  • SPAC Announces 2023 Spring Season in the Spa Little Theatre

    Saratoga Performing Arts Center(SPAC) announced its 2023 spring season lineup in the Spa Little Theatre. The ever first spring season offerings featuring live theatre, jazz, folk, global and classical music, including cooperations with Caffe Lena.

    Highlighting the series are the SPAC debuts of Aquila Theatre for two productions of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and Grammy-nominated cappella group Kings Return, in addition to the return of global music ensemble Banda Magda. Caffe Lena @ SPAC is also returned with performances of The Steel Wheels and The Brubeck Brothers Quartet in Spa Little Theatre. The previously announced year-round residency by Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center will also continue with a finale performance by Artistic Directors Wu Han and David Finckel.

    The Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) is located in Saratoga Springs in upstate New York. It is a charitable organization and one of America’s most prestigious summer festivals. Setting in a 2,400-acre park preserve surrounded by hiking trails, geysers, and natural mineral springs, SPAC draws vacation crowds and arts connoisseurs for immersive experiences of performances by resident companies. SPAC also hosts the annual Saratoga Wine and Food.

    Published in 1813, Jane Austen’s ultimate romantic comedy Pride and Prejudice has stood the test of time. Besides the Bennet sisters’ navigations toward love and marriage, Austen’s humorous criticize of the English class system, and the thoughts and feelings of her women characters are worthy to enjoy. Aquila Theatre will bring this classic thrillingly to life with its signature passion, energy, and visual flair for its SPAC debut.

    Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center

    Voices of the Americas – 7 PM Saturday, March 18

    Experience the wide range of ideas, sounds, and cultures that have inspired composers from the Americas in the 20th century. The program opens and closes with vibrant, beloved classics by Copland and Gershwin brought about by their travels to Latin America.

    Kings Return – 7 PM Friday, March 31

    The Grammy-nominated Kings Return is a vocal band of brothers — Gabe Kunda, Vaughn Faison, J.E. McKissic & Jamall Williams. Fusing gospel, Jazz, R&B/Soul, and classical music, the a capella group performs songs from the Bee Gees “How Deep is Your Love” to “Ave Maria” to Leon Bridges “River” and Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Based in Dallas, Texas, Kings Return’s popularity grew when they began posting videos to social media from the stairwell where they rehearse. The group has now amassed almost 10 million views across all platforms.

    Caffe Lena @ SPAC: The Steel Wheels – 7 PM Sunday, April 2

    A Virginia-based Americana band with a strong bluegrass underpinning, The Steel Wheels explore deeply rooted yet fresh folk rock sounds.

    Caffe Lena @ SPAC: The Brubeck Brothers Quartet – 7 PM Sunday, April 23

    With Dan and Chris Brubeck as the foundation, guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb, complete this dynamic quartet. Although the Quartet’s style is rooted in “straight-ahead” jazz, their concerts reveal an inherent ability to explore and play odd time signatures while naturally integrating the influences of funk, blues and world music.

    Banda Magda – 7 PM Thursday, May 4

    Following their SPAC on Stage debut in 2019, Banda Magda will return to Saratoga with all new music and their global sounds including samba, French chanson, Greek folk tunes, Colombian cumbia, and Afro-Peruvian lando. Their songs capture the best of mid-century pop ballads and cinematic arranging, drawing on the band’s global background and unchained musicality.

    Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center

    An Evening with David, Wu Han & Arnaud – 7 PM Saturday, May 13

    Artistic Directors Wu Han and David Finckel and violinist Arnaud Sussman perform Beethoven and Dvořák to close the CMS spring season.

  • The Gibson Brothers to Perform at Glens Falls Park Theatre in February

    On February 2, The Gibson brothers will be performing in Glens Falls at the Park Theatre in support of their impending album Darkest Hour.

