The Soul Rebels are set to perform for four nights at the Blue Note Jazz Club from Sept. 21 through Sept. 24. The group will also be accompanied by a slew of special guests including Rakim & Big Daddy Kane. Comedian Tony Woods, New York icon Ja Rule, and rapper G-Eazy are all scheduled to host a different night.
A product of New Orleans’ rich musical history, The Soul Rebels is an eight-piece brass ensemble. The band has long been admired for its ability to fuse together elements of jazz, soul, hip-hop, pop, and rock. An artistic Swiss Army knife, The Soul Rebels have performed with the likes of Nas, Rakim, Katy Perry, Portugal. The Man, and even Metallica.
The eight-member collective has appeared on multiple major releases including G-Eazy’s “When You’re Gone” ft. Lil Wayne and Dave East and Nas’ “Godfather 4.” The ensemble’s 2019 album Poetry in Motion impressed listeners and spawned appearances on The Late Show and NPR’s Tiny Desk.
Performing a Blue Note Jazz Club residency is the holy grail of artistic experiences for our band. This opportunity brings together our favorite artists including our long-time friends and collaborators Rakim and G-Eazy and marks our debut performances with Big Daddy Kane and Ja Rule. This Blue Note engagement is truly monumental within our career and in culture. We are going big this year for the 50th anniversary of hip hop.
Drummer and co-founder, Lumar Leblanc.
The Blue Note Jazz Club continues to attract artists from a multitude of musical backgrounds. A Manhattan staple, the institution has been up and running since 1981. The Soul Rebels will be joined onstage by an all-star cast of jazz musicians. Louis Cato, Ray Angry, Elena Pinderhughes, and James Carter are all scheduled to be part of the band’s four-night run of performances.
Blue Note owns and operates New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club, Sony Hall, and Arthur’s Tavern; D.C.’s The Howard Theatre; and Blue Note Jazz Clubs Worldwide, which includes venues in Milan, Italy; Honolulu, HI; Beijing and Shanghai, China; Tokyo and Nagoya, Japan; Napa, CA; and Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil.

Colin Barkell and his band King Vaudeville are set to perform two concerts at the Little York Pavilion in Preble on Sept. 6 and 14. Todd Meredith and special guest Kyle Lacy are also scheduled to appear. The shows are part of Cortland Repertory Theatre’s (CRT) 51st summer of programming at the venue.
Since appearing at CRT in 2019, Colin Barkell has gone on to make his Broadway debut and form the group King Vaudeville. His performance will feature impassioned covers of classic Johnny Cash, Elvis, and Chuck Berry tunes. Barkell will also mix in some of his original music, which reflects his upbeat personality.
Todd Meredith is no stranger to CRT either, appearing in Buddy! The Buddy Holly Story back in 2013. The Albany artist also performed in Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash and Million Dollar Quartet. Meredith and guest guitarist Kyle Lacy will perform an acoustic mix of classic and contemporary pop songs. With both musicians being prolific songwriters, the show will also include some of their own work.

Dr. James Palmer, associate director of theatre at SUNY Cortland, opened the Cortland Repertory Theatre in 1972. Since then, the organization has only grown, expanding to downtown in 2010. Past CRT performers and volunteers include Academy Award-winner Holly Hunter, Tony-winning director Joe Mantello, and renowned actor Stephen Borgardis.
Tickets for both concerts are available here, at the CRT downtown Box office, or by calling 800-427-6160. Click here for more information about these and upcoming shows and events at CRT Downtown this fall.
The Joe Marcinek Band will take the state at Iridium Jazz Club in NYC on Aug. 26. The evening will also feature multiple guest musicians who look to compliment the vibrant and engaging sounds of the band.
Uniquely, the Joe Marcinek band is a carousel of different musicians and set lists. Each performance is made to be its own individual experience. The music varies from the psychedelic tones of the Grateful Dead to the brassy sound of Chicago Blues.
Baltimore’s renowned Dennis Chambers will be on drums during the evening. A longtime fixture in the East Coast jazz scene, Chambers began performing at just six years old. Despite lacking formal training, he has gone on to share the stage with the likes of John Scofield, Santan, Mike Stern, and Parliament/Funkadelic. As a teenager the drummer was recruited to be a part of the storied Sugar Hill Label. Chambers will be joined by legendary harmonica figure Howard Levy. Backing them all up is percussionist Jason Hann, who cut his teeth with The String Cheese Incident.
Lending his keys to the night is jazz pianist Jesus Molina. The Columbian-born artist has made a name for himself in the world of jazz. Originally a saxophonist, Molina transitioned from saxophone to piano as a teen. Cincinnati vocalist Reilly Comisar and bassist Ola Timothy will also be performing during the evening.

