  • UB40 Anniversary Tour “UB45” Stops at The Space at Westbury

    Reggae-pop band UB40 is celebrating its 45th anniversary with its “UB45” summer tour throughout July, which will stop at The Space at Westbury on July 6.

    The band will perform their hits “Red Red Wine,” “Food For Thought,” and “(I Can’t Help) Falling In Love With You,” among others, on their anniversary tour, in addition to being joined by special guests such as Maxi Priest, Inner Circle, Third World, and Big Mountain. Concurrently, UB40 will release a new album this summer, titled UB45, with new songs and reworked classics, and a yet-to-be-announced release date.

    Guitarist/vocalist Robin Campbell said of UB40’s US tour, “We love playing the U.S., and celebrating our 45th year and having a new album makes our return even more exciting.”

    UB40 was originally formed in 1978 in Birmingham, England, and its current members consist of Jimmy Brown (drums), Robin Campbell (guitar/vocals), Earl Falconer (bass/vocals), Norman Lamont Hassan (percussion/vocals), Martin Meredith (keyboards/WX7/saxophone), Tony Mullings (keyboards), Laurence Parry (trumpet/flugelhorn/trombone), Ian Thompson (saxophone) – and Matt Doyle (lead vocals.) Doyle only joined the band recently, taking over for a retired Duncan Campbell after Doyle’s group, KIOKO, opened for UB40 at The Royal Albert Hall in 2018, and later supported them on UB40’s subsequent UK tour and European tours. UB40 released their debut studio album, Signing Off, in 1980, and since then have released a total of 20 studio albums, most recently 2021’s Bigga Baggariddim.

    UB40’s 45th-anniversary summer tour is in support of their upcoming studio album, UB45.     The Space at Westbury originally opened as Westbury Movie Theater in 1927, with a screening of Hula, starring Clara Bow, while The University of Maryland Collegian’s Band thrilled the audience with a spectacular performance. One of the six theaters built by Salvatore Calderone in Nassau County, the Westbury Theatre eventually closed due to a decline in patronage in the late 70s. Eight years ago, Cyrus Hakakian and his partners saved the Westbury Theater from demolition, and the venue now enters a new chapter of its illustrious history as The Space at Westbury.

  • MSG Entertainment Announces ‘Sphere Experiences’ Debuting This Fall

    Madison Square Garden Entertainment announced the debut of “Sphere Experiences,” one of its core content categories to be featured at Sphere, the company’s next-generation entertainment medium opening this fall in Las Vegas.

    “Sphere Experiences” will launch this fall with a first-of-its-kind immersive production – Postcard from Earth. “We are redefining the future of entertainment through Sphere,” said James L. Dolan, Executive Chairman and CEO, MSG Entertainment. “Sphere provides a new medium for directors, artists, and brands to create experiences that cannot be seen or told anywhere else, and Sphere Experiences are just one of the ways we will use the venue’s technologies to engage the senses and transport audiences to places both real and imagined. Postcard from Earth will set a new bar for multi-sensory storytelling possibilities, and we look forward to having audiences experience it at Sphere this fall.”

    Sphere is a next-generation entertainment medium, bringing wonder to the world and redefining the future of live entertainment, where artists, creators, and technologies will create extraordinary experiences, taking storytelling to a new level. The venue will host “Sphere Experiences” from leading Hollywood directors, concerts and residencies from the world’s biggest artists, including U2 who hinted there will be a residency coming soon, and premier marquee events. The first Sphere venue is currently under construction in Las Vegas, expected to open in fall 2023.

    The Postcard from Earth event will feature the new technology Sphere has been putting together for eventgoers. Audience members will be transported to a new world for approximately 60 minutes, with the world’s most advanced concert audio system, featuring crystal-clear audio that is the same for every guest, however, some people may hear different things, like different languages or instruments, truly customizing the listening experience. There are 4D technologies enhancing the experience, with 10,000 immersive seats including a system that utilizes deep vibrations so guests can feel the rumble of thunder or a roaring motorcycle as well as environmental effects like changing temperatures or familiar scents. The “Sphere Experiences” also feature the highest resolution LED screen on earth at 16K x 16K, making guests feel like they have traveled to a new world.