    Darkest Hour, produced by Jerry Douglas varies from trad-grass to country-soul, electric guitars and drums. Eric and Leigh Gibson build a connection with their audience by taking universally known truths/ feelings and infusing them into impeccable bluegrass, country, and Americana songs. The album features Eric and Leigh Gibson vocals and guitar, along with Mike Barber on the bass, Justin Moses playing the mandolin, and Eamon McGloughlin on the fiddle. Additionally, John Gardner, who plays drums and Guthrie Trapp, who rocks an electric guitar, were later added on some tracks. 

    The Gibson brothers are exceptional artists that capture the soul of country music. There’s a reason why the phenomenal Ricky Skaggs offered the brothers to produce a country record two decades ago. Country Music Hall of Famer, Tom T. Hall has always been a loyal supporter through encouraging their writing, and predicting success.

    The brothers built their status by winning an abundance of bluegrass awards, released albums on almost every premier Americana label including Sugar Hill and Rounder. Their songs have also been recorded  by bluegrass legends such as Del McCoury. Despite their success, The Gibson Brothers are not yet household names. Although, their remarkable resume and latest album, Darkest Hour could change that. Tickets can be found here.

  • Dave Matthews Band Announce 2023 Dates At Forest Hills, Darien Lake, SPAC And Jones Beach

    Dave Matthews Band has announced their 2023 Summer tour, and will be making stops at Forest Hills Stadium, Darien Lake Ampitheater, Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and Jones Beach Theater.

    The tour will celebrate Dave Matthews Band’s their 10th studio album Walk Around The Moon, out May 19th. Most of the album’s 12 original songs are produced by Rob Evans, including its first single “Madman’s Eyes,” which is available now. Longtime DMB collaborator John Alagia serves as executive producer on “Walk Around the Moon,” which took shape during the pandemic and “is as much a reflection on the current times as it is an urge to find common ground,” according to a press release from the band.

    After playing a trio of dates in Mexico, Dave Matthews Band will kick off its U.S. tour at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, TX on May 19. The headline run will include the band’s first show at the historic Forest Hills Stadium in New York on June 9. Dave Matthews Band will play two-night stands in Wilmington, NC; Charleston, SC; Noblesville, IN; Chicago, IL; Gilford, NH; Saratoga Springs, NY; Camden, NJ; West Palm Beach, FL and Irvine, CA. The tour will conclude with the band’s traditional three-day, Labor Day weekend celebration at Gorge Amphitheatre in George, WA.

    Eco-conscious Tour Campaign

    Dave Matthews Band is once again partnering with Reverb to offset carbon emissions for band and fan travel, creating a climate positive tour. Dave Matthews’ ongoing partnership with The Nature Conservancy has resulted in three million trees being planted since 2020. This year’s continued partnership will bring the total to four million trees. Fans can join in this mission by adding an optional donation of $2 per ticket to plant a tree with The Nature Conservancy’s Plant a Billion Trees campaign – a major forest restoration effort with the goal of planting a billion trees around the world by 2025.   • Binghamton Philharmonic Announces Wallenberg Festival for Jan. 28

    The Binghamton Philharmonic has announced its Wallenberg Festival, a joint concert with the Binghamton Youth Symphony and Binghamton Community Orchestra, coming up this Saturday, January 28.

    This Festival is in celebration of orchestra founders Fritz and Marianne Wallenberg, and their lasting legacy of symphonic music in the Southern Tier. The program will include a side-by-side performance of the Youth Symphony and Philharmonic through works by Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky. The performance is scheduled for Saturday, January 28 at 7:30pm at the Forum Theatre.

    Founded by Fritz and Marianne Wallenberg in 1955 as the Binghamton Symphony and Choral Society, the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra presents an annual series of classical, pops, and chamber music concerts in Downtown Binghamton and throughout Broome County. The professional musicians of the Philharmonic, represented by Local 380 of the American Federation of Musicians, hail from the Southern Tier, New York City, and surrounding states. Maestro Daniel Hege was appointed Music Director in 2018.

