Wabanaki bassist, composer, and songwriter Mali Obomsawin has announced three shows across New York State, celebrating their newest album, Sweet Tooth.
On March 26th Mali Obomsawin will be playing Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, followed by a performance at National Jazz Museum in Harlem, as part of the Jazz and Social Justice Event on March 28th, ending with a performance at Public Records on March 29th.
Sweet Tooth, the debut album from Obomsawin, highlights centuries of clever adaptation and resistance that have fueled the art and culture of Wabanaki people. Written as a compositional suite, the album blends Wabanaki stories and songs passed down in Obomsawin’s own family with tunes addressing contemporary Indigenous life, colonization, continuity, love and rage. It’s at once intimately personal, featuring field recordings of relatives at Odanak First Nation, but also conveys a larger story of the Wabanaki people, stretching across the domain of their confederacy from Eastern Canada to Southern New England.
Obomsawin’s show at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem will be followed by an in-depth conversation with series host Larry Blumenfeld, NJMH Executive Director and Co-chief Marten Band/Ramapo Munsee Lenape Nation Tracy Hyter-Suffern, and other panelists about connections between jazz and Indigenous cultures, and the issues surrounding Indigenous resistance movements.
In three movements, Obomsawin’s powerful compositions honor the Indigenous ability to shape great art from the harshest fires of colonialism. The compositions reveal threads that bind together blues, jazz, hymns, folk songs, and Native cultures, and foreground the breadth and continuity of Indigenous contributions to these genres. “Telling Indigenous stories through the language of jazz is not a new phenomenon,” Obomsawin explains. “My people have had to innovate endlessly to get our stories heard – learning to express ourselves in French, English, Abenaki… but sometimes words fail us, and we must use sound”.

The “Eddies” have previously announced five music artists – Mike Campese, Felicia Collins, George Frayne, Smokey Greene and John Tichy – as well as photographer Martin Benjamin, educator Sister Mary Anne Nelson, CSJ and radio host and folk musician Wanda Fischer, will be inducted during the ceremony.
Confirmed performers for the Capital Region Music Hall of Fame ceremony include Michael Eck, Arlin Green and Scott Greene, Margo Macero, and Graham Tichy.
Michael Eck of Albany is performing a song representing Fischer’s folk career. He has led many musical lives—performing songwriter; roots scholar; multi-instrumentalist working with Aimee Mann, Pete Seeger, Patti Smith and 10,000 Maniacs; serial band member, from the punk of The Plague to the folk of Ramblin Jug Stompers and Lost Radio Rounders; nationally recognized cultural critic and guitar brand editor; concert/radio/album producer; Caffe Lena board member; publicist; painter; bouncer; roadie; record store clerk and more. He was inducted into the Eddies Music Hall of Fame in 2022.
Arlin Greene and Scott Greene, siblings, are performing music representing their father, inductee Smokey Greene. Both got their start playing bluegrass festivals around the Northeast with their dad. Since then, Arlin Greene has played pop, rock and jazz music in East Africa, and folk, rock, country and bluegrass music across the U.S. and Canada. Arlin has worked in bands with such notables as Bill Keith, Dan Tyminski and James “D Train” Williams and has recorded with several artists. He is now the bass player with The McKrells, The Trophy Husbands and the Greene Brothers. Scott Greene has played country, bluegrass, rock and pop music with many local bands including Johnny and the Triumphs, Chip and Chan and Stony Creek. He has toured the country playing bluegrass with Burnt Toast and multi-GrammyTM winner Dan Tyminski.
Margo Macero will perform twice, playing music representing Campese and Collins. The vocalist/guitarist is a country and rock artist from the Glens Falls region. Active as a performing artist since age 12, she attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. She has performed for judges on ABC’s “American Idol” and NBC’s “The Voice” and has worked in the film industry with James Franco, Pete Davidson, Jon Bernthal, Timothy Whidbee and others. Joining her on stage at the Hall of Fame ceremony will be Dave Goldenberg (drums), Jeff Madden (second guitar, harmonies) and Martina Louise (bass, harmonies).
Graham Tichy will perform a medley of two songs–one each representing George Frayne’s and his dad John Tichy’s career in Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airman – with band members Mike Kelley, Don Young and Chris Osborn. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and guitar instructor for over two decades, Tichy has been active with regional artists Doc Scanlon’s Rhythm Boys, the Lustre Kings, Johnny Rabb, Reggie’s Red Hot Feetwarmers and Rocky Velvet, as well as national acts including Los Straitjackets, Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen and two Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees, The Coasters and Wanda Jackson. He currently leads a diverse range of musical projects around the U.S. and Europe including GOONS! (1960s garage/soul/punk), The Swingin’ Palms (Hawaiian) and Beachcombers (early 1960s surf).