    Production of Postcard from Earth is currently underway and will offer a unique perspective on the beauty of life on earth, debuting to the public at Sphere at The Venetian in October.   • The Glove Theatre April Shows include Rock Band Flame, “Nobody’s Fool” Screening

    The Glove Theatre, over a century old and a hidden treasure in downtown Gloversville, has recently reopened for performances, bringing music and movies together in the coming weeks.

    Designed in 1913 by Linn Kinne of Utica for Cady & Dartch, wtih a marquee added in 1939, the 800-seat Glove Theatre has historically shows an array of performances, including vaudeville, concerts, and movies, and was, during the 1950s, one of the largest theater venues in Fulton and Montgomery Counties. Since 1995, the theater has been maintained by a local group of volunteers and most recently, The Glove has hosted performances from artists such as Sawyer Fredricks and Beatle Mania.

    After a 10-year absence, rock band Flame will perform at The Glove in celebration of Autism Awareness Month and the band’s 20th anniversary, on Saturday, April 15.

    Flame will take The Glove Theatre Mainstage for a special one-night-only performance, but the rest of April will be a busy month for the band. Throughout the rest of April, after The Glove Theatre show, Flame will perform at Schenectady High School, West Sand Lake Elementary, and SUNY Cobleskill.

    Formed in 2003, Flame consists of Nick Robinson, Andrew Carpenter, Adrienne Phillips, David LaGrange, Joseph Magliocca, Karl Blanchard, Shawn Lehr, Michelle King, and Debbie Woodruff. The global cover band performs the hit favorites of today plus the classics and initially gained notoriety after appearances on Good Morning America in 2009, and in People Magazine in 2013.

    Made up entirely of disabled musicians, Flame has played to sold-out shows across the world, at venues such as the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame, the House of Blues, to Athens, Greece, and Carpi, Italy, and they are billed as “Your Hometown World-Famous Band.”

    Flame is a part of the Arc/Lexington outreach program, which has said of the band: “These musicians connect with people of all ages and backgrounds like no other, from singing children to dancing executives. They give parents of children with disabilities hope that it is possible to have their own child achieve great things, and even more importantly, have a fun and fulfilling life like those in the band. Their success has helped change perceptions of those with disabilities as well as increased awareness and acceptance of people of all kinds “putting the ability into disability”.  

    Then on April 19, The Glove Theatre will present a film screening of Nobody’s Fool, an adaption of the book of the same name by Fulton County Native and Pulitzer Award Winning Author Richard Russo, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. as part of an ongoing Love The Glove Film Series, sponsored by the Perrott, Peck, and Blackmon Families.

    Nobody’s Foul was written in 1993 and became the first of Russo’s novels to be made into a film adaption in 1994, with a sequel, Everybody’s Fool, following in 2016. Similarly, the April 19 event at The Glove Theatre will be the first film screening for Nobody’s Fool. The film adaption stars Paul Newman as Donald “Sully” Sullivan, Jessica Tandy as Beryl Peoples in her final role before her death, Bruce Willis as Carl Roebuck, Melanie Griffith as Toby Roebuck, and an up-and-coming Upstate New York Native Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Officer Raymer. It was Paramount’s last production before being sold to Viacom the same year. Newman received considerable praise for his role, winning Best Actor at the 45th Berlin International Film Festival, the 29th National Society of Film Critics Awards, and the 60th New York Film Critics Circle Awards.

    Nobody’s Fool is set in the fictional community of North Bath, based on the Saratoga County city of Ballston Spa, just east of Gloversville, where Russo grew up. In the book and movie’s narrative, North Bath is overshadowed by the neighboring Schuyler Springs, based on Saratoga Springs, which has historically overshadowed Ballston Spa. Fulton County was considered for filming locations, but the film ended up being shot in the Hudson Valley, near Beacon, Poughkeepsie, Kingston, and Hudson.

    Upon hearing about the screening, Russo said, “I am very excited for my film to be screened at the Glove Theatre, having watched so many movies there in my youth.” Russo Russo used his notoriety previously to help the Gloversville Public Library (a Carnegie Library) with their 2015 Capital Campaign. To honor his literary legacy to the community, Trustees, and staff of the library will be available to sign members up for a library card at both free screenings of this beloved film.

  • Cohoes Music Hall Presents Regional Premiere of ‘The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical’

    Playhouse Stage Company announced the regional premiere of the hit musical The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, featuring teens from the Playhouse Stage Academy training program, at the Cohoes Music Hall.