    A Night Of Classics

    The show will be conducted by Daniel Hege, Evan Meccarello, and Barry Peters. The Binghamton Youth Symphony will perform pieces by Antonín Dvořák and Franz von Suppè. The Binghamton Community Orchestra will follow up with more Dvořák and works by Johannes Brahms, while the Binghamton Philharmonic will perform music by Edvard Grieg. The night will conclude with a joint performance by the Binghamton Youth Symphony and the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra.

    There will also be a Pre-concert Dinner to support the Philharmonic, held at the Doubletree By Hilton Hotel Binghamton. The dinner will be $35 per person and seating begins at 5pm the day of the show.

  • Black History Month Step Show returns to the Palace Theatre in February

    On February 9, TD Bank’s Price Chopper Black History Month Step Show, will be presenting some of the best steps teams from the Capital Region and more. You can catch the show at 5pm inside of Albany’s Palace Theatre. This annual event will be full of high energy, rhythmic performers and should not be missed

    Stepping is a historical form of art that keeps the memories of enslaved ancestors alive. When stepping, the body is used as an instrument through a combination of foot stomps, claps and words. In the 1800s, African American railroad workers stepped to uplift their spirits during their inhuman treatment.  Since speaking was prohibited at times, African Americans communicated through step. Their movements created a tune that told the story of their pain and sorrow. Today this tradition is continued by millions of people throughout and widely popular within sororities/ fraternities. More information about stepping can be found here.

    The euphonious and capturing sound of step is something that needs to be fully appreciated. Through rapid movement and split second changes, you can tell how much time and energy is placed into the choreography. The movement is so alluring that it not only appeals to the eyes and ears but as well as the soul. With each foot stomp you can feel the vibrations run through your body. The entertainment will leave you wanting to learn more about these organizations and their history. This program and others like it offer participants not only a creative outlet, but also a chance to be a part of something bigger than themselves.

  • EPAC Rock Project presents “I’m Still Standing” featuring the music of Elton John this February

    The Endicott Performing Arts Center EPAC Rock Project starts off 2023 with “I’m Still Standing”, featuring the music of Elton John. The celebration features local musicians for a multi media live rock show, February 9-12 at the Robert Eckert Theater in Endicott, NY.

    The EPAC Rock Project has been bringing local musicians together with other performing artists who sing and dance, to create live rock shows with multi media at EPAC for many years now. EPAC Rock Project has featured such classic rock bands as The Beatles, Queen, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Metallica, and many others over the years.

    EPAC is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide an affordable and high quality venue to local, regional and touring performing artists, enabling them to present, develop, & improve their artistic efforts. For a quarter century, EPAC has renovated and operated out of the 105 year-old “Lyric Theater” (now the Robery Eckert Theater) in Endicott, just west of Binghamton.

    This year’s EPAC Rock Project will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of EPAC by featuring the ‘Best of’ Elton John’s music. “I’m Still Standing” will feature the top hits from Elton John’s diverse collection, including ‘Funeral for a Friend’, Benny and the Jets’, ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’, ‘Your Song’, ‘Tiny Dancer’, ‘Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues’, ‘Honky Cat’, ‘Saturday Night’s Alright (for fighting)’, ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’, ‘Rocket Man’, ‘Levon’, ‘Don’t Let the Sun’, ‘Candle in the Wind’, ‘I’m Still Standing’, and others.

    The live rock show brings together local musicians, singers and dancers performing these hit Elton John songs in front of Big Screen Projections with full stage lighting and sound. Tickets are $20 for Adults and $18 for Seniors (65+) and Children (12 & under).

