  • U2 Adds 8 Shows, Phish in Talks for MSG Sphere Residency

Sphere Entertainment Co. and Live Nation has announced the heavily anticipated “U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At Sphere,” a first-of-its-kind live music experience, happening at the brand new Sphere at The Venetian in Las Vegas this fall. Due to high demand, the band has added additional shows, bringing the total number to 17.

    U2

The long-awaited confirmed dates of this special run come after U2 dropped a sneak peek in a Super Bowl commercial back in February. The dates at the Sphere mark the band’s first live outing in four years, with Bono and The Edge saying, “U2 hasn’t played live since December 2019 and we need to get back on stage and see the faces of our fans again. And what a unique stage they’re building for us out there in the desert… We’re the right band, ACHTUNG BABY the right album, and Sphere the right venue to take the live experience of music to the next level.”

The Sphere, curated by Madison Square Garden Entertainment, is becoming the next-generation entertainment medium, bringing wonder to the world and redefining the future of live entertainment, where artists, creators, and technologies will create extraordinary experiences, taking storytelling to a new level. The venue will transform the concert-going experience with innovative technologies that include a 16K x 16K LED display inside the main venue bowl that wraps up, over, and around the audience, creating a fully immersive visual environment. The Sphere also has the world’s most advanced concert audio system, featuring crystal-clear audio and 10,000 immersive seats including a system that utilizes deep vibrations so guests can feel the rumble of thunder or a roaring motorcycle.

The group went on to say that “Sphere is more than just a venue, it’s a gallery and U2’s music is going to be all over the walls.” The visuals are so integral to the performances, that The Edge has said this show will only happen at this venue, and the band cannot tour this show outside of that setting.

Acknowledged as one of the best live acts in the world, U2, formed in Dublin in 1978, has since toured the globe countless times, released 14 studio albums, sold over 170 million albums, and won numerous awards, including 22 Grammys and Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience award. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 and have twice been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. U2 has consistently pushed the boundaries of live performance, with ground-breaking stage shows that embrace the latest in technology and innovation. They will be the first musical act at the Sphere but acts such as Phish are in talks to have their own residency coming soon.

Tickets start at $140 and will reflect all-in pricing, this means the ticket price listed is the full out-of-pocket price inclusive of taxes and fees. • Mike Peters of The Alarm bring “Gathering” to Gramercy Theater June 23-24

Mike Peters of legendary Welsh band The Alarm returns to New York City for three nights this month at the Gramercy Theater, June 23-24. These dates following a recent reschedule of May dates.

Part of the original heydey of MTV, Mike has been leading The Alarm for more than 40 years, having continued to make his music independently, without compromise, to present day. The Alarm made their name in the mid-80s, signed to I.R.S. at the same time as REM.

Mike Peters’ new album Forwards will be released on June 2, and features songs written while Mike was holed up in the hospital dealing with a dual leukemia relapse and a case of pneumonia. Writing the new songs – as well as performing them, as they emerged, for hospital staff – reframed his outlook and pulled through, as did his wife, Jules, who was confronted with a breast cancer diagnosis during the same time.

The BBC has done a pair of documentaries about the couple and their big struggle, and maintain their generous spirits, Mike and Jules have renovated a Welsh chapel into a free-of-charge respite for folks undergoing treatment for cancer.

The shows at the Gramercy are a satellite edition of The Gathering, an event that Mike organizes every year in Wales. Mike started The Gathering in 1992 as a way of making sure that The Alarm connected with fans – in Wales – every year despite whatever else he might be doing.

Many US fans traveled to the UK for these events, however, the NYC version of The Gathering was instated as an annual institution of its own as well so as to keep fans from having to make that expensive, arduous journey. The Gathering celebrated 30 years in 2022, and has been held in NYC for over two decades.

The Alarm’s love affair with NYC dates back to their gig with U2 at Pier 84 in 1983. Soon after, they sold out The Ritz on their own and have maintained a really strong relationship with the city even since.

Additionally, a fan from New York (who now runs The Alarm’s Facebook page) traveled to Wales to visit Mike’s home in the winter of 1984. Mike’s mother was floored that someone from NY would travel all the way to Wales to seek out her son that she invited the (then) young lady for Christmas dinner. Stories like this are what make The Gathering a recurring NYC event.

    Tickets are available here.