    The Playhouse Stage Company has been producing free summer musicals at Albany’s Park Playhouse in Washington Park since 1989, producing musicals year-round at Cohoes Music Hall since 2016, and has since become manager of the historic Spindle City venue in 2020. They are celebrating their 35th anniversary with a great lineup of events for the season. The company makes theater an all-inclusive art form by providing free and affordable admission at each production, welcoming people from all walks of life and socio-economic backgrounds. The company also provides arts education programs to young people in the community with Playhouse Stage Academy.

    The Cohoes Music Hall opened its door in 1874 in Cohoes. It was restored in 1974 to become what it is today, a historic music hall with a great lineup of events. In late December of last year, the venue was awarded $1.88 million in funding through New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation grants, transforming it into an energy-efficient building. The Lightning Thief production begins on April 13 and runs to the 23, reuniting Director Chuck Kraus, Choreographer Ashley Simone Kirchner, and Musical Director Brandon Jones, who has worked on more than a dozen teen productions at both Albany’s Park Playhouse and Cohoes Music Hall for Playhouse Stage Company.

    The Lightning Thief is a rock musical adapted from the best-selling young adult novel by Rick Riordan of the same name. It was first produced by Theatreworks USA as a one-hour “theatre for young audiences” production in 2014, in 2017 an expanded two-act version premiered at the Lucille Lortel Theatre and was a critically acclaimed hit, and in 2019, there was a limited engagement on Broadway. The show features a thrilling rock score with music and lyrics by Rob Rikicki and a book by Joe Tracz.

    The novel follows Percy Jackson, a troubled young man struggling with dyslexia and ADHD, who finds himself expelled from five schools in a few years. He comes to learn he is the half-blood son of a
    Greek God and finds himself at “Camp Half-Blood,” where he and his friends are sent on a quest by the Oracle of Delphi to uncover the truth behind the theft of Zeus’s lightning bolt. “The Lightning Thief is an epic story that is ideal to be performed by our gifted teen students,” said Owen Smith, Playhouse Stage Company’s Producing Artistic Director. “Fans of the book series will revel in the loyalty to the original
    book, while the average audience member will be enthralled not only by the cast of colorful characters and rock score but also how personal and relatable the story is.”

    The cast is led by AJ Halsey (Percy Jackson) and Joshua Hoyt (Grover), who received strong reviews for their performances in last summer’s The Wedding Singer at Park Playhouse, as well as Molly Kantrowitz
    (Annabeth Chase) who is playing her first principal character for Playhouse Stage. The cast features eighteen of the area’s most talented teen performing artists, hailing from all corners of the Capital Region. Those who have graduated from the Playhouse Stage Academy have gone on to study in top collegiate theatre programs, and to appear on Broadway, film and television, or national tours.

    The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical plays April 13 through 23, 2023, at Cohoes Music Hall.   • Fourth Annual Free Dead in the Park Benefit Concert Set for May

    The 4th annual Free Dead in the Park Benefit Concert, presented by the Capitol Theatre and Rythm Premium Cannabis, is scheduled for May 16 at 4:30 p.m. at Central Park. The concert series, which began in 2018, supports Riverkeeper, a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection of the Hudson River and its tributaries. Stella follows in the footsteps of the Grateful Dead, taking the same stage at the Naumberg Bandshell in Central Park.

    Stella Blue’s Band has been performing for more than a decade, and is made up of Bill Bonacci (lead guitar, vocals,) Steve Liesman (rhythm guitar, vocals,) Greg Solomon (bass), Ken Aigen (keyboards), Ron Cohen (drums, vocals), and Amy Stahlin (vocals.) First formed in 2009 to recreate the experience of a Grateful Dead show, Stella was the first band chosen for residency at Garcia’s at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, which has become the band’s homebase. The band plays regularly at New York City venues such as the Brooklyn Bowl and The Cutting Room, among several other venues in the tri-state area.

    Free Dead in the Park began in 2018, after a fan obtained a $25 permit for Stella Blue’s Band to play in the bandshell to honor the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s concert at the venue. In the years since it has evolved into a fundraising event for Riverkeeper. “Free Dead in the Park is such an exciting and significant event each year because it connects music fans with the environment and gives them the opportunity to make a difference in their community by helping protect the Hudson River,’’ said Tracy Brown, president of Riverkeeper.