  • The Orchestra Now Presents “Haydn, Brahms & The Manufactured Classical Ideal” at Met Museum Feb 19 

    Conductor and music director Leon Botstein leads The Orchestra Now (TŌN) for their upcoming presentation of Haydn, Brahms & The Manufactured Classical Ideal on Sunday, February 19th at 2 PM. This will be the second installment of the Orchestra’s popular Sight & Sound series performed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

    The program compares theories of classical music structure and 18th-century sculpture, featuring Brahms’ Variations on a Theme of Haydn and Haydn’s Symphony No. 38. Alongside the performance, there will be projected images from the Museum’s concurrent Chroma: Ancient Sculpture in Color exhibition.  

    The Orchestra Now (TŌN) currently comprises 58 vibrant young musicians from 12 different countries across the globe: Brazil, China, Colombia, France, Hong Kong, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Singapore, Taiwan, and the United States. All share a mission to make orchestral music relevant to 21st-century audiences by sharing their unique personal insights in a welcoming environment.   

    Conductor, educator, and music historian Leon Botstein, whom The New York Times said “draws rich, expressive playing from the orchestra,” founded TŌN in 2015 as a graduate program at Bard College, where he is also president. HuffPost, who has called TŌN’s performances “dramatic and intense,” praises these concerts as “an opportunity to see talented musicians early in their careers.”

    Leon Botstein is founder Leon Botstein and music director of The Orchestra Now (TŌN), music director and principal conductor of the American Symphony Orchestra (ASO), artistic codirector of Bard SummerScape and the Bard Music Festival. He has been guest conductor with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Aspen Music Festival, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Mariinsky Theatre, Russian National Orchestra in Moscow, Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Taipei Symphony, Simón Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, and Sinfónica Juvenil de Caracas in Venezuela, among others.

  • The Ashokan Center Winter Hoot to be held Feb 3-5 feat. The Mammals, Rachael Yamagata, and more 

    The Ashokan Center will host their annual Winter Hoot – a down-home and down-to-earth music gathering where are all welcome with joy to spare, over February 3-5 in Olivebridge, NY.

    Located 20 minutes south of Woodstock and 25 minutes west of Kingston, The Ashokan Center offers an opportunity to reconnect with your local community through their twice a year Hoots.

    The Hoot began in 2013 when Mike Merenda, Ruth Ungar, and their friends at the Ashokan Center and throughout the local community decided to pull together and try their hands at producing a festival. With the success of the first event, now twice a year, the Hoot Heroes continue to build a Hoot, a celebration of music & nature for all generations.

    The Ashokan Center’s friendly and skilled Outdoor Education staff will lead blacksmithing workshops, indoor kids zone activities, and a laid-back instrument petting zoo where anyone can try their hand at a variety of musical instruments. 

    Food is vended festival-style by Ashokan Chef Bill Warnes and Veggie Oasis, plus local beer, cider, wine, and non-alcoholic Immuneschein spritzers. 

    Globe-trotting ice sculptor Thomas Brown will entertain onlookers outdoors all day, creating a unique and ephemeral work of art to be illuminated at night. Late night improvisational jazz duets will be provided by London-born saxophonist and composer George Winstone with guitarist Ben Monder (of the Bad Plus.)

    The event is a showcase and fundraiser for the Ashokan Center, a unique nonprofit organization with a 55 year history of youth outdoor education and 42 years of cultural preservation at summer Music & Dance Camps for adults and families. This past year the center has expanded outreach to offer local in-school and after-school arts and nature programming, and increased access to its 385 acres of forests through guided hikes, day passes, and community events like the Hoot.

    Friday, February 3rd kicks off with a dinner, documentary, and discussion as Saturday overflows with music & dancing all day into the night plus blacksmithing, mini concerts in the pewter shop, used clothing swap, kids zone activities, local food & libations. Sunday, February 5th closes with hiking, yoga, and a farewell singalong.

    Admission tickets and lodging are on sale now, with passes in advance $50 for the weekend, $35 for Saturday only, $25 for Friday dinners and $10 for Friday Film Screening tickets. At the Door, “Pay what you want” admission is available – no one is turned away for lack of funds.

