  • Remembering Sheldon Harnick, “Fiddler on the Roof” Lyricist Dies at 99

Broadway mourns Sheldon Harnick, the master Broadway lyricist behind Fiddler on the Roof. He passed away on Friday, June 23 in New York City due to natural causes at the age of 99, according to his publicist.

His death ends his long and successful career of over 60 years. The Chicago native moved to New York in 1950 and began writing for Broadway soon after. Harnick had many songs in Broadway and off-Broadway revues, but his career changed when he met composer Jerry Bock.

The duo’s first work, The Body Beautiful, was not a hit with audiences. Despite Harnick even thinking his Broadway career was over, director Hal Prince enjoyed Bock and Harnick’s musical score. Prince hired them to write music and lyrics for Fiorello! – a musical about past NYC Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia. Harnick and Bock’s work won them the Tony Award for Best Musical, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and success that led them to their greatest success: Fiddler on the Roof.

Fiddler on the Roof debuted on Broadway in 1964 and ran for six years. After closing, it was revived on Broadway in 1976. Since, a revival of Fiddler has been on Broadway once per decade since its opening. It is one of the most beloved and most produced musicals of all time, and songs like “Tradition,” “If I were a Rich Man,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” and “Sunrise, Sunset” have permanently made their way into American culture, something not all theatrical masterpieces can do.

Harnick differed himself from other lyricists by bringing genuine life to his characters. “I believe I think like a playwright, in terms of character, so that I can find different diction, different voices for the different characters,” he said in a 2014 interview with NPR. His writing stayed focused on the characters, their stories, and their motivations.

“[Harnick’s] lyrics were clear and purposeful and never lapsed into cliché,” said Tony-winning actor and writer Harvey Fierstein, who played Tyeve in Fiddler’s 2004 Broadway revival. “You’d never catch him relying on easy rhymes or ‘lists’ to fill a musical phrase. He always sought and told the truth for the character and so made acting his songs a joy…Jerry Bock’s music. Joe Stein’s book. Sheldon Harnick’s lyrics. Perfection. Nothing compares to the feelings I got singing one of their songs. I grew with each stanza; my heart was released with every thought.”

Although none of his successes could top Fiddler on the Roof, Harnick brought that same character-driven writing to each show he worked on. He never stopped working throughout his life. Recently, he collaborated on a musical adaptation of The Dragon, play by Evgeny Schwartz. Harnick is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margery Gray, their two children, and one of the most beloved musicals of all time.

  • Country On Tour continues for Luke Bryan at Darien Lake

Luke Bryan gets his Country On at Darien Lake as his 4 month long tour makes stop in Western NY. Coming off a boisterous and packed house in Syracuse, Bryan coasted into Darien Lake Theme Park with special guests Alana Springsteen (no relation to the famous New Jersey guy), Chayce Beckham, and Tyler Braden.

With over 15 million album sales under his belt, 30 #1 hits, and 20 billion streams, the native of Georgia is no stranger to success and the crowds that come with it. The packed house at this Live Nation venue in Corfu, NY was proof of that as the crowd was on their feet for his entire set, singing along to nearly every word.

Opening the night for Bryan was Alana Springsteen. Newer to the music scene, Springsteen has released a few EPs since her debut in 2019, and in July 2023 will be releasing TWENTY SOMETHING: Figuring It Out. The first single, “When We Were Friends”, was just released this week and of course she belted it out for the crowd at Darien Lake. The song is about hardships among friends which many can and will relate to.

Used to wear each other’s sneakers // Get drunk behind the bleachers // Raise some hell, but we always said amen // I knew who you were kissin’ // What tattoo you were gettin’ // Now I don’t even know how you’ve been // Truth is, I miss when // When we were friends

A little Miranda Lambert, a little Chirstina Aguilera, and a whole lot of fire, Springsteen sang her heart our for about 25 minutes, preparing the fans for who was following her.

Next up to the stage, came Chayce Beckham. Imagine being a forklift operator and deciding to enter a singing competition on national television. Imagine being told by Katy Perry that you “sound like the heart of America”. Imaging singing a song you wrote and having that be the reason you won American Idol. This was the path that led Chayce Beckham to where he is now. He no longer is a forklift operator.

