 3rd. During a non-consecutive 7-night run for Phish at Madison Square Garden, Hilltop jumps on an opportunity to play on one of the few nights off for Phish, bringing Thursday night funk to those looking to keep boogieing down in between Phish shows.

    Joining Hilltop at Mercury Lounge will be Whaley + Ernie & The Band opening the night.

  • City of the Sun Announces Summer Residency at (Le) Poisson Rouge

    (Le) Poisson Rouge will present a four-night residency with New York City-based powerhouse experimental music band City of the Sun, starting on June 28.

    For over 10 years, City of the Sun has been flipping the perception of what instrumental music is, attracting a new generation to the genre. Formed in 2011 by guitarist John Pita and percussionist Zach Para, the band takes influence from genres like American folk, indie rock, blues, and flamenco, creating an otherworldly and cinematic experience.

    City of the Sun has been established as a powerhouse group in the post-rock sphere. Their UNTITLED EP in 2018 featured the critically acclaimed track “Perfect Instance,” leading them to release their self-titled album, also to huge praise. Their newest album Segunda Alma sees the group expanding on their experimental roots, mixing in organic house elements and other arrangements.

  • Wednesday I’m In Love: Night 2 Of The Cure’s MSG Residency

    The definitive band of the gothic rock genre – The Cure – swept through Midtown Manhattan this past week for a three-date residency at Madison Square Garden (MSG).

    Selling out arena after arena on the North American leg of their Songs of a Lost World Tour, a 34-date affair that the band embarked on in New Orleans, Louisiana back on May 10, The Cure have long since secured their legacy due to being one of the first alternative bands to break into the mainstream well over four decades ago. And as luck would have it, I found myself fortunate to provide coverage of The Cure’s second show in The Big Apple this past Wednesday evening, June 21.

    The only constant member throughout the band’s storied history that began in West Sussex, England in 1978, frontman Robert Smith has been teasing since March of last year that new material, the first since their 13th studio album (4:13 Dream) was released nearly fifteen years ago, is on its way. Although fans of The Cure are still waiting for a 14th release from their beloved post-punkers, they are certainly satisfied with the progress Smith has been forging on a different front. Outspoken against Ticketmaster and their dynamic pricing model that has ticket prices fluctuating based on demand, and often to exorbitant levels, Smith fought back and guaranteed that for The Cure’s tour, tickets were only allowed to be resold at face value. And in an unprecedented response to the good fight that Smith fought for his fans, Ticketmaster issued partial refunds in mid-March to ticket holders for shows by The Cure to lessen the burden of add-on fees. Even The Cure’s tour merch was affordable, with t-shirts selling for only $25!

    Accompanying The Cure on all their US and Canadian dates are The Twilight Sad, a post-punk/indie rock quintet formed just outside of Glasgow, Scotland by vocalist James Graham and guitarist Andy MacFarlane as high school friends in 2003. The Twilight Sad and The Cure are no strangers to one another, as Smith handpicked the Scottish outfit to support The Cure back in 2016, which also included three shows at Madison Square Garden. The Twilight Sad are rounded out by Johnny Docherty (bass), Grant Hutchison (drums) and Brendan Smith (keyboards).

    The 40-minute set kicked-off sharply at 8:00 pm with intensely thumping bass, before giving way to driving guitar, and eventually Hutchison’s pounding drums that introduced “Kill It in the Morning,” taken from their third studio album (No One Can Ever Know, 2012). At the song’s conclusion, Graham genuinely thanked the audience for being there and explained how it was such an honor for a “small band from a small town in Scotland” to be playing The Garden in New York City.

    With flashing strobes offering short glimpses of each band member in otherwise green, red and blue lighting, I was immediately taken aback by the intensity of their performance, particularly that of Graham. As the band delivered “Let’s Get Lost” and “VTr,” two tracks from their most recent studio album It Won’t Be Like This All the Time released in 2019, and fifth overall, I was transfixed by his stage persona. Particularly fascinated by Graham’s sharp gesticulating and bizarre mannerisms, as if he were possessed at times, I knew then what it must have been like to have witnessed Ian Curtis (Joy Division) perform live in the late-1970s.