  • 37th Annual Tibet US House Benefit Concert Returns to Carnegie Hall, Featuring Maggie Rogers, Maya Hawke, and More

    One of the longest-running and most renowned live cultural events in New York City, the Annual Tibet House US Benefit Concert has announced its return to The Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall on February 26, 2024, at 7:30 PM.

    The Tibet House US Benefit Concert, now in its 37 year, delivers an evening full of amazing music, camaraderie, and one-night-only collaborations. Joining esteemed composer and artistic director Philip Glass, who once again curated this year’s line-up, will be: Maggie Rogers, Laurie Anderson, Maya Hawke, The Philip Glass Ensemble, Tenzin Choegyal, Scorchio Quartet, Joan Baez, SNL‘s Bowen Yang, Christian Lee Hutson, and Ukrainian punk rock band Gogol Bordello. Uma Thurman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, and Arden Wohl will serve as the evening’s honorary chairs. Recently added, Joan Baez is a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Recipient, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, and Kennedy Center Honoree.

    This annual event has been a standout for over three-and-a-half decades, consistently selling out and assembling some of the most legendary and exciting names in music and art. Some of these include Alabama Shakes, boygenius, Carly Simon, David Bowie, Stephen Colbert, Lou Reed, Phoebe Bridgers, Sharon Jones, FKA twigs, The Roots, Jim James, Vampire Weekend, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Blood Orange, Sigur Ros, R.E.M, Emmylou Harris, Jon Batiste, Nathaniel Rateliff, Jason Isbell, Iggy Pop, The Flaming Lips, Keanu Reeves, Eddie Vedder, Annie Lennox, Brittany Howard, Black Pumas, Cage The Elephant, Cyndi Lauper, Trey Anastasio and many, many more.

  • Harriman State Park Featured in Sheridan Rúitín Music Video

    Catskills unique Irish folk band Sheridan Rúitín has just released a video filmed on a mountain top for their original song “Rebels of the Night” on January 1st.

    Along with this, the band has also just posted their upcoming tour where you can find all the details for coming shows and events, including 6 shows in NY around February and March. The band is currently busy working on a new song that will come with a music video most likely the first or second week of February as well. 

    As for the video, “Rebels of the Night” was filmed in the desolate wilderness of Harriman State Park, Rockland County. There are many unique trails and hikes around this part of Upstate NY, the video shows some of the unique views between Bear Mountain and Anthony’s Nose in the Hudson Highlands. To film the video, the crew carried a whole drum set up along with all of the other instruments and hiked up the mountain the weekend before Thanksgiving. Producing amazing footage to match the catchy Irish tune of their new song “Rebels of the Night.”

    In the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, as more pubs and restaurants were shutting their doors, Billy Houlihan became more and more of a regular at his next-door neighbor’s (Sheridan’s) pub. One evening in May of 2020, Billy brought his guitar over to the pub and he and Sheridan sat at the bar, singing rebel songs and drinking beer. Sheridan got quite into the moment while singing “The Kerry Recruit,” leading him to tumble off his barstool ultimately breaking his ankle (Irish: Rúitín) in 2 places. In the words of Sheridan: “Me feckin leg is in bits.”

    Sheridan Rúitín now had an official band name and began recording songs and videos to release on YouTube. As pubs and restaurants were slowly opening back up, the family band began playing many gigs and were joined by old musician friends, John Damiano and Michael Zayas. Towards the end of 2021, the group began creating their own arrangements of traditional songs and writing a few originals to eventually become their debut album, “Rebels in the Night.” The album saw much success in pre-orders from all over the world. “Rebels in the Night” was released on March 6, 2022, and Sheridan Rúitín went on tour the whole month in support of their debut album. 

    The band has since been added to the bills of major Irish festivals in the USA, and is currently working on new music and another album. Sheridan Rúitín takes over the New York suburbia Irish music scene by filling the gap between Celtic rock and traditional Irish folk ballads.