Serenading young and old alike, Beckham confidently kicked some ass on this stage, getting some hand shakes and fist bumps from fans. Sultry voice, with some slicked back hair, thoughts of early Johnny Cash, and maybe some Chris Isaak are sure to enter your mind as this 27 year old belts out lyrics from his song “23”

Following Beckham, Tyler Braden strutted around on the stage for another 25 minute set. The former firefighter has been raising eyebrows for about 7 years as he makes his presence know. Go watch him on stage for one set, and you will be forever hooked. Luke Combs-esque looks and smooth vocals will make Braden a household name very soon.

Where the longnecks don’t get hot in our hands
The bar keeps doublin’ down on doubles
It ain’t hard to find a little trouble

Released in early 2023, Neon Grave is the latest EP that features the title track along with “Try Losing One”, “Middle Man,” “Wrong Right Now,” and “Choose Me,” Check out more of Tyler Facebook

I first saw Luke Bryan about 10 years ago. I don’t recall much of the night, honestly, but that story isn’t for publication. What I do recall is that Bryan got the crowd jumping, hooting and hollering immediately and never let off the gas. This night was no different in that regard.

From his first notes of “Kick The Dust Up” to his last notes of “Light it Up” Bryan had the entire seated crowd of 6400 and the extras in the lawn up and dancing around. The glow of cell phone screens filled the amphitheater and the subtle smells of vapes, pot, and spilled beer were prevalent as Luke was “Knockin Boots” on stage for close to 2 hours.

Starting around 905, the stage and house lights went dark as the crowd suddenly erupted in massive screams and cheers. We heard a little mash up of Luke Bryan songs as the curtains were pulled back and light filled the stage with light and finally Luke Bryan as he started off his set with a “Kick The Dust Up”

Along with his infamous dance moves and thought-provoking lyrics, Luke Bryan shows also boast quite a picture/light show throughout his performances. Each song is paired perfectly with proper graphics and/or light shows on large screens behind him. “Roller Coaster”, an appropriate theme for this venue, displays large coaster on the backdrop, complete with matching sounds. Other songs like “I Don’t Want This Night to End” show clips from music videos. While “Country On”, Luke’s most recent chart topper, the screen becomes an ode to service people.

With that song coming to an end, Luke called out Shannon from the pit area and brought her up on stage with him has he thanked her husband for his active duty service. Of course, this can’t be done without a surprise, right? Shannon’s husband Jeff came out from back stage and was welcomed by not only Shannon but the rambunctious crowd. Chants of USA were heard throughout the seating area. Very touching moment that brought tear to many eyes.

As Bryan continued playing until nearly 11pm, the fans kept getting louder and more active as they were dancing in all the aisles. As much as the ushers tried, these active fans were not clearing out. Ushers near me eventually gave in and began dancing along to the music.

Having been signed to music labels since 2017, Luke spent time prior to that writing songs for the likes of Travis Tritt and Billy Currington. With this experience, Bryan has nearly 40 musical awards, 10 headliner tours, and has played countless festivals and spring break events. Its no wonder why he has become one of the most famous acts in country music history. Keep up Luke as he continues his current tour and his subsequent ones. Farm Tour 2023 (lukebryan.com)

Setlist: Kick the Dust Up, What Makes You Country, Knockin’ Boots, Roller Coaster, But I Got a Beer in My Hand, Strip it Down, Rain is a Good Thing, Games, Country On, One Margarita, Sunrise/Sunburn/Sunset, Huntin’/Fishin’ and Lovin’ Every Day, I Don’t Want This Night to End, Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye, Buy Dirt (Jordain Davis), Play it Again, What She Wants Tonight, Down to One, I See You, Light It Up, Country Girl (Shake it For Me), That’s My Kind of Night

  • Goose Release “Live at Radio City Music Hall”

Goose has recently announced the release of a landmark concert recording commemorating the band’s two-night performance in June of 2022 at the New York City venue. Live at Radio City Music Hall is now available digitally while a limited edition, vinyl box set is up for pre-order.

Although Goose is no stranger to sold-out shows and incredible success, their performances on June 24th and 25th of last year proved to be a major turning point in their career. The two sold out shows not only allowed them to properly showcase their critically acclaimed breakthrough LP, Dripfield, but brought striking sit-ins from special guests Trey Anastasio and Father John Misty.