Grammy and Academy Award-nominated rock band Counting Crows are scheduled to tour this summer with Dashboard Confessional, performing at five amphitheaters in New York.
Formed in San Francisco, Counting Crows’ career spans seven studio albums over nearly three decades. The band’s debut studio album, August and Everything After, was released in Sept. 1993 and peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 weekly chart. They found further success when their 1996 second studio album, Recovering the Satellites, peaked at number 1 on the Billboard 200 weekly chart. Their music has been prominently featured in pop culture, including “Colorblind”, from their 1999 third album This Dessert Life, being included in the soundtrack for the 1999 film Cruel Intentions. Their seventh studio album, Somewhere Under Wonderland, was released in 2014, and their newest EP, Butter Miracle, was released in 2021.
Dashboard Confessional
Rock band Dashboard Confessional originated in Boca Raton, Florida, and is led by singer Chris Carrabba. Their debut album, The Swiss Army Romance, was released in March 2000. They released their ninth album, All The Truth That I Can Tell, in 2022, touring with fellow rock band Jimmy Eat World in support of the album on the “Surviving the Truth” tour. The band has a long history with Counting Crows, first meeting in 2003 at the 17th annual Bridge School Benefit Concert. In the nearly 20 years since they have formed both a professional and personal relationship together.

Saratoga Performing Arts Center has announced its new inaugural fundraiser to kick-off the summer season, “Summer SPACtacular.”
Featuring an expansive celebration across the SPAC grounds “Summer SPACtacular” will include live music, a multi-course “Summerscape Supper,” culinary tastings, cocktails, a whiskey and cigar lounge, fireworks and a dance party on SPAC’s historic stage. Slated for Friday, June 2 from 5:00-11:00 p.m., the event will benefit SPAC’s mission, residencies, and youth education initiatives.
“Our new Summer SPACtacular is both a summer season kick-off and a celebration of SPAC’s expanded mission and its new campus – from cocktails and a dance party on our historic stage, to exquisite tastings with live music throughout the grounds, and a cigar and whiskey lounge in our Pavilion,” said Elizabeth Sobol, President & CEO. “We are grateful to the SPAC Action Council and Friends of SPAC for their incredible efforts to make this event a reality – all in support of our resident companies and educational programming.”
Featuring two different ticketing options including a “Party Pass” and an “All-Access Pass,” attendees will have the opportunity to experience SPAC like never before with tastings, libations and entertainment throughout the SPAC campus. Guests who purchase a “Party Pass” will enjoy live music by Saratoga Springs native Jes Hudak, tastings from local eateries, distilleries and breweries, and a whiskey and cigar lounge – all culminating with a dazzling fireworks display and a DJ dance party on the stage.
In addition to the “Party Pass” offerings, the “All-Access Pass” also includes a reception with craft cocktails and live jazz on the amphitheater stage, followed by an intimate “Summerscape Supper” featuring three courses that celebrate spring’s culinary bounty with wine pairings produced by CulinaryArts@SPAC with renowned regional chefs Kim Klopstock, Michael Blake, and Kevin London. An exciting paddle raise hosted by emcee and News10ABC’s Lydia Kulbida will also highlight the supper. The “All-Access Pass” also features exclusive admission to post-dinner aperitifs and sweet treats on The Pines Terrace.

Alligator Records artists Tinsley Ellis and Marcia Ball will bring their “Acoustic Songs and Stories Tour” to Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs on Sunday, April 2, 2023. Each artist will play a solo set, then they will share some songs together. The concert will start at 7pm.

For the concert, Ellis plans to perform his most popular songs, plus Delta blues covers and classics by artists like Bob Dylan and Leo Kottke on his guitars. Ball will play the piano accompanying her singing. She will present her original songs full of the characters and places that shaped her. They will weave the music together with their stories on stage and on the road.
Georgia troubadour Tinsley Ellis has been immersed in music his entire life. He acquired his first guitar at age seven, then he developed and sharpened his skills as he grew up. During his career, Ellis has toured the world non-stop for 35 years, which was interwove in his music. He recently released his 20th album Devil May Care in 2022 which received Blues Music Award nominations for Blues Rock Album Of The Year (for Devil May Care).
Blues artist Marcia Ball released her lastest album, Shine Bright, produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos in 2018. This album contains twelve songs (including nine originals), and gathered the most musically substantial, hopeful and uplifting set of songs of her five-decade career. Now, with Shine Bright, Ball’s aggressively hopeful songs are energized by Steve Berlin’s inventive and exciting production, creating electrifying music that is daring, inspired, poignant and timely.

Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) has announced the return of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS) back to the Spa Little Theatre for its summer residency from June 11-August 20.
Marking the 10th anniversary of its collaboration with SPAC, the six-concert summer season follows two previously announced performances on March 18 and May 13 by CMS, now a year-round presence in Saratoga Springs.
“Our 2023 season carries a celebratory theme across all of our residencies, but none more so than with the 10th anniversary of our partnership with Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center,” says Elizabeth Sobol, President and CEO of Saratoga Performing Arts Center. “Over the past decade, SPAC and CMS have cultivated a dedicated audience of chamber music devotees in Saratoga Springs and we are excited to the continue the tradition not just every summer, but year-round as well.”
Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s summer season opens with “From Classic to Modern,” showcasing works from Brahms and Beethoven to Bloch, Khachaturian and Milhaud (June 11), followed by “Great Quintets” of Mozart, Dohnányi and Dvořák (June 18); “From Vienna to Paris” (July 16); a program from guest artists The Miró String Quartet (July 23); and “Spanish Journey” (August 13). The season closes with “New Classics” (August 20), which includes quintets by Bloch and Suk that CMS has ushered into the standard chamber repertoire.
Anchored by Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Artistic Directors Wu Han (piano) and David Finckel (cello), this season’s guest artists also include violinists Arnaud Sussmann, Alexander Sitkovetsky, Ani Kavafian, Ida Kavafian, Stella Chen, Danbi Um, Kristin Lee, and Aaron Boyd; violists Paul Neubauer, James Thompson, Molly Carr, and Matthew Lipman; cellist Sihao He, pianists Wu Qian, Juho Pohjonen, Soyeon Kate Lee; clarinetist Ricardo Morales, guitarist Jason Vieaux, soprano Rihab Chaieb, and The Miró Quartet.
The summer season follows two previously announced spring concerts offered by Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. On March 18, soprano Jessica Rivera joins pianists Michael Stephen Brown and Gilles Vonsattell, cellist Nicholas Canellakis and percussionist Ian David Rosenbaum to present “Voices of the Americas,” a program celebrating the range of ideas, sounds, and cultures that have inspired composers from the Americas in the 20th Century like Copland, Gershwin, Golijov, and Villa-Lobos. On May 13, pianist Wu Han, violinist Arnaud Sussmann, and cellist David Finckel unite to perform works by Beethoven and Dvořák.

Legendary rock band Guns N’ Roses have announced their 2023 world tour, with a performance at Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) on Sept. 1. The world tour, which lasts throughout summer and fall, marks the group’s first North American tour since their We’re F’N Back! Tour in 2021. Supporting the band on tour is a lineup of superstars, including Carrie Underwood, The Pretenders, Alice In Chains, The Warning, and Dirty Honey.

Originating from Los Angeles, Guns N’ Roses’ current members include Axl Rose (vocals, piano), Duff McKagan (bass), Slash (lead guitar), Dizzy Reed (keyboard), Richard Fortus (rhythm guitar), Frank Ferrer (drums), and Melissa Reese (keyboard). The group is one of the best-selling rock bands and arguably the face of the genre. Their first album, 1987’s Appetite For Destruction, has been crowned “the best-selling U.S. debut album ever” and “the 11th best-selling U.S. album of all time.”

Long Island Funk trio Baked Shrimp has announced their upcoming Spring Tour, taking place this March and April across the East Coast.
Since forming in 2017, the high-octane power funk trio Baked Shrimp has become a top up-and-coming artist in the festival circuit. The energetic and improvisational young talents of Jared Cowen (Guitar/Vocals), Scott Reill (Bass/Vocals), and Jager Soss (Drums/Vocals) from Long Island, NY have built a catalog of over 150 original songs which they cycle through night after night, making every performance unique from the last.
The band is coming off a groundbreaking 2022 in which they performed over 120 concerts covering nearly half the United States, as well as a debut performance in Canada. Baked Shrimp has provided direct support for artists such as the Disco Biscuits, Pink Talking Fish,Aqueous, Mihali , Kung Fu, Consider the Source, and more. Baked Shrimp is also quickly climbing higher on major festival lineups including Peach Music Festival, Summer Camp Music Festival, Great South Bay Music Festival, Adirondack Independence Music Festival, Catskill Mountain Jubilee, and even host their own festival in Upstate New York called LonCon.
Baked Shrimp founded LonCon in 2021 following the passing of their most loyal supporter and ambassador, Lon “Conscious” Gellman. The inaugural festival featuring live music, art, and two nights of camping took place in August of 2021 at legendary Arrowhead Ranch in Parksville, NY. After a year off in 2022, the band looks forward to the return of LonCon in 2023.
Despite Baked Shrimp’s very intense touring schedule, the trio has managed to find time to consistently release new music. The band’s 2021 release of Conscious received high praise by media outlets such as LiveForLiveMusic, Grateful Web, The Sound Podcast with Ira Haberman, and more. After a quick release of a three-disc live album The Prawno Tapes, Vol. 1, Baked Shrimp went back into the studio to finish their early-2022 release Pork Etiquette. The trio is scheduled to head into the studio once again in early 2023 to lay the groundwork for their fourth studio album.

A cappella group Pentatonix announced a North American Tour with special guest Lauren Alaina, stopping at SPAC on Aug. 23 and St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview in Syracuse on Aug. 24.
Pentatonix is one of the most innovative and inventive vocal groups of all time, redefining a cappella. Emerging in 2011, the vocal quintet -Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Matt Sallee, has won three Grammys, the first to win ‘Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella’ in 2015 and 2016. They have been nominated for a Daytime EMMY Award and became the first a capella group to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The group recently finished their most successful Christmas tour ever, playing to 200,000+ people across 22 cities and the globe.
They have also played The Kennedy Center Honors for Tom Hanks, covering “That Thing You Do” as President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama watched. Plus, they have collaborated with Kelly Clarkson, Dolly Parton, Miley Cyrus, Lindsey Stirling, and more. Their most recent album Holidays Around the World marked the group’s ninth Top 10 entry on Billboard’s Top Holiday Albums Chart.