    Riverkeeper is a member-supported organization that preserves and restores the Hudson River from source to sea and safeguards drinking water supplies through advocacy rooted in community partnerships, science, and law. The non-profit originally began as the Hudson River Fisherman’s Association in 1966, when the Hudson River was dying from pollution and neglect. Today, Riverkeeper continues its fight, seeking out polluters and teaming with citizen scientists and activists to reclaim the Hudson River.

    The show will be produced by G4D Productions with support from Best Instrument Rentals. The event would not be possible without support from the NYC Parks Department, which has helped to make the concert a success. The show also has support from a group of committed private contributors like the Morgan Le Fay Dreams Foundation and Friends of Free Dead in the Park.

  • Regina Spektor Confirms Summer Tour Dates with Three Shows in New York

    Acclaimed musician Regina Spektor is going on a 2023 summer tour, which includes performances at three music venues in New York: the Kodak Center in Rochester on Aug. 1, SummerStage in Central Park on Aug. 24, and the West Hampton Beach Performing Arts (WHBAC) on Aug. 25.

    The tour comes a year after the release of Spektor’s latest studio album, Home, before and after. Additionally, the performer will make an appearance at Mikhail Baryshnikov’s 75th birthday celebration at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park in Tivoli, New York, alongside Laurie Anderson, Diana Krall, and Kaoru Watanabe.

    Russian-Jewish-American singer, songwriter, and pianist Regina Spektor, whose genres range from Anti-folk, Indie-Pop, and alternative rock, was born in Moscow, Russia, and since moving to the United States, has made musical waves in New York. Spektor has received a sign on the Bronx Walk of Fame, and Mayor Bill Diblasio proclaimed June 11, 2019, as “Regina Spektor Day.” She has been making music for over 20 years, with her debut studio album, 11:11, being released in 2001, and 2022’s Home, before and after marked her eighth studio release.

    The album’s supporting single, “Up the Mountain,” has been praised by several media outlets, including the New York Times, which wrote, “It’s mystical and earthy, moving from tolling piano to implacable beat, with strings and horns ganging up.” Grammy-nominated Spektor first saw commercial success with the RIAA Gold-certified LP, Begin to Hope, which includes the singles “On the Radio,” “Better”, “Samson,” and “Fidelity,” which climbed the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

  • Madlib Teams with Meyhem Lauren and DJ Muggs on ‘Szechuan Capital’ + New Project

    Hip Hop’s underground scene will be getting a jolt as Queens rapper — and television star — Meyhem Lauren is teaming up with legendary DJ, Cypress Hill’s own DJ Muggs and one of the best producers of his generation in Madlib. The trio have announced an album titled Champagne for Breakfast set for release on April 7 through Soul Assassins Records.

    In anticipation for the project they’ve released the brooding album cut “Szechuan Capital.” Featuring fellow Queens-bred rapper/actor Action Bronson, “Szechuan Capital” is the name of a restaurant in Flushing Queens. “It closed down around 20 years ago,” Meyhem remarked. “It was a special spot in Flushing and Action is a special human from Flushing so it all made sense; at least to me.”

    Meyhem and Action Bronson share a personal relationship as part of the hip hop/art collective Smart Crew. Additionally, Meyhem stars in Bronson’s food documentary series F*ck, That’s Delicious. However, their true ties are as cultural vanguards for the borough of Queens. Whether it be through their graffiti, music or being food aficionados, they pay ode the historic borough. “Szechuan Capital” is no different, as it is an ode to the lesser-known cultural landmarks that have bred some of hip hop’s best. With DJ Muggs and Madlib on production the essence of the culture pushing the artist will always be conveyed.

    After all, the fabled producers have spent the last few years fortifying their legacies. A founding member of Cypress Hill and the Producer of House Of Pain’s “Jump Around,” the Grammy-nominated producer has collaborated with a whose-who in hip hop’s underground scene.  In the last few years alone he has released projects with Mach-Hommy, Roc Marciano, Yelawolf, Rome Streetz and Jay Worthy; and he’s currently putting the finishing touches on the forthcoming Soul Assassins 4 album. Meanwhile, Champagne for Breakfast will be Madlib’s third project of the year. The legendary producer has already released Liberation 2 with Talib Kweli and In The Beginning, Vol 3 with Declaime this calendar year. 