This comprehensive playlist kicks off with the three new singles released in the run up to Forwards, singles “Next,” “Whatever” and the title track, “Forwards.”

  • Garcia’s Celebrates 10 years Throughout May

Throughout the month of May, The Capitol Theatre’s ‘Inner Sanctum’ bar & venue Garcia’s celebrates 10 years, with a month long lineup of live performances by local and nationally touring artists.

Created in partnership with Jerry Garcia’s family, the official anniversary date falls on Tuesday, May 16, but music will be featured all month long, including SoulShine, Liquorcake, Gimme Gimme Disco and Brown Eyed Women.

Earlier in the month The Rock and Roll Playhouse performed the music of Dave Matthews Band as well as Jerry Garcia tribute Finders Keepers. Mihali performed on Friday, May 12, and will return on Sunday, May 14, with a show at Brooklyn Bowl in between on Saturday.

Garcia’s will also offer a signature anniversary drink all month, the Cherry Jerry, made with Spiced Rum, Cherry Dr Pepper, a splash of lime and of course a cherry on top!

Over the last ten years Garcia’s has presented an eclectic mix of exciting acts such as Dinosaur Jr., Black Pumas, Goose, Yola, Marcus King, Twiddle, Mihali, Melvin Seals, Warren Haynes, Orebolo, Keller Williams, Eric Krasno, Dopapod and many more. As a hub for the development of next generation artists, Garcia’s Talent Buyer & Manager Josh Cohen has booked emerging acts early on such as Daniel Donato, Eggy, Dogs In A Pile, TAZ, Mikaela Davis among others, that have now gone on to playing large scale venues across the country.

Previously the Marketing Director for B.B. King Blues Club, at Garcia’s, Cohen has been focused on nurturing & growing the inclusive environment that is so unique to the historic Capitol Theatre. He likens the venue to a majestic tree in the middle of a village where the locals congregate to dance and celebrate life:

When bands play Garcia’s, we see them summon the energies of The Capitol Theatre and find footing in the rich history of improvisational music and the community through which it lives on. The vibe you find when attending a Garcia’s show is that of an ever-growing, loving family who is eager to welcome new faces with open arms. Whether we come for the music and stay for the vibe or vice versa, we are together, listening to every note and dancing with delight.

    Josh Cohen – Garcia’s Manager

DeadCenter nights have also become a local fixture and staple of the venue, with local Grateful Dead tribute bands playing regularly like Stella Blue’s Band who have played the venue more than any other band, and are nearing their 100th show, 8Track, Dead Meat, Spadtastics, Deadgrass, Grateful BRO, Finders Keepersand SoulShine, an Allman Brothers Band tribute. DeadCenter nights have become such a mainstay, that these upcoming shows will celebrate 1,425 performances to date.

Dream Theater’s most recent release, A View From The Top Of The World, saw the album debuting at #52 on the Billboard 200. The album’s lead track “The Alien” later went on to win the Grammy award for ‘Best Metal Performance’.

Performing ahead of Dream Theater is Canadian musical maverick Devin Townsend, who Metal Injection called a “superb addition to his one-of-a-kind catalog”. Assembled from a barrage of material written during the pandemic, ‘Lightwork’ represents a kind of ‘light in the dark’ while trying to navigate the seemingly endless challenges that life can often present. This tour is Devin’s first North American run since March 2020. Watch the video for ‘Lightworker.’

  • LIMEHOF Announces 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop Concert

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall Of Fame (LIMEHOF) will celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop with a special concert and panel discussion event on Sunday, June 11th at 2 p.m. at the venue’s home base in Stony Brook Village.

The event will feature legendary stars Son of Bazerk, Kool Rock-Ski (of The Fat Boys), A.J. Rock (of J.V.C. F.O.R.C.E.), DJ Jazzy Jay, DJ Johnny Juice (of Public Enemy), Dinco D and Milo in de Dance (both of Leaders of the New School), and special guest Ralph McDaniels (of Video Music Box), as well as other surprise hip-hop guest artists.

“We are honored to pay tribute to the 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop with a live concert performed by some of hip hop’s most influential artists, all from Long Island. It is a testament to Long Island’s prominent and continuing role in hip-hop’s legacy.”