    The Twilight Sad’s emblematic depth and darkness, incorporating goth despair and 90s industrial with catchy synth and grinding guitar, was prevalent for the duration of their 8-song set. Although I was unfamiliar with The Twilight Sad before tonight, it was not very difficult to get swept up by the emotional highs and melancholic lows that songs like “That Summer, at Home I Had Become the Invisible Boy” – the band’s very first single from 2007 and a nod to the film Stand by Me – and 2014’s “There’s a Girl in the Corner” could transport a listener to. As their newest fan, I cannot wait to see what these Scottish lads have in store for us during the remainder of 2023, and beyond.

    While only a recent fan of The Twilight Sad, I have been listening to The Cure since I was 14-year old boy growing up in coastal Connecticut. I do not remember exactly who introduced me to this band at the forefront of the new wave movement in 1986, but I still have a copy of one of the first compact discs that I ever bought, Staring at the Sea, a greatest hits compilation of singles that marked a decade since the band was founded, and a magnificent sampling of ‘The Cure sound’ that I continue to love 37 years later.

    At approximately 9:15 pm, with the sound of rain and thunder playing over the house PA suddenly ceasing, the moment had arrived! One by one, the members of The Cure entered from stage left. The first was Jason Cooper who took to his stool behind the kit on an elevated riser at center stage. He was quickly followed by Reeves Gabrels (guitar), Roger O’Donnell (keyboards) and Perry Bamonte (guitar, keyboards) who assumed their respective positions as fans were going wild with excitement. Simon Gallup, a member of the band for all but three years of their history, strapped on his custom Schecter Ultra Spitfire bass as the entire arena held its collective breath until finally, Smith appeared from the dark shadows at the side of the stage.

    Clad in all black and donning a t-shirt depicting the famous Marilyn Monroe scene from the 1955 Billy Wilder film The Seven Year Itch, Smith wore his signature smeared red lipstick and black eyeliner as he internalized the grand spectacle that lie in front of him. For several moments, as his bandmates commenced the instrumental introduction to “Alone,” a new song that will be included on their yet to be released Songs Of The Lost World, Smith slowly walked from one end of the stage to the other, and back again. With clasped hands, he frequently paused at the edge of the stage apron as he gazed longingly into the upper levels of The Garden, a grateful expression across his face for the outpouring of support raining down on him.

    With everyone in the house standing, classic tune after classic tune would be the overriding theme of the evening. 1989’s Disintegration made a particularly strong showing with prodigious renderings of “Pictures of You,” “Lovesong” and “Fascination Street.” The live staple “Burn,” a contribution by The Cure to The Crow’s 1994 motion picture soundtrack, featured Smith playing the penny whistle during the song’s intro. The main set was bookended with another newly recorded song from Songs Of The Lost World titled “Endsong.”

    Beginning at 10:45 pm, the first of two glorious encores comprised of five songs ensued. Masters of the melodic and atmospheric, especially during their extended, trademark instrumental intros, “A Forest” closed the first encore, procured from their second studio album Seventeen Seconds released in 1980. Renowned for a catalog of introspective alternative hits that always make it into The Cure’s live agenda, the whopping nine song second encore did not disappoint, to say the least! As midnight approached on the first day of summer in Gotham, the 29-song marathon gig came to an end with a triple threat of the choicest songs – “In Between Days” (The Head on the Door, 1985), “Just Like Heaven” (Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, 1987) and “Boys Don’t Cry,” the title track from their first compilation released in 1980.

    Over the course of the following week, the 2019 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductees’ trek across North America will continue through Pennsylvania, Maryland, Georgia and Florida, with the tour finale slated for July 1 at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida. After a much needed respite for the duration of the summer, the English rockers will be back on the road beginning this fall, with a headlining appearance at Riot Fest in Chicago, Illinois (September 17), followed by another headlining gig at Festival Corona Capital in Mexico City (November 19). Their calendar remains full with six additional shows slated for late-November and early-December that will take The Cure to Peru, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Brazil, Paraguay and Columbia. And hopefully, not before too long, fans of The Cure will be treated to their first new music since 2008 with the arrival of Songs Of The Lost World in the coming months.

  • TKTS Celebrates 50th Anniversary in Times Square

    TKTS, which revolutionized same-day discount theatre tickets for Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, has announced it is celebrating its 50th anniversary in Times Square with special activities.