Live at Radio City Music Hall includes the complete setlist from both nights which feature acoustic renditions of Goose fan favorites like “Elmeg the Wise,” covers of Bruce Springsteen, Arcade Fire, and more, as well as a weekend-closing version of The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows” featuring Anastasio on guitar and Misty on drums.

Goose’s vocalist and guitar player Rick Mitarotonda raves about the band-altering experience saying, “Playing Radio City Music Hall felt like a unifying moment for the band. I was anticipating being nervous considering all of the history and prestige of that room, but it surprisingly ended up feeling really comfortable. I think that speaks to the magic of that venue, and moment for the band. It felt like both reaching a destination and opening a door to a new beginning at the same time.”

Following this stunning release, Goose will be headlining multiple dates this summer on their 2023 tour beginning in June and lasting until November. Their forty date trek includes a sold-out, two-night run at Louisville, KY’s Louisville Palace Theatre; a sold-out, two-night Independence Day celebration at Asbury Park, NJ’s Stone Pony Summer Stage; and visits to famed venues like Saratoga Springs, NY’s Saratoga Performing Arts Center; Detroit, MI’s Masonic Temple Theatre; Santa Barbara, CA’s Santa Barbara Bowl; and Las Vegas, NV’s Brooklyn Bowl.

Thankfully for the “Ganders,” Goose’s hardcore fans, the band will not stop there. They will also continue to be among the headline acts at an array of upcoming festivals and events, including Rothbury, MI’s Electric Forest; Scranton, PA’s Peach Music Festival; and headlining for two nights with four unique sets in Garrettsville, OH at the Resonance Music and Arts Festival.

With summer right around the corner, locations all over New York are preparing to hold lively outdoor music entertainment for the public. Schenectady is no different as the city’s concert series “Jazz on Jay” is back for the summer of 2023 and is already well under way.

Jazz on Jay began on June 1st and performances are held every Thursday from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM on the cobblestone stretch of Schenectady’s beautiful Jay Street Arcade.

The concert series is completely free to the public and works to support the region’s talent as every performance will be carried out by working artists and educators. This year’s line up includes several special visits, including the swing of the well-established, fiddle and vocal-driven Teresa Broadwell Band; the Slam Stewart-inspired musings of the Tarik Shah Trio; the North Country Django Reinhardt fire of the 2022 Eddie Award-winning Hot Club of Saratoga; and the creative jazz of the Michael Bisio Quartet.

In addition to the soothing sounds of jazz, this year’s Jazz on Jay will introduce a new component in which local artists Heather Hutchison and Oscar Bogran will create artwork based on the music they hear being played during a specific performance. Hutchinson will be present for Mike Purcell & Company’s performance on June 22nd while Bogran will create his art on both August 10th and August 31st.

The band is no stranger to the title of headliner as earlier this year, Quarters of Change wrapped their first-ever US headline run, The Deluxe Tour. • Summer Camp Music Festival to go on Hiatus after 22nd year

The Summer Camp Music Festival, an annual staple for Chillicothe, Illinois, is to be discontinued following this years gathering on Memorial Day weekend. Producer of the festival, Ian Goldberg, shared the news in a recent press release.

The Summer Camp Music Festival first began in 2001 and has since been known for its trademark late night events, open field shows, campgrounds, and a consistent line up of incredible artists and bands. The 2023 Memorial Day weekend will mark its 22nd year running, bringing back host bands moe. and Umphrey’s McGee along with headliners Willie Nelson & Family, Badflower, and more.

In his statement, Goldberg related that the show will not come to a definite end as the team still plans to throw a redefined camping and music experience at the Three Sisters Park every Memorial Day starting in 2024. The need for change is said to come from logistical challenges that emerged from the pandemic along with the difficulties of throwing an independent festival of this size against large corporate competition. Goldberg claims that these problems have had the team reevaluating how the festival runs for a while now which has led to more road blocks.

“Reimagining Summer Camp had its own challenges, we could not figure how to scale back the event in a way that would feel true to everything Summer Camp Music Festival has come to be,” Goldberg stated. “Cutting pieces of it felt like leaving our children behind. So we decided it was time to put the Summer Camp Music Festival to rest. For now.”