    Ernie Canadeo, LIMEHOF Chairman

Although the Bronx often receives the most credit for the origins of hip-hop, Long Island was very influential in its development. Most Long Island hip-hop performers went to the city to perform. Through the years, LIMEHOF has paid tribute to the hip-hop community by inducting artists from Long Island including LL COOL J, Run-DMC, Public Enemy, Eric B. & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Kurtis Blow, Whodini, Salt-N-Pepa, and EPMD.

DJ Jazzy Jay, DJ Johnny Juice, Kool Rock-Ski, and Son of Bazerk will be performing live at the event. There will also be a panel discussion moderated by Tom Needham, LIMEHOF Vice Chairman and longtime host of the “Sounds of Film Radio Show,” who will be joined by members of JVC Force, Leaders of the New School, DJ Johnny Juice and Ralph McDaniels.

Founded in 2004, the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall Of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical and entertainment heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music and entertainment in all its forms. In 2022, LIMEHOF opened its first Hall of Fame building location in Stony Brook Village. To date, the organization has inducted more than 120 musicians and music industry executives, and also offers education programs and scholarships, and awards to Long Island students and educators.

  • Mingus Big Band Announces “Mingus Monday’s” Residency At Drom

NYC’s Mingus Big Band  has announced their newest residency at Drom, taking place every Monday, beginning June 5th, paying homage to the music of composer/bassist Charles Mingus.

This 14-piece band features new arrangements of Mingus compositions in a larger band format that Mingus was not always able to organize in his lifetime. The dynamic structure encourages deep explorations and ever-evolving ideations of Mingus Music and provides a platform for individual artistic expression. Time Out New York called them “the hippest big band in the universe – robust, earthy, sanctified.”

Drawing from a rotation of the best established and rising musicians, the Mingus Big Band is highly sought-after by festivals and prestigious venues around the world. The band has Grammy nominations spread over eleven recordings, including the Grammy-winning album Live at Jazz Standard. A new album, The Charles Mingus Centennial Sessions, was released in October 2022. The second volume will be released later this year.

The band has held down a weekly residency in New York City for three decades, beginning in 1991 Thursday nights at Fez under Time Cafe, then Joe’s Pub, City Hall, Iridium, and landing now at Drom.

We are thrilled to partner again with Seth Abramson for Mingus Mondays — we shared 15 years at Jazz Standard (and a Grammy!). And back in Mingus’ old Village stomping grounds with the wonderful team at Drom.

Additionally, The Rock and Roll Playhouse will celebrate Mother’s Day weekend at various other venues throughout the country, and a portion of the proceeds will go to Femme House.

Senior Director of The Rock and Roll Playhouse, Stephen Grybowski shares “Live music is the heartbeat of the human soul. It’s truly one of the few things on earth that can unite any two people from any two walks of life, anywhere in the world. To be able to help parents share the music that they love with their children and the next generation is the best part of what I do.” When asked who has more fun, the kids or the parents? “It’s really hard to compare! Children are experiencing this music often for the first time in their lives, so the beauty of that is pretty unrivaled. At the same time, it means so much to a parent to share the music that they grew up with and love so deeply with their children.”

The largest national concert series for families, The Rock and Roll Playhouse was founded in 2014 at its flagship venue, Brooklyn Bowl, by industry pioneer Peter Shapiro, and Amy Striem, a certified Early Childhood and Elementary teacher, who were looking to create opportunities for families to experience live music together in historic music venues. The Playhouse has since performed to hundreds of thousands of kids and their families in over 42 venues across 30 cities, playing music from the most iconic musicians in history to inspire the next generation of children. The program has raised funds for the Can’d Aid Foundation’s Tunes Programs, VH1 Save the Music Foundation, The Rex Foundation, UNICEF, and Keep the Music Alive, as well as thousands of ticket donations to local school fundraisers and charity auctions around the country.

Femme House is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization, fostering more equitable opportunity for women and gender-expansive individuals in the technical and behind the scenes areas of music. The organization fosters future producers, mixers, engineers, DJs, artists, and executives of the industry by providing education and scholarships, cultivating community, propagating visual representation, and offering professional development opportunities. In 2022, Femme House raised over $100,000 to fund scholarship programs, provided six fellows with free gear and specialized music instruction, and doubled down on its commitment to diversifying the deck by ensuring that over half of its lineups have BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ representation.

The Mother’s Day weekend celebration with The Rock and Roll Playhouse is open to all ages and tickets are available now.