    The Theatre Development Fund’s TKTS will celebrate its golden anniversary behind the TKTS Booth on Broadway and 47th Street, in front of the red steps on June 28, starting at 11 a.m. The City of New York will present a proclamation to TDF which will be accepted by S. Epatha Merkerson, a two-time Tony Award nominee and beloved star of Law & Order and Chicago Med, along with other activities.

    The look of the TKTS Booth may have changed over the years, but what happens at it has not. For 50 years, TKTS has provided affordable tickets to people on a budget who would not be able to attend Broadway and Off Broadway any other way. Among the many things TKTS has done over the years is to build new audiences. More than 30% of folks who get tickets at TKTS have never been to a Broadway show before. We’re proud to be able to continue to be the entry point for millions of new theatregoers and grateful to have been of service to New Yorkers, tourists from all over the US and indeed the world.

    Operated by TDF, a not-for-profit service organization for the performing arts, TKTS Times Square opened for business on June 25, 1973, and quickly became a mecca for theatergoers from all over the world. Selling same-day discount tickets, the booth is one of New York City’s most photographed landmarks. The current booth, housed under red glass steps, opened in 2008 and has garnered more than a dozen international design awards.

    To date, TKTS has been responsible for 68.6 million admissions to thousands of Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, returning over $2.68 billion in revenue to those shows over the past half-century. The early supporters did not realize they were creating a phenomenon that would be replicated worldwide, and since then, booths have developed in Boston, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Denver, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Toronto, London, and Sydney.

    The celebration in Times Square features emcee Eric Ulloa, an actor, playwright, and TDF Wendy Wasserstein Project mentor, Broadway Inspirational Voices, who will perform a medley of songs from Broadway musicals of the past 50 years, arranged by the ensemble’s artistic director Allen René Louis, and a Broadway sing along with tunes played by Marie’s Crisis pianist Franca Vercelloni. There will also be TKTS gift certificate giveaways, TKTS trivia, and a roaming photo booth.

  • Raphael Saadiq And Tony! Toni! Toné! Stop At Radio City On New Tour

    Award-winning artist, writer, composer, and producer Raphael Saadiq recently revealed that he and Tony! Toni! Toné! would be returning to the Radio City Music Hall. The show is part of their new tour “Just Me & You”, which stops in New York on September 30.

    The Tony’s are known for being one of the most influential and successful R&B groups of all time. Composed of brothers Raphael Saadiq and D’wayne Wiggins and their cousin Timothy Christian Riley, the Tonys have been making music since 1986. 

    The group found massive success early on in their career with the album Who?, which landed on Billboard’s “Top Pop Albums” chart. Four songs off of the album reached the R&B Top 10, including the hit “Little Walter”. Their biggest success would come in the form of their second project, The Revival. The album spawned several hits, the most notable being “Feels Good” which made its way into the Top 10 of the “Hot 100”. 

    The group began to explore their own individual pursuits after their final album House Of Music in 1996. Saadiq became a much sought after producer and writer, helping to create hit songs for the likes of D’Angelo and The Roots. He also released several of his own albums, including Instant Vintage and Ray Ray

    Tony! Toni! Toné! are set to perform some of the biggest and most monumental songs. The tour will also feature some of Saadiq’s most popular work, including some of the tracks he helped to make for Daniel Caesar, Brent Faiyaz, and Beyonce. Click here for more details and tickets.

  • Kerry Washington to Visit the Bronx and Manhattan for Fall Book Tour

    As a part of her eight-city tour to support her upcoming memoir, “Thicker than Water,” Kerry Washington will be visiting the Bronx and Manhattan in NYC this September. The event will be an intimate evening with the award-winning actress, director, producer, and activist, spotlighting experiences both on and off-stage.

    Kerry Washington is an Emmy-winning, SAG, and Golden Globe-nominated native of the Bronx. She was widely recognized for her role as Olivia Pope on the hit ABC drama Scandal, the first black woman to headline a network TV drama since 1974. She is a lifelong advocate and activist, using her voice to fight for justice and transformational change.

    The tour kicks off in Washington’s hometown of the Bronx before moving to various locations across the United States and United Kingdom. Washington will disclose to audiences the behind the scenes of her life as an artist, an advocate, an entrepreneur, a mother, a daughter, a wife, and a Black woman. In addition, she will share the lessons she has learned for healing childhood wounds, how she embraces adversity, and the wisdom she has gained over her life.