After a scary health scare, pop superstar Madonna had to postpone her upcoming The Celebration Tour. However, she just announced that most of her North American dates have been rescheduled for the end and beginning of the year, including her MSG and Barclays Center dates.
Her originally scheduled performance at Madison Square Garden on Aug. 27 had to, unfortunately, be canceled, however, to make up for it, an additional date at the Barclays Center was added on Dec. 16. Beginning Aug. 29, ticket holders for the previously scheduled Aug. 27 show at MSG will be able to purchase tickets for the new Dec. 16 show ahead of the public sale for those remaining tickets on Sept. 1. Those who purchased tickets to the canceled date will be refunded, and Ticketmaster will then provide all affected fans with a dedicated link and a unique code based on the quality of their previous seat locations to purchase tickets to the new date.
The original tour dates were postponed following Madonnaâs hospitalization in June for a serious bacterial infection. She has since made a remarkable recovery.

Former bassist and singer of Deep PurpleGlenn Hughes, known to millions as the ‘Voice of Rock,’ a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and the front man for rock super group Black Country Communion, has just announced a tour devoted to celebrating music from BURN and other classic hits from Deep Purple’s rich back catalog – during a tour that will mostly see Hughes co-headlining with notable guitarist Yngqie Malmsteen. The tour across the U.S. will stop in several cities across New York, including Hudson Falls, Poughkeepsie, and New York City.
Billed as “Glenn Hughes Performs The 50th Anniversary of Deep Purple’s BURN Live”, Hughes will perform classic hits from the legendary album, and the addition of Deep Purple MKIII and MKIV songs. Glenn’s band will feature Soren Andersen (guitar), Ash Sheehan (drums) and Ed Roth (keyboards).
“It was 50 years ago, in the summer of 1973, that the BURN album by Deep Purple was written at Clearwell castle in Gloucestershire UK,” reminisces Hughes. “It was recorded in October in Montreux, Switzerland.”
Continues Hughes, “We all became one in this centuries old castle in the UK countryside, it felt like Deep were a new band, with David (Coverdale) and I as new members, we couldn’t wait to start working on new song. The atmosphere was electric, in such amazing surroundings.”
“All the songs on Burn were written in the crypt/dungeon, underneath the great hall. We worked on a new song every day, and we were in the flow. Musically we would play, and work out ideas, and David and I would come up with vocal melodies that would later have lyrics. I remember it like it was yesterday.”
“As you could imagine, Ritchie Blackmore was in full prankster mode, Jon had warned me, and he rigged my room one night with a speaker that was hidden, and had ghostly voices delivered to my bedside.”
“The title track was the last song to be written. We came back from the pub, and went down into the crypt, and magic happened.”
Concludes Hughes, “It’s time to celebrate BURN, and I’m really looking forward to seeing you!”
Glenn Hughes Biography
Glenn Hughes is an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the MK 3 line up of Deep Purple. He spent the formative years of his career as the beloved bassist and vocalist of the group and performed on the classic albums Burn (1974), Stormbringer (1974) and Come Taste The Band (1975).
The vocalist/bass guitarist/songwriter is a true original. No other rock musician has carved such a distinctive style blending the finest elements of hard rock, soul and funk. Stevie Wonder once called Hughes his favorite white singer. The first important band Hughes was a member of that achieved notable success was Trapeze.
In 1973, Hughes joined Deep Purple. The trailblazing hard-rock legends had just weathered the departure of vocalist Ian Gillan and bass guitarist Roger Glover, but guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice continued with the addition of Hughes and David Coverdale.
Since 1992, Hughes has toured extensively in Europe, Japan, and South America in support of solo albums. He’s recorded four studio albums with the multi-award-winning supergroup Black Country Communion featuring guitarist Joe Bonamassa, keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater) and drummer Jason Bonham, son of the late Led Zeppelin legend John Bonham.
In 2016 he released his critically acclaimed solo album Resonate featuring the rock radio hit “Heavy” and in 2017 he released Black Country Communion’s fourth studio album BCCIV to ecstatic reviews.
In 2019, Glenn joined the Dead Daises as their lead singer and bass guitarist, recorded two albums, HolyGround (2021) and Radiance (2022) and toured the world.
John Medeski, Joe Russo, and Marc Ribot will be holding a benefit concert for the Music Workers Alliance in the Sultan Room in Brooklyn on Sept. 12. This is not the first time this trio has formed, as they originally came together for the Brooklyn Comes Alive event in 2021.
John Medeski is a jazz keyboard player and composer, gaining popularity as a member of Medeski Martin & Wood. The band, formed in 1991, is known for its “avant-groove” style of jazz fusion. Medeski has remained active through numerous side projects in the 2010s and 2020s.
Joe Russo is a drummer who has played alongside numerous musicians, including Bob Weir and Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead during his time with Further. He founded his band, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, in 2013.
Marc Ribot is a guitarist and composer who has explored many genres through his work as a session musician. He has released over 25 albums of his own over his career and currently works with many groups, including Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dogs.
The Music Workers Alliance seeks to empower members of the music industry through collective action. It was formed in 2019 as a reaction to the undiscussed plight of working musicians and DJs in local policy. The organization helped organize relief for musicians struggling with unemployment during the COVID-19 pandemic. It often collaborates with other organizations with aligned goals.
Doors open at 7:00 p.m., and the show ends at 10:00 p.m. More information on the Music Workers Alliance can be found on their website. Tickets for their Sultan Room performance can be found here.

