  • Geneva Music Festival Announces 2023 Theme, Dates

Known as the Finger Lakes premiere summer kick-off event, the Geneva Music Festival has announced their 2023 season theme and dates.

The festival was founded in 2011 by Geneva native and violinist Geoffrey Herd with fellow Genevans violinist Eliot Heaton and cellist Hannah Collins. Originally a weekend of chamber music for their hometown, the festival has grown over the years. Now in its 13th season, the festival attracts audiences of all regions to hear outstanding musicians from the world’s stages.

While still rooted in the chamber music repertoire, performances now include jazz, contemporary, and bluegrass music. Festival musicians include leading classical soloists, multiple Grammy Award-winning artists, members of the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society, and faculty from Yale, Juilliard, the Colburn School, and the Cleveland Institute of Music.

This years theme will be “Gods, Myths and the Divine” from May 21 to June 11. GMF artists-in-residence and visiting artists will explore the connection between music and experiences of uplifting our spirit, seeking something larger in the universe, or contemplating anew our place here on earth. This 8-concert series explores composers throughout history who have been inspired by their religious beliefs or by the universal themes embedded in cultural myths to create music of rich meaning and beauty.

“I’m excited to share our 2023 theme, Gods, Myths, and the Divine, through which we will explore musical masterpieces inspired by composers’ religious and spiritual beliefs. Walking through Milan last summer, I was struck by the inimitable architecture of the Duomo di Milano and found myself pondering how many of the world’s greatest pieces of art grow naturally out of their creator’s religious beliefs.

    Festival Director Geoffrey Herd

The Geneva Music Festival’s mission is to entertain, inspire, and nurture a lifelong appreciation of chamber and other musical genres in Finger Lakes communities. They strive to present world-class artists that engage audiences of all ages, including populations with little exposure to music of this caliber.  Purposeful engagement with young people is an integral part of the Festival’s programming and children 18 years and younger are admitted free to all public concerts.

A full lineup and schedule will be availible in the coming weeks. Please visit the festivals website for more information.

  • The Governors Ball 2023 – Lizzo, Odesza, Kendrick Lamar Headline Move to Flushing Meadows

The Governors Ball is moving down the block in 2023; shifting over to Flushing Meadows Corona Park for a stacked weekend headlined by Lizzo, Odesza, and Kendrick Lamar. The storied NYC music festival has had several homes over the years, spending the last two years in the parking lot of Citi Field. From June 9-11, the festival pops up in one of the most iconic green spaces in the city, host to two World’s Fairs and the annual US Open tennis tournament.

    The Governors Ball 2023 Lineup

The Governors Ball 2023 lineup leans heavily into rap, hip hop, and R&B, bookending the weekend with performances by Lizzo and Kendrick Lamar. Friday and Sunday also feature performances from the School of Rock Queens and Brooklyn, respectively. The performance-based music schools provide lessons to people of all ages and will be presenting their house bands for two very special performances at the festival. Other New York natives on the lineup include Pusha T (Bronx), Joey Bada$$, and Phony Ppl (Brooklyn).

A music festival that calls Queens home has to meet certain requirements. The “World’s Borough” by itself is one of the most diverse metro areas anywhere in the world. Roosevelt Avenue sits right outside the festival grounds and it is estimated that nearly 300 languages and dialects are spoken in the neighborhoods Roosevelt cuts through. This year, The Governors Ball is partnering with the Queens Night Market to present a wide array of cultural vendors from Queens to be featured inside the festival. Fans will be able to sample the food, art, and cultural diversity of the borough while navigating the festival grounds in Flushing Meadows.

The Citi cardmember presale starts today, Jan. 17, and runs through Thursday, Jan. 19. You can also register for the fan presale, which begins on Jan. 19. Head over to GovBall.com to signup for the fan presale.

Stay tuned to NYS Music for more information about the festival, including the dates for the general sale which are yet to be announced. In the meantime, you can relive the 2022 edition (and the last at Citi Field) by checking out our Friday, Saturday, and Sunday recaps.

  • Inaugural Black Star Line Festival in Ghana Highlights Artists of African Diaspora

The 2023 Black Star Line Festival, hosted by Chance the Rapper and Vic Mensa made its historic, inaugural debut in Accra, Ghana on Friday, January 6. The all star concert featured celebrities such as Erykah Badu, Dave Chappelle, T-Pain, Jeremih, Sarkodie, Tobe Nwigwe, Asakaa Boys, M.anifest and more.

More than 52,000 fans united at Black Star Square in Accra to enjoy an outstanding concert combining music, art, and culture. Prior to the performance, there was a week of events and panels at cultural centers throughout Accra. The free gatherings provided opportunities for education, enrichment and cultural diffusion.

    Black Star Line Festival

The festival aims to improve the connection between Black people, artists of the Diaspora and the globe with the continent. The Black Star Square is a remembrance of the political freedom that was fought for and won by Ghanaians in 1957. Ghana was the first Sub-Saharan African country to fight for independence from colonialism. Under the leadership of its first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, several continents followed in the footsteps of Ghana. Dr. Nkrumah was inspired by the Jamaican-Born activist  Marcus Garvey. The revolutionary believed in a free Africa and a global connection between the people of the continent and Black people globally.

The Black Star Line Festival is more than just a celebration of Black culture and music, it’s a chance for the Diaspora to come together as a community and remind ourselves of the power that lies within us. It’s an opportunity to honor the legacy of those who came before us, and to inspire and uplift each other. It’s a historic event and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the Black Star Line Festival.

    Chance the Rapper

In 1919, Garvey founded the Black Star Line. It was a line that generated economic opportunities for Black people from North America, the Caribbean and Africa. The Black Star Line was a symbol of pride for Black people in all ports of call. Dr. Nkrumah insisted that these principles were cardinal to the forward mobility of its people. After almost 40 years, the Ghanaian government inaugurated their fleet with the same name, in homage to Garvey, and even added a black star to the country’s new flag.

Through groundbreaking installations and collaborating with artists from The Continent and The Diaspora, Chance spent 2022 welding the worlds of art and cinematography. His new works include “Child of God” (collab with Gabonese artist and painter Naïla Opiangah), “A Bar About A Bar” (collab with Chicago-based painter Nikko Washington and filmmaker Troy Gueno), “The Highs & The Lows” feat. Joey Bada$$ (collab with Gabonese photographer Yannis Davy Guibingua), all of which celebrate Black artists. Chance’s newly released “YAH Know” features prominent Ghanaian artist King Promise.

Chance the Rapper’s highly anticipated new project, Star Line Gallery is due out later this year