    In like manner, this latest album will add to the extensive collaborative history between Meyhem, Muggs and Madlib. Meyhem has previous projects with DJ Muggs 2017’s Gems From The Equinox, 2018’s Frozen Angels and 2019’s Members Only.

  • Keyanna Hutchinson announces “Plugged and Unplugged” at the Greenwich House Music School 

    The gifted Keyanna Hutchinson announced her Uncharted concert, Plugged and Unplugged, at the Greenwich House Music School.  The show will begin at 8pm on Thursday, April 13.

    Keyanna Hutchinson is a Brooklyn-born versatile musician. The multi-talented artist uses her Caribbean lineage, love for music, conservatory training, experience with rock, jazz, R&B and experimental composition tours as inspiration. While known for her mastery of the guitar, Hutchinson is also a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer.

    Hutchinson reveals that the efforts of Terri Lynne Carrington, Lizz Wright, and Brandon Ross of Harriet Tubman have motivated her throughout this journey. Her mentors inspired her to craft a sound that pays homage and to propagate the roots of black and indigenous sound. She also is a recent awardee of the prestigious Next Jazz Legacy fellowship through New Music USA. 

    Plugged and Unplugged will feature Hutchison’s many talents for a new project that will eventually be released as a debut album. The album will fuse her love of live performance with recent explorations into electronic composition and remix culture. In its ninth year at Greenwich House Music School, the Uncharted residency and concert series provides a resource for New York-based musicians to develop original material, foster new collaborations, and premiere first-look projects in an intimate concert setting. 

    Greenwich House Music School was founded in 1902 and currently offers innovative programs in arts and education, older adult services, behavioral, mental health, and workforce development. The music school strives to help communities by taking thoughtful risks, piloting new models and approaches, and implementing effective solutions.   • Tears for Fears Summer Tour includes shows at MSG, SPAC and Bethel Woods

    Tears for Fears are going on the road this summer for a 2023 North American tour, which includes stops at three music venues in New York. The iconic band will perform at Madison Square Garden (MSG) on June 26, then make their way over to Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) on July 2, followed by their last New York performance at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts on July 5.

    The performances support Tears for Fears’ The Tipping Point Tour Part II, and they will be joined by special guest Cold War Kids.

    Tears for Fears, originating in Bath, Somerset, England, composes music by musicians Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal, and former members include Manny Elias and Ian Stanley. The band’s career spans over 40 years, with their first album, The Hurting, debuting in 1983, supported by their first single “Suffer the Hurting.” They have since released seven studio albums, most recently The Tipping Point in 2022, their first album since 2004’s Everybody Loves a Happy Ending. Their debut album birthed the hit “Mad World”, the band’s first international success, inspiring several cover versions, most recently by Demi Lovato on the singer’s 2021 album Dancing with the Devil… the Art of Starting Over. Tears for Fears has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide and performed on countless sold-out shows.

  • Pixies will be Joined by Modest Mouse on the Third Leg of their North American Tour

    Indie rock kingpins Pixies will be joined by Modest Mouse for the third leg of their North American tour, which includes performances at three New York venues. The bands will perform twice at The Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City on Aug. 21 and 22, the Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown on Aug. 25, and the Artpark Amphitheater in Lewiston on Aug. 28. The upcoming tour is in support of Pixie’s latest studio album, Doggerel.

    Pixies originated in Boston, Massatuchetts, and consists of David Lovering, (drums, percussion, backing vocals) Black Francis, (lead and backing vocals, rhythm guitar, acoustic guitar) Paz Lenchantin, (bass, violin, backing and lead vocals), and Joey Santiago (lead guitar, backing vocals.) They have been performing for over 30 years, and their debut album, Surfer Rosa, was released in 1988, supported by their lead single “Gigantic.” Over the course of their career, they have released a total of eight studio albums, most recently 2022’s Doggerel, which their upcoming tour supports. The band disbanded in 1993, and reunited in 2004, with their first release since reuniting being 2014’s Indie Cindy, their fifth studio album. They are known for being “one-of-a-kind” performers, due to their concerts having no pre-determined set lists, and whatever song plays next is what “feels right.”

    New Musical Express (NME) called Doggerel “the most inventive since their reunion nearly two decades ago.”

    Tickets to see the Pixies perform with Modest Mouse on their North American tour, and all other venues, go on sale Friday, March 31 at 10 a.m.