More details about the new Summer Camp festival are said to be released to the public after this year’s concerts. While being different from what concert goers have grown to love, the producer emphasizes that the new rendition will include certain aspects of the original that experienced Sumer Campers will find very familiar.

This year’s Summer Camp Music Festival will commence on May 26th, and, as Goldberg claims, will be “insanely meaningful.”

  • Danielle Ponder Releases New Spiritual Single “Roll the Credits”

Rising soul and R&B artist, Danielle Ponder, released her new song “Roll the Credits” on May 5th. Her single is accompanied by a cinematic music video directed by Broadway choreographer and dancer Hettie Barnhill. Originally from Rochester, the singer has left her mark on New York’s music scene for more than a decade.

“Roll the Credits” takes listeners into a passionate and pulsating world of spirituality. Filmed in the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico, the video allows listeners to connect the spiritual relationship that Ponder speaks of in her dynamic lyrics with culture, dance, music, and nature. Throughout the verses, the artist shows off her range and confidence in her weighty, graveling vocal style along with her clarity and evocation in her alternative gospel-like chorus.

After playing the song in various live shows, it has clearly become a crowd and fan favorite throughout North America as well as Europe. The video itself has reached over 16,000 views in the past two weeks and continues to rise.

Ponder’s new single is produced by Grammy nominated musician Gianluca Buccellati who has worked with artists ranging from Lana Del Ray to Paris Texas. The pair collaborated on Ponder’s debut album Some of Us Are Brave which was released last year.

When speaking about her biggest influences Ponder comments, “We couldn’t listen to secular music so, I was listening to a lot of gospel early on, like Shirley Caesar, John P. Kee, the Blind Boys of Alabama — a mix of old and new school stuff. However, the blues is where I really developed a desire to sing. Listening to Big Mama Thornton and Koko Taylor, I wanted to know how to do that.

After taking the risk of leaving her career as a public defender behind in 2018, the artist has followed a path of expression and music all the way to the lime-light. She has unveiled her voice and passion with the world, landing her television appearances on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

In order to celebrate and share her new music, Ponder has set out on a twenty-four date tour. Her live show will be performed in select cities throughout North America and Europe.

  • Rising Jazz Star Isaiah J. Thompson wins 2023 American Pianists Awards

Isaiah J. Thompson is making waves in the jazz scene with his unique sound and virtuosic playing. Thompson recently won the prestigious 2023 American Pianist Awards and his album The Power of the Spirit is out now.

The top contender of five finalists, Thompson took home the accolades of the award and prizes valued at $200,000. He showed a deep respect for the jazz tradition and a forward-thinking approach to improvisation. Thus, Thompson established himself as one of the most exciting young musicians of his generation.

NPR hailed Thompson as “a young musician and composer with a mature touch and rare combination of talent, creativity, humility and honesty.” He also previously performed with jazz such as including Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Steve Turre, John Pizzarelli, and Buster Williams.

Additionally, Wynton Marsalis, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Managing and Artistic Director said, “I first encountered Isaiah when he was a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra nearly a decade ago. Since then, I’ve had the privilege to watch his artistry develop, both at the Juilliard School and on the stages of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Isaiah is a versatile, soulful musician with such a singular voice and strong intention in his playing that I know he is destined to do great things.”

Thompson’s new album, The Power of the Spirit was recorded live in front of a rapturous audience at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club. The Power of the Spirit finds Thompson’s seasoned quartet delivering a locked-in performance of their repertoire. On full display are the pianist’s stunning dexterity and soulful original material. Combining crisp technicality with a gospel-inflected sound, Thompson nods to forebears like Bobby Timmons, Phineas Newborn Jr., and Cedar Walton.

Thompson already released two singles from the album to critical acclaim. The first single “The IT Department” is both a play on Thompson’s initials and a tribute to his father. About the song, Thompson stated, “I don’t come from a particularly musical family, but they have always supported me.” The song landed Thompson on the cover of Tidal’s “Rising Jazz” playlist. The second single from album was “Tales of the Elephant and the Butterfly.”

Other performance’s by Thompson can by found in his NPR Tiny Desk concert, his Jazz Night in America Youngblood series episode, and his special guest appearance on the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s Handful of Keys. With the release of The Power of the Spirit, Isaiah showcases his undeniable talent and passion for jazz.
