  • Cable Ties Announce Tour, Stops at Woodstock and NYC

Australian punk band Cable Ties are scheduled to embark on a North American tour, stopping at Colony Woodstock on Sept. 15 and the Bowery Ballroom in New York City on Sept. 16., in support of their new album All Her Plans, due for release on June 23.

    Cable Ties
The members of Cable Ties, from left to right: Jenny McKechnie (lead vocals and guitar), Nick Brown (bass), and Shauna Boyle (drums) Credit: Kalindy Williams.

Cable Ties are based in Melbourne and were formed in 2015 with Jenny McKechnie, Nick Brown, and Shauna Boyle. They released their self-titled debut album in 2017, and the forthcoming All Her Plans marks their studio release. A supporting single, “Time For You” is available now. All Her Plans has received considerable global praise from Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, NME, The Line of Best Fit, and Rolling Stone, to name a few. The album also marks the band’s first album since the pandemic began and their touring plans for 2020’s Far Enough were canceled.

“I found the idea of writing a new album a little terrifying after all our touring plans got canceled just after we released Far Enough in 2020,” McKechnie says. “It felt as though that album had been lost. I thought I needed to write another album like that again, which wouldn’t be lost. This of course wasn’t true. I needed to write whatever album came out of me at this moment in time.”

“Time For You,” definitely stands out as the best track on the album, and is made even better by its accompanying music video. The song highlights the solace found in the love of a partner, any partner, whether it be romantic, friendship, or otherwise. This message is reinforced at the end of the music video when the members of Cable Ties are lying down and embracing each other, reminding audiences of the power of friendship.

“Thoughts Back,” sees Brown take the vocal reigns for the first time since the band’s formation, delivering a fierce take on the toll of mental health challenges. “I wrote this song mostly centered around my own experiences with mental illness,” she says. “It also plays into the themes of the record, such as caregiving and mental workload. So often people give up their own lives to help others and, as a result, rarely have their voices, their experiences or their history acknowledged.”

All Her Plans is out June 23 via Merge Records. Tickets to see Cable Ties on their North American Tour, which includes a performance at Colony Woodstock before concluding at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City are available here.

  • Elliott Landy Launches Campaign for “The Band Photographs: Volume Two”

Elliott Landy, a legendary Rock and Roll photographer, has launched a campaign to help his second book, The Band Photographs: Volume Two, based on Woodstock based The Band, get published. His first book, The Band Photographs, 1968-1969, was published in 2015. Landy became a rock group photographer in their early days in the late 60s, and much of his work has yet to be seen by the public.

    Elliott Landy The Band
The Band members. Credit: Rolling Stone

The Band originated in Woodstock, and Elliott Landy was the official photographer for the Woodstock Festival in 1969. Much of his work there on display in his first book. Because of his photographs, audiences now have a glimpse into the time period of 1960s Woodstock. Artists he has photographed include Van Morrison and The Band’s Bob Dylan, pieces that have made the covers of the Nashville Skyline and Moondance, respectively. Having had his work published in major magazines and publications, The Band Photographs, 1968-1969 was published in 2015, with the help of Kickstarter.

Landy said, “I was the only photographer who had access to The Band during that period while living in Woodstock, N.Y. Because we were friends I had the freedom to hang out and take whatever pictures I wanted. I shot more than 10,000 frames of film of The Band during this period. Of these, fewer than 25 had been published prior to my 2015 book, The Band Photographs 1968-1969, which contained 200 photographs—most of which had never been published before.”

Landy hopes his photographs will help audiences understand who The Band is as people and individuals, not just performers.

“These were people who lived with each other, shared on-the-road experiences with each other for over seven years, and they hadn’t lost any of their basic humanity – they were still kind and nice to everyone,” Landy said.

Even years after The Band’s breakup after founding member Rick Danko’s death, the group is still an influential figure in Rock and Roll history. They have been subject to a number of articles, essays, and books. Along with The Band’s music itself, Landy’s photography helps bring the group to life.

Volume Two of The Band Photographs allows Landy to showcase his work that didn’t make it in volume one.

Landy added, “So after this volume two is finished, I’ll see what is left. After all, I did take over 10,000 photographs and I suspect there are other good ones that I just haven’t taken notice of… So we’ll see what comes after this if anything regarding the band photographs.”

I have developed a way of animating these photographs in my own software which will allow users to play them synchronously with any music they chose including the band’s music of course. So perhaps that will be the next iteration of these photographs.

Because of the unfettered access I had as a friend, the photographs bring us into their lives from the mundane chores of grocery shopping to the fun of playing football in the backyard to the sublime moments of creation in the studio and onstage. You will be transported back to their homes in Woodstock and invited to gather on Levon’s bed as they discuss lyrics for who knows, “Rag Mama Rag” or maybe “King Harvest.”

Landy’s campaign went live on Feb. 7, 2023. A little over three weeks are left in the campaign, ending on April 8. Signed editions, limited edition prints, lithos and more are being offered to pledges. The same size as volume one, it will be a great companion to the first book or your favorite vinyl records by The Band.

  • Frenchy and the Punk & Dust Bowl Faeries bring Dark Cabaret to Colony Woodstock on March 30

Two Hudson Valley Dark Cabaret bands, Frenchy and the Punk and Dust Bowl Faeries, will be bringing their blissful and maniacal music to Colony Woodstock on Thursday, March 30th. Dancing and magical happenings will kick off at 8pm that evening.

Frenchy and the Punk & Dust Bowl Faeries will be bringing blissful and maniacal Dark Cabaret music to Colony Woodstock on Thursday, March 30th. Dancing and magical happenings will kick off at 8pm that evening.

What is Dark Cabaret? This unique genre draws on the aesthetics of burlesque, vaudeville and Weimar-era cabaret, with live performances that borrow from the stylings of goth and punk. Frenchy and the Punk are an unorthodox, evocative electro-acoustic Dark Cabaret/post-punk duo based in the Hudson Valley. With exotic melodies and European-inflected percussive textures, they invoke a dark carnival of two that they take on the road across the US, UK and in Europe.

French-born singer Samantha Stephenson sings with a gothy heft and authority that may remind one generation of Siouxsie Sioux and another of Grace Slick. Guitarist, live looper, and former punk bass player, Scott Helland weaves dark riffs and layers of spidery melody in an acoustic/electric tone that is entirely his own.

Dark Carnival/Dream Music group Dust Bowl Faeries, best lauded by Bay Area Reporter in 2020 as “Americana by way of pagan cabaret,” are a faerie-tale fusion of dark cabaret, delirious polka and gothic spaghetti western music. Based in the New York Hudson Valley, the band’s eclectic repertoire of songs draw inspiration from circus songs, murder ballads and Eastern European folk tunes.

Accordion, singing saw and acoustic guitar combine to create the Dust Bowl Faeries otherworldly sound. The band was founded by Ryder Cooley (faerie queen) and her taxidermy spirit animal, Hazel the Ram. Ryder and Hazel are joined by Jon B. Woodin (rocket faerie), Liz LoGiudice (river faerie), Andrew Stein (time faerie) & Rubie LaRue (feisty faerie). American Highways says of them, “You can almost smell the gas lamps in the street & the absinthe being poured.”