Although the summer is ending soon, the live music scene in Rochester is still as rockin’ as ever. Here are five eclectic picks to keep it going and close out your month in high style.
Providing modern arrangements of old, forgotten, perhaps nearly extinct Italian folk music, Alla Boara will likely sound like nothing you have heard before. Certainly it won’t be what you’re getting at the local Italian eateries! Put on by the good people at the Bop Shop, you know this show is going to be good.
This Chicago trio roll out some fuzzed up psychedelic rock with a minimalist aesthetic. Local boys Leus Zeus will give a rare and anticipated performance in the opening slot.
Tickets are $10/$15dos and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.
The Annual Fairport Music Festival takes place across six stages for two days smack dab in the middle of the village of Fairport, bringing together incredible local talent with some national acts. Tickets are $15/$18dos and music starts around 9 p.m.
Alumni of the Rochester International Jazz Fest, The Bad Plus reinvented what it means to be a piano trio, and now they’ve reinvented themselves for the second time. Gone is Ethan Iverson on piano, gone is his replacement Orrin Evans, and in are Ben Monder on guitar and Chris Speed on saxophone. The core of bassist Reid Anderson and drummer Dave King remains as does the band’s ethos and songbook.
The co-led, cooperative NY music project, Elysium Furnace Works is set to welcome the legendary creative forces Eugene Chadbourne and Jim McHugh in the Fall. The duo will perform at the VBI Theatre of Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center in Poughkeepsie on Sept. 14 at 8:00 PM.
Although this performance will not be the first time that the artists have performed as a dynamic duo, the musicians are both stars in their own right. Chadbourne is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, author, and all-around creative artist having performed on over 358 albums with artists ranging from John Zorn and Jello Biafra to the Violent Femmes and Camper Van Beethoven. His genre knows no bounds, originally exploring the conventions of rock and pop and later switching over to the bottleneck blues. On the other hand, McHugh took to rock music and stuck there, being an essential part of the New York City-based ensemble The Sunwatchers. The artist himself is an incredibly talented guitarist and vocalist whose contributions have shaped the band’s sound.
Together, the pair is unmatched, from their intimate live performances to their nine-track record Bad Scene released back in 2021. Eugene Chadbourne and Jim McHugh’s performance scheduled for Sept. 14 will see the duo perform original music, covers, and so much more. Interested parties can get their tickets here.
